Welcome to the 2009 Adult Course Guide. In this guideyou will find details of all of our day, evening andflexible learning courses, covering all levels of abilityfrom basic skills to foundation degrees.

Every year hundreds of people enrol on courses at RiversideCollege. Whatever your needs or ambitions we hope you will finda course within this guide and look forward to welcoming you tothe College.

We make every effort to ensure the information in this guide is correct at the time of

publication. However, we reserve the right to make changes to our course offering

for operational reasons.

Courses operate subject to sufficient numbers, and places are allocated on a first

come first served basis. The College’s liability will extend only to the reimbursement of

fees paid if the course is closed.

If a student decides to withdraw from a course, the fees refundable are dependant

on the length of the course and the number of weeks into the course the student

withdraws, unless a medical certificate is formally produced.

Telephone enrolment starts on 1st July 2009, 9.00am - 4.30pmdaily where you see a next to your course.

International Students:

Applicants from overseas are required to access the full guidance andadmissions process in line with equal opportunities. Please enquire withStudent Services on 0151 257 2800 for international student fees.

How do I pay?

Course fees should be paid at enrolment by cash, cheque (supportedby a valid banker’s cheque card) or credit card.

We accept SOLO and major credit/debit cards (eg Mastercard, Visa,

Switch, Delta). We do not accept American Express.

Financial Assistance & Fee Concessions:

If you are worried about the cost of learning, there are lots of financialpackages available to provide help towards study costs and other expenses.

If one of the following applies to you, you may be eligible for free orreduced fees.

Please call Student Services on 0151 257 2800 to find out more, and whenyou come to enrol please bring the evidence indicated below with you.

� Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) (Please bring your official notificationfrom Job Centre Plus)

� Working Tax CreditSubject to family income being under £15,276. (Please bring yourofficial notification)

� Any other means tested benefit (Please bring official notification,your benefit book or council tax bill showing your reduction asappropriate)

� Dependents of people claiming any of the above (You must bringevidence as stated above relating to the main claimant)

� You are aged 16-18 (You must be over 16 and under 19 on 31st August 2009)

Changes in course fees for 2009:

Many of the fees for adult courses have previously been set at aconsiderably subsidised rate. In line with government priorities, collegeshave had to review and raise some fees under their guidance. We arecommitted to providing the local community with value for money andservices, and there are still reductions available on some courses.Please read on or contact Student Services for more details.

First Full Level 2 Government Initiative

If you are over 19 on 1st September 2009 and enrolling on a substantialcourse equivalent to ‘Full Level 2’ and you have not achieved a ‘FullLevel 2’ qualification before, that course may be free of charge.(Achievement of ‘Full Level 2’ includes: 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above,BTEC First Diploma, NVQ Level 2 or GNVQ Intermediate).

Money Matters:

Please note there may be additional costs to be paid for equipment,registration to professional bodies, examination fees and residentialtrips. Please ask for details.

Many people qualify for free or reduced fees on lots of Riverside Collegecourses. Please see ‘Financial Assistance’ for more information.

Fees stated are for the academic year 2009-2010. Any courses that runfor 2 years will be subject to additional fees in 2010-2011.

Please note:Courses shown on the listing with a fee and the code FC are not

eligible for fee concessions.

In exceptional circumstances fees may be subject to change.

Any fees that are £315 and above can be paid in three instalments.Students will be required to pay the first instalment at enrolment.

If your employer is paying for your course fees, you must bring a letterof authorisation from which we will issue an invoice direct to youremployer for payment.

If you are entitled to fee concessions, you must bring the relevantevidence with you as stated below.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)

If you are 19 or over and come to college to study for your First FullLevel 2 or First Full Level 3 qualification, the Adult Learning Grant (ALG)could pay you up to £30 per week. If you are single, how much you getwill depend on your total income for the previous tax year. The grant willbe paid to you if you earned under £19,513. If you have a live-inpartner, how much you will get will depend on your combined totalincomes for the previous financial year, and you will be eligible if thecombined income is below £30,810.

Please look for code FL2 in the level column to identify if your coursefits into this category.

Train 2 Gain

If you are in employment, your employer may be able to access FREEtraining for you through Train 2 Gain. Train to Gain is a governmentbacked programme to increase productivity by improving the skills andqualifications of the workforce.

Through the Train 2 Gain programme we can offer NVQ Level 2 andNVQ Level 3 courses, delivered in the workplace, which can be fullyfunded for eligible staff.

Student Services are here to help you make the right choice whether youare returning to study, want to improve your career prospects or just tofind out more information. Call them on 0151 257 2800 or call in.

Careers Guidance:

Do you need advice about which course to study or which career pathto choose? We have a well equipped careers reference library and canarrange appointments with the College Careers Advisor.

Financial Advice:

For help and advice about studying whilst receiving state benefits,grants, loans and other welfare issues ask the Student Welfare team,who will be happy to discuss your individual needs.

Welfare:

If you have any personal or other problems whilst studying at collegeand need some support, our welfare officers, based in Student Services,are there to help.

Childcare:

For those who receive means tested benefits or are on a low income,help with childcare may be available. Please ask for details.

Jobseeker’s Allowance:

We can provide you with an Individual Learning Plan that will allow youto show how many hours per week you are studying. You may study upto 16 hours per week without affecting your entitlement to benefit.

Distance Learning:

Distance Learning has proved to be one of the most popular ways tolearn. Studying at home in your own time enables you to work at yourown pace. This flexible learning process has made education andtraining available to many people for whom learning at college is notideal.

As a Distance Learning student you will be provided with specificallydesigned training materials which allow for distance study and you willbe assigned a dedicated tutor who will assist you through your course,answering queries, giving you feedback and marking your work.

Access to Higher EducationAccess courses do exactly that. They allow peoplewho may not possess the necessary universityentry requirements to return to the classroom andprogress on to a degree course after completingthis one year qualification.

Riverside College’s Access to HE programmes are an excitingway to get back into education and prepare yourself forstudying at university level.

You will be advised and assisted to help you select the mostappropriate programme for your needs. Previous qualificationsare not a necessity but will be taken into consideration.

Your life skills, previous employment and prior achievementswill also be taken into consideration. Access to HEprogrammes value these life experiences, and the course willhelp you to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence toprepare you for University.

The course takes only 1 year to complete. All of theprogrammes start in September and run through to June, withexams being taken in the first 2 weeks of June.
