LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

!THE COLLECT !Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the

Book of Isaiah chapter 11beginning at the 10th verse

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Righteousness shall be the girdle of his waist, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall feed; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

The sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.In that day the root of Jesse shall stand as an ensign to the peoples; him shall the nations seek, and his dwellings shall be glorious.

Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God. !PSALM 72: 1-8 Deus, judicium !1. Give the king your justice, O God * and your righteousness to the king's son; 2.That he may rule your people righteously * and the poor with justice; 3.That the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, * and the little hills bring righteousness. 4.He shall defend the needy among the people;* he shall rescue the poor and crush the oppressor. S.He shall live as long as the sun and moon endure, * from one generation to another. 6.He shall come down like rain upon the mown field, * like showers that water the earth. 7.In his time shall the righteous flourish;* there shall be abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more. 8.He shall rule from sea to sea, * and from the River to the ends of the earth. !

Glory to the Father, and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now* and shall be forever. Amen. !

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter of Paul to the Romans chapter 15 beginning at the 4th verse. !Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, "Therefore I will praise thee among the Gentiles, and sing to thy name"; and again it is said, "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people"; and again, "Praise the Lord, all Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him"; and further Isaiah says, "The root of Jesse shall come, he who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles hope." May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. !Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to

Matthew ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour. !

At that time came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sad'ducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit that befits repentance, and do not presume to say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord. !

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: !It was with a deep sense of sadness that the world learnt of the death of Nelson Mandela who rose to become President of South Africa, the very same state that had imprisoned him for twenty seven years.

!6

Page 7: Advent2a 2013

!We give thanks to almighty God for the life, work and witness of the tremendous courage of the late Mr. Mandela and pray that his family, country and indeed the world will find comfort and solace in the promised hope of eternal life. Rest eternal grant unto him Or Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in peace. !The Rev’d Father Frederick S. Thomas, Rector of the Church of Grace and St. Peter, Baltimore MD, (who interestingly enough celebrates his 40th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood today) makes the point that the readings at Mass during Advent urge us all to be prepared for end time - the second coming of the King of kings and Lord of lords. !When we consider the readings at Mass the intention is not to make us afraid or to be filled with terror and dread; but rather that we may be inundated with the holy hope of life eternal. !Jesus gives this hope throughout his life and ministry. He says to the Twelve

"You are those who have continued with me in my trials; and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Luke 22: 28-30 !

There is great hope in the words of Jesus and other biblical personalities. The Rt. Rev’d N. T Wright, the recently retired Bishop of Durham in a book which I have chosen for my Advent reflection entitled, “Surprised by Hope” says

!7

Page 8: Advent2a 2013

“Hope is about what lies ahead and is promised by a God who loves to bring hope to each one of us. ” !

Bishop Wright in addition says that “It is also about the kingdom of God breaking into our present-day realities and hope spilling out into the world today.” !In all that we say and do as a church, as clergy and in other helping professions is that imperative to bring hope even in the context of seemingly desolate economic situations. !In an oppressive social, legal and political framework, the late Nelson Mandela never gave up hope and inspired more than a generation of persons. !We pray for God’s grace as we in our nation face the various economic challenges and we also pray that those who live under tyrannical regimes may come to enjoy the rights and freedoms to which we have become accustomed. !Your friend and priest, !Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !!
