BACKGROUND It seems to be generally understood that Student Unions

become the “living room” and the “home away from home” for many students, especially those who live on campus.

Student balance is when the students desires and finds balance between their academic life and their college life.

The focus is primarily on students and their needs,

and on Student Unions and their support in providing

the space for these aspects of the student’s life.

The purpose of this literature review is to develop an understanding related to the design of ideal student spaces in University Student Unions that have the potential to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve the quality of student life and that affords student balance and achievement.

The idea of a student union was first established at Oxford University in 1823

The first student union in America was Houston Hall, at the University of Pennsylvania, which opened in January 2, 1896 and remains in operation to this day and is based on the models of the Cambridge University and Oxford University Unions

A "Houston Club" was formed, allowing membership to only male students and charging yearly dues of two dollars. Bennett Hall, a version of Houston Hall exclusively for women, was built in 1926

The original Houston Hall contained a bowling alley, swimming pool, music room, gymnasium, theater, and a billiards room as well as lounge and reception areas.

Student Unions are established at a national level

The largest student unions have strong political identity, with interest in their “vision” of higher education rather than the interests of the student body

Her goals and objectives include providing a space where the students can socialize, study, take breaks, drink coffee, etc., and not have to be forced to leave the campus. Students already feel like their academics are a necessity and don’t get to enjoy their years of being young. Having a place to stay on campus can give them the interest or desire to want to come to school and may improve their academics.

BUILDING SELECTION & SITE

Like the users, these two buildings will serve different functions. The interaction in the middle will provide views where they face each other to build a relationship. The building site is oriented in order to afford the views of the site, which is on a cliff. The building that has large windows is placed facing the cliff. The building that has smaller windows will be for the administration, faculty, and staff and faces the street and the university.

College of Business Complex at Florida International University is divided into two larger buildings which reflect the two main users of the space
