ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSYou will qualify for regular

admission as a first-time freshmanif you:

1. are a high school graduate,

2. have a qualifying eligibilityindex (see Eligibility IndexTable), and

3. have completed, with gradesof C or better, each of thecourses in the comprehensivepattern of college preparatorysubject requirements (see“Subject Requirements”).Courses must be completedprior to the first enrollment inthe California State University.

Eligibility IndexThe Eligibility Index is the

combination of your high schoolgrade point average and your scoreon either the Scholastic AptitudeTest (SAT I) or the AmericanCollege Test (ACT). Your gradepoint average is based on gradesearned during your final three yearsof high school (excluding physicaleducation and military science) andbonus points for approved honorscourses (see “Honors Courses”).CSU may offer you early, provi-sional admission based on yourwork completed through the junioryear of high school and planned foryour senior year.

You can calculate the index bymultiplying your grade pointaverage by 800 and adding yourtotal score on the SAT I. Or, if youtook the ACT, multiply your gradepoint average by 200 and add tentimes the composite score from theACT. If you are a California high

school graduate (or a resident ofCalifornia for tuition purposes),you need a minimum index of2900 using the SAT I or 694 usingthe ACT; the Eligibility Index Tableshows the combinations of testscores and grade point averagerequired.

If you neither graduated from aCalifornia high school nor are aresident of California for tuitionpurposes, you need a minimumindex of 3502 (SAT I) or 842 (ACT).

Honors CoursesUp to eight semesters of

approved honors courses taken inthe last two years of high schoolcan be accepted. Each unit of A inan honors course will receive atotal of 5 points; B, 4 points; andC, 3 points.

Test RequirementsFreshman applicants with

grade point averages below 3.00(3.61 for nonresidents) must submitscores from either the ScholasticAptitude Test of the College Board(SAT I) or the American CollegeTest (ACT). Applicants with gradepoint averages of 3.00 or above(3.61 for nonresidents) are exemptfrom the test requirements. Youmay get registration forms and thedates for either test from school or

college counselors or from acampus Testing Office. Or, youmay write to:

You will qualify for regularadmission when the universityverifies that you have a qualifyingeligibility index and will havecompleted the comprehensivepattern of college preparatorysubjects, and if applying to animpacted campus or program,meet supplementary criteria.Supplementary criteria will beused to select applicants if moreapplications are received in theinitial application filing periodthan can be accommodated inspecific class level or programcategories. requires that first-time freshmanapplicants complete, with grades ofC or better, a comprehensivepattern of college preparatorycourses totaling 15 units. A “unit” isone year of study in high school.

Subject Requirement FlexibilityBeginning with the academic

year 1995-96 and continuingthrough 1997-98, the CSU willconduct an “admission experiment”that permits campuses to admitapplications who have completed allof the University of California collegepreparatory (a-f) requirements.

Foreign LanguageSubject Requirement

The foreign language subjectrequirement may be satisfied byapplicants who demonstratecompetence in a language otherthan English equivalent to or higherthan expected of students who

complete two years of foreignlanguage study. Consult with yourschool counselor or any CSUadmissions or school/collegerelations office for information.

Subject Requirement Substitutionfor Students with Disabilities.

Disabled student applicants arestrongly encouraged to completecollege preparatory course require-ments if at all possible. If anapplicant is judged unable to fulfilla specific course requirementbecause of his or her disability,alternate college preparatorycourses may be substituted forspecific subject requirements.

Substitutions may be autho-rized on an individual basis afterreview and recommendation bythe applicant’s academic advisoror guidance counselor in consulta-tion with the Director of a CSUDisabled Student Services Pro-gram. Although the distributionmay be slightly different from the

course pattern required of otherstudents, students qualifying forsubstitutions will still be held for 15units of college preparatory study.

Students should be aware thatcourse substitutions may limit laterenrollment in certain majors,particularly those involving math-ematics. For further information andsubstitution forms, please call theDirector of Disabled Student Servicesat your nearest CSU campus.

Provisional AdmissionCalifornia State University,

Sacramento may provisionallyadmit first-time freshman applicantsbased on their academic prepara-tion through the junior year of highschool and planned for the senioryear. The campus will monitor thesenior year of study to ensure thatthose students complete theirsenior year of studies satisfactorily,including the required collegepreparatory subjects, and graduatefrom high school.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSThe CSU must assess the

academic preparation of foreignstudents. For this purpose, “foreignstudents” include those who holdU.S. visas as students, exchangevisitors, or in other nonimmigrantclassifications. Foreign visa studentsgraduating from U.S. high schoolsafter three years of attendance willbe admitted as freshmen under thesame requirements as graduates ofCalifornia high schools by use ofthe eligibility index. Those graduat-ing from foreign high schools (orfrom California high schools afterless than three years of attendance)may be admitted if their achieve-ment is equivalent to that of eligibleCalifornia high school graduates.

TOEFL RequirementAll undergraduate applicants,

regardless of citizenship, who havenot attended schools at the sec-ondary level or above (for at leastthree years full-time) where Englishis the principal language ofinstruction must present a mini-mum score of 510 on the Test ofEnglish as a Foreign Language(TOEFL). Other CSU campusesmay require a higher score. Pleasecontact the Evaluations office inLassen Hall for a precise definitionof acceptable coursework.

SPECIAL ADMISSIONCATEGORIESAdult Students. As an alternate toregular admission criteria, an appli–cant who is 25 years of age or oldermay be considered for admission asan adult student if he/she meets allof the following conditions:

1. possesses a high schooldiploma (or has establishedequivalence through either theTests of General EducationalDevelopment or the CaliforniaHigh School ProficiencyExamination).

2. has not been enrolled incollege as a full-time studentfor more than one term duringthe past five years.

3. has earned a C average or better,if there has been any collegeattendance in the last five years.

Consideration will be basedupon a judgment as to whether theapplicant is as likely to succeed as aregularly admitted freshman andwill include an assessment of basicskills in the English language andmathematical computation.

The Educational OpportunityProgram. EOP provides assistance tostudents from low-income and low-education families among Californiaresidents who wish to pursue acollege education. It is designed as aspecial admission and supportprogram for students who possess thepotential and motivation to succeed.

Veterans. Veterans of United Statesactive duty military service withhonorable discharges applying foradmission within four years of theirdate of discharge and who are alsoCalifornia residents, may be admittedas first-time freshmen, even thoughsuch applicants are not otherwiseeligible. Veterans who wish to beadmitted under this provision shouldcontact an Admissions Counselor.

High School Non-Graduates.Applicants over 18 years of age whohave not graduated from high schoolare considered for admission onlywhen their preparation in all otherways is such that CSU, Sacramentobelieves their promise of academicsuccess is equivalent to that ofeligible California high schoolgraduates. These applicants may berequired to submit scores of the ACTor SAT I. Applicants should consultwith an Admissions Counselorconcerning eligibility for admission.

High School Students. Students stillenrolled in high school will beconsidered for enrollment incertain special programs if recom-mended by their principal and theappropriate campus departmentchair and if their preparation isequivalent to that required ofeligible California high schoolgraduates. Such admission is onlyfor a given program and does not

constitute the right to continuedenrollment. These programs include(1) Accelerated College Entrance(ACE) for talented students who canbenefit from accelerated academicstudies, (2) Capitol Center MESA forunderrepresented students in CSUmathematics, engineering andscience programs, (3) the SpecialHigh School Student program forunderrepresented students majoringin programs other than mathemat-ics, engineering and science andapplicants who have been admittedto CSUS for a subsequent semester.Students accepted into theseprograms qualify for reduced fees(total of $5 per semester).

High school students otherthan those accepted into the aboveprograms may also enroll concur-rently in college courses withoutfee reduction upon approval ofparents, high school principal andappropriate department chairs.

Applicants Not Regularly Eligible.Applicants not admissible underone of the above provisions shouldenroll at a community college oranother appropriate institution inorder to meet eligibility require-ments. Only under the mostunusual circumstances and only byspecial action will such applicantsbe admitted to CSU, Sacramento.

ADVANCED PLACEMENTAND EXAMS

Students may earn 6 units ofcredit for each Advanced Place-ment (AP) examination for which ascore of 3, 4 or 5 is earned.

Additionally, students whopass both parts of the CSU EnglishEquivalency Examination (EEE)may earn 6 units of college credit,3 units of which will meet theGeneral Education written compo-sition requirement.

Transferable college coursescompleted as a high school studentwill be evaluated for possiblecollege credit upon receipt of anofficial college transcript.
