The Advent wreath is a common tradition full of symbolism. The circular branches with four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. This weekend we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent, a word that means “to come.” Advent is a time of waiting, watching and preparing for three events: the celebration of Christmas, Jesus’ second coming and his coming into our hearts each day. Most of us don’t like waiting. But some waiting is unavoidable, and all waiting is an opportunity to grow in grace. As we remain vigilant and wait for relief from the pandemic, we join Isaiah’s cry to God in today’s first reading saying, “Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down” (Isa 64:1). We also reflect on the Virgin Mary’s nine months of pregnancy, which were filled with joy and preparation. She rejoiced that Jesus already dwelt within her and, like any expectant mother, she spent these months preparing for his birth. Our Advent journey follows this same pattern. Through faith and baptism, God is already with us, so we rejoice. At the same time, we are invited to spend the weeks of Advent season watchful and alert, preparing for Jesus’ coming by setting aside our sins and uniting ourselves more closely to God in daily prayer. PREPARING FOR THE LITURGY • Light the first candle of your Advent wreath. • The liturgical color for Advent is violet; incorporate it into your home or prayer corner. • Prepare your Mass intentions. The Advent wreath is a common tradition full of symbolism. The circular branches with four candles represent the four

weeks of Advent. The three purple candles symbolize prayer and penance and are lit on the first, second, and fourth Sundays of

Advent. The rose candle symbolizes joy and is lit on the third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday.

Did You Know?

BE WATCHFUL! BE ALERT! BE JOYFUL!This weekend we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent, a word that means “to come.” Advent is a time of waiting, watching and preparing for three events: the celebration of Christmas, Jesus’ second coming and his coming into our hearts each day.

She rejoiced that Jesus already dwelt within her and, like any expectant

mother, she spent these months preparing for his birth. Our Advent journey follows this same pattern. Through faith and baptism, God is already with us, so we rejoice. At the

same time, we are invited to spend the weeks of Advent season watchful and alert, preparing for Jesus’ coming by setting aside our sins and uniting ourselves more

closely to God in daily prayer.

PREPARING FOR THE LITURGY• Light the first candle of your Advent wreath. • The liturgical color for Advent is violet; incorporate it into your home or prayer corner.• Prepare your Mass intentions. Who and what are your praying for today?• Include an image of Mary in your prayer space.• Download or print today’s scripture readings at usccb.org.

Stewards of God’s GiftsIn today’s second reading, St. Paul says that God

has enriched us in every way. As stewards of God’s gifts, how can we enrich others with the

gifts we have received?

FOR REFLECTION• What are two things you can do to be watchful and alert for the

presence of God in your life today?• When Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit, she traveled to

Judah to help her cousin, Elizabeth. Having received Jesus in Holy Communion (or a spiritual communion) who will you serve today?

• Reflect on a time when you experienced joy while you waited for something or someone.

• What are some of the spiritual gifts God has given you?• Jesus was born into a family and a community. In what

concrete ways can you stay united to your spiritual family and community?

OUR LOVING MOTHERThe blessed Virgin Mary, our mother, knew the joys and challenges of waiting. As we begin this holy season of Advent, may she accompany us as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ.
