The International Security Management Knowledge Alliance (ISM-KA) is an EU, Erasmus Plus funded project aiming to create sustainable and concrete educational resources and information structures to foster international security collaborations.

Deliverables of ISM-KA will be: a Horizon Scanning Tool for security threats/development; an exchange/knowledge platform for public and private security experts (Security Multilogue Platform); a multi-disciplinary sectoral based accredited Master Programme and a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) for outreach to the wider public. The guiding principles of the ISM-KA project are multi-stakeholder involvement, evidence-based management, co-creation, international perspective and policy-practice alignment.

Master Programme The ISM-KA is developing a multi-disciplinary sectoral based accredited MSc programme to educate and train the current and next generation of decision makers in the international arena of safety and security. Through case-based teaching and learning, students will be given the opportunity to understand security from a real-world holistic point of view. As a result, they will be better equipped to implement adequate security management in their own organizations. Sustainability

ISM-KA aims at providing platforms, tools and methods to address European security challenges in a holistic and knowledge-driven manner. The Horizon Scanning Tool will be developed to map international security challenges in an ongoing process and to assure the long-term sustainability of the ISM-KA. The Security Multilogue Platform has been created around the Programme in order to reach out to a wider audience, including students, researchers, media representatives and the broader public. A MOOC will be developed as learning tools within the Master Programme and will contribute to the education of a broader audience. In addition to the educational opportunities provided by the ISM Master and Open Learning environments through concrete experiences and real-world cases, our Knowledge Alliance also offers a knowledge platform for exchanges between security stakeholders regardless of their sector or country.

Horizon Scanning Tool

The Horizon Scanning Tool for security threats/development has been developed to map international security challenges in an ongoing process and to assure the long-term sustainability of the ISM-KA. The Horizon Scanning function of this project enables Security Actors to continuously update their knowledge of developments in terms of emerging threats, upcoming trends in the security market, and technologies. The Horizon Scanning mechanism and feedback loop cover both practical applications (e.g. policy changes affecting safety and security) as well as wider societal issues (e.g. immigration crisis, illicit trades or radicalisation). Furthermore, its outputs will be dynamically incorporated into the ISM course modules as well integrated back into the Security Multilogue Platform. The scope is to: identify and categorise the list of security issues based on a commonly agreed taxonomy; create a pillar to share information; create understanding across the diversity of involved communities and pave the way to a value-based prioritisation of the research topics.

Security Multilogue Platform

The Security Multilogue Platform (SMP) is an exchange/knowledge platform for public and private security experts. It has been shaped around the Master Programme and is aimed at facilitating continuing contact and engagement with and between the target audience and a wider range of safety and security related stakeholders. Together with the MOOC, the SMP functions as core dissemination and marketing tools, supported by the Horizon Scanning Tool which will guarantee up-to-date relevance even after the lifetime of the project.

MOOC

The ISM MOOC is a learning tool developed within the ISM-KA project in line with the development of the Master and will contribute to the education of a broader audience. It will serve as a platform for baseline cultural shift for training and education in safety and security for an outreach to the wider public. A case-based teaching and a problem-based learning approach will be adopted, where students can develop skills such as analytic thinking and critical reflection in responding to scenarios and problems based on real-life case studies. Both organisations and individuals not able or willing to commit to a full Master Programme will be able to benefits from participating in the ISM MOOC.
