DESCRIPTION

This is the talk I gave at the UKTI Seminar on Advanced User Interfaces at Mobile World Congress 2014. The Invention of the typewriter in the 1800s was a revolutionary one, and it proceeded to disrupt many industries. The invention of the QWERTY layout was a key enabling factor in the success of the typewriter, but we are still cramming it onto our touch screen devices 150 years later. The 5-TILES keyboard is a complete re-invention of the keyboard layout for touch screens - taking up 70% less of the screen, with keys large enough for your fingers. But most excitingly, the 5-TILES keyboard fits on smart watches, making it the first feasible input mechanism for wearable tech. Smart Watches are certainly an interesting Invention, but they are not yet causing a Revolution (we are all still in search of the killer app), and they are also not Disruptive (too expensive, and not meeting the minimum needs of an over-served market). A great example of Disruption is when the Automobile (a revolutionary invention) started to be mass-produced and finally affordable for a larger number of people. The invention of the Mobile Phone has followed a similar path, with a fresh Revolution kicked off by the Smart Phone. Disruption in a wide range of industries started with the SMS and Mobile Web, and now include Touchscreen applications as well. The industry analysts are all predicting a Smart Watch revolution, if one goes by the numbers, but we are now starting to enter the "disappointment" stage of the Hype Cycle. They have simply yet to deliver the killer application. Although the 5-TILES Keyboard is arguably an incremental innovation, it will be a key enabler of disruption by Smart Watches, because introducing an input mechanism blows up open a huge range of possibilities for applications. Smart Watches are still dumb, but with 5-TILES, they'll be getting much smarter very quickly.

The  5-‐TILES  Keyboard  is  a  complete  reinven-on  of  the  keyboard  for  touch  screen  devices

5-‐TILES  is  based  on  5  keys  that  take  up  70%  less  space  on  the  screen,  and  are  comfortably  finger-‐sized

With  a  viable  input  mechanism,  smart  watches  are  no  longer  just  ‘dumb’  alert  receiving  gadgets

We  are  currently  working  on  prototypes  based  on  Plas-c  Logic  interfaces,  the  Kindle  and  Google  Glass
