ALT Functional Requirements• Offshore LNG storage and re-gas terminal under development by

affiliates of ExxonMobil, Qatar Petroleum, and Edison for installation in Northern Adriatic, 17 km east of Porto Levante, Italy

• Designed to deliver annual average of 8.0 billion standard cubicmeters of gas

• 80% of terminal capacity reserved for supply of LNG from Qatar’sNorth Field by Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company Ltd. (II)

• Can berth LNG carriers ranging in size from 65,000 to 152,000 m3

• LNG offloading via three innovative loading arms and one vapor return arm with enhanced operability in exposed conditions

• Two LNG storage tanks with total working capacity of 250,000 m3

• 30-in diameter, 40-km long gas pipeline to onshore metering station

ALT Project Commitment to HSE

• Deliver a safe, reliable, and operable facility at minimum cost through simple and effective design

• Comply with all locally applicable laws and regulations, and responsible standards in the absence of applicable regulations

• Personnel safety is a core value of the Project• All accidents are preventable

Environmental Design Criteria

• Metocean criteria (wind and waves) based on calibrated North Adriatic hindcast which includes 20 continuous years of data plus 34 storms spanning 36 years

• Geotechnical criteria based on site-specific soil investigation utilizing Piezo Cone Penetrometer Tests (PCPT) and soil borings

• Seismic hazards based on a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) by D’Appolonia and a two-tier design approach (Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE) and Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE))

Modular LNG Storage Tanks• Self-standing, prismatic tank utilizing internal truss

system => constructed entirely of 9% nickel steel• Geometry conducive to panel line fabrication and

automated welding => more efficient and tightly controlled fabrication process

• Designed not to leak during life of terminal => rigorous fracture mechanics design and extensive non-destructive test inspection

• Secondary containment system sized to contain any credible leak => provides extra measure of safety

Unique LNG Offloading Arms• Exposed location offshore requires specially adapted

offloading arms to accommodate wave induced motions• Conventional loading arms not well suited to this

application because:– Conventional cryogenic swivels more prone to wear-out

prematurely under expected range of motions– Connecting the arm(s) to a moving manifold on the LNG carrier

is more difficult and could damage flange sealing face

• FMC Technologies developed “Cable Targeting System” (CTS) to increase allowable range of motions (by up to factor of 4)

Summary• ALT Terminal will represent an industry “first” and set a

standard for future such terminals • Safety, reliability, operability, and cost effectiveness of

the ALT Terminal has been enhanced by the:– Marriage of conventional technology (concrete GBS and LNG re-

gas facilities) – Logical extension of existing technology (LNG offloading arms

equipped with cable targeting system) – Judicious integration of new technology (Modular LNG tanks)

• ALT Project is committed to HSE => all accidents are preventable
