358 THE LIBRARY QUARTERLY

intaglio plate processes, (c) relief block processes, (d) planographic (lithographic) processes, (e) photomechanical processes, and (f) periodicals consulted. Only selected entries are annotated, but each section and subsection is prefaced with an introductory overview. This volume will be of special interest to print curators, printing historians, bibliographers, and librarians, in addition to collec- tors (though it is designed as a guide for scholars and "no mention of special- paper issues or other 'points' that the collector might seek" are included [p. 10]). Two indexes, one of processes, patent names, equipment, and materials, and the other of authors, contributors, editors, and translators, conclude this well-made bibliography.-Richard W. Clement, University of Chicago

Advances in Librarianship. Edited by WESLEY SIMONTON. VOI. 13 (1984). Orlando, Fla.: Academic Press, 1984. Pp. xviii + 264. ISBN 0-12-024613-9.

This is the most recent entry in a consistently useful annual series of volumes comprising state-of-the-art essays supported with substantial bibliographies. Subjects handled include: "Management Information for Library Decision Mak- ing" by Charles McClure (University of Oklahoma); "Subject Access in the On- Line Environment" by Nancy J. Williamson (University of Toronto); "Commu- nity Information Services" by Joan C. Durrance (University of Michigan); "IFLA and the Recent Growth of Organized International Librarianship" by Robert Vosper (UCLA); "Information Systems and Library Automation in Latin America" by Marietta Daniel Shepard; collection development and management by Marcia Pankake (University of Minnesota); collection evaluation by Paul H. Mosher; and literature identification in science by C. D. Hurt. Anyone seriously interested in these topics will find the essays helpful and the bibliographies invaluable.-Mary Biggs, University of Chicago

The Power of Little Words: Some Ideas to Improve Your Writing. By JOHN L. BECKLEY. Fairfield, N.J.: Economics Press, 1984. Pp. 128. $14.95. ISBN 0-910187-02-9.

"This is not a book for scholars. . . . Neither is it a book for would-be dramatists, novelists or poets.... My idea is simply to compile a practical book for anyone who wishes to express his or her ideas more clearly, and with greater interest to the reader" (p. 5). In these three topic sentences from the first page of the text, John L. Beckley, proprietor of the Economics Press, explains the purpose of this thin volume. In 16 chapters he provides illustrations of the value of simplicity, clarity, brevity, and repetition. It is a useful manual for librarians and others who write business letters and administrative reports.-Howard W. Winger, University of Chicago
