    We all appreciate the relief from discomfon afforded by a modern air-conditioningsysrem. Infact. many products of today could not be produced at all were the temperarure.humidity, and air quality not conrolled within very niurow limits. The development andindustrialization of the United States. especially the Southern states. would never havebeen possible without year-round control of the indoor environment. One has only tolook ior a manutacruring or printing plant. electronics laborarory. or other high-technology facility and the vast office comple.res associated with our economy tounderstand the truth of that statement. hdegd. vl-nuallv eve l.indusrriul. und instirutional building in the United States. Canada. and o(her industrialcountries of the world have controlled environments rhe vear round.

Escalating energy costs sincethat decede have caused increased interest in efficiency of operation.   • 2 Chapter I Introduction1.1 HISTORICAL NOTES

    Historically air conditiomng has implied cooling or otherwise improving the indc:orenvironment during the w:um months of the year. In modern times the term has takerr ona more literal merning that can be applied to year-round environmental siruations. Thatis, air conditioning refers to the control of temperarure. moisture content, cleanliness. airqualir_v, and air circulation as required by occupants. a process, or a product in the space.This definition was first proposed by Willis Carrier (l).

    There is evidence of the use of evaporative effects and ice for cooling in very earlytimes: however, it was not unril the middle of the nineteenth cenrury that a practicalrefrigerating machine was built. By the end of the nineteenth century, the con(i':;central heating was fiirly well developed. and early in the rwentieth century cooling for

    ' comfort got is start. Carrier is credited with the first successful attempt in 1902 tr,reduce the humidiry of air and maintain it at a specified level ( I ). This marked the trirthof true environmental control as we know it today. Developments since tiat time havebeen rapid.

    More detailed discussions of the history of heating, refrigeration, and air conditioningare given in articles by Willis R. Woolrich, John W. James, Walter A. Grant, andWilliam L. McGrath (2). Because of the wide scope and diverse nanrre of the Heating,Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) field, litenlly thousands of engineers. theirnames too numerous to list, have developed the industry. The accomplishments of aiithese unnamed persons are summarized in the ASHP,I.E* Handbook consisting of for;r'volumes entitled: Fundamentals, Refrigeration, HVAC Systems and Equipmenr, aueiHVAC Applications. Research designed to improve the handbooks is sponsored byASHRAE and monitored by ASHRAE members. The principles presented in thistextbook follow the handbooks closely.

    At the beginning we will review the units and dimensions common to HVAC analysisand design.

    UNITS AND DI]VIENSIONSIn HVAC computations as in all engineering work, consistent units must be employed.A anir is a specific quantitative measure of a physical characteristic in reference to astandard. Examples of a unit are the foot and the meter, which are used to measure thephysical characteristic length. A physical characteristic. such as length. is called adimension. Other dimensions of interest in HVAC computations are force. time,temperarure. and mass.

    In this text two svstems of units will be employed. The first is called the EnglislrEngineering System and is most commonly used in HVAC work in the United Stateswith some modification such as use of inches instead of feet. The system is sometimesrefened to as the inch-pound or IP system. The second isrhe International Sysrem (or SIfor Systeme International d'Unires), the system in use in engineering practice throush-out most of the world and widely adopted in the United Sta(es.

    Equipment designed using U. S. conventional units will be opera(ional foryears andeven decades. For the foreseeable future. then, it will be necessary for many engineers

    The SI system is described in several documenrs: (3), (4), and (5). The sysremconsists of seven base units (the tbur base units given in Table l-l plus units of electriccurrenl amount of substance. and luminous intensity). In addition there are twosupplementary units for the plane anele (rad), the solid anele (r), and a list of derivedunits. The derived units in the SI system that are flrequentl.v.. .rsed in HVAC are given inTable l-2.

    Because there is only one unit lor each dimension in the SI system. there is a carefullydefined set of multiple and submultiple prefixes ro avoid the use of, a large number of
