Day 1

Introductions

Training Objectives

Introduce yourself

Partnership between Computers 4 Kids / e-Learner and Cloudseed

We are the official Training Partner for Cloudseed

Branding: o Computers 4 Kids = primary school programme o e-Learner = high school and adult programme

The Champions have been selected from their schools – congratulate them all on this achievement.

Format of training – cascade type model where we are going to train you as the Champions from your schools and you will then go back and follow the exact same process with your educators. You will be given the same handouts to use at your schools. (Stress that there have been problems in the past with this type of training and that the Champions will need to ensure they go back to their respective schools and impart their knowledge that they would have gained from your training)

A reminder of what Mr Mandela said many years ago “you can be a learner at any age”.

Read over the programme for the following two days and explain the handouts in the bags:

o Pen o Programme o Ubuntu cd o Ubuntu instruction booklet o Lesson Booklet: “Getting to know your computer” o Plastic File with 13 e-Learner for Educators lessons printed in full

colour o ICDL brochure

Stress flexibility in the programme (we may go through some items quicker than others) and the opportunity to ask questions at any time etc.

Register completed!

The objective of the 2 day training session is: 1. to have an understanding of using Open Office so that you can go back

to your school and apply your knowledge and share your skills with your colleagues.

2. To integrate ICT tools into effective teaching and learning

Please inform the Champions that ‘Learning to use a computer must be compared to running a marathon and not running a sprint’, so this will be an ongoing process of training, learning and imparting knowledge.

Page 3: Advanced Training Programme Gauteng Online School Champions Programme … · Microsoft vs Open Source Ask how many Champions know the difference between Microsoft Office and Open

Microsoft vs Open Source

Ask how many Champions know the difference between Microsoft Office and Open Office.

Explain the new names they will get to hear about quite often: Writer (Word), Calc (Excel), Impress (Powerpoint)

Are they aware that their GOL lab has been converted to Open Office and Open Source?

Who has used Open Office before?

Most users have Microsoft experience.

Explain the differences: o Microsoft is proprietary software and ‘owned’ by Bill Gates. Therefore

there is a cost to buying these products whilst Open Source if free. o Open Source is not owned by any one person. Developers and Joe

Public have the ability to edit and add to the source code to make the product better.

o Gauteng Department of Education has gone the Open Source route as a cost saving measure, hence this training session. Very proactive and progressive decision.

o Did you know? Microsoft documents can be opened and saved in Open Office format but not visa versa. What are the advantages of this to the end Open Office user?

o In a company survey completed in the third quarter of 2009 in the USA, 48% of companies surveyed reported using an open source operating system

The Ubuntu CD is your pack can be used on a Windows computer and it will give you access to the Ubuntu interface and Open Office software (just like your GOL lab) without interfering with your Windows environment – an opportunity for you to practice your Open Office skills at home.

Instructions: o Insert the CD into your laptop or pc o Boot (restart) your computer. If your computer was ‘asleep’, you will

need to restart it. o Run the ‘demo’ version – this will keep your Windows operating

system intact. o When you remove the CD and restart your computer, your Windows

operating system will run. o Note: If the Ubuntu CD does not run when you restart your PC, you will

need to restart your pc and look at your screen for a comment like “Press F2 for setup” or similar. Press the relevant key when your pc is rebooting and ensure that your pc is booting off the CD as the first boot option, then hard drive etc. Change if necessary. This will ensure your pc boots off the CD drive when started.

Discussion

Any questions?

Menu Items and Navigation and the GOL Wiki

Navigating around the Ubuntu Operating System is easy. Please follow me on your computers. The menubar is found at the top left of your screen and is where you to access applications, find files and customize settings. It is made up of three main menus:

1. Applications. Here you start applications and find new ones. 2. Places. Here you can find files and folders on your computer. 3. System. Allows you to customise Ubuntu’s settings and find help.

When you click on Applications, there are a number of menu items available to you. The most important menu items that you will make use of include: Education Games Internet Office Under Education, you will find the Learnthings, TuxMath, TuxPaint and TuxTyping programmes. Suggestions for primary schools: Tux Math, Tux Paint, Tux Typing Suggestions for high schools: Learnthings, Tux Typing Under Games, you will find Solitaire, Chess, gbrainy and a number of other games Suggestions for primary schools: all Suggestions for high schools: all Under Internet, you will find access to your email client (kMail) , and access to the Firefox browser (for accessing the internet). Under Office, you will find all the Open Office applications (database, presentation, spreadsheet and a word processor). Note: These are named Word Processing etc as a new user mighty not know what “Writer” means! To access an Open Office application for example, you click on the Menubar, Office and then the Open Office application you want to use. (demo this and get the Champions to do the same).

Closing the application or window is different to a Windows environment. How is it different? To get to the e-Learner for Educators interface, you click on the Menubar, Education and then e-Learner for Educators.

We are now going to get some hands-on experience by completing a fun activity. Locate the e-Learner for Educators shortcut as follows: Click on the Orientation Course icon: Then click on lesson O1, “Getting to Know the Computer”

Activity: Getting to know the Computer

The page that opens looks like this:

Page 8: Advanced Training Programme Gauteng Online School Champions Programme … · Microsoft vs Open Source Ask how many Champions know the difference between Microsoft Office and Open

Note: to zoom in or out of the page, hold down control and press the + or - key Note: We will go through the various shortcuts and menu items after we have completed the lesson. Open the template by clicking on the Template Linx shortcut: We are now going to put the computer together. Follow my instructions. Read through the instructions from page 4-6 from the Orientation 1, ‘Getting to know the Computer ‘ lesson and get the Champions to complete the activity one step at a time. Stress how easy the lesson is if the instructions are followed correctly. Allow the Champions to add their names. Ensure they use a different font, size and colour to their names. Stress the importance of how easy the lesson was to complete if one followed the step by step instructions. Do the Champions know colleagues back at their schools who would benefit by using this easy lesson as a starting point to learning to use a computer? Lets now go through the lesson book/instruction in more detail: Take out the booklet labeled Orientation 1 Getting to know the Computer. This is a spare copy and you may write on this copy and make notes etc Explain the content of the book: Cover: Shows you an example of what the finished work could look like. Structure of the Lesson page:

Prior learning requirements: the user must have prior knowledge about the concept/topic being covered as well as certain ICT skills to ensure the success of the lesson.

Tech Talk. An excellent way to learn new ICT terminology (and also a pre-requisite for Unit 1 of the certification.)

Integrated Activity. The actual lesson that will be completed as part of this booklet (writing a report, creating a marksheet etc).

Resources used. For your information.

e-Learner Skills. Tells you which ICT skills will be covered as far as the e-Learner certification is concerned.

Assessment pages: The next 2 pages cover the skills that will be covered as part of the assessment. This is for your information only (you can copy this if you want and tick off the skills). They are also available electronically under Teacher Resources.

e-Learner for Educators LMS

There are 3 ‘courses’ or options the Educators at school can choose from.

Lesson instruction: These are the most important pages as they tell you how to complete the lesson from start to finish, step by step – just as you have recently done. There are screen shots that will tell you what should be on the screen at any one time. If you read ALL the instructions in the correct order, you will complete the lesson correctly. There is a final screenshot of the completed work on the last page of the instructions. Note: your completed work does not have to look like the sample screenshot – this is just to give you an idea of what it could look like. You have a file with the 13 Essential lessons in it. This file is for you to use back at your school with your colleagues. Please look after it and ensure the books do not get lost! (Reminder: all booklets are available electronically on the interface)

Now that we have completed the lesson, lets have a look at the interface in more detail: Go back to the e-Learner for Educators interface. How do we get there? Before we start, please locate the Live Help icon on the right hand side of the screen - this icon is very important as it gives you immediate online help when you get stuck or you need advice. Just click on the link, type your question in the text box and we will get back to you within 10 minutes with a reply to your content/educational query. If the image says “Offline” in red, you can still send a request – we will reply to you via email. Please use the Cloudseed ESS portal for technical queries.

Page 10: Advanced Training Programme Gauteng Online School Champions Programme … · Microsoft vs Open Source Ask how many Champions know the difference between Microsoft Office and Open

1. Orientation. For beginners or educators who have not worked on a pc before. I am sure you ALL know staff at your schools who could benefit by going through these lessons. It is not compulsory to do these lessons.

2. Essential. For all Educators and compulsory to get certification. 3. Supplementary. For those Educators who would like to consolidate

their skills after completing the Essential course. Not compulsory for certification.

Click on the Orientation link again and then the Orientation 1 lesson as you did previously. We are now going to have a look at all the links and navigation items on the interface The menu bar remains static across all lessons in the e-Learner for Educators programme:

Search (local search engines available in the official languages)

Encyclopedia (available in the official languages)

Dictionary (online dictionaries as well as the e-Learner dictionary)

Activities o Keyboard/mouse activities. Used for real beginners – educators

who have not used a pc before. There are a number of exciting mouse skills to choose from. Click on the red house (bottom right) to return to the menu options. Note: All images are Gauteng orientated!

o Touch typing. Choose lesson 1 to experiment. Also allow Champions to add their own text (copy and paste spelling words etc?) and practice that text. Stress importance of typing and how effective typing will result in quicker promotion in the work place!

o Collaboration. We have included some exciting collaborative websites for use at school. Twiddla is excellent and allows you to share your screen with colleagues locally and internationally. You just need to get the unique code to the other school/user. Learners can add content/collaborate with other learners.

Links (Gauteng Online, Gauteng Online Wiki, Cloudseed, GDE, e-Learner, Computers 4 Kids and Thutong amongst others)

Teacher (Resources, planning, assessments). Demo this link extensively: o Assessments and Feedback: Writer version of the assessment

pages taken from the booklets o Planning: The Overview/Structure of the lesson in pdf format for

planning purposes o Classroom: Various posters you can print for your classroom, as

well as worksheets and ‘power-off’ lessons when the power goes off (remember to print these before the power goes off!)

o Reference: Reference documents for software packages o Typing: Additional typing tutors you can install o Software. Links to great software packages we make use of o Overview. A pdf of all the lessons that form part of this

certification.

Help (contact information and access to the Navigation page with shortcuts to the ESS portal and GOL wiki etc)

The six hyperlinks with images on the left hand side of the screen are also constant across all lessons and include:

Template Linx (if the lesson requires a template it will be listed here. If there is no template it means that the Champion will start )

Pix Linx (if you require images, they will be supplied here)

Resource Linx (the lesson booklet in PDF format is available here and you also have a set of printed manuals. Please note that only the Essential booklets have been printed although ALL the booklets are available in digital format on the interface. There is also a QR code link which links to our website with additional resources). A QR code (Quick Response) allows you to link the code to a web page, phone number or text message amongst others. The QR link on these pages directs the users to our website where they can access additional resources.

Tech Talk Linx (Technical Vocabulary, what does www stand for, html etc) www.computers4kids.co.za and www.classesonline.mobi We want to show you the Computers 4 Kids learner resources very briefly. They are all aligned to the National Curriculum and approved by GDE. Go to www.computers4kids.co.za and click on the ‘tour’ link

Page 12: Advanced Training Programme Gauteng Online School Champions Programme … · Microsoft vs Open Source Ask how many Champions know the difference between Microsoft Office and Open

Open Office

Click on the Primary or High school resources There are 8 volumes (R-7) in the primary school set and 3 volumes (8-10) in the high school set. There are a number of lessons that you can access (labelled ‘try this lesson now’). You can use these lessons with your learners back at school. The other website is www.classesonline.mobi. Here you can register for the full schools (learners) version for a 7 day free trial and you can access the e-Learner for Educators resources permanently at home or at any school with internet access. The password and username for the e-Learner for Educators resources is ‘smmtgol’. Please click on the “Existing User” link if you want to access these resources.

Explain that the Champions will now go over 3 Open Office applications, namely Writer, Calc and Impress (ask the Champions what type if applications these are). Exercise 1: you will drive this lesson by reading out the instructions and the Champions will follow. This is not the ideal way to train as you may have experienced Champions sitting with inexperienced learners but this gives a good indication of what the Champions can expect back at school. Exercise 2 and 3: The Champions will complete the lessons themselves by reading the instructions to themselves. You, as Facilitator, will help those Champions that require help, on a needs basis.

Exercise 1 – Facilitator driven E10 Creating Worksheets - Maths (Uses Writer; Insert table; Add text; Format text; Insert picture; Use and format basic drawing shapes).

Exercise 2 – Champion driven E5 My Class List - (Uses Calc; basic data entry and sorting function; inserting image)

Exercise 3 – Champion driven E6 Governing Body Elections (Impress; Inserting images; Inserting and formatting Text; Inserting Fontwork; Basic animation and slide transition).

Day 2

ICT Integration : hands-on tools

The importance of integrating ICT’s into classroom teaching and learning cannot be over stressed.

The old fashioned way of engaging ICT as a separate entiy is gone!

Every time an educator uses the lab for any reason, there should be an ICT element to the lesson and content element. This is true integration of ICT’s When deciding on a lesson to create or use in the IT lab, the educator should take cognisance of the fact that we are preparing our learners to be effective digital citizens in the 21st century.

All ICT lessons should include:

Entrepreneurial , financial and business literacy

Creativity and innovation

Critical thinking

Communication Skills

ICT Skills

Productivity Skills

Leadership Skills

Note: We are going to cover a number of ICT tools, products and software products that will enhance ICT integration in your labs.

Collaboration

ICT Tools Note: Explain each briefly and how we can integrate into effective learning and teaching.

What is a Cloud Computing? Cloud computing means that instead of all the computer hardware and software you're using sitting on your desktop, or somewhere inside your company's network, it's provided for you as a service by another company and accessed over the Internet, usually in a completely seamless way. Exactly where the hardware and software is located and how it all works doesn't matter to you, the user—it's just somewhere up in the nebulous "cloud" that the Internet represents. Cloud Computing is the ability to use the power of other computers (located somewhere else) and their software, via the Internet (or sometimes other networks), without the need to own them. They are being provided to you, as a service. http://www.cloudtweaks.com/2011/02/how-can-cloud-computing-help-in-education/
