University Advancement Focus Areas
• Create and support a university-wide culture that is committed to strategic, integrated and coordinated advancement.
• Purposefully engage students, alumni and key audiences along a continuum of involvement to deepen their personal connections to the university.
• Develop a unified core infrastructure, including data, systems, and relationship management, to better serve students, alumni, and key audiences.
• Focus communications and marketing efforts to deliver strategic, consistent, and powerful messages.
Goal: More strategic and meaningful engagement
Advancement in Action
• Steps:– Determine priority travel areas from alumni and
development data – Set measurements of success– Develop collaborative marketing/messaging– Plan & execute events/visits– Conduct follow-up and de-brief
Planned trip to Texas• Houston, San Antonio, Austin
• Objective: to maximize exposure of Archie for the University to connect with key audiences
• Individual Development appointments• Club events• Planned giving event• Development reception• Donor dinner co-hosted by
Trustee, Gil Cloyd
Why did it work?• Stopped working in silos and started working
together• Recruited the right team• Researched alumni data and choose strategic
locations to travel• Gathered data in a central location
Lessons Learned• It is really fun to represent One University!• A one-two punch -
We get the biggest impact by using Archie and President Gee at different times of the year
Lessons Learned
• Different events appeal to different audiences• Centrally managed registration is
advantageous; better to know who is coming• Key University messages are needed & should
be delivered consistently• Consider expanding this approach at the unit
level
Welcome to the New Reality
• Cannot solve today’s problems with the systems that created them. Think Differently
• Be creative with partnerships• Find ways to work with your advancement peers• Create a Win/win • Celebrate success
New Advancement Team dress code
A thousand Flowers bloom
• Spin off successes– Follow-up trip with President Gee trip to Houston &
Dallas– New donors identified– Minority Affairs and OSUAA partnership on minority
alumni reception– Undergraduate Admissions event – Thinking broadly about staffing events
Don’t be unprepared, look up, and around for opportunities to create
an advancement success story.
Now that you get it, go do it!And then take a bow!
