TRANSPORT CANADA CERTIFIES 90-SEAT CABIN CONFIGURATION FOR BOMBARDIER’S Q400 AIRCRAFT

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced that its 90-passenger

Q400 aircraft configuration has received its certification from Transport Canada, becoming the first in-production commercial turboprop in the world to reach that capacity.

“With increasing growth in the number of passengers per departure in the turboprop market, we are excited to offer our customers a higher-capacity configuration and 15 percent lower cost per seat compared to the previous standard Q400, leading to more profitability potential for airlines,” said Todd Young, Head of the Q Series Aircraft Program, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “This milestone certification showcases -- once again -- the unique versatility of the Q400 turboprop and our continued commitment to the evolution of the program.

“Upon delivery later this year, our launch customer SpiceJet will become the first airline to take advantage of the profitable and efficient operations of the 90-seat Q400 aircraft following its order of up to 50 in 2017,” added Mr. Young.

Combined with the Q400 aircraft’s unique speed flexibility, which is driving higher scheduling efficiency, this new segment solution is perfectly adapted to high-demand turboprop markets and will further enhance economic connectivity between smaller towns and major hubs.

The 90-seat configuration represents another step in Bombardier’s continuous improvement of its Q400 aircraft, aimed at addressing traffic growth and customer bottom line. Other improvements under

development includes a 2,000-lb-increase in payload capacity and an escalation of the A-Check and C-Check intervals from 600/6,000 to 800/8,000 flight hours.

AIR DECCAN CONNECTS NASHIK WITH MUMBAI AND PUNE

A ir Deccan, which restarted its operations in Maharashtra from July this year, is

now taking a leap forward to connect Nashik with Ahmedabad. The airline service provider under ‘UDAAN’ scheme (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik), restarted its journey in the state of Maharashtra connecting flights between cities of Pune, Nashik, Mumbai, Jalgaon and Kohlapur.

Shaishav Shah, managing director of Air Deccan & executive director of GSEC said, “We are in constant endeavor to overcome all the issues pertaining to delays caused in the past in the Maharashtra sector and we understand every new beginning will have the situations against it, for instance, yesterday itself we had to cancel a flight on Jalgaon route due to lack of visibility, which was majorly due to infrastructural issues. Such delay/cancellations do happen in fully equipped airports like Mumbai and Delhi, but smaller airports are still way- under process hence it is the responsibility of the airline to maintain safety measures. We feel what matters most is Air Deccan is determined and ready to put our best foot forward to overcome all the limitation and make UDAN a success story. We are happy that the relaunch of our routes in Maharashtra connecting Mumbai with Pune, Nashik, Jalgaon & Kolhapur are running smoothly and now connecting Nashik with Ahmedabad will be a major milestone that shall embark connecting two major business

hubs soon under AIR DECCAN.”

“We shall be inducting more aircraft to cater the sectors and at the same time we have to make sure that current active sectors remain sustainable in long run. Despite having a mixed response so far in operating flights under the RCS scheme, we are very optimistic to adapt and evolve the concept of economical air travel amongst the user, which we as well understand will be a gradual process and it will not be fair to assume patterns and preferences change overnight,” he added.

UDAN is to let the common citizens of the country fly by making the air travel affordable and widespread. Air Deccan, which resumed air operations after a gap of almost ten years in 2017, had won the rights to operate Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) flights in the first round of bidding in March the same year. It was awarded 128 routes across the country, with nine routes based out of Mumbai connecting various key cities in Maharashtra to Mumbai. In this context commencement of regional connectivity scheme in towns of Maharashtra will continue to demonstrate Air Deccan’s growth.

Speaking about the future plan, Shah commented Air Deccan will be operating at Delhi, Kolkata and is also in the process of operating at Gujarat.

MEMBERS OF INDIA’S FIRST SPACE CREW MAY BE TRAINED IN RUSSIA

The members of the first Indian space crew may undergo training in a foreign

state, Russia being one of the options, Kailasavadivoo Sivan, head of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), told journalists.

ISRO will need to take the help of a foreign country for advanced training of the crew, he said. “We have not decided which country we will choose for training. Russia, Germany and USA have the facilities,” Sivan said, according to the PTI news agency.

He added that there are consultations with the Indian Air Force on the crew selection. After the crew is selected, two to

three years will be needed to train it, the ISRO head noted.

Sivan reported earlier that the organization is discussing issues linked to the first Indian space flight with Rakesh Sharma, the first and only Indian citizen to travel in space. He flew aboard Soyuz T-11 in 1984.

In his speech on Independence Day on August 15, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the country will independently send an Indian crew to space by 2022, when India will be celebrating its 75th independence anniversary. ISRO’s representatives said then that a crew of three people is expected to be sent to a near-earth orbit where it will work for five to seven days. The name of the spacecraft and the whole program was already announced - it is Gaganyaan (Sanskrit for “sky craft”). According to local media, India’s crew may include both men and women.

BOEING FORECASTS GREATEST DEMAND FOR PILOTS, TECHNICIANS, CABIN CREW IN ASIA PACIFIC REGION

Boeing reports that the Asia Pacific region will have the greatest global

demand for new civil aviation personnel over the next 20 years. The region is projected to account for 33 percent of the global need for pilots, 34 percent for technicians and 36 percent for cabin crew.

The 2018 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook is an industry forecast of new aviation personnel demand. It is closely tied to projections for new airplane deliveries around the globe. As with personnel demand, the Asia Pacific region leads demand for new

commercial airplane deliveries over the next 20 years. Forty percent of all new passenger airplane deliveries in the next 20 years will be delivered to airlines in the Asia Pacific region.

According to the outlook:

• The 20-year demand for new commercial sector pilots in the region remains strong at 240,000. While demand decreased five percent, this was driven by regional trends that indicate a peak in pilot retirements in the first decade of the forecast and a softening of replacement demand in the later years, due to a younger generation entering the pilot ranks long before reaching mandatory retirement age.

• New commercial technician demand decreased five percent to 242,000. This is due to advancements in product development on the 737 MAX, which have resulted in increased maintenance efficiencies. Overall, maintenance hours required over the life of the airplane will be reduced.

• New commercial cabin crew demand increased three percent to 317,000 due to anticipated fleet mix, cabin configuration and regulatory requirements.

For the first time, the outlook included the helicopter and business aviation markets. The inclusion of these sectors increases the region’s demand to 261,000 pilots, 257,000 technicians and 321,000 cabin crew.

Leading the region in projected demand for new pilots, technicians and cabin crew:

• China: 128,500 pilots; 126,750 technicians; 147,250 cabin crew

• Southeast Asia: 48,500 pilots; 54,000 technicians; 76,250 cabin crew

• South Asia: 42,750 pilots; 35,000 technicians; 43,250 cabin crew

“Strong demand for pilots in the region continues, and we expect that this will continue for the next several years,” said Keith Cooper, vice president of Training & Professional Services for Boeing Global Services. “Through our pilot training solutions, including the Pilot Development Program, we are helping to ensure a pipeline of pilots is ready to meet the industry’s demand.”

SPICEJET OPERATES INDIA’S FIRST ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY BIOJET FUEL FLIGHT

Low-cost carrier SpiceJet operated India’s first test flight powered partially

by biojet fuel from Dehradun to New Delhi, with 75 per cent being the regular aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and 25 per cent being the biojet fuel made from the Jatropha plant. The airline said the use of the cheaper environment-friendly biojet fuel across the world would reduce carbon emissions by upto 15 per cent and would also result in reduction of air-fares.

The airline operated a Bombardier Q400 aircraft for the flight which landed in the capital even as several impressed Union ministers looked on.

to meet the rising demand for domestic and international air travel in emerging cities. The new services will also help connect guests with other cities including metros as well as the airline’s global network via its hubs in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru.

In a series of industry-firsts, Jet Airways will introduce daily flights from Indore, connecting the ‘largest city in Madhya Pradesh’ to Jodhpur as well as to Vadodara. In other notable firsts, Jet Airways is also set to commence flight operations between Chandigarh and Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Jodhpur as well as Vadodara and Jaipur. Jet Airways will be the only airline in the country operating these routes which will improve connectivity between north India and central as well as western India.

The airline is also introducing additional frequencies on key existing routes, expanding non-stop capacity between Mumbai – Guwahati and Delhi – Bagdogra and providing additional one-stop connectivity on the Mumbai – Bagdogra and New Delhi – Guwahati routes.

Among other network enhancements, the schedule will see Jet Airways launch non-stop flights connecting Bengaluru with Lucknow, Indore with Kolkata, Kolkata with Chandigarh, Coimbatore with Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam with Mumbai and Delhi, reflecting the growing demand for its services to facilitate the travel aspirations of its guests.

The airline’s focus on Indore is evident, given that the city is fast shaping up as a key pillar in its pan-India network due to its central location and expanding infrastructure. Jet Airways is all set to deepen it’s connect with Indore by offering services to 14 cities across the country. In fact, the airline will be the only one providing non-stop connectivity from Indore to emerging markets and mini metros such as Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Vadodara, Jodhpur, Allahabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Nagpur and Pune. Jet Airways will also provide non-stop connectivity from Indore to metros such as Kolkata and Hyderabad as well as its hubs in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru channelising network traffic seamlessly to its international network. The airline’s latest service to Kolkata will finally link it to the main commercial and financial hub of East.

The airline’s new services such as Indore -

Vadodara and Indore – Jodhpur will promote travel and stimulate business and economic activity in each of the cities, especially for the Small and Medium Enterprises located in and around Vadodara as well as Jodhpur. The new and existing flights will also enable Jet Airways’ guests to avail the airline’s day-return services from Indore to Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Nagpur. Further, guests from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata will now have additional connectivity to Jodhpur, Allahabad, Vadodara and vice versa via Indore.

Mr. Raj Sivakumar, Sr. Vice-President, Worldwide Sales & Distribution, Jet Airways, said, “As air travel gains prominence in emerging cities across India such as Indore, Jodhpur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam and Vadodara, there is an increasing need to introduce connectivity solution for these cities. Our schedule has been meticulously planned to meet the expected surge in demand over the coming months. New flights, additional frequencies, greater capacity across more sectors are meant to offer our discerning guests additional choice, convenience, connectivity and superior comfort. This will also benefit Small and Medium Enterprises as well as corporate travellers who will be able to enjoy day-return flights. I am sure our new flights will reinforce Jet Airways’ as the preferred airline and will boost connectivity, trade and development in each of these cities.”

With this one time provision, SpiceJet has now fully provided for the maximum amount that may be payable under the arbitration award.

In addition to the above exceptional item, SpiceJet accounted for INR 51 Crore as forex losses (that includes the provision of INR 25.2 Crore of aforesaid forex revaluation) due to the depreciation of the Indian Rupee.

Income was INR 2,270.8 Crore for the reported quarter as against INR 1,886.3 Crore in the same quarter last year. For the same comparative period, expenses were INR 2,245.4 Crore as against INR 1,711 Crore; EBITDA before exceptional items were INR 118.7 Crore as against INR 248.4 Crore; EBITDAR before exceptional items were INR 398.4 Crore as against INR 479.4 Crore.

The Company additionally paid an amount of INR 203 Crores on account of increase in cost of Aviation Turbine Fuel and an amount of INR 44 Crores on account of forex losses as compared to Q1 2017. A superior revenue performance ensured that an amount of INR 99 Crores of these losses was offset by an increase in revenue.

In percentage terms, income per ASKM grew by 6% as compared to same quarter last year due to increase in passenger load factor, and an increase in average fares and ancillary revenues; operating expenses per ASKM increased by 15% on account of 34% increase in ATF and 4% increase in exchange rate.

While the industry has been plagued with adverse macroeconomic conditions in the form of rising crude oil prices and weakening rupee, SpiceJet was able to demonstrate a superior revenue performance to overcome this drag and has been able to generate positive cash flow.

Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet, said, “SpiceJet has delivered yet another operational profitable quarter despite surging oil prices and a weak rupee. As we start inducting the new fuel-efficient B737 MAX and the Bombardier Q400, we will be able to significantly reduce our overall costs even as we aggressively expand our network both in India and overseas. We are confident that our operating model is

robust to deal with this current unfavorable macro-economic headwinds”

In terms of operational parameters, SpiceJet had the best passenger load factor amongst all airlines in the country during the quarter. The average domestic load factor for the quarter was 94.53%. For 39 months in a row, SpiceJet has flown with the highest load factors in the Indian aviation market and for 38 months in a row the loads have been in excess of 90%, a feat unparalleled globally.

During the quarter, SpiceJet launched Spice Star Academy a first of its kind initiative by any airline where students will be offered a Bachelor of Business Administration degree recognized by UGC from Amity University along with a placement opportunity at SpiceJet. The state-of-the-art academy will nurture aspiring young men and women who wish to join the aviation industry through best-in-class training programs.

Key business updates

SpiceJet is poised to induct 15 aircraft till December 2018. These include 11 737 MAX and 4 Bombardier Q400s. As indicated, the 737 MAX shall reduce costs by 8 - 9% as compared to the previous generation and the new generation Q400s with additional seating capacity is expected to improve the overall operating economics of this aircraft by 15 – 18%. This will also enhance capacities in the regional and UDAN routes.

been operating the Moscow-Delhi route without a break.

As demand for air travel between the two countries grew so did flight frequencies. At the end of 1950s Aeroflot offered only one weekly flight to India. Today, the Russian flag carrier operates two daily flights between Moscow and Delhi using modern and comfortable Airbus A330 aircraft.

The airline in a press release informed that in Spring 2016, passenger traffic increased sharply following the launch of the second daily flight. 2017 was a record-setting year for the Moscow-Delhi route: Aeroflot carried almost 290 thousand passengers, a 50 percent year-on-year increase.

The Moscow-Delhi route is strategically important for Aeroflot as it aims to further grow transit traffic between Europe and Asia. Passengers choose the airline to travel from Delhi to destinations in Russia and Europe.

ETHIOPIAN COMMITS TO RELAUNCH OF ZAMBIA AIRWAYS WITH $30M DEAL

A frica‘s largest airline (by revenue and fleet size) Ethiopian Airlines has signed

an agreement on August 20, 2018, with the government of Zambia for the re-launch of the Southern African country‘s flag carrier at an initial investment of $30 million.

Under the new shareholding agreement, Ethiopian Airlines will own quite a sizeable stake at the re-newed Zambia Airways: having 45% the Zambian government will have 55%, while Ethiopian will have the remaining

“The initial investment as we start up the national carrier will be $30 million. Obviously, as we operate the airline, we will facilitate the financing necessary to support its growth,” Reuters quotes a joint statement from Ethiopian Airlines and Zambia‘s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

Zambia Airways is to be relaunched in October, 2018. The carrier would begin flying on local and regional routes, eventually adding flights to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It hopes to operate 12 aircraft by 2028,

A21 reports.

Will the revamped Zambian airline be a success?

In 2013, Ethiopian signed a similar contract with Malawi Airlines, which it currently operates. But the Zambian project is not a new one for the country – the airline is being revived two decades later since it ceased operations.

The state-owned Zambia Airways was founded in the 70s from what remained of the central African Airways Corporation. It went bankrupt and was liquidated in 1994. Meanwhile, the privately-owned airline by the name of Zambian Airways was founded in the 50s until ceasing operations in 2009 .

Ethiopian is also in talks with the governments of Chad , Djibouti , Equatorial Guinea and Guinea to strike similar deals like the one with the Zambian government.

AIRBUS PERLAN MISSION II SOARS TO OVER 62,000 FEET, SETTING SECOND ALTITUDE WORLD RECORD AND CROSSING ARMSTRONG LINE

A irbus Perlan Mission II, the world’s first initiative to pilot an engineless aircraft

to the edge of space, made history again yesterday in El Calafate, Argentina, by soaring in the stratosphere to a pressure altitude of over 62,000 feet (60,669 feet GPS altitude). This set a new gliding altitude world record, pending official validation.

The pressurized Perlan 2 glider, which is designed to soar up to 90,000 feet, passed the Armstrong Line, the point in the atmosphere above which an unprotected human’s blood will boil if an aircraft loses pressurization.

This marks a second glider altitude

world record for Jim Payne and Morgan Sandercock, the same two Perlan Project pilots who soared the Perlan 2 to 52,221 feet GPS altitude on Sept. 3, 2017, in the same remote region of Argentine Patagonia. The 2017 record broke a previous record that was set in 2006, in the unpressurized Perlan 1, by Perlan Project founder Einar Enevoldson and Steve Fossett.

“This is a tremendous moment for all the volunteers and sponsors of Airbus Perlan Mission II who have been so dedicated to making our nonprofit aerospace initiative a reality,” said Ed Warnock, CEA of The Perlan Project. “Our victory today, and whatever other milestones we achieve this year, are a testament to a pioneering spirit of exploration that runs through everyone on the project and through the organizations that support us.”

“Innovation is a buzzword in aerospace today, but Perlan truly embodies the kind of bold thinking and creativity that are core Airbus values,” said Tom Enders, Airbus CEO. “Perlan Project is achieving the seemingly impossible, and our support for this endeavor sends a message to our employees, suppliers and competitors that we will not settle for being anything less than extraordinary.”

Another first-of-its kind achievement this year for the Perlan Project was the use of a special high-altitude tow plane rather than a conventional glider tow plane. During yesterday’s flight, Perlan 2 was towed to the base of the stratosphere by a Grob Egrett G520 turboprop, a high-altitude reconnaissance plane that was modified for the task earlier this summer. Operated by AV Experts, LLC, and flown by chief pilot Arne Vasenden, the Egrett released Perlan 2 at around 42,000 feet, the approximate service ceiling of an Airbus A380.

To soar into the highest areas of Earth’s atmosphere, Perlan 2 pilots catch a ride on stratospheric mountain waves, a weather phenomenon created when rising air currents behind mountain ranges are significantly strengthened by the polar vortex. The phenomenon occurs only for a brief period each year in just a few places on earth. Nestled within the Andes Mountains in Argentina, the area around El Calafate is one of those rare locations where these rising air currents can reach to 100,000 feet or more.

Built in Oregon and home-based

in Minden, Nevada, the Perlan 2 glider incorporates a number of unique innovations to enable its ambitious mission:

A carbon-fiber capsule with a unique high-efficiency, passive cabin pressurization system that eliminates the need for heavy, power-hungry compressors.

A unique closed-loop rebreather system, in which the only oxygen used is what the crew metabolizes. It is the lightest and most efficient system for a sealed cabin, and its design has applications for other high-altitude aircraft.

An onboard “wave visualization system” that graphically displays areas of rising and sinking air in cockpits. For commercial flights, following lines of rising air would allow faster climbs and save fuel, while also helping aircraft avoid dangerous phenomena such as wind shear and severe downdrafts.

Unlike powered research aircraft, Perlan 2 does not affect the temperature or chemistry of the air around it, making it an ideal platform to study the atmosphere. The experiments carried aloft in its instrument bay are yielding new discoveries related to high-altitude flight, weather and climate change.

This season, Perlan 2 is flying with experiments developed by The Perlan Project’s science and research committee, as well as projects created in collaboration with organizations and schools in the U.S. and Argentina. Perlan 2 research projects currently include:

- An experiment measuring radiation effects at high altitudes, designed by students from Cazenovia Central School & Ashford School in Connecticut. This project is in coordination with Teachers in Space, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization that stimulates student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics;

- A flight data recorder, developed by Argentina’s Instituto de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas para la Defensa (CITEDEF);

- A second flight data recorder, designed by students at Argentina’s La Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (UTN);

- A space weather (radiation) instrument;

- An experiment titled “Marshmallows in Space,” developed by the Oregon

Bryan Thompson Appointed CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports

Benjamin Smith, currently second in command at Air Canada, was officially

named CEO of Air France-KLM group by the board of directors on August 16, 2018. He will take office by September 30, 2018, despite protest from the company’s unions.

Nine unions within Air France voiced their concern before the board meeting in a statement, considering that it was “inconceivable that the company Air France, French since 1933, falls into the hands of a foreign leader whose application would be pushed by a competing industrial group,” referring to

Delta Air Lines, said a shareholder with a stake of 8.8% in Air France-KLM. The unions estimate that the new CEO might “not defend the national company’s interests” and “lack knowledge […] of the specificities of the French social model.” His salary also sparked outrage. French media Liberation reported that Smith would receive about €3 million per year, three times what his predecessor Jean-Marc Janaillac was paid.

As soon as his name was disclosed on August 8, 2018, Smith’s candidature was criticized by the Syndicat National des Pilotes de Ligne (SNPL), the main pilot

union at Air France. In a tweet, Philippe Evain, the SNPL president, declared that this nomination would “keep in place the people that already failed.”

The research was extended to international profiles after the publication of the airline’s financial results in July 2018. The change was pushed by Delta Air Lines, but also by China Eastern, which are among Air France-KLM shareholders. The decision is reportedly backed by the Dutch side of the company.

Air France unions have been asking for a 6% wage increase following a profitable year in 2017. Since the beginning of the year, strikes costed the company more than €300 million. Smith will have to succeed Jean-Marc Janaillac, the former CEO that resigned following the refusal of a draft wage agreement by the unions.

DigiYatraDigiYatra is an industry and Government led initiative co-ordinated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation with the vision to transform the Indian aviation sector by digitally enabling the passenger. It will significantly alter the flying experience for passengers and position Indian aviation amongst the most innovative air networks in the world.

The DigiYatra platform is built on four pillars: connected passengers, connected airports, connected flying and connected systems. It is being introduced to provide passengers with a digitally unified flying experience across all stages of their journey, whilst helping to alleviate the capacity crisis in Indian airports both today and in the future and relieve queues and congestion for passengers.

India’s thirst for internal travelThe latest data from IATA has shown that domestic demand for air travel in India is the highest amongst major aviation markets with Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPK), a figure which measures actual passenger traffic, rising by 17.9% in January 2018since January 2017. The Airports Council International (ACI) predicts that India will represent the third largest aviation market in terms of passenger throughput after the US and China by 2020.

Key statistics include:o Domestic passengers grew by 27.2% to

13.5 million with over 115,000 domestic flights during the 2017/18 financial year (to February)(1)

o Domestic air passenger traffic is in continual growth and all key scheduled carriers flew their planes with over 80% of the seats full(2)

o Figures show that 280.24 million people travelled between April 2017 and February 2018 and passenger traffic is expected to touch 322 million in 2018/19

o Delhi Airport’s passenger traffic grew by 14.1% in 2017, placing it 16th in the world’s busiest airports list(3)

o Kolkata’s passenger traffic grew at nearly twice the pace of all other Indian airports in the last 12 months and ended the financial year with 27% passenger growth(3)

o Hyderabad International Airport has a growth plan that will see it handling 40 million passengers per year (from its current capacity of 18 million) with the potential to add two new runways(4)

o A second airport is being built next to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai International Airport will have two parallel runways and will handle close to 80 flights per hour.(5)

Key considerations when preparing for DigiYatraTo cater for the consistent increase in demand across all of the major Indian airports, the aviation sector is seeking new and innovative solutions to make the passenger journey more efficient and to help increase overall capacity. While the regulations will in part determine how to implement the programme, there are some key considerations that need to be made when looking at how to implement the principles of DigiYatra successfully per airport:

1. Identity– how should the digital identity

token be effectively captured and processed before and during travel for all types of passengers, especially at the terminal entrance. How can this process be made more efficient, especially given the multiple environmental factors?

2. Automation–self-service kiosks, e-gates and automated bag drops will all help increase the speed with which a passenger can pass through an airport and board their flight but this MUST go hand in hand with the correct software platform and consider all user groups, exceptions and the business case for such technology.

3. Software platform– the ecosystem joining all of the key elements to enable secure data sharing and flexible workflow. The right software package will also provide unrivalled information to enable key performance reporting across the airport

4. Change management– this

will be key to the success of any significant process change at the airports. The impact that the change will have on staff, processes and passengers must not be underestimated. Any airport wishing to adopt this significant change in processes must win the hearts and minds of everyone concerned before the changes are put in place. Passengers, as well as all the impacted stakeholders, must be brought on the journey or else it could end up a costly and headline grabbing problem to solve.

Identity as a platformMFlow is an agnostic identity platform that can work with any airport hardware providers to enhance the information related to the passengers processing through a terminal. While the initial focus is mistakenly on the physical hardware checkpoint (and how many of these can fit in an airport), it is the identity platform that can provide the single, validated view of the

passenger and in turn the aggregated view of passenger flow to help airports better predict and avert bottlenecks. This enables airports and to deploy staff to where they are needed most in a timely manner.

The knock-on effect of this approach is a better flow of passengers through the airport, fewer delays at traditional bottlenecks such as security and an increase in the number of on-time departures from airports with passengers being in the right place at the right time. It is essentially a win-win for all parties – the passengers experience a smoother, less stressful journey; the airport increases capacity and improves its customer service record; the airlines increase the number of flights that leave on time resulting in improved passenger satisfaction.

Learning from successful seamless solutionsWhile the scale of DigiYatra will inevitably propel Indian airports forward, there are many

learning’s from other global airports to support the effective deployment of digital solutions. Gatwick Airport has employed digital passenger management since 2010 and has developed its automated biometric capabilities to help improve the passenger experience.

Human Recognition Systems installed the MFlow platform at Gatwick Airport terminals in 2010 to implement a fully automated biometric system underpinned by MFlow software to enhance the passenger experience, reduce waiting times and increase capacity at this single runway airport. The solution includes automated bag drop, eGates, self-service kiosks and iris and face biometric readers. MFlow also takes data feeds in and out of standard airport systems to provide a trusted passenger identity ecosystem.

For Gatwick, this system has helped them to achieve significant improvements across the board. It has reduced their security wait time to an average of 4 minutes, supported an increase in total passenger numbers by 50% (31 million

in 2010 to 46 million in 2017) and increased the number of runway movements per hour.

The airport is now undertaking the first end-to-end trial implementation of a seamless, integrated and biometric passenger journey. The trial will run for three months in conjunction with EasyJet and other key partners, processing 10,000 passengers to break new ground in the automation of the passenger journey. The trial will include the use of MFlow software to manage every checkpoint in the process and to capture biometrics (face and iris) in just 20 seconds to verify passengers against their passport and boarding card.

Before making a final decisionThere are some significant things to take into consideration for any airport

looking to move towards a seamless digital solution for aviation.

- Learn from relevant solutions that are already functioning well in the market for delivering an outbound, time sensitive platform that will provide the solution your airport requires

- Focus on enabling the digital passenger, not just automation. Airport authorities often forget that the main reason for making these types of changes is to improve the journey for the passenger as that is what will grow the airport through increased demand. Put this at the heart of your strategy rather than focusing on the hardware. Remember that a digital solution is designed to last long into the future, while changes in hardware could make it obsolete

- Change management will be crucial – the integration of any system with existing airport infrastructure will be vital and ensuring that this process is handled in a sensitive manner will help to ensure its success

- The technology that is available today will continue to develop, particularly with the changes in mobile phone technology. You need a system that can change with the times rather than one that will remain static and render your system archaic after just a few short years

A look into the futureThe future for Indian aviation certainly looks to be very positive and I continue to be impressed with the drive and innovation from the airport teams to make transformational change happen, ensuring that capacity can

be better managed in the future. However, before making significant investments in new technology, an airport should consider how the DigiYatra options can be brought to life specifically for them, ideally in a platform that can both prove and test capability at a small, proof of concept level and then be rolled out and scaled up in a managed approach to process millions of passengers with minimum amount of risk.

From my experiences of Indian airports, all have their own personality, characteristics and restrictions (including budgets) that this new programme must consider and work within; highlighting that a one size fits all deployment would be unsuccessful. The speed to adoption will also vary by airport but I would recommend airports truly get under the skin of what they need to procure to enable DigiYatra, how it can deliver benefits to their airport, the airlines and passengers beyond biometric automation and how, through a flexible passenger identity platform, the sky is the limit.

India Joins Select Club of Deck Landing of Fighter AircraftIndia has joined the select club of US,

Europe, Russia and China having the capability of Deck Landing of fighter aircraft. The LCA Naval Prototype 2 (NP2), piloted by Capt Shivnath Dahiya safely executed the first contact of the arrestor hook system with Arresting wire at moderate taxi-in speeds on location at the Shore Based Test Facility, INS Hansa , Goa, today. The first successful Taxi-in engagement was monitored closely by the Landing Signal Officer Cmde J A Maolankar and Test director Gp Capt A Kabadwal (Retd).

This is the first of a series of engagement

planned at proving the arrestor hook capability says Mr. T. Suvarna Raju, CMD-HAL.

The HAL’s design wing, Aircraft Research and Design Centre (ARDC) has designed and developed the Arrestor Hook System (AHS) for Ship Deck operations of LCA Naval version. The LCA Naval Prototype 2 (NP2), has been integrated with this AHS. Having verified in-air operation of Arrestor Hook System in Bengaluru on July 23, 2018, the aircraft has been operating at INS Hansa Goa, since July 28, 2018.

Carrier Compatibility trials (CCT) of Naval Aircraft are slated to be carried out at shore based test facilities, built at Indian Naval Base Goa. The CCT involves completion of extensive shore based trials before embarking on actual deck. This trial is the stepping stone towards completion of CCT trials of LCA Navy.

Teams of HAL, ADA, CEMILAC, RDAQA, Navy and NFTC have worked synergistically to achieve this flawless result.

M r T. Suvarna Raju, CMD, HAL flew the indigenous

Light Combat Aircraft-Tejas from HAL Airport. The twin seat variant of LCA (PV5) was piloted by Group Captain KK Venugopal, VM (Retd) HAL’s Chief Test Pilot.

In a thrilling set of manoeuvres, the aircraft climbed to 30,000 feet and accelerated to supersonic speed of 1.1 Mach. This was followed by a simulated launch of Beyond Visual Range missile on a target of opportunity, said Mr Raju after the sortie. It is a wonderful flying machine, capable of being the backbone of IAF combat power in the years to come, he adds.

The pilot demonstrated the prowess of the aircraft to

attack targets on ground. An attack on the ground target was carried out by a simulated laser guided bomb. The

demonstration of manoeuvring capability of the aircraft in close combat situations is an unique experience to even veteran pilots. The landing was carried out simulating low visibility conditions using the ‘automatic approach’ mode of the aircraft.

In order to ensure the speedy deliveries of LCAs, HAL has ramped up the production rate to meet the requirement

of IAF in association with other industrial partners. HAL is in talks with IAF for production of 83 more LCAs with upgraded capabilities known as Tejas Mk 1A.

H istory will remember Misa Matsushima as the first Japanese female fighter

pilot. After completing training, she was officially integrated into the Air Self Defense Force on August 24, 2018.

"Ever since I saw the movie 'Top Gun' when I was in primary school, I have always admired fighter jet pilots," said Matsushima to local media. "I hope to be the one to inspire more people to become a pilot".

Matsushima initially planned on becoming a transport pilot. However, in November 2015, shortly after she received pilot licence, the Japanese Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) lifted the ban for females to pilot fighter jets.

“I hope she will continue to blaze that difficult path and become a role model for

women who aspire to become fighter pilots,” said her instructor Osamu Uemori.

For the next six to twelve months, Matsushima will receive a training in

scrambling for interception aboard a F-15J. She should be affected to the 5th Air Wing at Nyutabaru Air Base (RJFN).

The F-15J is a twin engine air superiority fighter. Two of them were built in Saint Louis, United States, but the majority (139 aircraft) was manufactured in Japan under license by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Based on McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, it is fitted with several indigenous components, including the electronic countermeasures system and the Japanese-built AAM-4 missile, a modified version of U.S. made AIM-9 Sidewinder.

Women currently make up 6% of Japan Defense Force (14,000 of 228,000 active personnel) − a number that the Defense ministry wants to double.

UPS is working with Palmbox and Chunghwa Post, via its iBox lockers, for e-commerce deliveries in Taiwan. Once Taiwanese customers receive deliveries from international retailers at an e-locker, UPS will notify the customers, allowing them to retrieve the delivery from Palmbox and iBox lockers located in supermarkets, apartment complexes and certain post office locations. Customers will also be able to use credit cards at selected e-lockers to pay import duties and taxes.

According to the “UPS Pulse of the Online Shopper” 2018 study, about 71 percent of Asian consumers are interested in receiving packages via ALDs. Given that e-commerce orders in Taiwan grew 20.9 percent from 2015 to 2017, “UPS’s latest enhancements help retailers to meet these needs, and place them in a strong position to capture a greater share of consumers in a high-potential market like Taiwan,” according to KK Leung, president of North Asia district, UPS Asia Pacific Region. UPS is also expanding ALD offerings in other locations in Asia – in June, UPS announced it was increasing its ADL network in Hong Kong to about 500, to take advantage of growing cross-border business-to-consumer shipments there.

How is Singapore Operations coming up?

Singapore is the first overseas country that will be added to the ever increasing repertoire of destinations from Vijayawada Airport. The ‘Singapore Operations’, as it has been rightly named by your magazine, which has been so eagerly awaited by the Citizens of Andhra Pradesh would commence from First week of October .Few of the important activities related to commencement of the Operations are:

Air cargo Service from Vijayawada will certainly be a boon to one and all traders in region. How do you plan to strengthen the process in Future?

As rightly brought by you ,the Cargo operations from Vijayawada Airport is certainly a boon, which is going to help other Industries ,which has cargo Operations especially those like sea food etc., to have positive boom in their turnover and increase their speed of Operations. Cargo Services have already been started from Vijayawada Airport at the Cargo Terminal constructed over an area of 200 Sq Mtrs.. We are now capable of handling 15 metric Tons of loading every day. Cargo services from Vijayawada are a lot cheaper as compared to Hyderabad. It costs Rs 12/- to transfer goods from Vijayawada to Delhi through Air cargo, whereas it costs Rs 32 /- per Kg to export them from Hyderabad to the same destination. There is a heavy demand for seafood like Shrimp etc at Delhi. Even Guntur G4 Chilli is of high demand at Delhi. Such items are sold at highest prices at Delhi. Cargo Services are a major boost to Aqua and Agri products. Ignorance is leaving the huge market potential untapped. The farmers, industries and traders are to take best advantage of the Cargo Services from Vijayawada Airport and get better profits. Once

Kartikeya.B Interacted with G.M.S Rao, Airport Director, Vijayawada and discussed more about their plans for International Operations. Excerpts from the Interview…
