An Introduction ... 100% Cultural & LifeStyle Immersion Programs.

Before you begin to read all the details…. For those who are apprehensive about “living with strangers...”

!We work with very carefully selected hosts. We do not work with hosts that commercially “rent rooms” to tourists. This is a cultural program. !In each region, there are Regional / Local Organizers who have personally visited all the homes / hosts. Just as you may have preferences for a host (non-smoker, all female home, vegetarian, ad infinitum), hosts also have preferences for guests. !You will not be “abandoned” in a homestay, stranded if you have questions or problems. There is the Local / Regional Organizer who is always on call. You will have at least two emergency numbers, one of which is a 24 / 7 number.

A Very, Very Simple Idea ... You will have the opportunity of living the country you are visiting. Living the cul-ture of the country is better than reading about it in a guidebook or textbook or hearing about it while looking out the window of a tour bus filled with forty other tourists. You live in the home of a local host. You meet real local people. You will be placed with hosts who share some of your interests. It will make your experience that much more interesting. You can chose to participate in the daily activities of the host and/or the host family or to take off and explore on your own.

We offer different categories / levels of comfort. Standard - meets the needs of most participants.

• Private Bathrooms are available, but there may be an additional cost. It depends on which hosts are available at the time. It can vary by country and region.

• At no time will you be placed in a situation where you are sharing the only bathroom with many family members. However, you may be sharing it with one or two family members.

• Homes, especially older homes, in other countries just do not have as many bathrooms as do homes in the U.S. It is a cultural difference, not a reflection of the quality of the homestay.

Standard Plus

Private Bathroom is guaranteed, no additional charge.

Superior / Business

• A private bathroom is guaranteed. • You will be able to meet people (in addition to the host) in your pro-

fession or business and who share your hobbies / interests. If this is important, please put this in writing in advance.

Luxury

• This is a different lifestyle. It may be a luxurious modern apartment, it may be an old “maison particulier.” It may be in the center of a city, it may be way out in the country. You can choose.

• If you request Luxury because you want to be guaranteed the most modern conveniences, electronic gadgets and maid service, this program is not for you. In many countries, tradition plays an important part in determining life-style.

• You will be given extra personal attention. The cost for this category takes into consideration the fact that you are staying with hosts who ordinarily do not have people they do not know living as guests in their home.

• Although private bathrooms are available in all countries, the Luxury Cate-gory may not be available at all times in all countries.

Families: ! Your family is welcome. Be realistic. The more people involved, the more difficult it will be to place all of you in the same home and the more time is needed to do so. ! Costs given are for One or Two Adults in a homestay. If there are more... or if children are in-volved, please give us full details in advance so we can give you the correct cost. Changes in Plans (please read carefully): ! Please make sure we have all the details in advance (allergies, interests, bathroom prefer-ences, number of participants, number of bedrooms, dates, destination, again, ad infinitum). There may be a charge to make changes. ! Making changes is a lot more difficult than it may seem. If you change the date, even by one day, we may have to change the host family. If you need an additional bedroom, we may have to change the host family. Changing from Private Bathroom Preferred to Private Bathroom Essential, is another host. Same thing - smoking, non-smoking, allergies. It is not like requesting another room in a big hotel. It is much more complex. !If you request a change after arrival because of something that was not mentioned previously (and put in writing) and the change cannot be arranged, and you choose not to continue with the program, there will be no refunds. Please plan in advance and put all requests in writing.

Costs: ! In many cases, each country varies, this program will be less expensive than a hotel. However, the program is not for those who are looking for “cheap lodging.” ! In order for the program to work smoothly, a number of people have to be involved in setting up each homestay and that is figured into the cost. ! Costs given are for the Standard Category. If you have questions on the costs for the other cate-gories, request them. Activities Program: For those who want more than just daily activities, an Activities Program can be arranged. You can go sightseeing with your host, research your genealogy, go to the beach, shop, hike, bike, etc. The Activities Program refers to activities that require travel out of the host's immediate area. Separately, we will be able to suggest possibilities for different countries and regions; not all countries and regions. Host's Knowledge of English: If you are not proficient in a foreign language and go to a non-English speaking country, and re-quest it, you will be placed with a host who understands English. Foreign Languages: This is a Cultural Immersion Program, not a Foreign Language Program. If you are proficient in a foreign language, this program will give you the opportunity to practice the language out side of a classroom. You are welcome to practice your foreign language skills with the host. However, this is not a foreign language study program. Senior Citizens: !Active Seniors: You can participate in many activities, you can do what you want. You can relax or not. It is your decision. !Seniors with Health Considerations: This is an excellent program for Seniors who want to travel but are apprehensive about doing so because of what might happen. You will know what country, region, city you will be in in advance. In advance of your stay, you can identify doctors, specialists, hospitals, pharmacies that you might need in an emergency. Special Diets can be requested. You will be prepared. You may be travelling alone, but once you arrive, you will be with your host. There is no need to fear being stranded in a place you do not know with people you do not know. You can choose from many activi-ties or choose to do nothing but relax in a foreign country, reading in the town square or people watching. Many activities that are available, like cooking classes and visiting art galleries and walking are stress free and require a minimum of effort. Younger Students: Younger students will be placed in homes that have been carefully selected and are considered age appropriate. These homes frequently, but not always, have children the age of the student. If there are no children of the same age in the home, there are children of similar age in the immedi-ate vicinity. All daily activities with the host will be age appropriate for the country in which the child is living. There may be an additional charge per week for children under 18 who are not ac-companied by an adult.

Most Important: It is a cultural program. You are there to experience the differences, to compare cultures, not for the experience to duplicate what you have at home. You must be able to adjust to a different way of life. Be open to new ideas. There is no universal right way to do things; there are many right ways to do things.

To Answer a Few Questions...

Below are answers to some questions you might

have. They are presented in no particular order.

If you have any other questions, please call. We

will be happy to help you. Homestays / Cultural Immersion.

What it is; What it is Not. - It is an excellent opportunity, possibly the best oppor-

tunity, to become completely involved in another cul-

ture. - It is not for those who are looking for host families to

serve as less expensive alternatives to hotels and restau-rants or as personal tour guides. You must consider

yourself a friend who has come to visit; not a tourist, and

definitely not a hotel guest expecting everything to be done for you.

Abbreviations.

In this section, and in the Terms & Conditions, we use

many abbreviations. We do that to save space. If we save space, the letters can be larger and easier to read.

Categories Available.

The categories are determined by each Regional / Local

Organizer (R/LO). The decision is based on experi-ence, instinct and intuition; not on a list of criteria that

must be met. Each country has its idiosyncrasies. That is what makes a Homestay / Cultural Immersion so interest-

ing.

Standard Program.

The Standard Program meets the needs of most par-ticipants. It provides accommodation in very good

homes. The host and most members (usually all members) of his/her family or his/her friends are

educated and well informed about their own cul-

ture.

"5-Star" Program. - While this option is open to all, from teenagers to

senior citizens, the "5-Star" Program is primarily for

businesspeople and professionals (active and re-tired) who, for professional or social reasons, prefer

to meet people with similar interests and a more affluent lifestyle.

- If you are choosing the "5-Star" Program, please

try to be flexible about dates and region. There are

not that many homes that qualify as "5-Star." Appli-

cations for “5-Star” should be submitted four (4)

weeks in advance of Starting Date for June, July, August and the beginning of September. Less than

six (6) weeks before during those months, the par-ticipant must be prepared to accept a Standard host

if the "5-Star" is not available.

- In Europe, tradition is frequently more important and "more valuable" than modern conveniences. A

manor house might not have air-conditioning or central heating (fireplaces have sufficed for centu-

ries). Even the luxury apartment in town, if it is in a

building that is a couple of hundred years old, might not have the most modern plumbing. In other

words, if you choose "5-Star," you are choosing a lifestyle and tradition; you are definitely not being

guaranteed the most modern con-

veniences.

- The cost for the "5-Star" is approxi-

mately double the cost of the Standard.

Costs. - The costs are printed in

the brochure. One page lists costs for ONE person in the home. The second page lists the costs per person for

TWO people in the same home.

- If more than TWO people will be coming together or parents will come with children, please ask for a special

quote. - The cost takes into consideration the probable fluctua-

tion of currency exchange rates.

Number of Participants

In Each Homestay / Cultural Immersion. Only one person to each homestay, unless two or more

people come together (husband & wife, friends, parents

& children, etc.). You cannot request to share a home-stay / be matched with someone you do not know to re-

ceive the lower cost.

Organization of the

Live the Foreign Life / 100% Cultural Immersion Programs.

Live the Foreign Life (“LFL”) and / or Louise Harber /FLSAS ("LH/FLSAS") cooperates with either homestay

providers or with Language Institutes which are all col-lectively referred to here as “PROGRAMS.”

Regional / Local Organizer ("R/LO"). Every region is supervised by a resident "R/LO." It is

that person's responsibility to select the host, help plan activities (if requested) and to make sure that the experi-

ence is both pleasant and successful. The "R/LO" is on

call in case of emergencies and checks in with partici-pants during their stay. This person speaks English in

addition to his/her native language, if it is not English. In

Page 7: Adults & Seniorssomething different?€¦ · "5-Star" Program. - While this option is open to all, from teenagers to senior citizens, the "5-Star" Program is primarily for businesspeople

case there is a problem or an emergency, the partici-

pant should contact the "R/LO" immediately. The "R/

LO" will respond as soon as is it possible; in most cases immediately.

Knowledge of English.

To set your mind at ease, those with no knowledge of a

foreign language will be placed with a host who has some knowledge of English. This does not mean that

the person will be fluent in English, but will know enough to make sure that your stay is enjoyable.

If You Are Not Happy in the Home... Most matches work very well. The hosts chosen for this

program enjoy having people in their homes and are very accommodating. However, if the match does not

work, and this sometimes happens, contact the "R/LO" and another home will be found for you, as soon as is

possible. This will be done discreetly. However, as

soon as is possible does not and cannot always mean immediately.

Activities Program.

- In order for participants to learn more about a region

or city/town, the Activities Program has been created. - This time may be used to do things of mutual interest

in the immediate area, or further away. - You may request to be taken to places of tourist inter-

est, but you cannot expect to be taken from Paris, for

example, to St-Malo. - We are in the process of setting up Special Activity

Programs. More information on that will be available. - The Activity Fee is payment for the host’s time. En-

trance Fees and Travel Expenses are / may be in addi-

tion to the Activity Program Fee. - The Activities Program does not include meals. You

are not to expect the host to pay for them. - The Activities Program does not include lodging or

meals in case of a two (2) day or longer excursion. If

you want to do excursions with your host, you will have to work out the details with the host. Please make sure

you both understand one another so there are no dis-agreements afterwards. If there are, please state them

immediately. Everything must be put in writing before

the program ends.

Who May Participate? Almost Every One!

- The “LFL” program is for all ages (senior citizens and children and everyone in-between).

- You must be in relatively good health. Any illness,

dietary restrictions, or handicap you have must not im-pose a burden on the host or his/her family or friends.

- As the "R/LOs" know the personal preferences and capabilities of hosts, suitable placements can be made

for participants of any age.

- Couples and friends may participate as well as parents with children. Parents cannot expect a member of the

host family or his/her friends to babysit or entertain

their children free of charge while they are off sightsee-

ing. Any costs for child care are the expense of the par-

ticipant. - It is not difficult to place two people together; or possi-

bly, three together. Any more than that might be diffi-cult to arrange; especially during the summer months.

Small groups may not be able to be placed in the same

homestay, but can be placed close by.

Prerequisite. You must Be Able to Adapt Easily to Cultural Differ-

ences!

Improve your Foreign Language Skills!

- If you are taking the "LFL" program to improve your language skills, you will learn a good deal. However,

you are not being placed in the home of a language teacher.

- We suggest those who go to

practice language skills, take the three (3) meal a day op-

tion. Mealtimes are an excel-lent time to practice your

skills. You do have a captive

audience (usually) at that time.

- What you cannot expect is that the host will give you language lessons. You cannot

use the Activity Program for language lessons, although

you are welcome to practice your language skills while participating in activities. Some hosts will correct your

mistakes, others will not. - For those who want a full language program, we have

the 100% Total Immersion Program. You are placed in

the home of a language teacher.

Motivation. If you are taking the Homestay without Activities, you

must be motivated to go out and explore on your own.

You cannot expect the host to organize a schedule for you. If you are alone or are more apprehensive about

exploring on your own, we suggest at least a limited Activities Program.

Best Time of Year. - There is no best time of year. However, the summer

(June, July and August) is the time of year when there is the greatest demand for the homestays. If applications

are submitted at the last moment, less than six (6) weeks before the starting date, it is more difficult to match par-

ticipants with host/s of similar interests at that time of

year. - Programs can be arranged at Christmas and New

Year's and Easter.

Advance Notice.

The more advance notice given, the easier it will be to match you with someone who shares some of your inter-

ests or meets other requirements you may have. How-

France

Page 8: Adults & Seniorssomething different?€¦ · "5-Star" Program. - While this option is open to all, from teenagers to senior citizens, the "5-Star" Program is primarily for businesspeople

ever, in most cases, programs can be arranged on short

notice. If you register at the last moment, you must be

flexible as to region, interests, etc.

Length of Stay. - Minimum stay is usually one week. Maximum is as

long as you want to stay.

- If you stay for 3 or 4 weeks or longer, you may request homestays in 2 different regions to get to know different

parts of the country, or different homes in the same re-gion to get to know different lifestyles and customs.

Name & Address of Host/s. - Before you go, you will be given the name and ad-

dress and telephone number of your host/s. You will also receive a brief description of his/her or their home

and interests. - During June, July and August, and occasionally at

other times of the year, it is possible that the name and

address of the host will not come until one week to 10 days before the program starts. The region will be con-

firmed in advance, but the name of the host will not be given right away. Under normal circumstances, host

names and addresses are available at least two weeks

in advance. - If you enroll less than four (4) weeks in advance, do

not expect to receive the host address immediately. It might not come until right before you leave.

Typical Day. - After breakfast with your host/hosts, you will have the

opportunity to explore on your own or do what your host does.

- Lunch can be with your host or on your own. If you

have requested the Activity Program, a couple of after-noons each week, you may be taken by your host/s to

places of mutual interest - sports facilities, club meet-ings, public gardens, golf course, tennis courts, horse-

back riding, movies, theater, hunting lodge, etc., where

you will have the opportunity to socialize with native speakers; or you may go on excursions that you have

helped to plan. - In the evening, you return to dinner and relaxed con-

versation, hopefully discussing the events of your day.

- Exactly what you will do will depend upon whether or not you choose breakfast and dinner or all three meals.

It will also depend on whether or not you select the Ac-tivity Program. And it will also depend on your knowl-

edge of the language of the country.

Typical Host.

There is none. It is a cross section of the population. There are traditional family units, with mother, father

and children at home. There are: divorced women with children, widows, widowers, retired couples; and

young recent college graduates; etc. The one charac-

teristic they all have in common is that they are all edu-cated, native speakers (usually) and enjoy having peo-

ple in their home.

What is Expected of You, the Guest?

Think of yourself as a friend who has come to visit.

Treat the host as you would want people to treat you in your own home. To get the most out of the cultural ex-

perience, offer to help whenever possible. Try to par-ticipate in everyday, routine chores and activities. That

is the way you find out about another culture. Keep

moving. Get out and explore the area. The host will have many suggestions for you.

Starting Dates.

Dates may be arranged to meet your schedule. The

program usually starts and ends on Sunday. The pro-gram operates all year round.

Countries.

Additional countries are added each year. It is always possible that a country that is of interest to you can be

arranged. Ask about it if the country is not listed.

Regions.

- When a description such as "Loire Valley" or "Tuscany" is used, it is understood that it means an area

of the country. The definition of the area is more or less

the same as the one used in a Tourist Guide. When the description is "Paris Region" or "Edinborough Region"

it means within an ap-proximate 25 mile ra-

dius of the city in ques-

tion (with the exception of London). If you are

interested in "London Region," please ask

about it.

- Please list choice of regions in the order that

they are of interest. You should list at least

two (2) choices within

the same country. - Other Regions: Since

new regions are being opened, an area you list

as "Other" might be

available. However, if you list "Other Region"

you absolutely must list a second and third choice. "PROGRAMS" has no obligation to look for a host in an

"Other" region. - Requesting Specific Regions:

- From mid-September to mid-May, you can re-

quest a specific region as long as the region is one offered (and not an "Other"). If the application is

received four (4) or more weeks in advance, every effort will be made to honor this request.

- From mid-May to mid-September, every effort

will be made to honor requests for specific regions (not an "Other"), but they cannot be guaranteed.

- It is almost impossible to guarantee a specific

Egypt

Page 9: Adults & Seniorssomething different?€¦ · "5-Star" Program. - While this option is open to all, from teenagers to senior citizens, the "5-Star" Program is primarily for businesspeople

small city or town in a region at any time of the

year. Allergies.

Please make sure you list all allergies. For example... In France, most homes have dogs and cats. In Spain,

eggs (fried eggs, tortillas) are an integral part of the

diet, even in upper income families. Those with severe pollen allergies should think twice about going to Costa

Rica. Even if you are in a home with non-smokers, in most countries you still will find cigarette and cigar

smoke in restaurants, public transportation, etc. If you do suffer from any allergy, make sure you go with the

proper medication.

No-Smoking.

This is not that difficult to accommodate. Host/s will not smoke inside the home, but cannot require that friends,

tradespeople, etc. visiting their home not smoke. Al-

though it is changing, outside the United States, the per-centage of people that smoke is much higher. You can-

not change that.

Special Diets.

- If you request a special diet, every effort will be made to arrange it for you.

- If you require a special diet for health reasons, you can, in most cases, be accommodated. There may pos-

sibly be an additional charge, depending upon the type

of diet requested and the additional cost to the host or additional time required to prepare this for you.

- If you are a vegetarian, this is not a problem. You might go to the home of a host who is a vegetarian, or to

one who will not be upset if you only eat what you want

and not eat everything he/she prepares. You will be served larger quantities of what you can eat.

- If you request a special diet, and request to be in a home where everyone else follows the same diet (i.e.,

vegetarian) or that special meals be prepared for you,

you are limiting your options.

Private Bathroom. - In the United States, there is a much higher ratio of

bathrooms to bedrooms and other rooms in the home than there is anywhere else in the world. The entire

family (host family and participant) will not usually be

sharing the same bathroom, unless possibly if there are only one or two people in the home. It is not that easy

to find a home where one has one's own private bath-room.

- Do not judge the standard of living of a home in an-

other country by the number of bathrooms. Most homes in the United States and the rest of the Americas

are much more recently constructed than those in Europe. Many of the elegant homes in Europe are 100

to 200 years old and older. Putting in additional bath-

rooms requires making structural, and possibly archi-tectural, changes; or possibly installing a whole new

plumbing system. The host may not want to or be able

to do them. Zoning laws may not permit changes to be

made. Accept this as a cultural difference - before you

go. If you insist on a private bathroom, once again, you will be limiting your choice of host families.

- If you indicate "private bathroom preferred" and a private bathroom is available, you will not be charged

for it. However, if there is no private bathroom avail-

able, you must accept the placement without a private bathroom. If you indi-

cate “private bathroom essential,” every effort

will be made to find a

host home with a private bathroom. If you indi-

cate “private bathroom essential” you will be

charged additional for the private bathroom.

Private Bedroom. You will always have your own bedroom. If two people

come together, they most likely will share a room. If two people come together and want separate / individ-

ual rooms in the same home, you may be limiting your

options and the cost might be more than the “two peo-ple in a home” rate. More hosts have one bedroom

available than have two bedrooms available.

Interests of Hosts.

Every effort is made to try to match partici-

pants with hosts as to general interests. If

requests are made at

the last moment or if requests are highly

specialized, this is sometimes difficult to

fulfill.

Standard of Living.

- Standard Program. Hosts are upper middle income and upper income. Occasionally, even if the circum-

stances are more modest, middle income homes are used when it is believed that the host is especially

good.

- "5-Star" Program. Homes are usually very high in-come. In Europe, especially, emphasis is placed on

tradition. A "maison particuleir," without central air-conditioning, but with huge shutters to keep out the

sun, or an estate in England without central heating,

cold and drafty in winter, but with a fireplace in every room, is considered more prestigious and more deluxe

than a modern apartment with all the modern conven-iences.

June, July, August to Mid-September. These are the months of the year when there are the

highest number of participants. If you want to attend at

Hungary

Russia

Page 10: Adults & Seniorssomething different?€¦ · "5-Star" Program. - While this option is open to all, from teenagers to senior citizens, the "5-Star" Program is primarily for businesspeople

this time of year, please try to submit applications early.

Please be patient. Often, addresses will not come until

right before the homestay is to start. Your region will be confirmed in advance. This does not mean that no one

knows where you are going. It means that the name of the host will not be given out until it is almost definite

there will be no last minute change. If one person

changes his/her plans during a busy time of year, it can set off a chain reaction resulting in many changes.

Therefore, it is better not to release the name and ad-dress until, in all probability, there will be no last minute

changes.

Last Minute Changes in Host.

This usually does not occur, but because the program involves individuals and not large hotels, it is always

possible that this could happen. If this does, participants are expected to/must accept this

change. There is also the chance

that a change will be made at the last moment if a host more suited

to the participant's needs becomes available.

Ability to Adjust. - You will be living in the home of

someone you do not know, in a foreign country with cultural dif-

ferences. You will like some

things; you will not like others. You are there to appreciate what is

different, not to only look for the similarities. Things are not supposed to be like they are

at home; that is one of the reasons you are participating

in this program. - If you are apprehensive about the program, please

think twice about enrolling. Those who are apprehen-sive to begin with are invariably those who have the

hardest time adjusting.

Homesickness.

- Participants of all ages suffer from this. It takes many forms. Sometimes it happens at the very beginning;

sometimes it does not happen until the second or third

week. It rarely never happens. - Please make sure that younger students understand

that it will happen, it is OK to be homesick, and that it will pass.

Transfers / Airport

& Train Pick-up Service.

- Participants may make their way on their own to the host’s home from the airport or train station. They may

also request to be picked-up at the local airport or local train station. There is a charge for the service. In some

cases, the host will meet you halfway.

- If you want the Transfer Service, you must request it at least ten (10) days in advance. Further instructions will

be provided if you request the service.

Time of Arrival at the Home of Host.

If you are not requesting the Transfer Service, it is much

better if you discuss your arrival directly with the host. Otherwise, it has to go through the office in the United

States to the "R/LO" to the host. The probability of error is increased.

Homestay / Cultural Immersion for the Younger Student (12 to 18 Years)

- As previously stated, the "LFL" Program is an excellent learning experience. It is for those who are very inter-

ested in participating in the culture of another country.

- Please make sure that the child wants to participate. If a child is sent against his/

her will, no matter how good or friendly the host,

absolutely nothing the host can do will make the

child happy.

- The less telephone and e-mail contact children

have with parents and friends, the better. Chil-

dren will adjust more quickly to their “new life.” How-

ever, if there are problems, we do want to hear about them.

- There may be an additional charge for students under 18. It will depend on the level of supervision requested

by the parent/s.

Refund Policy.

Please Read Terms & Conditions on the back of the Ap-plication Form. It will be revised. FLSS to read FLSAS.

Important Cultural Difference / Avoid Possible Misunderstandings with your Host/s.

In the United States, if you owe someone money for any-thing, and they say “Forget about it!” or “Don’t worry

about it!,” it is assumed that your friend or host does not

want you to or expect you to pay for something. That is not the case in Europe. If someone in Europe says” For-

get about it!” or “Don’t worry about it!,” they expect payment, but do not want to be paid at that moment.

This is a personal observation. Make sure you do pay for

whatever you are told not to worry about or to forget about.

The preceding should answer most of your

questions... If you have any others, do not hesi-

tate to call or e-mail to ask them.

We look forward to having you participate in the

Live the Foreign Life Program.

Comments - 2016Comments - 2016Most countries are always available. Some countries and some regionsare subject to availability.

In some countries there may be an additional charge for: private bathrooms Christmas / New Year’s dates (usually only one charge even if you

are there for both holidays) other holidays or special event days/weeks unaccompanied minors - depending on the level of supervision

requested by parents special diets

The two (2) people in a home cost usually means two people sharing oneroom. Two people requesting separate rooms in the same home bothmay be charged the one person rate.

Every country has its idiosyncrasies. You will be told about thecharges if they apply in your situation.

The Live the Foreign Life / 100% Cultural ImmersionProgram offers the participant the opportunity to experi-ence another country first hand and to learn about regionaldifferences and customs. It is not a language study program and itis not for those who only want a personal tour guide. It is for thosewho appreciate the differences of another culture, not for thosewho are looking for things to be the same as they are at home. The choice of an appropriate host is to be considered just as importantas placing participant in a specific city or region and “LFL” reserves theright to place participants in another region if there is no compatible hostin the region selected. If the location is most important, this must be stat-ed when application is submitted. Every effort will be made to accom-modate special requests. During certain months (usually summer), it ismore difficult to honor special requests. Absolutely, no changes in loca-tion will be made after arrival at the host/destination because of changeof preference for another city/region.Once with the host, if there are any problems, the participant should con-tact the "R/LO" at once. Where and whom to contact (“R/LO”) willdepend upon where (city/region/country) one is staying. That informa-tion appears on the page giving the name, address and information onthe host.. The “R/LO” must be given the opportunity to try to solve theproblem. Problems involving refunds must be stated in writing beforedeparture from the host’s home. Both "R/LO" and participant must signrequest for refund. Neither “PROGRAMS” nor “LFL” nor “LH/FLSAS” willbe responsible for resolving any refund problem that is not stated in writ-ing to the "R/LO" before the departure from the host’s home. Neither“PROGRAMS” nor “LFL” nor “LH/FLSAS” nor “R/LO” will be responsiblefor resolving any refund problem or giving any refund for any activity thatis arranged between host and participant. Participants will never knowingly be placed in any area where there isany danger or risk to participant, other than the dangers or risks encoun-tered in normal everyday life in the particular area. However, the worldsituation changes very rapidly; and there is no guarantee that what issafe today, will be safe tomorrow. Therefore, before submitting theDeposit, please make sure that you definitely want to participate.Absolutely no refunds will be given because of terrorism (before or dur-ing the program), either in the city, region or country where you will beliving or anywhere else in the world, or any other similar circumstances. If you have any doubts about traveling in general or to your specific areain particular; please wait to send in the application.PAYMENTS:! DEPOSIT ($300.00). Must be submitted, with any Late RegistrationFees (if applicable), with Application Form.!! FINAL PAYMENT.

- Due four (4) weeks before departure. If payment is not received four(4) weeks before departure, participant may be dropped from pro-gram or incur a Late Payment Fee. If you will be paying late for anyreason, let "LFL" know in advance.- Payments made less than four (4) weeks before departure must bemade by Cashier's Check, Wire Transfer, Travelers Checks, CreditCard or similar.- Payment must be made in full before program begins. For stays ofmore than twelve (12) weeks, you may pay for the first twelve (12)weeks, and pay for the remaining weeks six (6) weeks before the firsttwelve (12) weeks are over.- Under no circumstances will payments be accepted upon arrival atthe home of the host.

REFUND POLICIES:Making sure that your Homestay / Cultural Immersion is what you wantit to be, requires a good deal of planning. For each participant whoattends, a number of people are involved in the process. It is not as sim-ple as it may appear. Hosts (and their families in many instances) makecommitments, take vacations, etc. based on the fact that they will havesomeone in their home. Cancellations affect many people. The moreadvance notice you give, the better it will be for you and for all con-cerned. The following Refund Policies apply (no exceptions) to partici-pants of all ages.! $300.00 DEPOSIT:

- The Deposit ($300.00) is Non-Refundable, with two exceptions.1) If arrangements cannot be made for the participant on the dateshe/she is able to attend. However, if arrangements can be madefor the dates requested and the participant changes the dates andarrangements cannot be made for the new dates, there will be norefund of Deposit.2) If it is believed that the participant is not choosing the correctprogram for what he/she wants to accomplish.

- If Notification of Cancellation is received four (4) weeks or morebefore the program begins, the Deposit will be credited to the futureparticipation in the “LFL” Program. If Notification of Cancellation isgiven less than four (4) weeks in advance of starting date, the Depositwill be forfeited.

! CANCELLATION OF PROGRAM " BEFORE THE PROGRAM BEGINS.

- Except for any Special Arrangements / Special Requests (seebelow), the following are the Maximum Penalties for Cancellation.(see "POSTPONEMENTS") Extenuating Circumstances for addi-tional refunds will be the decision of the “PROGRAM” not “LFL” nor“LH/FLSAS.”- Notice received more than 35 days before "LFL" Program begins:100% of Final Payment less Deposit will be refunded.- Notice received between 35 days and 28 days before "LFL"Program begins; the cost for one week will not be refunded.- Notice received between 28 days and 21 days before "LFL"

Program begins; the cost of 2 weeks will not be refunded.- Notice received between 21 days and 14 days before "LFL"Program begins; the cost of 3 weeks will not be refunded.- Notice received between 14 days and 10 days before "LFL"Program begins; the cost of 4 weeks will not be refunded.- If notice is received 10 days or less before "LFL" Program begins, the Cancellation Penalty will be at least the cost of the program for5 weeks + the Deposit will not be refunded. If the program is short-er, the entire amount will be forfeited.- If special/difficult requests (i.e.; diet, professional interests, region, city, etc.) were involved or if any Special Arrangements(i.e.; airfare, hotel, etc.) have been made, and any monies havebeen expended, penalties for cancellation of these will be apartfrom and in addition to the penalties for cancellation of the “LFL”program.

" AFTER THE PROGRAM BEGINS:- No refunds will be made for stays of four (4) weeks or less, exceptfor possibly for certifiable medical reasons. Amount to be refund-ed in such a situation will be entirely the decision of “PRO-GRAMS,” and not that of “LFL” or “LH/FLSAS” and will take intoaccount arrangements that have been made.- Refunds for programs of four (4) weeks or longer will be givenonly if Notification of Cancellation is received in writing by “PRO-GRAM” twenty-one (21) days or more before the beginning of theweek (usually a Sunday) you want to cancel the “LFL” program.- All cancellations after the first four (4) weeks will be subject to aCancellation Penalty of at least 20%. Exact amount will depend onthe country and circumstances.- You are advised to purchase Trip Cancellation Insurance.

! POSTPONEMENT OF PROGRAM.If you Postpone your stay, and do not Cancel it, and do not request aRefund, the Penalties will be considerably less. The only exceptionmight be if the Postponement is made less than ten (10) days beforethe program is to begin. The decision in the case of postponementless than ten (10) days in advance will be that of “PROGRAMS” andnot that of “LFL” nor “LH/FLSAS.” If, at a later date, you Cancel andrequest a Refund, the Postponement will be considered aCancellation and refunds will be made as if the date of notification ofPostponement was the date of notification of the Cancellation.

CHANGE OF PLANS FEE: If you change your plans - dates, region, diet, program, etc. - there may be a Change of Plans Fee. The fee for2013 is $195.00 for any change of plans made less than 35 days beforethe program begins. This refers to change of country, region, arrivaldate, etc. It does not refer to flight arrivals and departures. Although thechange may appear to be simple, changes can involve many people. Ifyou are charged a Change of Plans Fee, it must be paid before the pro-gram begins. Under no circumstances can a participant start his/her pro-gram if the Change of Plans Fee has not been paid. If you pay by CreditCard, the Fee will be charged to your Credit Card.LATE ARRIVALS:

- If you arrive later (hours or days) than expected, for whatever rea-son, you will not receive any refund for any activities, lodging, meals, etc. that have been missed.- If you have given advance notification of the Late Arrival, everyattempt will be made to readjust the schedule to recuperate activities. In the event this is not possible, there will be no refunds for what can-not be recuperated.- If you do not notify anyone about the Late Arrival, even if the changewas due to circumstances beyond your control, “LFL" or “LH/FLSAS”or “PROGRAMS” does not have any obligation to recuperate lostactivities.

INSURANCE: Insurance against cancellation, accident, illness or lossof property is the sole responsibility of the participant. Neither "PRO-GRAMS” nor “LFL” nor "LH/FLSAS" will accept liability for changes orinconveniences due to strikes, inclement weather, “force majeure," ter-rorism or any other circumstances beyond its/their control. PersonalInsurance, Liability Insurance, Medical Insurance and Trip CancellationInsurance are strongly recommended to avoid loss of money in caseanything unexpected occurs.ILLNESS, ETC. OF HOST: In the event that, once the participant is atthe host's home and for whatever personal reason (illness, obligations, etc.), the host is not able to complete the homestay, it is the responsibil-ity of "PROGRAMS" to find another host. Any expenses incurred will bepaid by “PROGRAMS." If hotel or similar arrangements are required, the"R/LO" will make the arrangements. If transportation is required, the"R/LO" will make the arrangements. If participant makes his/her ownhotel or travel arrangements, he/she will not be reimbursed unless"R/LO" has given written instructions to do so. If it is not possible to findanother host, the participant will be refunded the unused portion of theprogram with no penalties. Neither "PROGRAMS” nor “LFL” nor“LH/FLSAS” will be responsible for expenses past the Refund of theunused portion of the homestay. All concerned will try to find an alter-native choice that is acceptable to the participant, but neither "PRO-GRAMS" nor “LFL” nor “LH/FLSAS” will be responsible for expensessuch as airfare, hotels, etc. after the homestay if the participant refusesto accept the alternate arrangements or if no alternate arrangements canbe made. Once again, Trip Cancellation Insurance is strongly recom-mended.LIABILITY:- Neither "PROGRAMS" nor “LFL” nor “LH/FLSAS” will accept liability forany loss, theft or damage to possessions, or for any personal injury

incurred by participant, either in the home of the host or on anyactivities (personal, including participation in sports, or busi-ness) with the host, or with relatives, friends or contacts of the

host or on the trip from the United States or Canada or any other coun-try to the homestay, or on the return to the U.S. or Canada or any othercountry from the homestay. (See INSURANCE above.)- Neither the host, nor “PROGRAMS" nor “LFL” nor “LH/FLSAS” willaccept liability for any financial loss or damage to possessions, or for anypersonal injury incurred by participant, either on any activity suggestedby host or anyone related to “PROGRAMS” or “LFL” or “LH/FLSS”whether or not in the company of the host or anyone else.- Neither the host, nor “R/LO,” nor “PROGRAM,” nor “LFL,” nor“LH/FLSAS” can be held responsible if you make any purchases at aplace suggested by any one involved in “LFL,” and later, for whateverreason, you are not happy with the purchase. (See INSURANCE above.)HEALTH:

- It is understood that all participants be in reasonably good health;and that all health problems (physical and emotional) be under con-trol with proper medication. Any Special Diet needed must be statedbeforehand. Other than providing a Special Diet, hosts are not to beput in the position of having to care for any participant, other than nor-mal attention that would be given to a guest in one's home. If partic-ipant requests a Special Diet and, for whatever reason, it is not pre-pared properly, neither the host nor “R/LO” or “PROGRAM” nor “LFL”nor “LH/FLSAS” may be held responsable for the consequences. The host cannot take on the responsibilities of a dietician.- If participant always takes or occasionally takes prescription med-ication, he/she should take a supply for the entire period that he/shewill be away from home.
