As well as having outstanding teaching and support staff, we also believe that the college environment affects learner performance, and this year we have further improved our estate and facilities. Alongside this, we have a high profile environmental strategy, which emphasises our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and improving the environment.
We’re very proud of these achievements – it reinforces that we’re doing the right things. This is in no small part due to our excellent team of staff and the commitment and dedication they show on a daily basis.
I very much hope that you will join us and allow us the opportunity to help you achieve your goals.
Best wishes.
Peter Tavernor Principal

Asma Ashraf, from Fallowfield, completed a Hairdressing Apprenticeship with The Manchester College. She now works full-time as a hairdresser in a salon.
An Apprenticeship is a work-based learning approach to training and development which will give you the practical skills that your employer requires and the theoretical and support skills needed to achieve a recognised qualification.
Many people don’t realise that apprenticeships are training programmes for employees of all ages - not just young people. Apprentices usually carry out most of their learning at work with some off the job training dependent on the sector and their role. As an apprentice you would be paid by your employer while you are training and learning, but your employer would be entitled to funding to help with costs.
So if you’re aged 19 or over and you are already in employment, why not find out more about adult Apprenticeships at The Manchester College.
Call our Course Enquiry Team on 0161 203 2100 (option 2) or by visiting our website at www.themanchestercollege.ac.uk

“Undertaking the training at the college was great because I was able to learn the theoretical knowledge to complement the hands-on skills I was learning on the job. The college’s salon facilities are really professional and the tutors were really supportive in helping me complete my Apprenticeship.

After being made redundant from his job as a butcher, Chris Allcock, from Fallowfield, trained part-time for a new career as a carpenter on the level 1 Construction Skills Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery.
If you are looking to start a new career, whether you’re in work or unemployed, the courses in this section can help you take your first steps.
Many courses are aimed at complete beginners and have no entry requirements other than a willingness to learn. Most of the courses take between one to two years to complete and the majority can be studied full-time or part-time to fit in with work and family commitments. What’s more, you may be entitled to help with paying for your course and childcare assistance. Whatever you decide to study, we’ll make sure you’re on the right course for you and that you get the support you need to complete it.
You can find out more about these courses by calling our Course Enquiry Team on 0161 203 2100 (option 2) or by visiting our website at www.themanchestercollege.ac.uk
“Having experienced the unpredictability of the job market during the recession, I’ve come to realise that the more skills you have, the more likely you are to remain in employment. I decided to train as a carpenter and joiner so that when the industry starts to grow again, I’ll be in a good position to pick up work.

The college’s funded training has been particularly advantageous for Manchester City Council (MCC) employee Karen Woods, 41, who has not only been promoted as a result of her training, but has also become a successful novelist.
“I was working as a cleaner when I decided to undertake the NVQ Level 2 in Cleaning Support Services. Since then, I’ve been promoted twice to become a senior supervisor. The literacy training I received also prompted me to write a novel which was published last year.
Karen Woods
Occupational and professional qualifications can provide you with formal recognition for the work you already carry out in your current job, or they can help you gain higher level skills that could lead to promotion. Most of these courses incorporate an element of learning within the workplace, whether through work-based assessments, the collection of work-related evidence, or work placements. Some courses do not require you to leave the workplace whilst others may involve day release or evening attendance at college. Many of our courses are fully funded, which means that there is no tuition charge to you or your employer.
You can find out more about these courses by calling our Course Enquiry Team on 0161 203 2100 (option 2) or by visiting our website at www.themanchestercollege.ac.uk

Short courses
4
Whether you want to improve your performance at work or learn some new skills that will enrich your life outside work, our short courses, ranging from one day up to 15 weeks in duration, could be just what you’re looking for.
Many of our short courses tend to be unaccredited, which means you don’t need to worry about undergoing formal assessment, such as exams or lengthy coursework assignments.
You can find out more about these courses by calling our Course Enquiry Team on 0161 203 2100 (option 2) or by visiting our website at www.themanchestercollege.ac.uk
“I’d never studied at the college before so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I have been very impressed. The course was exactly how I envisioned it would be when I signed up and I got out of it precisely what I wanted.

Access courses
5
“Access courses are great because they offer extra support with numeracy and literacy, and for someone like me who was particularly poor at maths at school it has proved very helpful. Extra-curricular activities also offer Access students the chance to improve their CVs or university applications – I helped raise funds so that our class could visit South Africa and help build houses for disadvantaged families. It was a real life changing experience.

Deklon Brown, from Northern Moor, studied on the Access to HE Diploma in Nursing and Allied Health Professions. Deklon studied full-time and completed the course in one year.
Access courses are aimed at adults aged 19 and over who have a career path in mind that is likely to require graduate level study. If you don’t have the qualifications needed for entry on to your chosen course, our Access to Higher Education Diplomas can offer an alternative route to A Levels.
They’re an ideal way to get back into the habit of studying by introducing you not just to the subject, but how to learn at this level. We also offer a limited range of foundation courses that can help you gain entry into higher education, as well as Pre-Access courses that provide a stepping stone to the Access to HE Diploma.
You can find out more about these courses by calling our Course Enquiry Team on 0161 203 2100 (option 2) or by visiting our website at www.themanchestercollege.ac.uk

Learn a language
6
A second language is a concrete and demonstrable skill – like being able to drive a car or touch type – and as business becomes more global, employers are willing to pay a premium for multi-lingual employees. But whether you’re aiming to take advantage of the opportunities in today’s job market, or you just want to learn more about the language and culture of a foreign country, we have the course for you.
We currently offer a wide range of qualifications in 12 of the world’s most widely spoken languages, ranging from beginners to advanced level. We have experienced tutors, and we offer both daytime and evening courses at convenient and easily accessible locations.
Additionally, we offer English courses starting at beginner level and going right up to advanced level (equivalent to GCSE level study). We can help you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, no matter what your current level of English is.
You can find out more about these courses by calling our Course Enquiry Team on 0161 203 2100 (option 2) or by visiting our website at www.themanchestercollege.ac.uk Paneesha Chauhan
