Advanced Ultrasonic Inspection AUT

• AUT = Automated Ultrasonic inspection• Mostly used during construction of long pipe lines• Uses Zonal discrimination• Most suitable for narrow gap welds• Often combined with TOFD

Zonal discrimination

• The weld will be divided onto several zones

• Each zone will be covered by a separate probe

• The fill passes (of narrow gap weld) need a tandem probe set up)

Zonal discrimination

• Special calibration blocks with a reflector representing each partof the weld are required

• A scanner with a big number of probes is used

• Using the calibration reflectors each probe is separately set up to coverand focus its specific zone

AUT basically uses 3 different techniques to come to the final signal presentation which is used for interpretation of the weld integrity

• Pulse echo UT, with zonal discrimination

• TOFD, added for verification and sizing advantages

• Mapping, the UT data from all channel is combined to form easy to interpret mapviews of the top of the weld

• Repeatability, good for monitoring

• No radiation involved

• Gives information about weld defectsoccurring in which weld pass.This info can be used to optimizethe welding process
