DESCRIPTION: Participants will explore the key components of Listening and Spoken Language therapy including application of basic speech acoustics, auditory brain development, and strategies for building language and literacy. Parent coaching strategies for including listening and spoken language in meaningful everyday activities will be highlighted as treatment targets. Case studies will be presented for application of acquired knowledge. The focus of this three half-day intermediate level seminar is to broaden the listening and spoken language opportunities for children with hearing loss in Maine through professional education and potential mentorship. Participants will: È Identify audible acoustic features of speech, based on an unaided audiogram. È List and describe levels of auditory skill development. È List appropriate amplification options based upon type and degree of hearing loss. È Describe the relationships between early identification of hearing loss, audiological management, and typical child development milestones. È Describe the relationships between early identification of hearing loss and appropriate listening & spoken language intervention. È List and describe three techniques used to coach parents in facilitating listening and spoken language within daily routines. È Select treatment targets based upon a child’s hearing age and stage of auditory development. È Select treatment targets based upon a child’s stage of auditory development and typical sequences of development.

AVT is a certified auditory-verbal therapist in private practice in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Cara has over 10 years of experience serving children with significant hearing loss who use hearing aids and /or cochlear implants. In her private practice, Listening & Language Solutions, LLC. She also is a part-time lecturer in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Indiana University Purdue University-Fort Wayne. Carrie Chojnowski ,MS, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT has been working in the field of hearing loss since 2000 and was officially certified as Maine’s first Listening and Spoken Language Specialist/Certified Auditory-Verbal therapist in 2006. Currently, she works with families with children from birth-12 years of age and their parents and adults with cochlear implants. She is also on the Maine Newborn Hearing Screening board for the state of Maine, and facilitates Maine’s first adult cochlear implant club. Cathy Janelle, MS, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT has nearly 20 years’ experience as an SLP serving young children and families. She has been working at hear ME now since 2003. She currently works with children birth-age 7 and their families and adults with cochlear implants. Cathy is certified as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist/Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist through the Alexander Graham Bell Association and holds a Certificate in Auditory Learning for Young Children with Hearing Loss through distance education from University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.
