ExploreAARP Driver Safety8-Hour Introductory Course The state of Minnesota offers a 10% insurance discount to adults 55 and older completing this 8-hour course. It takes place in a classroom setting using a workbook. You will learn tips to keep you driving longer safely, and how to cope with changes that occur as you grow older. At the end of two 4-hour sessions, you’ll receive a certificate to present to your insurance agent. AARP members receive a $2.00 discount on the tuition. During this participatory class, chef and cookbook author Amalia Moreno-Damgaard will introduce you to the typical ingredients of Central American Guatemalan cuisine: corn, tomatoes, peppers, beans, plantains, tomatillos. Wild Game Cooking Nancy Frank was an on-air producer for a public television program called Outdoor Wisconsin, also aired on Minnesota Public Television from time to time, for over 20 years. One of the popular segment topics was wild game cooking. Nancy will share some of her excellent cooking techniques and recipes for wild game from the cookbook she co-authored. She will share hints on preparing venison and salmon, and will answer questions on other types of wild game. There will be samples to taste!

Scandinavian Canning and Preserving After a demonstration of basic canning and preserving techniques, we will prepare and can a soup and a sauce. We will also make one of Scandinavia’s most distinctive dishes, gravlax, a method of preserving raw fish. Don’t be put off by the name or by the associations! Cold-cured with sugar, salt, and fresh dill, modern gravlax has a fresh, delicate flavor and is delicious served either as an elegant appetizer or as a topping for smørrebrød, open-faced sandwiches.

Each participant receives one basket, lined with poly-plastic and finished with rope, and enough supplies, with plenty of choices, to fill the basket with an abode, figurine, landscaping, plants, soil and more. Made From Clay— A Pottery Watering Can Look what I made: A a pottery watering can that doesn’t leak. . . much. With instructor Kelly Hoyum’s guidance, you will design and plan a usable watering can. Using proper slab-building techniques to create your pottery, you will glaze and personalize your own watering can. The technique used to make this item means that it is truly made by hand. No mold or objects are used to shape the item - just your bare hands. Clay firing is off-site. You will be notified when your finished item can be picked up at the Edina Community Center - in approximately two weeks.

Kettlebells— Intermediate/Advanced Build upon your existing kettlebell skills and take your fitness to the next level! Community ResourcesMetro South Adult Basic Education (formerly known as SHAPE) partners with the Minnesota Department of Education and school districts in Edina, Eden Prairie, Richfield and Bloomington to offer adult basic education opportunities in a supportive environment. A range of day and evening classes include ESL classes for English learners, preparation for both the General Education Development (GED) exam and high school diploma completion, and career exploration and preparation. www.metrosouth.org

Adaptive Recreation and Learning Exchange (AR&LE) is a partnership between the cities and Community Education programs of Edina, Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Richfield. AR&LE consists of two parts. Adaptive Recreation offers social programs and activities including bowling, swimming and skiing. The Learning Exchange offers classes in cooking, independent living, and heath and fitness.
