The grant has come from the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Awards for All’ programme this month. A total of £251,529 is being distributed to 33 groups in new good cause awards announced this week. The ‘Awards for All’ programme launched on April 1st of this year and, with £45million to distribute across England, it is the fund’s biggest ever commitment to a small grant scheme supporting community projects. The scheme offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. The news has come at the end of a good month for the group. On Monday, October 12th, they received a donation from the Co-operative Community Fund and on Saturday, October 10th, they received a cheque for £350 from Durham Freemasons. Although the Cub Scouts were only invested in June, they have already held one camp, borrowing equipment from another Scout Group in Bishop Auckland Scout District. That camp, although only a few miles from home, gave the youngsters a great taste of being under canvas and a chance to do activities that they cannot achieve during their regular weekly meetings. Ian Johnson, District Commissioner, said, “The grants we have received are absolutely fantastic. Whilst the lottery grant is a more substantial amount and will provide equipment that can be used by many youngsters for years to come, the two other grants are just as welcome. They will help the group build up its equipment, assist in training new leaders and provide activities for the boys and girls.” More information on 1st Chilton Scout Group, including opportunities for young people and adults alike, can be obtained from Ian Johnson on 0845 0944 084 or from 1stchilton@ durhamscouts.org.uk. Group Executive members alongside Tom Johnson, Assistant Cub Scout Leader, receiving a cheque from the Co-operative Community Fund from District Commissioner, Ian Johnson. Phil Wilson, MP for Sedgefield, has taken up concerns of Deanbank residents after a meeting of the Deanbank residents Association on Monday, October 5th. The MP shared the concerns of those present about some absentee private landlords who seem to have little regard for the area. Phil Wilson said, “I have spoken to Inspector Bentham who informs me that the police have the powers to close properties and evict tenants who are the perpetrators of anti- social behaviour. However, evidence is required and witness statements are needed. He advised me that the police would be keen to act on any information coming forward. I would therefore urge you to raise your concerns with the beat officer or PCSO in your area. You can do that in person, leave a message on 01325 742759 or you can attend the monthly PACT meeting at the town hall. These are your Police Officers who want to do their best for your community; please help them to achieve that. “On the wider issue of private landlords, I am to take up the issue when I return to Parliament on October 12th and I have a meeting arranged with Durham County Council on October 16th to press for better resourced approach to the problem. The County Council staff who work to keep neglectful private land lords in check do an excellent job but I believe they need to be much better resourced.” MP SUPPORTS FIGHT AGAINST PRIVATE LANDLORDS FLOWER CLUB Ferryhill, Sedgefield & District Flower Club will be holding its October meeting on Tuesday, October 20th, from 7.30pm at Sedgefield Parish Hall.

Ferryhill Town Councillors heard at a recent Town Council meeting of the problems faced by local residents with anti social behaviour in the Darlington Road and Parker Terrace area of town and the prompt action taken by the local Police and Town Council staff to deal with the problems. When local residents visited the Town Hall recently to explain that their lives were being made a misery by local vandals who were throwing stones from the new million pound sports facility construction site alongside the A167 in Ferryhill at their houses, smashing windows and at passing cars, council staff acted promptly to address the problem.

VAnDALS ARRESTED in POLiCE PRiORiTY AREA

Immediately upon contacting the local police, who they work in partnership with on a regular basis, council staff learned culprits had been identified and action would be taken. The Town Council staff then organised for the gates to be locked earlier on an evening at the site, as well as putting burglar grease along the top of the former Ferryhill Athletic wall. Calls were also made to the contractors working on-site to ensure their security guard notified the police immediately upon any problems occurring. Following this, the local residents who made the original complaint about the anti-social behaviour, said, "We are very grateful to the Executive Officer at the Town

Council for his prompt action on our behalf, as a result of this and the police this weekend, we had no problems at all, it was such a relief to be able to sleep at night". To add to this, local councillors were advised that the police had arrested three youths and that their files had been passed to the CPS to consider for prosecution. At a recent PACT meeting, the Darlington Road area was highlighted as a priority area for attention by the police over the next month. Police PACT meetings are held every first Wednesday of the Month at 6.00pm in the Town Hall to enable local residents to prioritise police resources over the following month.

The Chairman of Chilton & Windlestone WMC, Eric Campbell, will be celebrating 40 years of service to the club with an anniversary charity show, to be held in the club on Friday, October 30th, from 7.00pm.An entire evening of entertainment is planned, including ‘The Bobby Thompson Show’, and the award-winning duo, ‘Extraordinary Gentlemen’.Every penny raised on the night will be donated to local Diabetes Care, the Chairman’s

favoured charity.Tickets are priced at £2 each and are available from the club now.The evening will also have a Halloween theme, with a mystery prize being awarded to the person in the best fancy dress. The highlight of Eric’s evening, however, will be his award presentation by Kevin Smyth, Secretary of the Club and Institute Union.A range of snacks will be available for purchase as well as the usual bingo, raffle and mini tote draw.

A West Cornforth woman has been disqualified from driving after she was found to be over the limit.Lisa Marie Dagga had driven a vehicle for several years, despite only holding a provisional licence, and was banned from driving for sixteen months when she appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates. The court heard how the 30 year-old from Linden Road,

West Cornforth, had been drinking at a friend’s house before driving home around midnight on September 23rd. The single mum of three had pulled her car over to the side of the road when police spotted her near her home. Dagga was found to be over the legally prescribed alcohol limit and without a valid licence or motor insurance. She was fined a total of £250 including costs.

DRiVER DiSQUALiFiED

Mark O’Sullivan of Dean Road, Ferryhill, pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive behaviour on the night of August 16th outside a public house in his home town. Newton Aycliffe Magistrates heard how O’Sullivan’s actions, at 12.45am that morning, had been captured on

CCTV. Officers had been called to the incident and two other males had been cautioned over the disorder. The defendant had previously served a community order after appearing at Crown Court in a matter of affray involving an offensive weapon and had also

CURFEW FOR FERRYHiLL mAnbeen cautioned by police in May for common assault. The 21 year-old was fined court costs of £85 and had a three month curfew order imposed with immediate effect. The curfew will be electronically monitored between the hours of 9.00pm and 6.00am.

A new tool in the fight against drug related crime will be used by Durham Police officers to shed light on drug users, particularly whilst out in the pubs and clubs of Ferryhill and Spennymoor.New ultraviolet lights – or cocaine torches – will be used to detect illegal drug use in pubs and clubs and will encourage licensees to follow suit. The light, when shone on noses and mouths, can highlight traces of cocaine, which may prove invisible to the naked eye.Any persons suspected of using the drug or being in possession of such, will be searched by officers, and the light will be used to confirm if the individual has had illicit substances about their

person.Inspector Bill Bentham of Spennymoor Neighbourhood Policing Team, said, “This tool will be an important asset to officers in the tackling and prevention of drug use in the area. Not only will it make it easier to identify offenders, but hopefully, it will act as a deterrent to those who intend to use or supply the drugs in our licensed premises.”The torches, that can also be used to detect forged currency, false forms of ID and UV marked property, will be shown to members of the Durham Constabulary Pub Watch scheme, and their use will be promoted to licensees to ensure that drug related problems can be tackled in the community.

Youth Workers from the Ferryhill E.Cafe have, for the past few weeks, been taking ‘walkabouts’ around the streets of Ferryhill, approaching youngsters and parents in an aim to get more young people to attend the E.Cafe. Numbers dropped over the summer period and the idea of the detached work was to attract more young people back to the E.Cafe. Michelle Pickford, Youth Leader, said, “We have had an overwhelming response to the detached work recently carried out, it was brilliant just getting out and speaking to the young people and promoting the E.Cafe. It was surprising how many young people were hanging around on the streets

and in the parks but, what was more surprising, was the fact that a lot of the parents were not aware of the activities that take place within the E.Cafe and some had not even heard about the place”.The venue was created in 2002 when the need for a youth facility was identified in the Community Appraisal, which was led by Ferryhill Town Council in partnership with Durham County Council and the local Police.Since its opening, it has been a great success. Activities include nail art, mc’ing, art & crafts, pool, table tennis, cooking, internet access, karaoke, wii fit, play station and much more.Portfolio Holder for the E.Cafe & Young People,

Councillor Amy Patchett, said, “The E.Cafe is an excellent facility that we have in Ferryhill, that offers a diverse range of activities for ages 8-18. It is pleasing to see the work carried out has attracted more use of the E-café”.Staff at the facility always welcome new people so anyone who would like to see what the E.Cafe has to offer can attend during any of the following times:- 8 years to 12 years Monday 5.00 pm – 6.45pm Wednesday 5.00pm - 6.45pm Thursday 5.00pm – 6.45pm- 13 years to 18years Monday 7.00pm – 8.30pm Wednesday 7.00pm - 8.30pm Thursday 7.00pm – 8.30pm Friday 5.00pm – 7.30pm.

As Remembrance Sunday draws closer, we are reminded of those who have tragically lost their lives during war time. Despite their being fewer people with actual memories of the First and Second World Wars, more recent wars such as Northern Ireland, The Falklands, The Gulf and Afghanistan have continued to claim the lives of many servicemen and women. There has, in fact, only been one year since the end of World War II where no soldier, sailor or airman from the British armed services has lost their lives, and so the desire to pay tribute, to remember and to pray for peace has not diminished. The Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Eileen Martin, said that this was the one occasion each year when members of the public can show their

appreciation for the sacrifices made by its past and present service personnel. She urged all residents of Ferryhill to attend Remembrance Sunday and would be delighted to see any existing or former service personnel in attendance. If any groups, clubs or societies not presently involved in the Remembrance Day Parade at Ferryhill wish to take part, contact John Rogerson on 01740 652157 as soon as possible.Program of event;09.30am Parade gathers in Market Place Car Park (In the event of wet weather the parade will gather inside the Church Hall).09.45am Parade leaves for St Luke’s Church10.00am Service10.50am Leaves church and marches to the Cenotaph 11.00am Service, Wreath laying and last post.

A Ferryhill man has been given a suspended sentence after smashing a shop door.John Robinson, a 33 year-old from Glebe Houses Ferryhill, slammed a door shut in anger when shop owner, Christopher Naylor, refused to serve him. The door crashed against

a lottery machine causing £80 worth of damage, which Robinson was ordered to repay in compensation, when he appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates. The court heard that Robinson is currently subject to a supervision order, has

outstanding fines of £874 and had been handed a suspended sentence in July. Robinson stated that he had understood that these fines had been wiped out when he had served a recent prison sentence. The District Judge explained that compensation differed from fines and must be paid in full. The defendant was given a six months conditional discharge.

Almost 120 primary school children were treated to an impressive display of secondary school life recently, when they attended a circus-based show at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College. Visiting youngsters were amazed as they observed students from the college performing a range of gymnastic, dance, song and drama routines that informed Year 6 pupils about life at college. The show was scripted, planned and performed by students from Year 8 to Year 10 based on their own experiences of the transition from primary to secondary school. The pupils from Broom Cottages, Chilton, Dean Bank and Ferryhill Station

Primary schools gasped as gymnasts performed daring moves to demonstrate skills learnt at the college’s many after school clubs; were almost moved to tears as an emotional song about transition support in college was sung; tapped their feet to a song explaining the Peer Mentor system and an extract from the college’s summer musical and were transported to another country as students talked about their trips to Spain and the Czech Republic. “I thought it was absolutely spectacular, especially when they did the double cartwheels!” Samantha Westgarth, a year 6 pupil from Broom Cottages Primary School, commented. Explaining the purpose of the day, transition teacher Carolyn Hardy said, “We are keen to

support children in the area as they move from primary to secondary school and the show was designed by the students to help primary school children look forward to, rather than worry about, that new step in their education.”Ann Furniss, Assistant Head Teacher in charge of Key Stage 3, added, “It was our most spectacular road show to date and we are all extremely proud of the students.”Lexie Kehoe, one of the stars of the show reported, “I really enjoyed taking part in the show as it helped me get to know older students and build confidence. I was reminded of what a worrying time it was moving to a new school but also what a good time it was. I thought the Year 6’s were a very supportive audience.”

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,In the theatre world they say you shouldn’t work with children or animals; well here at Ferryhill Stage Society we just did and proved the myth wrong.Last week we presented our production of Oliver, and the 24 children and Bullseye the dog were superb. To the schools who acknowledged our request

for young actors, many thanks for the talented children who you sent along. Well done to Rosa Street Primary who sent more than half of these well-behaved children, they were all fabulous. Their enthusiasm and vigorous acting was well beyond their years.Congratulations and thank you,

Ferryhill Stage Society.

Ferryhill town youth under 11's were away at Newton Aycliffe youth last week. Ferryhill started well but soon conceded. They were 4-0 down after 20 minutes but pulled a goal back through Michael Ball. Aycliffe scored again just before half time to go in 5-1 up. In the second half, Ferryhill were a lot tighter at the back, only conceding 2 late goals to finish 7-1 down, despite playing some good football right through the team and every one giving 100%. Joint man-of-the-match went to Brodie Grayson and Michael Davidson.Ferryhill town youth under 12's were at home to Coulby

Newham and were soon a goal down; it stayed that way untill half time. In the second half, Ferryhill started to play better football and equalised when Ewan Redhead finished from the edge of the box. Another good move was finished off by Declan Grayson to make it 2-1. Ferryhill were awarded a penalty and Alex Quinn gave the keeper no chance to make the final score Ferryhill 3 Coulby Newham 1 . Man-of-the-match was awarded to Declan Grayson.Ferryhill Town Youth Disabled Group, sponsored by Walkers Crisps & Baltic, were away for their first league matches of

the season. This was their first ever time in a league match and unfortunately, they went down 7-0 to Beamish Town. Things got better, however, when Ian Craig scored their first goal against Middlesborough and the second to finally win the match 2-1. The boys had a great time and are looking forward to their next match on the November 8th. The manager nominated the whole team as men-of-the-matches as they all played so well today. The picture that is attached is of our very first Disabled Team in their first ever football league match
