- PRESIDENT’S LETTER -

Dear Alumni:

We have just completed another very successful reunion season! Thanks to all of you thatmade it possible by attending the golf outing, reunion and or Hall of Fame induction. We know that without your support of these functions and your membership, we would notbe able to continue our work.

The ADM Alumni Association Purpose “to continue our work in keeping alumni informed, aiding in the preservation of school district archives, advocating special projects, supportingand promoting alumni events and promoting a sense of community” is a constant motivationfor us to continue to work on new projects. We have launched several new initiatives overthis past year, as well as having some in the forecast. Those completed were the lighting forthe Veteran KIA Memorial and adding names of all alumni who have served in the military. We also added the KIA Veteran memorial photos, Hall of Fame Inductees and all class composite pictures to our website. We have more projects planned for 2013 so check out thearticle in this newsletter!

If you have memories or articles you would like to share, please do so! We’d love to have them for our newsletter.

2012Golf Tournament

ADM Alumni Association

. . . and by the looks of the trash cans, another successful ADM Alumni Golf Tournament is in the record book.

50 teams participated, with 49 teams having an alumni, faculty (current or past), parent or some other connection to the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn school.

The following teams or individuals qualified for prizes (Note: cup size was normal this year due to dry conditions)

After a year of suffering through 100+ degree temperatures and severe drought conditions . . .

The alumni and friends gathered on a day that started out VERY COOL and then

warmed to sun and fun . . .

Why Can’t We Stay in DeSotoW. Dale Jensen, Master Sgt. USAF (ret.)

“Why can’t we stay at De Soto?” That unspoken question swirled within the confines of my6th grade cranium during a typical springtime school-day afternoon in 1966. The questionarose because I was hearing disturbing news from someone I trusted very much, my teacher,Mrs. White. That school day, and year, were nearing the end. During the minutes remainingbefore the dismissal bell, Mrs. White was educating us 6th graders about junior high.

First, and most unsettling for me, she said we bus riders would no longer get off the bus atDe Soto. Starting with the next school year, we’d stay on the bus and attend school in Adel. After that bombshell, she explained we’d no longer spend the whole day in one classroom.Classes would be held in several rooms in the school building. When a class ended, we’d have afew minutes to go to the next classroom that might even be on a different floor. That didn’tsound good. What if I got lost or forgot where the room was? Even worse, what if I walked intothe wrong classroom - a recurring dream still today. Next, along with different classrooms, we’dmost likely have a different teacher for each class. Why? From the beginning we’d had oneteacher per year at De Soto and that seemed to work just fine. A different school in a differenttown, multiple classrooms and teachers; junior high sounded pretty scary.

I didn’t know a lot about Adel. We lived in Madison County so a trip to town was usually atrip to Winterset. Adel did have some things Winterset could not provide. For example, ourfarmhouse basement was home to a giant ‘octopus’. Its winter-long voracious appetite wassatisfied by morning and evening feedings of firewood but primarily by automated servings ofWest Virginia or Illinois stoker coal from a grain elevator company in town. Brother Bill and Iwatched through the pickup’s rear window while an elevator employee used a tractor and loaderto fill and dump buckets of black diamonds in the box of our ’49 Ford F-3. Dad’s experiencedeye told him when one ton rested on the leaf springs.

Of course we didn’t take any coal unless we left some money. There was in fact, an Adelbusiness that gave dad money. Several times every summer, dad removed the wooden extensionsfrom the pickup box and parked the truck beneath a rectangular, sliding hay mow door on thenorth side of the barn. Bill and I boy-handled straw bales to the opening and slid them down a1” x 12” board to the truck bed. We tugged and pushed, and dad stacked until the top of the loadreached the doorsill. With the load securely roped down and the pickup looking noticeably taillow; we departed for the brick and tile yard. I was always fascinated by the white-hot lightemanating from the working ovens we passed while driving slowly to a large straw shed at theback of the property. Bill and I watched while dad and one or two employees quickly emptiedthe truck. I never asked how much dad got for the straw but it was obviously worth the timeand gas to make the trip.

Once a Tiger. Always a Tiger!

continued from previous page

Without question, the best thing about Adelwas Riverside Implement. New InternationalHarvester tractors, parked in a row parallelingthe highway, beckoned two young farmers toexplore and daydream. Inside the dealership,Cub Cadet lawn tractors and rows of partsand supplies spurred close investigation. Mostimportantly though were several shelves filledwith IH farm toys. Early on, in addition to theever-present implements, 460 and 806 toytractors came hidden inside thin cardboardboxes, but later were clearly visible withincorrugated cardboard and shrink-wrappackaging. Miniatures of the new 56 seriestractors came in eye-catching open-front blueboxes. I regret to write that we never walkedout with a new farm toy. We weren’t there tobuy toys; dad made that very clear.

There were other trips to Adel but thesethree destinations evoke the strongestmemories. I also remember one more thingMrs. White told us that long-ago springafternoon. She said we would graduate fromhigh school in 1972. That year was so far inthe future I couldn’t comprehend it. If she’dsaid 2072 it wouldn’t have seemed any moredistant. I’ve written this because the yearthat seemed so far away is now two scoreyears in the past. The Adel Class of ’72celebrated its 40-year milestone at this year’sSweet Corn Festival. I wasn’t there to tellthem, but because of my classmates andmany caring, dedicated teachers, I made itthrough junior high and high school and amproud to be an Adel alumnus.

Editor’s Note: Thanks Dale for sharing yourmemories with us.
