• Remember – A clause has to have a subject and a predicate (verb).

• Remember – Clauses can be classified as independent or dependent.

WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE CLAUSE?

• An adjective clause is a subordinate (dependent) clause that modifies (describes) a noun or pronoun by telling what kind or which one.

HOW DO YOU BEGIN AN ADJECTIVE CLAUSE?

• GOOD QUESTION!!

• An adjective clause usually begins with a relative pronoun.

For Example: • that, which, who, whom, or whose.

DOES AN ADJECTIVE CLAUSE ALWAYS BEGIN WITH A RELATIVE PRONOUN?

• NO!!

• An adjective clause will sometimes begin with a relative adverb.

For Example:• before, since, when, where, or why

DO YOU SET OFF AN ADJECTIVE CLAUSE WITH COMMAS?

• SOMETIMES!!!

• An adjective clause is set off with commas only when they are not essential to the meaning of a sentence

For example:• Algeria, which is a country in Africa, is a

diverse combination of land, people, and culture.

LET’S LOOK AT SOME EXAMPLES!!!

1. Early invaders settled in Tell, which is north of the Atlas mountain range.

2. The high plateaus that run south of the Atlas Mountains are used for cattle grazing.

3. Members of the Ouled Nail tribe, who are known for their distinctive silver jewelry, live in this area.

ADJECTIVE CLAUSES MAY MODIFY ANY NOUN OR PRONOUN IN THE

SENTENCE!!

• The city where I would like to live is Nairobi. (Mod. Subject)

• We ate cookies that were made from rice. (Mod. Direct Object)

ADJECTIVE CLAUSES OFTEN ALLOW YOU TO COMBINE TWO SENTENCES

INTO ONE!!

For Example:• South of the Atlas Mountains lies the Sahara

Desert. It comprises 85 percent of Algeria.

Combined with an Adjective Clause• South of the Atlas Mountains lies the Sahara

Desert, which comprises 85 percent of Algeria.
