    featuring NEW PROGRAM

  • Slava Grigoryan has again compiled a world-class and eclectic lineup of talent in this, his fourth year as Artistic Director of Adelaide Guitar Festival. The 2016 program reveals a diverse and culturally rich selection of artists. It is the breadth, creativity and calibre of guitarists in this years program that perfectly reflects why Adelaide was named as a UNESCO City of Music. The Adelaide Guitar Festival has gained an international reputation as a prestigious and successful event that showcases both Australian and overseas talent. Beethoven once said the guitar is a miniature orchestra in itself this gives us all some insight into the talent needed to hone the beautiful craft of playing guitar. Enjoy these masters at work.

DOUGLAS GAUTIER AMCEO & Artistic Director Adelaide Festival Centre

Welcome to the 2016 Adelaide Guitar Festival. The South Australian Government is proud to support this truly unique, internationally renowned festival, now in its 6th iteration. This years program boasts some of the best guitarists from around the world, across many genres of music. The Guitar Festival provides a strong platform to build on our recent placement as a UNESCO City of music, and shines the spotlight on South Australia, as the Festival State, all year round. A new exciting element to this year's program is Guitars in Bars and other places, which will see live music performed in venues across our city and state from 15 July 10 August.I look forward to joining with you, as we celebrate the worlds most popular instrument. THE HON. JACK SNELLINGMinister for the Arts

This year, our Adelaide Guitar Festival stretches into new territory: throughout the city, across artforms, into ideas and musical adventures. I am so excited to be bringing together world-leading artists who traverse many genres, to be exploring the nexus of health and music in our new Resonance program, and to be working with Adelaides own world-class musicians. Our brand new venture Guitars in Bars and other places involves hundreds of local musicians in venues across the state, and we have a broad range of films, free talks, workshops and displays by instrument makers throughout the festival. See you there!

    ADELA IDE PREMIERE

  • Punch Brothers made a grand impact on Adelaide in 2012. Four years on, and with a fresh Grammy nomination for their latest record The Phosphorescent Blues, they have taken their deserved place amongst the most respected ensembles in American music. The quintets deep focus on the texture of each song has produced a body of work at once filled with the rich whiskey and rye flavour of traditional bluegrass, and a wonderfully impassioned, celebratory upbeat contemporary sound.

Their 2014 debut duo album revealed new musical possibilities found in their combined styles, heralded by Washburns angelic voice. The triumph of their collaboration was recognised when the record won the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album.

  • Born in 1947, Paco de Lucas world was filled with the sound of guitar, the rhythm of flamenco. It burrowed itself deep within him. His unparalleled passion and discerning love for flamenco sparked a powerful reimagining of the style beginning in the 70s, which flowered across the world. Two years after Paco de Lucas death in 2014, his son - filmmaker Curro Snchez - comes to Adelaide to present

the Australian premiere of the award-winning documentary about his fathers life. Snchez film looks back at significant moments and places of Paco de Lucas career up to the recording of his final album. CRUIS IN' DEUCES

Cruisin' Deuces are artful seducers of the dance floor, blending the southern twang of Telecasters with sighing steel guitar and driving bass. On lead guitar, Rev Dr Z's soulful voice and burning solos meld with the mournful wail of the pedal steel and bring the sounds of Texas, Memphis and

Nashville to Australia for a hootenanny you'll never forget. Their energetic and joyful performance brings audiences to their feet and onto the dance floor as they invoke the young Elvis, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Hank Williams and Johnny Burnet.

    MATT WALKER & SHANE REILLY

    with VELVET MOTH

Alt-country meets space-warped grooves in this soaring final night. ARIA winning songwriter Matt Walker brings poignant vocals and heart-stirring songs alongside Shane Reillys sweeping pedal steel. They perform a show together, often taking his songs out into cinematic realms.

Velvet Moth is a genre-mincing outfit comprised of players from legendary local surf/instro masters GT Stringer and acclaimed R&B favourites The Streamliners. Their improvisational lunacy, satirical lyrics and 60s dance grooves swirl into a velvet musical cocoon, from which they unleash their second album exclusively at the Adelaide Guitar Festival.SPACE THEATRE

Lord Byrons self described epic satire of Don Juan transforms the legendary womaniser into the one easily seduced. Reimagined by writer and director Tama Matheson with soloist Karin Schaupp, it is an extraordinary interlocking blend of music, poetry and extracts from Byrons own intriguing and scandalous life.

Karin Schaupp interweaves solo guitar music from Turina, Pujol, Trrega and more with Mathesons performance, resulting in an adventurous musical, theatrical and literary experience filled with love, hilarity and high drama. It becomes almost impossible to distinguish the poem from real life stories.

ART IST TALKSART STORIESArtistic Director Slava Grigoryan and writer and pianist Anna Goldsworthy in conversation with theatre director Chris Drummond.

This conversation will explore the inner workings of the artistic process particularly the similarities and differences that lie between an act of creation and an act of interpretation tracing the patterns and rhythms that are found in every artistic endeavour. How does a musician find the voice of a composition? How does a writer find the voice of their own imaginings? American poet and Pulitzer Prize winner Archibald MacLeish once observed, the poets labour is to struggle with the meaningless and silence of the world until he or she can force it to mean; to knock upon silence for an answering music. Join us as Slava and Anna talk about their formative years, reflecting on those moments that led to their success and revealing whats behind their most defining works. SHANE BRIGGS GUITARSFirst a guitarist, Shane began to teach himself woodwork and built his first guitar at age 17. He loved the tactility of flexing, planning and crafting tone woods so established a small workshop in his fathers garage. Through mentoring and formal training Shane now designs and crafts steel string guitars and harp guitars that are highly responsive, incredibly playable and aesthetically refined.www.shanebriggsguitars.comBISTRO by the food business 14 Aug 4pm 5.30pm
