For many people, science fiction is stories about such character as Superman and Batman who do impossible things. Although these characters and the films and stories about them are fun, they give a wrong idea about what science fiction really is.

Science fiction is a kind of fiction in which the writers ask themselves questions such as “what would happen if we could take something that made us all very clever?” Or “what would happen if we met a clever creature from another planet?”

For some people, only one kind of science fiction is worth anything. This is science fiction in which the stories are scientifically possible. Another kind of science fiction is not about scientific progress, it is about the way people live and are governed.

The third kind of science fiction is often called fantasy. These stories often have magicians in them and beautiful heroes and heroines. One of the most famous of these is “The Sword in the Stone” which was later made into a Hollywood musical film called “Camelot”.

It is sometimes very difficult to decide whether a story should be called a work of science fiction or not. George Orwell, for example, wrote a fantasy about a place in which all the character were animals, Animal Farm. Because it is an impossible story, some people may call it science fiction. However, it was really a satire on the way human beings behave.

People who say that science fiction is nonsense or a waste of time are really showing how little they know about it. To those we say that science fiction is usually a very serious attempt to write about what life might be like in the future or in another world.A)Answer the following questions:

2- The French expression “haute couture” means “high fashion”. Nowadays “haute couture” means the very best of French fashion – the clothes that top designers make. These clothes are first made for beautiful models to wear at fashion shows where rich women come to look at them. After the show, the women decide which designs they are going to buy. When most children – and other people who should know better – think of pirates, they think of story-book characters. The most famous of these are Long John Silver in “Treasure Island” and Captain Hook in “Peter Pan”. These and other pirates sailed the seas in sailing ships. Their flag was a skull and crossbones. They robbed other ships and led exciting and adventurous lives. They lived over a hundred years ago and although they were bad men, they were not completely wicked. This is the romantic idea of pirates.

The truth is very different. Firstly, most pirates were not and are not like the story-book characters. They are not just men who robbed other ships: they were and are murderers of the worst kind. They killed and kill people for their money and goods.

Secondly, there are probably as many, if not even more, pirates on the seas today than there were a hundred or more years ago. Nowadays, however, they do not sail in sailing ships and they do not have swords. Modern pirates use fast motor boats. They have machine guns and other weapons which they use to kill the sailors and passengers on the ships they attack. Whereas pirates in history were usually caught and punished,

Page 7: Advanced Level -Exams With Model Answers دورة تعليم اللغة الانجليزية الجزء الرابع

Advanced Level Examinations with Model Answers

most modern pirates are never caught. They move too quickly and there are too many of them.

Piracy is so serious that American sailing magazines tell their reader to take weapons with them – the bigger, the better. They also advise having the most modern. So many people have had problems with pirates that they don’t talk about the fish they have caught or the excitement of sailing any more. They talk about machine guns and bullets, and their escapes from pirate attacks.

When we think of pirates, therefore, we should not have romantic ideas, we should remember that they are really some of the most dangerous wickedest men in the history of sea travel.

4-Read the passage and answer the questions:During the last fifty years, psychologists have made us believe that

differences between men and women are mainly due to the way we are brought up. According to this theory, women can be trained to do jobs that men traditionally do, and men can and should become more domesticated. They should be more communicative and emotional.

But two new books say that, according to recent scientific research, gender differences exist because men’s and women’s brains work completely differently and their biological differences mean that they can never think or behave in the same way.

Because the two sides of a woman’s brain are better connected, women are generally more talkative and more fluent than men. Women solve problems by talking about them, and in a crisis, they usually want to discuss the situation and their feelings, while men tend to interrupt and offer solutions, which isn’t what women want at all. Men themselves don’t like asking for advice or discussing their problems – they try to solve their problems themselves by thinking about them silently. This fundamental difference is one of the main causes of conflict in male – female relationships.

Although some jobs today are still dominated by one or the other sex, it is not because of sexual distinction, but basically because men and women are attracted to different jobs. It is logical that men are attracted to careers where spatial skills are vital, such as engineering, architecture, construction and flying. Also men are far more attracted than women to jobs which involve risk, such as the stock market or racing. On the other

hand, women’s superior verbal skills explain why interpreters and foreign language teachers are mainly women. They are attracted to professions that require verbal ability, e.g. writing, acting, journalism and counseling. They also excel in jobs that require good organizational skills.

vital. You are more likely to get what you want if you can ask in a direct open way. Even if you don’t get your way, you’ll feel stronger in yourself as a result. Consequently, increase your communication skills by writing down your views and desires. Say them to yourself in the mirror or record them on a cassette. By practice, you’ll feel less nervous when you really have to speak up. Learn to voice your feelings – no one else will do it for you.

In addition, the way we use our bodies conveys even more about our feeling than the things we say. Therefore, think how you use your body when talking: direct eye contact, upright posture, emphasizing gestures and a lively tone of your voice are signs of assertiveness. Eventually, observe others and think what your body is saying.
