Shoreham Farmers MarketFINALIST for the Sixth Year “Best Farmers Market in Sussex”

Once again Shoreham Farmers market is a finalist as the best farmers’ market in Sussex in the Sussex Food and Drink Awards, alongside Steyning and Lewes. The final of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2011/12 will hosted at the American Express Community Stadium on Thursday 26 January 2012.

101 Is the New Number for Reporting Crime to the Police.101 provides residents with a memorable number to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response. Examples are:• Reporting a stolen car.• Damage or vandalism to property.• Suspicion of drug use or dealing.• Reporting minor traffic collisions.• Providing information about crime.

How does it work? When a resident phones 101, Police in the control room will answer the call and respond appropriately. If the incident is recognised as an emergency, the operator or police call handler will put them through to 999.

How much does it cost to call? Calls to the 101 non-emergency number will cost 15 pence for the entire call, no matter how long the call or what time of day it is. This applies to both landlines and mobile phones.

What does this mean? 101 will change how the public get in touch with the police. It will make the service more accessible and potentially reduce pressure on the 999 system.

Civic Centre Sold

Conservative controlled Adur District Council have, subject to planning permission, sold the Civic Centre site. The Council is now working up plans for a new Civic presence in Shoreham, the Pond Road area is the most likely area for this which is in the heart of Adur and close to the Community Centre, library, health centre and local shopping and eating/drinking facilities.

New FootbridgeConservative run West Sussex County Council has listened to the views of local Councilors, residents and the Shoreham Society amongst others, concerning the replacement footbridge over the River Adur at Shoreham. The new bridge will have glass sides, will be wide enough for pedestrians and cyclists and will still be able to open for navigation purposes. Subject to budget availability there will be some landscaping works particularly to the south side.

TourismAdur is continuing to grow its tourism sector, according to the latest survey from Tourism South East, covering 2010. In Adur, visitor spend had increased by 1.9% and employment had grown by 4%.

Christmas tree recyclingA free kerbside Christmas Tree collection will operate from 9th January 2012.

Please leave your tree in a safe and visible place for collection on your normal collection day for the crews to pick up.

Please ensure that the tree is completely stripped of decorations as these are sent to a composting facility for reprocessing and it cannot cope with angels or tinsel! For large trees it would be helpful if you could cut them into smaller pieces.

Bogus callers come in variousformsThe difficulty at the door is knowing whether or not they are genuine.

Crime prevention tips:

• Use the chain before you open the door, If you’re not sure who is at your door, don’t open it. Check the identity of the caller. If in doubt call the company but close the door first. Do not use any telephone numbers provided by the caller, as they may be bogus.

• Many utility service providers like gas, electricity and water, provide password schemes for customers, sign up to these. When unannounced callers claiming to be from these utility providers call at your door they should know the password if they are genuine.

• Don’t keep large quantities of cash at home, put it in the bank where it is safe.

• Keep doors locked and windows secure at all times.

• Ensure that if you do let somebody in to your home, that you close the door behind them - distraction burglars often work in teams, where one will distract you whilst others sneak in through the insecure door.

• If somebody asks for your help (ie needs to make a telephone call, lost a ball in your garden, needs a drink or pen and paper) refer them to a younger neighbour or assist them through a closed door or call a friend or neighbour to come and help.

• If you suspect a bogus caller contact the Police immediately.
