Capital Costs

• Civil Work • Hoppers • Feeders • Conveyors • Train Sets • Dumping Equipment

Maintenance

• One dumping system to maintain, rather than an entire train line

• No door seals to replace • No railcar gate failures • No railcar linkages • No hot shoe maintenance

Climate

• Materials do not need to be free-flowing (wood chips, coke, coal, lignite, iron ore)

• Clumped or frozen materials are easily discharged

• Greater opportunity for coal load to freeze if a haul is more than one day away from the receiving station

• Demurrage charges

Versatility

• Greater opportunity to receive coal if both types of railcars (standard and bottom dump) are handled

• Receiving pit can include hammermill • Platen can include various devices to aid safe car handling:

– Integral weigh scale allows railcars to be weighed before and after dumping

– Integral retarder to stop or hold cars on platen – Integral ejector to remove empty cars and facilitate

throughput – Integral rerailer to eliminate truck-associated tracking

Versatility • Bottom Dump Rotary Hybrid

– Best of both worlds – Combines rotary railcar

dumper with bottom dump capability

Economics

• According to Bulk Solids Handling:

Unloading rates less than 15,000 tons per hour are more suited to rotary dumping, while rates greater than 15,000 tons per hour may be more suited to rapid discharge hopper cars.

Economics

Bottom Dump Railcar • ARI Superflow Coal Car • Load limit:

– 235,000 pounds

Rotary Dump Railcar • ARI RotoFlow Coal Car • Load limit:

– 243,100 pounds

Economics

• Difference: – 8,100 lbs per car – Rotary dump unloads an additional 891,000 lbs of coal per

110-car train. – 1 train every other day (180 days/year) x 891,000 lbs.

= 160,380,000 lbs per year

Summary

• Capital investment dependent on many variables • Only one system to maintain • Easily unloads materials that are non-free-flowing • Breakeven point at 15,000 tph • All other things being equal, the rotary dumping system

unloads an additional 891,000 lbs of coal per 110-car train when compared to a similar bottom dump system
