1. ABOUT INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INDIAN SCHOOL OF

MINES) - IIT(ISM)

Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad was established in

1926 on the pattern of Royal School of Mines, London, and got the status of Deemed

University under the UGC Act in 1967. The School is directly under the financial and

administrative control of Ministry Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of

India since 1996. It has been converted as Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of

Mines) Dhanbad from 6th September, 2016.

The Institute offers B. Tech., Dual-degree, Integrated M. Tech., M.Sc./M.Sc. Tech,

M. Tech. (2-Year and 3-Year), MBA and Ph.D. in various areas of Science – Physics,

Chemistry, Mathematics, Applied Geology and Applied Geophysics; Engineering –

Chemical, Civil, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical, Electronics, Environmental

Science and Engineering, Fuel and Mineral, Mechanical, Mining, Mining Machinery,

Petroleum; Humanities and Management. It has been focusing its academic and research

activities on various aspects of industry. IIT(ISM) has maintained its all India character

drawing faculty and students from all over India. It occupies a unique position, not only in

India but also in Asia Pacific, and has contributed to the development of engineering and

mineral sector substantially.

IIT(ISM) offers state-of-the-art facilities for advanced studies and research. These

facilities include:

- Central Research Facility with state of the art equipment.

- Modern Lecture Hall Complexes.

- Library with over 1,20,000 books & journals.

- Executive Development Centre for conducting training programme for officers and

executives of public and private sectors.

- Separate hostels within the campus for boys and girls with internet facility.

- Separate Students Activity Centre with latest recreational facilities, gymnasium,

swimming pool, etc.

- Health Centre and Sports facilities.

1.1 Location of the Institute

IIT(ISM) is located in the city of Dhanbad, the coal capital of India which is at the

heart of major Indian coalfields, in the state of Jharkhand. One can reach Dhanbad by rail and

road. It is 260 km from Kolkata and 160 km from Jamshedpur. It is well connected with

Kolkata, Ranchi and Delhi. Nearby airports are in Kolkata and Ranchi. Deluxe and Express

buses are running regularly from Kolkata, Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Bokaro. IIT(ISM) campus

is just 3 km away from Dhanbad railway station where taxis and autos operate round the

clock.

2. 2-YEAR M. TECH. PROGRAMMES

The aim of the programmes is to train the students in high level of knowledge

enabling them to tackle practical complex problems in industrial fields as well as to pursue

further academic achievements through research. Enough flexibility is provided in the

structure of the programme in respect of lecture courses, laboratory and project work to help

the students to achieve the goal. All the Departments are equipped with sufficient facilities

for this purpose.

Apart from 2-Year M. Tech. Programmes, IIT(ISM) runs 3-Year M. Tech.

Programmes in various disciplines encouraging working executives / academicians who

cannot complete their M. Tech. as full time regular students. These programmes are run at

IIT(ISM) Institute Industry Interaction Facility (IIIF) in Kolkata. Details of the course

structures and admission procedure may be obtained in the corresponding information

brochure for 3-Year M. Tech. Programmes available in the IIT(ISM) website.

To simplify reading this information brochure for 2-Year M. Tech. Programmes the

term “M. Tech.” is used to mean “2-Year M. Tech.” only. This brochure is dealing with

2-Year M. Tech. Programmes only.

IIT(ISM) offers admission in M. Tech. to the aspirants with GATE score in all M.

Tech. Programmes (may be called GATE candidates ) and without GATE score (may be

called EntExam Candidates ) for some M. Tech. Programmes. Various M. Tech

Programmes offered by IIT(ISM) and the names of the offering Departments are shown in

Table 1. IIT(ISM) admits a limited number of sponsored candidates to the M. Tech.

Programmes as GATE candidates in all M. Tech. Programmes (Table 1) and as EntExam

candidates in some M. Tech. Programmes (Table 6).

Foreign / NRI / PIO candidates are requested to see the institute website on ‘Foreign

Students’ under ‘Admission’ and they may contact Associate Dean (International Relations

and Alumni Affairs) ([email protected]).

2.1 IIT(ISM) Entrance Exam

Entrance Examination will be conducted by IIT(ISM) for some of the Programmes

given in Table 1 (as indicated by the subject code for entrance exam) and Table 6. An

EntExam candidate desirous to get admission in a M. Tech. Programme is required to qualify

the corresponding subject of Entrance Examination, in addition to other required criteria. The

details of the examination are given in Annexure I.

2.2 Course Curriculum

The M. Tech Programmes follow semester-based system for evaluation of students’

performance. Each M. Tech. Programme is of four-semester duration. The first and second

semesters are devoted to theory & practical classes while the third and fourth semesters are

kept for carrying out project work.

2.3 Programme Fee

The existing structure of the Semester fees is as given below. A candidate is required

to deposit the first semester fee through online as the Admission Fee at the time of online

provisional admission:

Fees for subsequent semesters are to be paid before the commencement of the

respective semesters.

It is to be noted that at the time of Reporting in-person at IIT(ISM) the students are

required to pay separately the Hostel Mess Fee Advance. This is to be deposited with the

respective hostels.

2.4 Scholarship

(a) The scholarship of Rs. 12,400/- per month will be offered to a number of candidates. The

details of seat distribution with number of seats with scholarship will be provided in the

institute website (www.iitism.ac.in) later.

(b) EntExam candidates, i.e., who are admitted through the IIT(ISM) entrance examination,

will NOT be offered scholarship.

(c) Sponsored candidates are NOT eligible for any scholarship.

(d) GATE candidates admitted in seats against any vacancy in EntExam seats or in

Sponsored category seats, are NOT eligible for any scholarship.

(e) EntExam candidates admitted in seats against any vacancy in GATE seats or in

Sponsored category seats, are NOT eligible for any scholarship.

3. ELIGIBILITY OF CANDIDATES

3.1 General Eligibility of the Candidates

(a) Candidates must possess a Bachelor degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent or

a Master degree in Science, from the institutes recognized by UGC / AICTE. The

qualifying degrees for each of the M. Tech. Programmes are mentioned in Table 2.

(b) The candidate with equivalent degree and discipline are allowed to apply in different M.

Tech programmes. Under such cases, candidates have to mention the name of the

equivalent degree and discipline in the application form with the declaration that such

program is specialized discipline of the requisite qualification mentioned in the

information brochure. The candidate has to produce the “certificate for degree

equivalence”, issued by any of the certifying authorities like UGC, AICTE, AIU etc.,

declaring that his/her degree is approved and equivalent to the requisite qualifying degree

as mentioned in Table 2.

(c) Candidates must have GATE score (remains valid at the time of Admission) in the

appropriate GATE Paper as per Table 2 or need to qualify the Entrance Examination

conducted by IIT(ISM) as per Table 6.

(d) Candidates seeking admission to M. Tech. Programmes of the Institute should have

o Minimum 55% or CGPA/CPI of 5.5 in 10 point scale (without rounding off) in the qualifying degree for

UR/OBC candidates.

o Minimum 50% or CGPA/CPI of 5.0 in 10 point scale (without rounding off) in the qualifying degree for

SC/ST candidates.

(e) It is essential for a candidate to pass higher secondary (10 + 2 level) with Mathematics.

This criterion, however, is not applicable for the candidates who have not gone through

higher secondary (10 + 2 level) examination before their graduation.

(f) The Migration Certificate or College Leaving Certificate is to be provided.

3.2 Additional Points for Sponsored Candidates

Sponsored candidates must have GATE score (remains valid at the time of Admission) in

the appropriate GATE Paper as per Table 2 or need to qualify the Entrance Examination

conducted by IIT(ISM) as per Table 6. In case of M. Tech. Programmes under Table 6,

preference will be given to the sponsored GATE candidates for filling the sponsored

seats.

Candidates must have at least one-year full time work experience, as on 20th April, 2017

in a government organization or companies of repute or in a recognized academic

institute. In this regard, an endorsement certificate from the present employer is to be

provided.

3.3 Age Limits

The candidates (other than sponsored candidates) must be below the age of 30 years (35

years for women, PwD, SC, ST & OBC(Non-creamy Layer) ) as on 20th April, 2017.

The age for the sponsored candidates must be below 45 years (50-years for women, PwD,

SC, ST & OBC-NCL) as on 20th April, 2017.

3.4 Selection Criteria

(a) The admission to different M. Tech. Programmes for candidates will be made on the basis

of their GATE score / rank in IIT(ISM) Entrance Examination as the case may be.

(b) In case of same score, the older candidate in terms of date of birth will get preference.

(c) The unfilled EntExam seats will be filled with GATE candidates in the Final Round of

Admission. But, in such case NO Scholarship will be offered to the candidate, even if

he/she has a valid GATE score. In this case, the candidate is required to submit an

undertaking at the time of admission for not claiming the scholarship.

(d) The unfilled GATE seats will be filled with EntExam candidates in the Final Round of

Admission. But, in that case NO Scholarship will be offered to the candidate, even if

he/she has a valid GATE score. In this case, the candidate who has a valid GATE score is

required to submit an undertaking at the time of admission for not claiming the

scholarship.

(e) The unfilled Sponsored seats will be filled with GATE candidates and if, still there is

any vacancy, then, these seats will be filled with EntExam candidates in the Final Round

of Admission. In such case NO Scholarship will be offered to the candidate, even if

he/she has a valid GATE score. In this case, the candidate who has a valid GATE score is

required to submit an undertaking at the time of admission for not claiming the

scholarship.

3.5 Reservation of seats

Reservation for SC/ST/OBC(Non-Creamy Layer)/PwD/DP/JK/PS candidates will be

as per Government of India rules.

a) One seat is reserved in each M. Tech. Programme for Person with disability (PwD)

candidate subject to maximum of 3% within the respective category.

b) One seat is kept reserved for Jammu and Kashmir (JK) migrants as supernumerary seat.

c) One seat is reserved for Parsi (PS) candidate and one seat for ward/widow or dependents

of Defence personnel (DP) (all categories) including ex-servicemen as per Govt. of India

rules.

d) Forms of OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) Certificate (given in Annexure II) must be produced

by OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates in the format for ‘Admission to Central

Educational Institutions (CEIS) under the Government of India’ and should be issued on

or after September 01, 2016.

3.6 Medical Fitness

(a) Candidates must be in good health. A candidate is required to submit a medical certificate

(as per Annexure III) signed by the chief medical officer (CMO) or equivalent of a

government hospital.

(b) A candidate will be allowed to take admission only if the certificate produced by the

candidate is verified to be satisfactory by IIT(ISM) officials, whose decision in this regard

will be final.

(c) An overview of the minimum standards of medical fitness norm set by IIT(ISM) is

presented below which must be included in the Medical Fitness Certificate:

- Height: 1.5 m and weight: 41 kg.

- Chest measurement: 69 cm. and Expansion: 5 cm.

- Vision: Should be normal. In case of defective vision, it should be corrected to 6/9 in both eyes or 6/6 in

the better eye.

- Hearing: Should be normal.

- Heart & Lungs: Should not have any abnormality.

- No history of mental diseases or epileptic fits.

- There may be some additional medical fitness criteria for some M. Tech. Programmes as mentioned in

Table 2.

4. ADMISSION PROCEDURE

(a) Program-wise separate online application is required to be submitted through online

portal, which will remain available in the IIT(ISM) website www.iitism.ac.in from

March 10, 2017 to April 20, 2017.

(b) Non-refundable application fee for each programme is Rs. 500/- for UR/OBC(NCL)

candidates and Rs. 250/- for SC/ST/PwD/Women candidates. The application fee is to be

paid by online payment gateway only along with the online application.

(c) It is the responsibility of the candidate, to ensure his/her all eligibility criteria for a

particular programme, as mentioned in this information brochure, for applying the

M. Tech. Programme(s).

(d) The M. Tech. admission will be through online counselling based on the GATE score /

rank in the Entrance Exam conducted by IIT(ISM), as per schedule given in Table 5. The

details of counselling procedure is given in Annexure IV.

(e) Image quality of the uploaded documents must be good enough to enable easy

verification of the documents/items. Care should be taken to scan of the documents (with

file format jpg/jpeg) with the help of high quality scanner. The candidate should check

the quality of the soft document before uploading.

(f) The following documents are to be uploaded during the document uploading for online

counselling.

(i) Secondary/Matriculation/High School (10th level) Certificate (for proof of date of birth).

(ii) Higher Secondary/Intermediate (12th level) Marks-Sheet (for checking the subjects).

(iii) Qualifying Degree Marks-Sheet of final semester / final year (7th semester / pre-final year marks-

sheet for the ‘appearing candidates’ whose final semester / final year results are pending. Such

candidate is required to upload a certificate from Principal / Registrar / Head of the Institute

indicating that the student has appeared in final semester / final year exam of the qualifying degree

and whose result is pending).

(iv) Uploading of “certificate for degree equivalence)” (if applicable)

(v) Valid GATE score card as indicated in the application form (for GATE-candidates)

(vi) Caste certificate to avail seat reservation under SC/ ST / OBC(NCL) category. (The OBC(NCL)

certificate as per Annexure II and issued on or after September 01, 2016)

(vii) Relevant certificate by the candidates who seek reservation in any sub-category (PwD / DP / JK / PS)

(viii) Medical fitness certificate as per Annexure III.

(ix) Endorsement certificate from the present employer (for sponsored candidates).

(x) 3-years’ experience certificate for candidates of M. Tech. in Mining Engineering / Opencast Mining.

(g) The admission of selected candidates through online counselling will be provisional after

online payment of admission fee.

(h) Four Rounds will be conducted for provisional admission as per the Schedule given in

Table 5. If a candidate gets a seat allotment offer for an M. Tech. Programme he/she will

NOT be considered for subsequent Rounds for the same M. Tech. Programme.

(i) The candidate is to Report in-person at IIT(ISM), Dhanbad on the scheduled date, time

and venue for completing his/her admission. If the candidate fails to report at the

admission venue in-person along with the requisite documents in original by that date and

time, he/she will not be considered afterwards for admission.

(j) In addition to original copy of above mentioned documents following original documents

must be produced by the candidate at the time of reporting to IIT (ISM) to complete

his/her Admission:

(i) Copy of the online application form.

(ii) Copy of the seat allotment letter.

(iii) Copy of Admission fee payment receipt.

(iv) The Migration Certificate or College Leaving Certificate.

(v) 4 passport size and 10 stamp size colour photographs.

(vi) Undertaking regarding not claiming scholarship (for some candidates as indicated in Section 3.4)

(vii) It is important for the ‘Appearing candidates’ to note that their admission will be provisional even

after completing all other procedures & formalities which will be confirmed only after submission of

final semester / final year marks-sheet of qualifying degree and college leaving certificate / migration

certificate in original to the Academic Section through the coordinators of the respective M. Tech.

Programmes latest by September 01, 2017 (Friday). Such candidates will not be entitled for any

scholarship till confirmation of their admission, if otherwise eligible. Failure to submit the requisite

document by the stipulated date will lead to cancellation of admission of all such candidates and

names of all such candidates will be deleted from the rolls of the Institute w.e.f. September 02, 2017

without further notice. In such cases the candidates will be refunded only caution money deposited at

the time of admission.

(k) The documents of the candidates will be verified by IIT(ISM) officials. Admission of

only those candidates, whose documents are found in order and verified as satisfactory,

will be confirmed.

(l) All other formalities related to identity card, hostel and bank account, etc. will be

completed subsequently by the candidate.

(m) Hostel fee and mess fee for the first semester have to be paid at the time of Reporting to

IIT(ISM). Caution money and security deposits are refundable only after completion of

the Programme.

4.1 Withdrawal of Admission

(a) After admission / provisional admission a candidate may withdraw his/her admission.

Withdrawal is to be applied using the link available in the online portal (upto July 16,

2017). After July 16, 2017 withdrawal may be requested through the registered email to:

Assistant Registrar (Academic) at email: [email protected] with subject heading

“Withdrawal from MTech 2017: <Programme Name>” and full identity including

registered mobile and M. Tech. Registration No.

(b) If a student withdraws his admission, all original certificates will be returned to him along

with his admission fee as per UGC notification No. F. No. 1-3/2007 (CPP II); dated 23rd

April, 2007 as given below:

i. If a student withdraws before the starting of the course, the waitlisted candidates should be given

admission against the vacant seats. The entire fee collected from the student will be refunded after a

deduction of processing fee of Rs.1000/-.

ii. If a student leaves after joining the course (or after the date of commencement of the course) and if the

seat consequently falling vacant is filled up by another candidate by the last date of admission, he/she

will be refunded the fees collected with proportionate deductions of monthly fee and hostel rent, where

applicable.

iii. If a student withdraws after joining the course or after the date of commencement of the course and if the

vacant seat is NOT filled up, he/she will be refunded only the caution money.

5. OTHER IMPORTANT POINTS

(a) In the event of any information being found false or incorrect or incomplete or non-

eligibility being detected at any time before or after admission, his/her candidature is

liable to rejection without further communication.

(b) An applicant once admitted in a particular postgraduate programme will not be allowed to

shift to any other programme, even if seats remain available in other courses.

(c) If adequate number of students is not available in a particular programme, IIT(ISM) may

not run that Programme. In such case, a candidate who has taken admission in that

Programme may be allowed to change his/her admission to other M. Tech. Programme

(even if the candidate has not applied for that Programme), where vacant seat is available

in the respective categories and matches the qualifications of the candidate with the

eligibility condition of that Programme.

(d) Students are required to maintain 75% attendance in the semester classes to make them

eligible for the semester examination.

(e) Students are required to observe prescribed Rules & Regulations and orders issued by the

IIT(ISM) authorities from time to time.

(f) The rules for GATE scholarship are as follows:

(i) The Assistantship will be awarded in the first instance on the basis of GATE score.

(ii) The students are required to provide teaching assistance of 8 hours/week.

(iii) The continuation of the Assistantship during each semester is contingent upon Academic performance.

(iv) Assistantship will be stopped due to poor academic performance.

(v) A minimum semester grade point average of 7.0 on a scale of 10 (CGPA of 6.75 for SC/ST/PwD) is

required.

(vi) The scholarship will be resumed once CGPA requirement is attained.

(vii) Arrears will not be paid for the stopped period.

(viii) Maximum duration of scholarship is 4 Semesters for M Tech.

Network Services

The IIT(ISM) M. Tech. Admission Committee 2017 cannot be held responsible for reduced

access speeds due to bandwidth overloads especially close to the deadlines of any online

activity.

Jurisdiction

In case any claim or dispute arises in respect of M. Tech. admission, it is hereby made

absolutely clear that the Courts at Dhanbad and Dhanbad alone shall have the exclusive

jurisdiction to entertain and settle any such dispute or claim.

ANNEXURE – I DETAILS OF ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

o Five Departments of IIT(ISM) namely, Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, Fuel &

Mineral Engineering, Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Engineering have

provision to admit candidates for their M. Tech. Programmes through Entrance

Examination conducted by IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, in addition to admitting candidates

through GATE.

o Such candidates (EntExam candidates) for M. Tech. Programmes should refer the

following Table 6, for the choice of Subject and Subject Code for the Entrance

Examination.

o For syllabi for Entrance Examination for each of the Subjects, please refer to “Syllabus

for Entrance Examination–2017” available in the IIT(ISM) website www.iitism.ac.in.

o The EntExam candidates will be considered for admission only in that M. Tech.

Programme for which he/she has appeared in the Entrance Examination as per Table 6.

However, a candidate separately applying for both the M. Tech. Programmes – ‘Mining

Engineering’ and ‘Opencast Mining’ – is required to appear in a single Exam subject of

‘Mining Engineering’ (subject code - EMIN).

o Admit cards for entrance examination are required to be downloaded from the online

system.

o The medium of examination is English.

o The pattern of question paper for M. Tech Entrance Examination would be as follows:

The questions will be objective type with multiple choices. The examinee has to choose the most

appropriate answer.

There will be 30 questions of 1 mark each, 20 questions of 2 marks each and 10 questions of 3 marks

each.

Every correct answer will be awarded its allotted mark.

There will be negative marking for each incorrect answer and 25% of the allotted marks will be deducted

as negative marks.

No deduction from the total score will be made if no response is indicated for a question in the Optical

Mark Recognition (OMR) Sheet.

o In the Examination, candidates have to mark correct answer out of four options given in

an Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) Sheet by darkening the appropriate bubble with a

ball point pen of blue/black ink.

o IIT(ISM) has authority to decide qualifying score for each paper. Based on the marks

obtained by the candidates, the merit list will be prepared for each category of the

candidates.

o There will be no provision of scrutiny and re-totalling of the marks. No correspondence in

this regard will be entertained.

o Only shortlisted candidates will be called for the online counselling.

ANNEXURE – IV STEPS FOR ONLINE COUNSELLING

o STEP 1:

Registration

at Online Counselling

Portal.

o All GATE / Ent.Exam qualified candidates will register on the portal.

o The candidate will get a unique user ID and password for further process.

o The candidate is to upload the soft copy of the documents required for

counselling.

o STEP 2:

Verification of uploaded

documents

o The uploaded documents will be verified by IIT(ISM) officials and merit

lists of the eligible candidates will be prepared.

o Step 3:

Provisional Admission

(First, Second, Third &

Fourth Rounds)

o A candidate may get seat allotment offers for multiple M. Tech.

Programmes (as per his/her multiple applications).

o The candidate will deposit the requisite Admission fee (provided he/she is

not provisionally admitted already) to get provisional admission in a

single M. Tech. Programme only.

o STEP 4:

Reporting

at IIT(ISM) Dhnabad

o Provisionally admitted candidates are to appear in-person with all original

documents required for reporting.

o The original documents will be verified by IIT(ISM) officials. Admission

will be completed for the candidates with proper documents.

o STEP 5:

Final Round

for counselling-cum-

admission at IIT(ISM)

Dhanbad

o If seats remain vacant, an off-line counselling will be conducted.

o For each individual M. Tech. Programme all eligible candidates, who

have been qualified in online counselling and have not been offered any

seat allotment in any earlier Round, will be called for counselling-cum-

admission at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. Allotment of seat is NOT ensured for all

such candidates.

o Offer of seats will be as per the merit list subject to availability of seats.

o Candidates are required to appear in-person with all the original

documents required for reporting.

o Admission will be confirmed for the candidates with proper documents.

o Requisite admission fee will be deposited immediately through Bank

Demand Draft / Card Swipe Machine at the Admission desk. No cash will

be accepted.
