ADHESIVES

INTRODUCTION• Materials employed for sticking, or adhering, one surface to another are

known as Adhesives. Forms are liquid, paste, powder and dry film. The commercial adhesives include pastes; glues; proxylin cements; rubber cements; synthetic rubbers; and natural mucilages.

• Adhesives are characterized by ----1. The degree of tack, or stickiness, 2. By strength of bond after setting or drying,3. By rapidity of bonding4. And by durability.

CLASSIFICATION

Adhesives can be grouped in five classifications based on chemical composition.

1. Natural adhesives2. Casein-latex adhesives3. Thermoplastic adhesives 4. Thermosetting adhesives5. Plastics

NATURAL ADHESIVES

Natural adhesives can also be classified into three parts---

• Casein• Animal based• Plant based

CASEIN

• Casein is a natural polymer from skim milk proteins used in some water-based adhesives.

• It represents a small but important percentage of all natural polymers used in water-based adhesives.

• The casein formulations are highly soluble in alkaline and water, they thus wash very cleanly off of the glass containers.

• Casein can be cross-linked to give excellent water resistance.

CASEIN - COMMON APPLICATIONS

• Casein is now used as:• An adhesive in construction for wood working applications.• Packaging industries for breweries, wineries and packagers where

refrigerated products are packaged.

ANIMAL ADHESIVES

Fish gelatin: • Sheets of amber clear fish gelatin. Should first be soaked then dissolved in a double boiler.

• Imported from Italy, sheets are 9" x 2 1/2".

FISH GLUE Fish glue • A high-tack adhesive, light tan color.

• Free of salt but will shrink upon drying. Adding 10% glycerin (found in Chemical section) will give greater flexibility and reduce shrinkage.

• This product is commonly used as an adhesive in furniture restoration where long drying times are preferred, and has excellent resistance to solvents and heat.

GELATIN --- PHOTOGRAPHIC GRADE

• Gelatin

• Virtually free of mineral contaminants suitable for conservation of photographs and can be used for the preparation of photo sensitive coatings.

GELATIN U.S.P

• Gelatin USP

• Often used as a paper size, pharmaceutical grade, granular.

PLANT BASED ADHESIVES

Cellulose powder

• A purified microcrystalline cellulose powder, partially-depolymerized and derived from fibrous plants.

• Cellulose is a white, odorless, free-flowing powder that is virtually free of organic and inorganic contaminants.

• It is insoluble in water, in dilute acids, and in most organic solvents; practically insoluble in sodium hydroxide solution (1 part in 20).

FUNORI

• Funori

• A polysaccharide mucilage made from the seaweed Gloiopeltis, which is harvested from natural populations in Japan.

• To prepare cut up 6g funori (the web is tan to orange-brown in color). Soak in 200cc (just shy of one cup) water overnight. Cook this mixture in a pan over low heat until the seaweed is dissolved, Do not boil. Cool. Strain the solution through a Japanese silk strainer or a cotton cloth. The solution will be light drab tan in color and feel "slimy". Store in refrigerator when not in use. Warm up prior to use.

RICE STARCH

• Rice starch • For the same applications as wheat starch.

• Forms a transparent film. Unmodified, requires cooking.

• Has excellent water retention properties.

WHEAT PASTE

• Wheat paste• A general purpose bookbinding

adhesive for use on paper, binders board and leather.

• Suitable for paper-to-paper adhesion such as book plating, hinging, repairing torn pages and corners.

• Precooked powder; dissolves easily in cold water. Can also be mixed with PVA adhesives or methyl cellulose.

• Wheat Paste is acidic, pH 6-6.5 (measured in a 70% slurry). To buffer it, add 10% (by weight) of calcium carbonate (found in the Chemical section).

WHEAT STARCH

• Wheat starch • For lining and repairing works of art on paper.

• Holds better than rice starch but is not as strong as wheat paste.

• An unmodified food grade starch that requires cooking.

• Has a high water holding capacity, pH 5-6.5 (measured in a 70% slurry).

• To buffer it, add 10% (by weight) of calcium carbonate (found in the Chemical section).

Themoplastic Adhesives

• In general, thermoplastic adhesives have low/medium shear strength and may suffer from creep at high loading. They have good resistance to oils but poor resistance to water. Thermoplastic adhesives include polyvinyl acetate (PVA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyacrylates, polyester acrylics, acrylic solvent cement, cyanoacrylates (superglue), silicone resins, polyamides and acrylic acid diesters.

• It is a synthetic adhesive in white milky viscous paste.

Polyvinyl Acetate Adhesives

• Supplied as an emulsion in water, for porous materials, especially wood. Shear strength is good. Resistant to oil . Poor resistance to water. Low heat tolerance. ( White glue)

Advantages of Rubber based Adhesives

Disadvantages

• Poor resistance to elevated temperatures.• Fair to poor resistance to chemicals.• Poor resistance to ultra violet light &

Dr. Fixit Fevimate TG tile grout is cement based, enhanced by adding siliceous fillers, UV stable pigments and additives. 

It has excellent adhesion to all types of tiles and is impermeable to running water. Dr. Fixit Fevimate TG can be used for joint filling of ceramic tiles, mosaics, marble, resin bonded marble, natural stones, terrazzo tiles and swimming pool tiling.

DR. FIXIT FEVIMATE PA is a liquid additive to be mixed with cement for fixing ceramic, marble & terrazzo tiles on new surfaces. It is an easy to use liquid polymer additive ,which when added to ordinary Portland cement and sand at site gives a high strength, impermeable mortar for fixing tiles.
