Guiding Principles Common Sense

Common Courtesy Simple Respect Individual Dignity

“The Golden Rule”Treat others as you would want to be treated

Page 59: Advanced Referee Certification Clinic For Powerchair Football

Communicating with Athletes with Disabilities

Offer to shake hands when introduced In non-game situation, talk to athlete at eye level –

kneel or sit down Never “talk down” – communicate in age-appropriate

manner Speak directly to athlete – not to “buddy”, parent, or

aideIf they offer answers on behalf of the athlete, keep eye contact with athlete

Listen carefully and patiently to person with speech impairment.

Avoid speaking for him/herAsk questions that require short answers

Respect a wheelchair for what it is – an extension of the athlete’s body

Page 60: Advanced Referee Certification Clinic For Powerchair Football

Communicating with Athletes with Disabilities (contd)

Give verbal signals as well as visual, when needed

Not all players will be able to see youParticularly true with regards to carding

Don't touch guide dog or wheelchair unless asked to

Offer help if asked or need seems obvious, but don't insist

Recognize and applaud accomplishments – but don’t overly sensationalize

Don’t be afraid to joke with athletes – treat them like anyone else, as athletes

And most importantly…
