Arneis is a rare variety originating from Piedmont in Northwest Italy. After WWII Arneis almost became extinct as it is notoriously difficult to grow, hence it has earned the nickname ‘Little Rascal’. Luckily a few viticulturists around the world have rediscovered this exceptional variety and are now producing stunning wines from this little rascal. The nose is a wonderful mix of floral tropical notes and fresh white peach characters with hints of hazelnuts and aromatic herbs. The aromas continue on the palate, which is beautifully round and full with excellent weight. The textured palate is well suited to a variety of seafood dishes. Try it with garlic butter chargrilled king prawns fresh off the barbeque dipped in your favourite home made aioli. A combination never to disappoint!

Winemaking

Variety 100% Gruner Veltliner

Region: K1 Vineyard – Adelaide Hills

Winemaking: Cool fermented in stainless steel

Alcohol: 12.5% alc/vol

Total acidity: 6.35 g/L

pH: 3.12

Residual sugar: 1.4 g/L

Planted in the ancient soils of the K1 Vineyard, Gruner Veltliner has found a new home in the cool southern Adelaide Hills where it produces exceptional white wines that capture both the old-world essence of Austria and the modern vibrancy and clarity of Australia.

The 2013 vintage was another condensed one with low yields and excellent quality grapes. The fruit for our K1 Gruner Veltliner was picked two weeks earlier than our newly released Hand Crafted Gruner, resulting in a fruitier and lighter style than the more weighted and complex Hand Crafted version. In cooler vintages, the difference between when the fruit is picked for the two distinct styles might be as much as three to five weeks.

This wine is seductively light with aromas of orange blossom, pear, white flowers and banana with the pear aromas following through on the refined palate. The palate also displays beautiful mineral notes and great acidity.

Known for its lingering finish, this wine works really well with pea and mint arancini topped with shaved grana padano.

K1 Chardonnay is styled to accentuate the characters of Kuitpo’s cool growing conditions and terroir. The fruit is gently handled to ensure aromatics are retained, with French oak and malolactic fermentation used to enhance the wine’s purity of fruit character.

2012 was a dream vintage in terms of quality. The season was dry and conditions during ripening were excellent, with mild days and cool to cold nights ensuring good acidty in the fruit. The generally lower crop potential and large canopies resulted in rapid ripening in early varieties and some of the best quality fruit for a number of years. Flavours are well developed, with good sugar to acid ratios. The 2012 Chardonnay shows true elegance in style with lovely aromas of peach, honeysuckle, vanilla and citrus on the nose. Crisp apple, citrus and kaffir lime leaves on the palate compliments a well rounded, balanced acidity. The palate is creamy and textured from the secondary fermentation. A perfect partner for chicken, such as ‘Rustic Chicken’ with onion, ham, white wine, potatoes and herbs.

This finely balanced drop will only improve with time, so be confident of enjoying now and for the next 5-8 years. We suggest removing from the fridge 15 minutes before serving.

Adelaide Hills cool-climate Pinot Noir has long been regarded as the best S.A. can produce. The K1 vines are of low yield and are pruned to arched canes for extra light interception on the fruit and optimum balance. Hand harvesting the fruit ensures that the grapes are in top condition for their traditional vinification. This Pinot Noir is a stellar example of the exceptional quality of the 2012 vintage. The nose is lifted and lively with aromas of dark cherries, quince and delicate hints of clove and pepper spice. The palate shows elegance with pretty floral notes, strawberry, cherry and plum. The more savoury notes include Middle Eastern Spices and black summer truffles. Pair with local favourite such as wild duck or enjoy a glass or two with family and friends. Further cellaring of 5-10 years will bring out the savoury and earthy characters synonymous with high-quality Pinot’s.

The Middle Hill Shiraz is sourced from the ‘middle hill’ of the K1 vineyard, a

picturesque sandstone ridge producing elegant, spicy, cool climate style

Shiraz.

The nose shows beautiful ripe plum, stewed rhubarb and apple pie with

hints of black pepper, coffee and chocolate.

The palate starts off with white pepper followed by blackberry and mulberry

aromas. This wine is medium-bodied with a silky mouth feel and well

integrated tannins.

The Middle Hills Shiraz is an easy drinking, food friendly and well balanced

Shiraz. Try it with dishes such as caramelised pork belly with sticky rice and

Asian greens.

Although drinking really well at the moment, this wine will age beautifully

for 10 years.

Open canopies and low yields at Kuitpo Vineyard ensure our grapes are matured to optimum ripeness. The 2012 vintage was low yielding, which resulted in excellent fruit quality and great concentration. This wine is bright crimson in colour and offers lifted aromas of musk, blueberry and mint with added herbaceous notes. The aromas follow through on the palate accompanied by intense blackcurrant and cherry tobacco notes with toast and vanillin influences from 20 months maturation in predominantly French oak. The wine is elegant and lean with powerful tannins and a lengthy finish. This classic cool climate Cabernet is a complex and polished wine that can be cellared for up to 15 years, allowing the tannins to soften.

The K1 Shiraz 2012 has a dense inky colour, with excellent concentration. The nose shows beautiful plum and black cherry fruit with cloves and black pepper. It is reflecting the generosity of the K1 vineyard ‘terrior’ on the Shiraz variety. The palate is rich and full with a firm structural finish. The concentrated fruit flavours are well balanced with a mix of quality French and American oak. The spiciness is carried through from the nose with silken tannins to finish off perfectly. Although enjoyable now, the combination of these qualities suggest this wine will age gracefully well into the next decade. To allow the superb characters of this wine to show, we suggest decanting and/or breathing before service.
