Functional fillers have an amazing ability to enhance cosmetic formulations. But with so many available options, how can we know which fillers work best for which products? We’ve evaluated the many products in our extensive RonaFlair® range to pull out the key features and benefits of each and every filler in the product line. To this end, our application lab has developed a special selection and categorization system to identify which of our fillers will meet your unique product needs.

SIZING EVERYTHING UP

The first step involves evaluating the base color of the pure functional filler itself. We also look at the pH-value and how it behaves in water or oil. These basic characteristics are extremely important when it comes to using fillers in cosmetics. The second round of tests look at transparency, cover-age, the filler’s dispersion in water and oil, and even how smooth it feels on the skin. We use drawdown cards covered with a thin film of nail polish and 2.5% of the respective filler to categorize the optical properties and agglomeration behavior. Then we take goniometric measure-ments for each filler to find out more about its soft focus properties. An additional test investigates light stability in aqueous and non-aqueous media. Of course, another very important parameter is how easily it can be applied or spread on the skin. This test is then followed by evaluations of skin adhesion and color impression on the skin.

In addition to all the scientific aspects we’ve just outlined, we also want to know how it changes the texture of a formulation. Here we rely on 30 untrained volunteers to apply the functional filler and describe, in simple laymen’s terms, how it feels on the skin. These are blind tests, so we attribute 3 out of 8 characteristics to the tested products without knowing the name of the filler in question. This sensory study allows us to define characteristic attributes and determine how each functional filler in the RonaFlair® portfolio feels on the skin.

To test a functional filler’s performance in appli-cation, we use a face powder and a foundation. Using basic formulations is great for revealing how the filler will hold up in manufacturing processes. In some cases, we even test the whole gamut of appli-cations – from stick formulations to water-based gels and even dispersions or wax-based formulations – just to see how well they can be processed. When all this is done, the prototype products are stowed away for at least three months so that we can see how well they keep in storage. This is a well-rounded and thorough testing process that reveals the true talent lurking inside each and every RonaFlair® functional filler.

SOFT FOCUS MEASUREMENT

This method is based on measuring the brightness (L*value, CIE L*a*b* color space model) of filler powders embedded in a nitrocellulose film coated on a black drawdown card. While the illumination angle is fixed at 45° relative to the plane of the drawdown card, the measurement is taken from various direc-tions across the half sphere above the measured point on the card:

The reflection patterns obtained from this process reveal the crucial optical properties of the filler in a transparent film. This method is particularly recom-mended for colorless fillers as the color (a* and b* values, CIE system) is not covered by the *L value. This is usually sufficient, since most of the filler materials are mainly colorless (white) powders.

A filler with ideal soft focus properties will cause scattering in all directions and this will result in a circular remission curve. If the filler is opaque, the L-values are much higher than those for transparent fillers. A shinier appearance will result in a higher L-value at a gloss angle of 135°.

With this measurement, we can quantify three important properties in a single analysis: hiding power, mattifying power, and light diffusion capacity. To create a measurable value for these properties, two key performance indicators (KPIs) were identified. The Lw and Lg KPIs are derived from the measurements described below:

Lw stands for the whiteness of the functional filler pigment by light scattering. Highly transparent fillers will have low Lw-values (e.g. RonaFlair® Mica M), while opaque fillers have high Lw-values (e.g. RonaFlair® Extender W).

Lg describes the brightness of the functional filler measured at the specular angle of 135°. The value describes the degree of gloss achieved in the film on a drawdown card.

Lw/Lg = SFF, or soft focus factor. This represents the degree to which gloss is minimized by the filler. Lw/Lg may also be described as the circularity of the goniometric L-curve and is a clear measure for the overall ability of the functional filler to diffuse light in all directions.

By definition, the ideal soft focus filler will have a high SFF (close to 1.0) and a gloss-supporting filler will exhibit a low SFF (e.g., 0.2). All values above 0.5 provide good light scattering properties.
