QuickStart
If you want to jump right in and use the ADVC-100, simply plug it in and followthese steps.
1. Push the Power
button on theback of the unit.
2. Connect the IEEE 1394
cable tothe unit. The larger 6-pin endgoes into the back of the box, and
the smaller 4-pin end goes intothe capture card.
If your computer’s IEEE 1394ports are of the 6-pin variety, youcan reverse the cable and plug 4-pin end into the 4-pin port on thefront of the unit and the 6-pinend into your computer.
3. If you are capturing video from ananalog camera, make sure the
ADVC-100 is set to Analog In
and that the camera is connected
to the unit’s S-Video or compositeports on the front of the unit.
If you are exporting video to ananalog camera, make sure the
ADVC-100 is set to Digital In
and that the camera is connectedto the unit’s S-Video or compositeports on the back of the unit.
4. You can now open your editingapplication and begin capturingvideo.
If you are capturing PAL video, you needchange the DIP switch settings. For moreinfo, see Setting DIP switches on page 8.

ADVC-100 Basics
The front of the ADVC-100 containsinputs for composite, S-Video and DV.The DV input is a 4-pin IEEE 1394(FireWire, i.Link) port and can do bothinput and output.
Power button
To turn on the ADVC-100, make surethe power cord is plugged into the backof the unit and into a working electrical
outlet. Then press the Power
button onthe back of the unit.
Auto (IMS) mode
The ADVC-100’s IMS (Intelligent ModeSelector) mode can automaticallydetermine whether you are importingdigital or analog video, In this mode, theunit automatically detects if there isanalog or DV input and switches to theappropriate mode.
To enable this mode, make sure DIPswitch 6 is in the ON position. For moreinformation on DIP switches, seeSettingDIP switches
on page 8.
Input Select button
The Input Select
button on the top ofthe unit lets you toggle betweenDigitalIn and Analog In
modes. A blue lightsignies which mode the ADVC-100 isusing. The Input Select button will not
work while the both status lights areblinking.
• Analog In — Indicates that the ADVC-100 is ready to receive analogvideo.

• Digital In — Indicates that the ADVC-100 is ready to receive digitalvideo.
Status light
The Status
light indicates separate thingsdepending on which mode you are using.
• Analog In — The status light blinks when a Macrovision-protected signalis detected.
• Digital In —
The status light blinks when the DV audio is set at 32kHz12bit, which is used for 4-channelDV audio. See4-channel mixingmode
on page 10 for moreinformation.
Connection Ports
The ADVC-100 has connection ports forboth S-Video and composite input, as
well as a 4-pin IEEE 1394 input/outputport.
The back of the unit has ports for bothS-Video and composite output, as well asa 6-pin IEEE 1394 input/output. There isalso an additional S-Video input and
Audio In, which uses a standard mini-jackinterface. For best results, you should usethe S-Video composite conversion tableincluded in the package.
Analog input connectors
A priority order is set to the Inputconnectors. If all analog input connectorsare used at the same time, the connectors
are used in the following order:

If you have two video sources that youuse regularly, you should connect the onethat is more frequently used to the back, and connect the other to the front only
when you are using it.
The unit detects if there is a cable attachedto the connector, regardless if there is asignal coming in or not.

• Video Format — toggles betweencapturing NTSC and PAL video. The ADVC-100 is set to captureNTSC video by default.
• NTSC Setup Level —
togglesbetween 0 IRE (Japan NTSC) and7.5 IRE (USA NTSC).
• Locked Audio Mode — togglesbetween capturing locked audio orunlocked audio. If you are capturinga lot of long clips, you should leavethis switch in the OFF position tomake sure the audio stays locked tothe video.
• Audio Mode — toggles between48kHz/16-bit 2-channel audio and32kHz/12-bit 4-channel audio. SeeSetting 4-channel mixing mode
onpage 10 for more information.
• Power-on Input Mode — togglesbetween Analog and Digital modes
when you rst turn on the unit. Ifyou primarily capture analog video, you should set this to the OFFposition so the unit is in Analog Inmode when you turn it on.
• Input Select Mode —
togglesbetween Manual and Auto (IMS)mode. In Auto (IMS) mode, the unitdetects whether there is analog orDV input. For example, if youconnect an analog camera to theunit, it automatically switches to
Analog In mode, and the Analog Instatus light illuminates.

Signal from 2 will be sent to 1 and analogoutput. Analog input will be ignored.
DV device 1 = play DV device 2= play
Signal will be irregular and output will beunstable. Stop one of the DV devices.
DV device 1 = stopDV device 2= stop
Analog signal will be sent to both DVdevices and also to analog output.
This function may not be supported withcertain DV devices.
