The Challenge: Problem to Solve The challenge presented in this course assignment was, “how do we enable more young people to become social entrepreneurs?” As the course creators noted, many young people are interested in social entrepreneurship as both a means for tackling the world’s urgent problems and as their livelihood. However, many who aspire fail to move beyond the initial idea phase due to the lack of infrastructure support. Some are unable to gain access to networks or mentors that could provide the knowledge and experience to work through major decisions, while others lack the necessary funds to start their venture. There is no substitute for hard work and times of struggle for those on the social entrepreneurial path. Although, multiple online resources and communities are accessible, we believe there also needs to be incentives in the form of rewards to keep the fire burning even in the most passionate of young social entrepreneurs.
3
ADIL Program Objective Our objective is to provide a mentorship platform that transforms some of the barriers preventing young people from becoming social entrepreneurs. The goal of this proposal is to evolve existing online mentorship programs in order to cultivate and support social entrepreneurship as a viable career path for young social entrepreneurs (YSEs) as follows: ● Develop a program based on incentives (incremental rewards) whereby YSEs can
redeem reward points earned, for example, to speak with and subsequently shadow established social entrepreneurs and experience what they do first hand.
● Connect YSEs with mentors via an online social entrepreneurship community
with matchmaking functionality based on criteria such as: expertise, target issue/solution and business stage, or years as a business owner.
4
ADIL Program Goals
The intent of the ADIL program is to:
● enable YSEs to become engaged in social entrepreneurship with hands on experiences
● encourage ongoing education and participation while contributing to social impact ventures
● provide exposure to array of programs and possibilities
● ensure recognition for prior experience so that social entrepreneurship offers growth and professional development
● encourage networking and collaboration at all levels of participation
5
Key Assumptions
● There is a need for more experiential learning whereby a successful social entrepreneur mentor can serve as a role model for a YSE.
● Incentives and rewards better enable young people to become social entrepreneurs, as there is a perception among some young people that social entrepreneurship is not a practical business model and does not pay the bills.
● Successful SEs are busy running their businesses, do not have the time to mentor and may only make time to do so if the YSE has put skin in the game and demonstrates they have developed a viable business.
● Established SEs have the experience, knowledge and network to guide YSEs, and can gain satisfaction and a legacy from helping YSEs.
● Participation in mentorship programs increases the YSE’s standing, reputation and visibility within the social entrepreneurial community.
● The YSE talent pool can serve as interns and apprentices to established SEs.

How the ADIL Program Works: ADIL Program Development
How the ADIL Program Works: Connecting YSEs + Mentors
ADIL connects YSEs and social entrepreneur mentors in the following way:
1. YSEs create mentoring requests regarding a specific business need.
2. Mentors review the mentoring requests. When a mentor receives a request that
fits his or her experience, the mentor can accept to help the YSE.
3. The mentoring relationship begins based on the reward points the YSE earned.
Mentors bring a unique set of experiences and expertise to the ADIL community
and volunteer because they believe in the power of mentoring to help young social
entrepreneurs become successful at achieving their goals.
Whether YSEs need help with business planning, market strategy, operations, finance, staffing, etc., they can find a mentor in the ADIL community that offers solutions.
13
How the ADIL Program Works: Earning Reward Points
YSE’s participation is encouraged by accessing various opportunities, such as, contributing to social/environmental ventures, taking related courses at accredited institutions and expertise gained from prior entrepreneurial endeavors, as follows:
● Internship: full-time internship with social enterprise earns 1,500 points
● Education: completed course earns 500 points and degree earns 7,000 points
● Business Activities to support launching social enterprise, e.g., completion of business plan, pitch to investors, partnership agreement earns 500 - 2,000 points depending on activity
● Previous work at another social enterprise (1-2 years): 5,000 - 10,000 points
● Social enterprise start-ups (1-3 years): 5,000 - 15,000 points
● Early stage social enterprise (4-5 years): 20,000 - 25,000 points
● Growth social enterprise (6+ years): 30,000+ points
14
How the ADIL Program Works: Reward Levels
The goal of the ADIL program is to encourage participation through earning rewards which encourages collaboration and exposure to leaders in the YSE’s chosen field. Following are reward levels:
● First Level - 1,500 points: 20 minute phone conversation with mentor
● Second Level - 4,000 points: 1.5 hour lunch meeting with mentor, on or offline

● Fourth Level - 30,000 points: ongoing mentorship or apprenticeship with mentor
● Fifth Level - 50,000: mentor serves on YSE social enterprise board
