Technology for Forward Link
• Outbound or FL from Hub is based on DVB-S2 standard
• DVB-S2 Technical Module (TM) has been developing a more efficient use
of the satellite bandwidth
• DVB-S2 TM has developed together with the academia and equipment
manufacturers an extension to the DVB-S2 standard
• A major goal was to improve the throughput of the satellite transponder
• An extension to the DVB-S2 standard was approved and is generally called
DVB-S2X

DVB-S2X Enhancements
This standard provides improvement in the DVB-S2 standard • Reduces minimum roll-off from 20% to 5% (15% improvement)
• GSE encapsulation improves 8% efficiency over MPE
• Granularity increase – more MODCODs
- Provides finer resolution on MODCOD selection
• Introduces new modulation - 64APSK/128APSK/256APSK
- Yields up to 8 bits/symbol instead of 5. Provides 60% improvement in throughput alone
• Simplifies the use of wideband transponders by time slicing processing
These enhancements enables to increase the throughput on the FL of up to 83% comparing with
DVB-S2
• However, the power required to transmit these signals is increased by 3dB due to decrease of
roll-off factor from 0.2 to 0.05 and the required HPAs back-off to increase the modulation from
16/32APSK to 64APSK/128APSK/256APSK by 6dB/9db/12dB

Time Slicing Technique
• Spot beam transponders (up to 500 MHz) are virtually divided into “Time
Slices”
• This concept has been used for years in cellular networks
• Each “Time Slice” represents a portion of the total bandwidth of 500 MHz
• Wholesaler can subdivide the bandwidth for VNO and each ISP/User
demodulates only their “Time Slice” of a complete carrier
• Wholesaler can provide a portion of the total Carrier in Msps (MHz) or in
Mbps, based on the business model
• Can support many Service Providers and still use single carrier in
transponder yielding significant increase in throughput
