Eiddul Fitr is still uncertain at this point, however the College will be closed on Friday 15 June for Eid celebrations. In the meantime, here are some verses from the Quran and Hadith narrations to reflect on during this Holy month of Ramadan, .

A L - Q U R ’ A N :“The month of Ramadan (is the month) in which the Qur’an has been sent down as guidance for mankind containing clear signs which lead (to the straight road) and distinguishing (the truth from falsehood)..” (Q 2:185)“Indeed We have revealed it (Qur’an) in the night of Power. show Allah goodness from yourselves, for the unfortunate one is he who is deprived in (this month) of the mercy of Allah, the Mighty, the Exalted.” [ImamTabarani]

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: He who gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will receive the same reward as him, except that nothing will be reduced from the fasting persons reward.” [Ahmad, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah, Ibn Hibbaan, Saheeh].

G I B S The Global Islamic Boarding School’s third visit was led by Mr Niko Rahmad and Ms Yunina. A friendly basketball match was organised as a part of the program with our girls winning the tournament.

During their stay, besides being in classes and getting to know our students, they also indulged in getting to know more of Melbourne with visits to the Ballarat Wildlife Park, Werribee Mansion, Parliament House and the NGV just to name a few. They learned about the Australian culture and environment. Below are some interesting photos showing how busy and excited the GIBS group were. They had a great time confessed by their chaperons and would like to

reciprocate by inviting Al-Taqwa staff and students to visit GIBS in Banjarmasin. InshaAllah we will visit them in the future.

At the farewell, they were quite sad having to leave all their buddies and newly made friends at Al-Taqwa College. My thanks to all those who were involved in taking care of our special guests during their two week stay. I hope the Immersion Program has brought us closer in relationships as we shared many important subjects surrounding education, environment and culture.

Till the next newsletter, on behalf the School Board and Management, I take this opportunity to wish everyone EID MUBARAK. As usual, we will celebrate Eid Fitr with the Jummah (Congregational) prayer at Al-Taqwa Masjid (men) and the Junior Multipurpose Hall (women) - the Takbir will start from 7.30am. It is recommended that you bring your own prayer mats just in case the crowd overflows in the Masjid and Hall, and you will have to pray outside.

Dear Parents, Students & FriendsA S S A L A M U A L A I K U M

C A R P A R K The Administration carpark is closed throughout the day to allow our senior students more space during recess and lunch. Guests are still able to access the administration building during the day by parking in front of the mosque and walking through the mosque gates.

S T U D E N T L U N C H E S During the month of Ramadan we understand that our younger students are trying to fast. We ask that you do pack something for them to eat if they are unable to keep fasting for the day.

S T U D E N T I D C A R D SAll students should have their own ID cards now, please ensure that your child keeps their ID card in their school bag at all times.

S P E E D I N GOver the course of the year, we have found many parents speeding in the car parks. As you can imagine this is extremely dangerous especially when smaller children pop out between cars. Please follow the actions of our staff on duty and keep in line with the speed on the school grounds at all times.

L A T E A R R I V A L S A N D E A R L Y D I S M I S S A L S We are still experiencing many students arriving late each day. School commences at 8.50am and all students are expected to arrive ontime. If you are finding heavy traffic in the mornings, try the new carpark and if you can leave 10 minutes earlier each day, this will ensure an early arrival.

If your child is required to be collected early due to an appointment, please advise the Administration Office so they can have your child waiting for you in the foyer. Students who fall ill during the day will be contacted by the Nursing staff for collection from the First Aid Department.

S T U D E N T A P P O I N T M E N T STo avoid disruption to your child’s learning it is requested that medical or other appointments for your children are made outside of school hours.

V I S I T O R SAny parent, guardian or visitor must report to the Administration Office and sign in prior to entering the College grounds. This is necessary especially in the event of an emergency and also for the safety of all our staff and students.

S P A R E C L O T H I N GWe have many younger students presenting to the front office due to bathroom accidents. For parents with children in Foundation and Grade 1, can you please provide an extra pair of pants, underwear and socks in their school bags.

Be the Change @ ATCHere at ATC we have a very kind and generous Year 12 cohort who are organising a fundraising event for the homeless of Wyndham and greater Melbourne. They are aiming to raise over $100,000 in just three months! To accomplish this feat, of course they need the generosity of the community.

Donations are welcome in the form of new clothing for the warmer weather, blankets and of course money. All items donated will be given to the homeless and money will be used to purchase more needed items.

Posters have been put around the community and other organisations have been contacted to support this great program.

We are also looking to organise a fundraising dinner on 6 June. Tickets are currently on sale at the College.

If you have any new items you wish to donate for auction on the night please give to the College for inclusion. We need your urgent support and generostity!

Ramadan Mubarak. In the spirit of this blessed month, it is clear that maintaining good health, diet, and a strong body characterises a good mu’min and allows greater stamina for ibadah and many righteous deeds. The canteen will not be open for the month of Ramadan hence if your child is fasting or practising to fast for part of the day, I advise that you pack your child some light food and water as a precaution if they may not be able to fast through the day.

Here are some healthy tips to help you get the best out of this Ramadan.

Suhour is a vital meal in Ramadan. It gives you strength and vitality for the day and can make fasting easier and tolerable. Make sure that this meal is rich in slowly absorbed carbohydrates such as whole grain breads, rice and whole grain cereals that can help maintain your sugar levels.

Choose dates, dried fruits and nuts as part of your diet during Ramadan. These provide healthy nutrients and are packed with energy, thus helping you keep your vitality during this month.

A change in routine, like fasting during Ramadan, could lead to constipation. To avoid this, enrich your diet with fibre by eating lots of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Also remember to drink plenty of water and try to be active whenever possible.

It is important that we get exercise and maintain our normal routines during Ramadan. Exercise after Iftar and before Teraweeh prayers will keep your metabolism healthy and active.

Do not overeat and avoid eating foods that are high in sugar or deep fried during Iftar. While these foods make you feel good in the short run, they can make fasting the next day more difficult. Overeating and excessive consumption of high – fats foods in particular may result in indigestion and weigh gain.

Let this season be a time of revival in spirit, soul and body. May everyone who observes the blessed month of Ramadan have a peaceful, healthy and a happy time with family and friends.

GIBS Basketball CompetitionOn 3 May, we had a friendly girls basketball competition against our Indonesian visitors from GIBS. We played a total of three matches. Our Al-Taqwa girls were outstanding in all the three games where they dominated possession throughout. The GIBS girls were leading 6-4 in the first half of game one but our Al-Taqwa girls persevered and finally won it with a final score of 22 to 8. Safa Barakat 9A was the most outstanding player in the first game. Safa was scoring almost at will with her beautiful lay-ups. Special mention goes to Salem Saoud 9A, Ayah Saoud 9B, Mona Haddara 9B and lastly Rayanel Jassem who was another great player. It was more of a one sided affair for the other two games between GIBS and Al-Taqwa Year 10 and Year 11 girls. We won both matches with a score of 16-0 and 28-2. Rodayne Haddara 10C was the MVP in these two games. She was well supported by Emma Hussein 10C and Amel Jawad 10A. Both our girls and the GIBS girls were cheering for each other throughout the matches and they have definitely formed a great bond between one another. Alhamdullilah.

Ramadan Mubarak to all our lovely parents and students, this term we have been fortunate enough to welcome the most blessed month of the year, and what an exciting time it has been thus far! As always, we started off with the Grand Ramadan Opening Ceremony where students from all year levels attended and couldn’t wait to share with us their beautiful voices chanting our favourite nasheed for this holy month, ‘Ahlan wa sahlan ya Ramadan’ (Welcome O Ramadan).

The Class Ramadan Competition, to create the most amazing Lanterns of all time certainly stunned us when students brought them along to the ceremony as well. Teachers and students blew us all away with their creativity and engineering skills! They were so spectacular that they will be displayed around the school to showcase this magnificent work!

Of course, the Ali-Gator Book Fair is back for another year with lots more goodies for the students to buy too. Students are being spoilt for choice with a range of Islamic books, toys, decorations and even Eid gifts! The Daily Quiz for students is also taking place with Islamic questions called out daily on the PA system and two students chosen to receive prizes for answering correctly.

To encourage and promote charity at Al-Taqwa College, we will be donating to an important and familiar cause, The Royal Childrens Hospital Appeal. Each year we have broken our own record in donations and this year we hope to do the same! Annual Sport tournaments are taking place and participating students have started contributing to this worthy cause. This is a great opportunity for our students to reap some extra rewards too, inshaAllah. Donations will be passed on to the RCH on 7 June by our Dawah and Hifz students.

On 29 May, our Grade 6 students will be having a Brotherhood/sisterhood iftar with their Homeroom and specialist teachers. Our lovely students and teachers alike will have a chance to bond and enjoy a delicious meal together, inshaAllah. Islamic talks and some fun activities have also been planned to keep our students entertained on the night.

We hope you all enjoy the rest of Ramadan with your families/friends and may Allah accept all of your hard work and worship during this very special month.

Our most recent exciting event has been our SEEP assembly, run by Grade 5D SEEP students. They put up a fantastic heart touching performance with confidence.

Grade 3-6 SEEP team has decided to run these student-led assemblies on monthly basis. This will give our SEEP teachers to give out awards, golden stars, make important announcements and reminders specifically related to our SEEP students. It will also provide our SEEP students an opportunity to share their classwork and improve their leadership qualities.

The highlight of the assembly was our award presentation to SEEP students who participated in Mangahigh Maths Ninja Challenge. We saw some amazing effort in this online maths competition by our students. Our students have pulled it off! What an amazing effort by our students over the two weeks. I was personally so proud of them all.

During the term 1 holidays, our grade 6 students made their way to the heart of the nation, Canberra. Our students participated in a range of active learning sessions which allowed them to become well equipped with the knowledge, skills and values of citizenship. The program featured a balance of educational programs and fun activities which stimulated our student’s critical and creative thinking.

The pinnacle of the trip was when our students had the exciting opportunity to participate in a law-making role-play. They became members of parliament which helped them gain a deeper understanding of law making in Australia. The Civics and Citizenship Educational Program was without a doubt an unforgettable experience for our students and many great memories were made.

By now we hope you would have heard about some of the things that the children have been learning in their classrooms already this year. The aim of the 3/4 team is to strive to be great teachers, in order to give your children the opportunities that they need to be their best both academically and socially. We have established school and classroom processes, expectations in grade 3/4 and our rights and responsibilities within the class and in the playground. We have continued to promote our school values .

Grade 3’s students were well prepared for NAPLAN exam and let’s make dua that they score with flying colours. Despite fasting during this month, they managed to give their best effort.

Grade 3/4 enjoyed the assembly that was held to welcome Ramadan. There were many beautifully decorated lantern put together by students themselves and they are more than willing to showcase during a parade held during the first week of Ramadan. As this is the month of giving, all students will be taking part in sports after Ramadan with a gold coin donation to Royal Children Hospital.

We will be looking forward in preparing all students on the upcoming Semester 1 exams. Please refer to term overview for Term 2 curriculum updates.

We look forward to sharing and celebrating the many successes that your child will experience as part of the Al-Taqwa community.

Dear Parents/Guradians - Ramadan Kareem to you all!

InshaAllah you are all well and may Allah SWT make this month of fasting easy for you. We understand that often during this time routines change and become busy for some families, however can you please ensure you try to keep your child’s routine as balanced as possible, as they will also be in the middle of assessments and preparing for end of semester exams.

The semester exam schedule will be placed on the website for your perusal. In Secondary, we are scheduling exams during week 10 and week 11. Senior exams will commence at the beginning of week 10. Please view the school’s website for details. Exam week is a time that your child needs most support to ensure they do their best. Please ensure your child has the quiet environment at home and a positive regular study pattern, balanced with some exercise and healthy eating and habits to enable them to perform their best.

The cold weather is setting in. What we are noticing is more and more students are coming to school with incorrect jumpers, incorrect beanies, scarves, and coloured tops under their shirts. May I please remind you that we have consequences for these students, even to the point that when we are repeatedly dealing with the same student, they will receive an Exclusion Notice, which does not allow them to enter the classroom. Students must wear the school jumper and we have a school blazer and

sports jacket. In addition to this, there are students with wrong haircuts and incorrect scarves. We are continually reminding students of the correct uniform policy. Please ensure you assist in this matter.

Recently we had our Year 12 students sit a trial GAT Exam, in the same conditions that they would sit the actual GAT Exam which is scheduled by VCAA on 13 June. The purpose of the trial GAT Exam is for our students to get practice prior to the actual event. The school has invested in your child’s education by also engaging a VCE Consultant to review the Trial GAT results then provide feedback to the students on their performance and tips and a better understanding of how to improve. This feedback session will take place on 4 June.

At Al-Taqwa we are trying our best to keep your child up with future learning and technology. At this stage we are pleased that more and more parents are understanding that each child must have their own laptop. By the end of the year we are aiming to roll out a Learning Management System called Schoolbox, which means all students MUST have their own laptop. Communication of learning programs, and activities between teachers and students, teachers and parents will all be done using Schoolbox. Make sure your child is ready. Laptops need to be purchased as soon as possible so your child is not disadvantaged. Please contact the school with any concerns. Be an active part of your child’s education as their future is in all our hands.

Their team captain Asiya Abshir was the player of the tournament and she was supported well by Marwa Cababidi and Yusra Hassan. The final score was 14 to 4 in favour of 8A. The outstanding players in 8C were Suhur Sheikh and Seehan Abrahim but they provided no answer to the combined effort of the 8A girls. Well done 8A! Meanwhile last Wednesday, 7B played against 7C in the year 7 girls inter-class basketball. Our 7C class was leading all the way to the very end until the 7B girls scored two late goals. I N T E R S C H O O L S O C C E R C O M P E T I T I O N On Monday 14 May a selected group of year 7 boys attended the interschool soccer competition. It was a fantastic and eventful day.

We began our day against Good News College, winning the game 5-1. Hoppers Crossing were our next opponents and proved to be our toughest game which ended in a draw 1-1. Hoppers scored their goal in the last minute of the game.

This meant we advanced to the semi-final, which was played against ICOM. This game was controversial and the boys fell short losing by only one goal. The boys took the

loss well and were happy with their performance in the first two games. All students were well behaved throughout the day!

W Y N D H A M A F L C U POn 23 April two ATC Football teams competed in the Wyndham AFL Cup. The first team involved the year 7-8s, the second were year 9-10s. Both teams finished with both a win and a loss by the end of the day, however it was an amazing performance put on by all of the boys playing on both days. All students showed a great sense of competitiveness and determination, as well as great sportsmanship, and good behavior. They tried their best to accomplish 2 wins, but fell short in the end. The captain of the 7-8 team Omar El-Abdallah, and 9-10 team Ezzat Haddara were fantastic with the way they caried out the role, and presented a great commitment to represent Al-Taqwa College. Some big mentions for best players of the day for our team who played very well:Year 7-8: Abed Razak Chandab, Adam Uweinat, Adam Abdelmula Adnan Abdurahman, Hamza Jawad and Mohammed DramayYear 9-10: Bader Ismail, Mohamed Abdi, Adam Boukhalil, Lukmain Haddara and Mohammed Melhem.

On Thursday 26 April, a group of Year 10 & 11 VET Community Services students attended an excursion to Little Learners Day Care Centre located in Truganina. The aim of this excursion was for students to gain exposure in a Childcare setting and make connections with concepts they are currently learning in a more practical setting. It was great to see the excellent leadership skills our senior students

demonstrated whilst working with children aged between 3-4 years old. They built positive relationships and were very keen to help and be part of these children’s daily activities. We would like to thank Little Learners Day Care Centre for their warm welcome and enriching experience for our students at Al-Taqwa College.

T O P D E S I G N A N D T H E N A T I O N A L G A L L E R Y O F V I C T O R I AOn Tuesday 23 April, our Year 11&12 Visual Communication Design & Studio Art students and five selected students from year 9&10 travelled to Melbourne to visit the Top Design Exhibition and the National Gallery of Victoria. Top Designs 2016 exhibits top student work from Visual Communication Design, Media, Fashion, Product Design, Food Technology and Systems Engineering, providing an insight into young people’s ideas, thinking and creative practices. Our students gained a great deal of insight regarding the standards of work and folio preparation.

The exhibitions at the NGV presented outstanding work by students who have completed Art or Studio Arts studies in VCE, providing insight into young people’s ideas, thinking and creative practices and a hands-on opportunity for students to look closely at the visual diaries, sketchbooks and folios completed by exhibiting students to meet the requirements of the VCE Art and Studio Arts study designs.

The quality of work presented was breathtaking, it was a great opportunity for our students to look through folios from areas of Visual Communications; Media; Product Design and Technology in Wood, Metal, Textiles, Jewelry and Food; Systems Engineering; and Multi Media. The final Products and Artworks were also presented at the Exhibition. Students were able to really understand what will be expected of them in terms of their studies, aims and their SAT folios. The students made comments about the size of each folio and the way artwork and developmental processes were presented in the folios. All were very impressed.

I would like to commend all of the students for their presentation in uniform to attend the Excursion and their constant demonstration of manners and polite behaviour whether on the bus or in public. Students were exceptionally well behaved. I would like to thank

school management, Mr Christopher Hayes and Ms Elif Yavus for this opportunity for our students to visit the Melbourne Museum and the NGV as this will be invaluable to the students who attended.

It is gratifying to see our students interested and engaged.

After the initial postponement of the Camp, the girls were all excited when the camp was announced for 1-4 May. After the four hour long journey and our break for lunch, we reached Camp Coorong at approximately 4:30 in the afternoon. The chill in the air did not deter the high spirits of our girls.

After settling the girls in their cabins, we had a quiet dinner of roast chicken, potatoes and two minute noodles.

The girls were divided into groups of eight and were informed of their duties and activities whilst on the camp site. Every single team did their part without any reminders.

We had a wonderful group of responsible girls who were respectful and amicable to each other. They adjusted to the changes with minimal complaints.

We had a few master chefs who took over to make a sumptuous breakfast. The yummy traditional Arab breakfast ‘Tisiyi foul-mdammas’ which was a combo of chickpeas, red beans with yoghurt and fried Arabic flat bread. That was one yum and filling breakfast. The girls were all pumped up and did not stop there. They had a go at making a finger licking spaghetti bolognase for dinner - it was excellent team work. Qudos to our ‘Lebo gang’.

Our trip included a visit to the Buchan Caves. Most of the girls enjoyed the natural beauty of the caves. However we had a couple of them who could not complete the tour due to claustrophobia. We also took a boat ride along Lakes Entrance. However, our trip to the Adventure Park was not the girls’ cup of tea.

The walk on the shores of the lake at the camp site was relaxing which wound up with a warm camp fire after dinner on the penultimate day.

Last but not least, a hand of applause to our guide and driver brother Mansor Kirahman who was always

willing to take us around the places of interest. Most importantly our safe trip solely depended on our brother as he was the one fully alert whilst we succumbed to tiredness and dozed off most of the time when on the bus.

We teachers too had a wonderful time where we could share stories and experiences on very personal and one-on-one levels – more of a friend and a big sister approach.

I can honestly say that the girls were very well behaved and we had a great time. The teachers are all extremely proud of the way they conducted themselves and how they represented Al-Taqwa College.
