    ON THE COVER:

There are a lot of cemeter-ies across the worldwith men who did ex-actly that.

This has been the worstwinter I can remember indecades. If you were around in1977 and 1978 you would haveexperienced the absolute worstwinter. There were 30 foot snowbanks and the average temp was1 degree for the month of Janu-ary.

Here it is the beginning ofMarch and we have temps in theteens. We could have a very coldMarch and may have a coldApril if things keep going likethey are. The only things thatare good about this cold weatheris, it will kill a lot of unwantedinsects especially the little natsthat have created such a disasterto our deer herd.

Ice Fisherman have had arecord season lasting over 3months when they usually getabout 3 weeks. The weather inthe last few years has been aroller coaster of adventure. Thebiggest drought ever, the highestwater ever and now the coldestand snowiest winter ever. Toyou old folks who remember the30s especially 1936 it was thehottest on record except for aheat wave back in 1901 whenthousands of horses died alongwith many people in the city ofSt. Louis. It will all change

Canterbury Talesme should speak your mind andnot be scared of any conse-quences. Last time I looked FreeSpeech was in the Constitution.Part of the reason we createdASO is so outdoorsmen wouldhave a voice to express theiropinions. Known as Voice ofthe American Sportsman

Our freedoms are slowly beingtaken away and freedom ofspeech is the number one on thehit list. It all started with politi-cally correct words, now I un-derstand the FCC was going tomonitor newsrooms acrossAmerica to make sure the Gov-ernment and their agenda got afair shake. That is what they didin Nazi Germany and still do inRussia. Beware of big govern-ment they are not your friend. The worst thing you can hear isI am from the government andI am here to help you. We useto take care of ourselves whenthe republic was founded anddid for a long time. But now bigbrother is watching you. In 1900the only recognized agencies tomost people were the US Post-man and the Armed Forces andthat was it. Now there are over500 Federal agencies working inyour behalf.

Just a note to remind you thisis America not Russia. This is aspecial place and it is up to youand me to make sure it stays thatway. Freedom of Speech is avery precious right, protect it.

lately that are a prime example ofCC going bad. In two cases folkswere shot and killed by someoneunjustifiably. I hope in both casesthey put these individuals away fora long time.

We need our CC folks to act andcarry responsibly in Illinois. If youare aware of someone doing a badjob teaching CC classes notify theISRA at 815-635-3198. We needto be vigilant and make sure it isdone right.

I really enjoyed this past sportshow season. It is a time to see oldfriends and meet new ones. TheDeer & Turkey Expo inSpringfield last month was likehomecoming. I saw friends fromall over the state who I haveknown for years. Its sure great toget out to see what all is going onin the outdoor world at the wintersport shows. Being in the outdoorbusiness for over 30 years you getto meet a lot of folks.

From the Arthur Illinois area Ihave met a lot of great people. TheAmish who have lived there for along time are some of the hardestworking folks I know. What I likeso much about them is they areself-reliant, honest and display alot qualities of who we were a long

someday I just wish it would hurryup. I am not a big supporter of theglobal warming thing, it is just toocold.

Our concealed carry classes havebeen rolling along fairly well. Butyou need to beware and be sureyou have an instructor who is notonly qualified but does what he issupposed to do. There have been atleast 9 instructors who have short-ened the hours and signed off onpaper work that was not completedby the student. These people weredisqualified to instruct any moreclasses. The ISRA has been moni-toring these classes across the stateto make sure they are doing theirjob. It is very important that therules are followed and havinggood instructors is paramount.

The ISRA, especially goodfriend Richard Pearson, hasworked extremely hard to get CCpassed in Illinois and want to see itdone as professionally as possible. This is serious business and is notto be taken lightly. The last thingwe need is to have someone actinglike John Wayne taking the lawinto their own hands. There havebeen some shootings in Florida

time ago. They dont ask for noth-ing from anyone and it makes mefeel good when I drive throughthat part of the country. Theirfarms are so well kept and remindme of what America was likewhen I was a young man. Theydont use a lot of modern thingswe take for granted. But I wonderjust how much better a society wewould be if we took a little moreafter them. Thank God there arestill people in America who canmake it on their own if they wantto.

This cabin fever thing is reallygetting bad. I know a lot of folkswho are in a state of depression. Ifyou are that is normal for this timeof the year. Which is True Reform;Term Limits or

Fair Map AmendmentI completely understand we as Illinois

Voters are tired of politics the way theystand today in Illinois. We are tired of thesame elected leaders controlling the stateand leader who are more interested in con-trol and little to nothing to do with what isbest for the citizens of Illinois. And most ofall, we are tired of these leaders making andchanging the rules so that our vote, ourvoice stands for less and less.

Currently, this frustration has beenfocused on Term Limits as the solution toour problem. This is in no small waythanks to a very large amount of moneycoming from a very select few to promotethis nebulous solution. But here is my con-cern about Term Limits the way it is beingpresented now and what I see as the currenttrue solution.

The way the Term Limits legislation iscurrently written, it would only be focusedat Illinois State Representatives and IllinoisState Senators. Our US Congressmen andUS Senators would not have term limits.More shocking, all of the ConstitutionalOfficers (Illinois Governor, Secretary ofState, State Treasurer, State AttorneyGeneral and State Comptroller) would alsobe exempted from Term Limits.

Example: One of the targets of this cur-rent push for many Republicans is Mike

Madigan. While this will successfullyremove Mike Madigan, who is most likelyclose to retirement anyhow, this wouldallow his daughter Lisa Madigan to remainAttorney General and maybe somedayGovernor for as long as she would wish.

Your vote has a larger impact on yourState Representative and Senator than theother elected officials I listed above. Assuch they are your voice. You can locateyour State Representative and Senator closeto your home and meet with them to dis-cuss your concerns. How many of you havedriven to Springfield lately to try to discussan issue with the Governor? (For thisGovernor, try Chicago rather thanSpringfield)

Why would you want to handicap yourown voice that of your State Representativeand State Senator, but do nothing to limitthese other powerful leaders. The resultwould be a more powerful Governor andmore powerful other Constitutional

Leaders while your State Representativeand Senator would be diminished.

Term Limits for all would be a com-pletely different issue, but as it stands todayTerm Limits for your State Representativeand Senator without the others is notreform and is not something I would sup-port. I also find it interesting that thespokesman of this push for Term Leaders iscampaigning for an office that would not

be under Term Limits.Real Reform is being offered today and it

is called the Fair Map Amendment. Todaythe politicians can pick and chose whovotes for them by the old process called"Gerrymandering.". If the Fair MapAmendment passes, the voters woulddecide who votes for the politicians. Thiswould result in real reform and real changein Politics in Illinois.

    Celebrating30 Years!

I found my first whitetail shed antlerpurely by accident. I was setting fox trapsalong a brushy fencerow and there was ashed antler which had been lying therefor the better part of a year. I picked it upand brought it home. Despite the factthat it was somewhat chewed up, it wasclear this antler came from a big 10-pointbuck. I became fascinated by the amazingphenomenon of antlers.

Antlers are the fastest form of animalgrowth known to man; they can growmore than an inch a day. Every antler isdifferent; like snowflakes, they all haveunique characteristics.

My fascination with antlers led me tobecome fascinated with the bucks that

shed hunting, you have noticed that theyall seem to relate back to how to shoot thebuck that shed them. Frankly, I believethat the connection between where youfind the bucks sheds and where you arelikely to shoot that buck the followingdeer season is way overrated. In fact, oneof the largest matched sets I ever foundwas found more than five miles fromwhere a friend shot the buck the follow-ing year. It missed making the Boone andCrockett book by less than an inch.

Deer need to eat every day, and theywill go where the food is. In the winterwhen antlers are dropping, food may bemiles away from where a buck spends themajority of his time in the fall. Whichleads us to tip number two.Find the food

Wintering whitetails need high-carbo-hydrate foods and they need them everyday. Find the food and you will find thesheds. Remember this mantra: findingsheds is all about the food. Figure outwhere the deer are feeding and thenspend the majority of your time dividedbetween their feeding and bedding areas. The antlers are more likely to fall offwhen they are feeding because they aremoving about. Corn, soybeans, milo, turnips, and other food plots are key tothe winter whereabouts of whitetails.

Pay special attention to the windswepthilltops. Snow blows off the hilltops, andany lost grain from farming operationswill be more accessible there. The big set

grew them. Over time I evolved from abowhunter who wanted to just put somemeat in the freezer to someone whoappreciated the challenge of shooting amature buck. Yet I found that the antlersthemselves held a curious intrigue in andof themselves. Allow me to offer sometips from a lifetime of experience that willhelp you find and appreciate the amazingantler.

Forget the home range mythBecause I started hunting shed antlers

for the sake of the antlers themselves, Ididnt have any preconceived notionsabout their importance to my deer hunt-ing. If you have read any articles about

    ShedHunting: A Sport

    Unto Itselfby BernieBarringer

of matched sheds I mentioned earlier? Ifound one side on top of a hill in the soy-bean stubble and the other side in a thickfarm grove 200 yards away.

Winter cover: thermal and solarThere are two kinds of areas bucks tend

to bed during the winter. Solar coverincludes the south sides of slopes that aresomewhat open and allow the deer to bedin areas where the sun can warm themduring the day. Thermal cover is thethickest, nastiest stuff they can find thatthey will use during cold, cloudy, windy, and stormy weather. If you find thesetypes of bedding areas within a short dis-tance of a good food source, and you havea good number of bucks in the area, find-ing sheds could be like picking up Eastereggs. Youve hit the jackpot.

Connect the dotsDeer need to travel between bedding

areas and the food. Trails will developbetween these areas and the obvious signis easy to find and follow. The moresnow, the better. Get out early before thesnow melts and find these trails for lateruse. A lot of sheds can be found on theseconnecting trails. Pay special attention tothe areas where they have to jump overfences, climb steep creek banks, and soon. These areas tend to jar the shedsloose.

most of these parks would have lawsagainst picking any kind of plant, butnothing about collecting shed antlers. The deer would be bunched up there ingreat numbers during the winters, whichmade them very fertile ground for shedhunting.

Get there earlyBack in the 1980s there were very few

people collecting sheds. No so any more.I would wait until late March when theantlers were all cast, and the snow wasmostly melted, before I would go shedhunting. Then one day while I was walk-ing a deer trail in a park in central Iowa,I came over a hill and was face-to-facewith another shed hunter. In his handwas the other side of the shed I held in myhand. This was the beginning of the endfor the way I shed hunted. Now you mustget there early and often if you are goingto collect sheds. Its become a popular

    sport.

Set up a shed trapI could do an entire

article on creatingeffective shed traps, but heres the shortversion. A shed trap issomething that causesthe bucks to comeback over and over, with an apparatus ofsome sort that increas-es the possibilities thatthe shed will drop atthe site. This could beas easy as pouring abucket of corn in athick deadfall wherethe buck has to pushhis head in to eat, toelaborate systems ofwire or bungee cordsfixed above a feeder.

I use a simple sys-tem of woven wire inthe shape of a V withsome feed inside thepoint of the V. I donot like the use ofsnow fence, bungeesor anything that couldentangle the antler. Ithink it is too danger-ous to the deer. Thewire simply bumps into the antler as thedeer feeds and when its ready to come offit will fall off. You can see my methodillustrated in the video embedded below.

Hunting shed antlers can provideinformation that will help you with yourdeer hunting, mostly in the form of aninventory of the bucks that survived the

previous hunting season. But more thanthat, its good exercise, good family fun,and a way to enjoy one of the mostremarkable things in nature: the amazingantler.

Antlers occasionally fall off together, but thats somewhat rare. I do believe;however, that the buck will put quite a bitof effort into getting the other side offbecause of the lopsided feeling he haswith one antler. Hes shake his head, rubthe antler on trees, and push it on theground to work it off. If you find a niceshed, put an exhaustive effort into findingthe other side. Its probably close by.

No hunting doesnt usually mean noshed hunting

Some of the best shed hunting I foundback 30 years ago when I started collect-ing bone was found in state parks wherehunting was not allowed. Where theseparks bordered crop fields on private landwere often gold mines for shed antlers. The deer would feed in the fields and bedin the safety of the park. Surprisingly,

Finding Shed Antlers becomes a lot easier when you begin to understand the importance of

high-carbohydrate foods to the deer during the winter when their diet dictates their daily movements.

So again, are you going to vote forthese same illustrious people again tofurther destroy the Constitution? Itstime to vote for people who are againstthose people! Are you people in Chicagogoing to keep voting for the same peoplejust because they are Democrats andyou are too? They have denied you rightto self-defense, had you pay money for a constitutional right (2nd Amendment)and register your guns like criminals!

I seen a video of African-Americans rallying at a meeting and blaming the 5thfloor at City Hall for the mess they have. They are waking up!! So the questionagain is you going to vote for any of them again?

You see elections were set up so that the American people can vote out thepoliticians that have abused their rights and denied them their freedoms! It be-comes your chance to do something about them. It only comes around everycouple tears, but if you dont weed them out now you will suffer for a couple moreyears!

Use it wisely. It will only affect you in the future, so think about your future!!We definitely need more pro-gun legislators in Springfield. Call the offices of thepeople running in your district. Ask them, What is your stance on gun control?Quinn tried to tear apart the CC bill to make it so watered down, so are you goingto vote for him? Whatever you do, dont go into that booth and say to yourself,Yes I love what they are doing to me and I will vote for themagain!

If they vote anti-gunvote anti them!Rep. Cassidy has proposed a bill to register all guns in Illi-

actual buyer if you are purchasing the firearm for yourself or otherwise acquiring thefirearm for yourself (e.g., redeeming the firearm from pawn/retrieving it from con-signment, firearm raffle winner). You are also the actual buyer if you are acquiringthe firearm as a legitimate gift for a third party. ACTUAL BUYER EXAMPLES: Mr.Smith asks Mr. Jones to purchase a firearm for Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith gives Mr. Jonesthe money for the firearm. Mr. Jones is NOT THE ACTUAL TRANSFEREE/BUYER of thefirearm and must answer "NO" to question 11a. The licensee may not transfer thefirearm to Mr. Jones. However, if Mr. Brown goes to buy a firearm with his own mon-ey to give to Mr. Black as a present, Mr. Brown is the actual buyer of the firearm andshould answer "YES" to question 11a. However, you may not transfer a firearm to anyperson you know or have reasonable cause to believe is prohibited under 18 U.S.C. 922(g), (n), or (x).

    Small TalkHow Will You Vote

    by Don Bekeleski

Well we are in an election year. This gives us Americans a chance to reallychange things. So lets look at the issues. Illinois is in terrible shape. Are you go-ing to vote for Quinn again and his cohorts, so we too will be able to file bank-ruptcy as a state? America is in ruins! No one has money, lot of people have nojobs. The government is in your emails, your phone calls, and they have dronesspying on you too.

Your 2nd Amendment rights are constantly under attack by this administra-tion. We dont ban cars to stop drunk driversneither should we ban guns!!Do you really believe the dribble coming from the White House? The White houseis constantly blaming gun ownership for the shootings occurring. Excuse meGeorge Washington said there were hundreds of guns in private hands and bytheir silence you know they are behaving. SO TRUE!!

guys next door, the violent husbands andwives as well and the dangerous drunks inour taverns. From 1920 through 1950 wehad 215 murders: that averages out at 7.1murders per year. WOW! How in thehell did we manage to live through such aslaughter. Ask your grandpa.

Now here are some of the men that wereactive mainly in the 1930s and certainlyduring WWII in Peoria, Illinois. Theseare the men that were our DesignatedGangsters according to our most vocalsources, uncles that drank too much andour grandfathers that spent too much timedowntown gambling and drinking in ourtaverns. They got them mixed up with thebusiness men, the tavern owners, and ofcourse the gamblers.

Hell, thousands of men, and certainly alot of women gambled in Peoria and itstarted even before the Civil War. By thebeginning of WW1 it was one of Peoriasmajor industries along with prostitution. All during WWII gambling reached its ab-solute peak, ending on September 3, 1946.If you want to find out details then youwill have to do a little reading.

Kelly.Edward Nelson Woodruff: He was our

mayor 11 times for a total of 24 years. Most certainly he was the most importantman in our history and a decent honestman.

Jack Adams: Adams owned The CloverClub and a few other spots around town.He was a trustworthy, honest, hardworkingbusiness man in the middle of every dollarthat was ever spent on gambling and enter-tainment in Peoria, Illinois. You should beso successful.

Frank Kraemer: Owned two taverns intown. One was The Spot and he was partowner of the Par-K-Club. Frank was in-volved in gambling of all kinds in Peoria.Kraemer was shot and killed out at hishome on Farmington Road in Septemberof 1946by a real gangster. Actually hewas out of the gambling business when hewas killed.

PHILLIP STUMPF: Now here was atwo-bit punk. He was an iron worker whenhe worked but he liked acting like a gang-ster. What a joke He was a Part-TimeSLOT MACHINE repair man and fixedthem as well ifyou know what Imean. In October1946 he was out atThe STORKCLUB near Gold-en Acres at the oldRoute 150 area. Heleft after fixing slotsand was tailed. Hepulled into a fieldto escape and hereis where theMYTH starts. Acar came after him.All four of themen in the car firedThompson Ma-chine guns at theback of his car.

    The coroners in-quest, ballistics and

the police and sheriff reports state it was hit8 times and one slug hit Stumpf in the backof the head. One slug nicked the left ear ofhis passenger. Its amazing isnt it that notone .45 Thompson Machine Gun emptyshell was found. Sorry gangster fansjustlittle old .38 caliber.

DWIGHT Snooks Gordon: He was abusiness man and was most definitely intogambling and owned some slotssure ashell was no gangster.

He was a flashy guy and he looked toughand believe me he was. He was an amateurboxer but a fortune was bet on him duringhis 234 fights. He liked to flash his moneyaround and he loved Peoria night life.Gordon killed a man in a fight over at theentrance to the Zoo in a fist fight he didnot want nor did he provoke. After a cir-cus style murder trial he was exonerated bythe jury.

VIC MICHEL: Vic was a lawyer andeventually Mayor of Peoria who defended afew notorious so called bad men includingSnooks Gordon. Now he would defendanyone that could pay his inflated price butif you defend guys like Snook Gordon you

al worthless creep named Joe Nyberg. Most Peorians felt that he should havebeen given a medal for that. Jack was justa local street guy trying to make a living ingambling and petty crimes. Actually he wasjust a penny ante nuisance to the police de-partment.

JACK GLAZEBROOK Supposed to bea body guard of Bernie Shelton and a ma-jor gangster in town. What a joke. Afriend maybe and certainly was seen a lotwhen Bernie was around. All he everwaswas a bouncer at a few clubs in town. This big scary gangster was shot in thestomach by Al Capones mobsters. JUSTKidding! His girlfriend damn near killedhim by shooting him in the stomach with a.25 handgun she always carried in herpurse.

PETE PETRAKIS: Pete was just ahanger on type guy trying to make a livingone way or the other. He knew all thecreeps and was one himselfBernie firedhim and I got that straight from JackPurtcher who knew them both. AfterBernies murder a couple guys includingTED LINK, a Saint Lewis reporter weresaid to have hung Pete naked upside downout a window at the Pere Marquette Hotel. Who killed Shelton? Was the question hesure as hell did not know the answer to.He was a friend of Bernie and Shelton paidfor the up keep of a horse that Pete rodeout at Purtchers Stable. Jack Purtcher toldme that Shelton told him that Pete wouldnot be using his horse any more becauseBernie had fired him. Of course the rumorwas that Shelton had killed him, which wasnot true.

JOHN KELLY: My Uncle told me thathe was a cousin of one kind or the other ofours, but never really talked about him.

He was arrested a minimum of 100 timesand was described as a Police Character. In and out of jails, prison, you name it.Talk about a small town hoodlum: that isall he was. He was with Shelton the nightthey attacked a guy named Murphy therein the parking lot of the dump called TheParkway. They were both indicted on sev-en felonies. Why he was not shot or putaway forever is beyond me. Maybe becausehe was just a two-bit punk and not worththe effort. Gangstermy God you wouldelevate him if you called him that.

JOEL Joe Nyberg. A killera thief, aconvict and at the time he was killed he wasout on Bond for a manslaughter convic-tion. He was about as close to being a gang-ster as any one could imagine. But re-member, gangsters are part of an organizedgang. Joe was just a dangerous man, out onhis own to steal, rob, burglarize and maimanyone that he thought he could take ad-vantage of. He died with a couple .38 slugsin his body and a ball bat near his body.Again, calling this character a gangster tohis face would make him feel like you ad-mired him. Good Riddance.

BERNIE SHELTON: I have writtenhundreds of words about this man. Bookstell us he was a member of Illinois Blood-iest Gang! So what does that have to dowith Peoria, Illinois? He was a gangster inPeoria because that is what we perceivedhim to be. If you wont take the time toread what I wrote about him, then just goahead and call him a Gangster. It is morefun that way. He was shot and killed herein July of 1948 and then the real myth-makers took over.

All this information is no surprise to thepeople who have read my 14 books andhundreds of stories and also read ASOMagazine. My books are out of print, but afew might be available in our libraries.

However, all you have to do is make the ef-fort and read them for yourselves. I do haveclose to a hundred of them online. Findthem. If you have trouble doing that, thene mail me and I will show you where theyare. Over the little time I might have left Ihope to get most of the rest of my storiesonline. Unfortunately, Ive also seen how the lack offocus from the current administration has caused theerosion of morale within the IDNR. Ive learned how thelack of frontline workers is directly effecting the ad-ministration of programs that we, as outdoors enthu-siasts, count on.

I also learned how excessive regulation can hinderour growth. As Governor, I will order a review of theseregulations and work to streamline them. We will getrid of cumbersome rules that do little but generate bu-reaucratic red tape.

I will ensure that we have professionals leading theDepartment of Natural Resources and will replace un-necessary top-heavy layers of bureaucrats with front-

line workers. I will support those that protect and en-hance our parks and natural resources and work togive them the necessary tools to achieve their mis-sion. Too often, administrators seem to be more con-cerned with their own legacy than with providing thesupport needed. I believe that the men and women ofthe IDNR are among the most talented in the countryand I will support them wholeheartedly. We will workclosely with you, the public, and listen to your con-cerns and suggestions for sound management prac-tices. I will instruct the IDNR to work with such sisteragencies as the Department of Agriculture to createways for our landowners to restore such things as crit-ical habitat for upland game and waterfowl.

We must be good stewards of our land, and like-wise, we must be good stewards of our finances. The

last decade has been tough economically, and I want toget Illinois back on track. We need to review all pro-grams and curtail ones that may have outlived theirpurpose or failed. I will not keep putting the burden onthe backs of taxpayers. We will live within our means.

Whether its hunting, fishing, boating, hiking or ahost of other activities, we owe it to all of you to ensureour natural resources are viable for future genera-tions. We will meet the challenges that we face head-on and work together for all of Illinois.

Natural Resources are vital toIllinois Economic Growth

    By Senator Bill Brady

Illinois has a vast diversity of natural resources --from the fishery of Lake Michigan, to our state parks, and to the vast woodlands of the Shawnee NationalForest. As citizens, we are charged to protect and takecare of our natural resources. We learn to use themwisely and manage them so that they will thrive for fu-ture generations. When people look for a new place tolocate, quality access to the outdoors ranks high onthe list.

During my campaign for Governor, Ive seen howour natural resources are important both estheticallyand economically. From boat rentals to outfitters for

Last year on opening day of the Missouri springgobbler season I experienced one of the toughestweather days of turkey hunting I had ever seen. It hadrained for 3 straight days and the winds were gustingover 40-miles per hour. This year has not so far beenmuch better.

The drought has ended and monsoon rains engulfedthe Show-Me State the first week of the season. Ifa ditch, creek, stream or river could floodit did.Opening day is however opening day so not huntingwas not an option.

Just like the past few Missouri turkey season open-ers Bob Cowman was my cameraman. Last yearsfootage was excellent and we hoped to repeat thathunt in weather just as harsh. The good thing this yearis that the rain had prevented the field from beingplowed before the season. Last year it was a mud-wal-low getting to the blind. Last week the field was just aswet but solid under the standing water, making get-ting there much easier.

It rained all night and drops spit on us as we drove. The trip across the field was uneventful and we wereset-up plenty early. It was wet and windy. That is howI knew turkey season had begun.

There was very little gobbling off the roost and the

field that usually filled with birds by 6 oclock was voidand empty at 6:30. I began calling but with no re-sponse. A bit later a couple of hens entered the field. They were not interested in my decoys and began tofeed in the opposite direction.

As I watched them at a distance I noticed moremovement way on the other side of the field, severalhundred yards out. It was the silhouette of two gobblerfans in full strut. I called but due to the less-than-per-fect conditions I seriously doubt that they heard me. Afew more hens came and went from the field and wewatched the toms for several hours as they movedaround the property. We also saw a total of 8 jakes.None of them got close enough to hear my calls. Open-ing day ended uneventfully.

Then the weather really got bad. It rained on Tues-day, Wednesday and Thursday but I am sure I need notremind you of that. Friday was supposed to be somebetter, but much colder. Bob could not film of Fridayso I would be on my own to fill the first weeks tag.

When I stepped outside of my daughter Katieshouse at 4:30 on Friday morning I was greeted withsnow flakes in my face. When am I gonna get abreak? I said out loud. Is there an earthquake or avolcano in my turkey hunting future? How much can I

take?It got no better as I drove to my farm. The flakes

turned to tiny round ice pellets that bounced off thehood of my truck like miniature hail stones. I justshook my head in frustration. At least there wont beany skeeters, I told myself.

Since I was alone I decided to set-up on the otherside of the field where all the action was earlier in theweek. I set out my three decoys and tucked into adeadfall next to the stump. I had a great view of thefield and the wind blowing the ice pellets was to myback. I felt like I should have been deer hunting. Infact, as I recall deer season last year was warmer thanthis.

As the cloudy morning sky lightened my frustrationgrew. The few gobbles I was hearing were coming fromthe south side of the field, near the blind I was in onMonday. That figures, I thought. Why do I do thisto myself? I could be at home in bedwarm anddry.

Once again it was 6:30 and there was not a bird inthe field. This was impossible. I have been on this fieldin the spring and seen as many as thirty turkeys outthere with seven or eight strutting. Where were they?

I got impatient so I picked-up my MOUNTAINSCREAMER box call and made a series of way too loudyelps. I put the call down and looked to the north andhere came a gobbler toward the decoys at a sprint. Henever gobbled and I have no idea how long he had beenup there watching. And you know what? I did not care. All I knew was a big tom was coming in fast and hard.

I knew better than to move too soon. I was going towait until he was at the decoys to raise my THOMP-SON/CENTER 12-gauge Encore. That way if I spookedhim he would be well within range for a lethal escapeshot.

When he got to my strutting jake decoy he puffed-

up into strut and began doing circles around Tommy. As he turned his back on his second trip I raised mygun. As he faced me I made a single cluck and hestopped and looked up. An ounce and five-eights ofFEDERAL #7s dropped him cleanly.

There was no sunshine for the photos but underthese conditions a 22-pound gobbler with an 11-icnhbeard was a gift from the Lord. Weather or not, I amextremely grateful for this gift.

Switchin GearsFor those of you that have been following

us Meanderers for some time now have real-ized that we have morphed over time fromfree traveling motor homers, to motorhomers anchored in Louisiana, and mostrecently back to a landlocked life in CentralIllinois. Of course we had to do it in theyear that has seen the worst winter since theyear I moved to Peoria in 1978. The badnews is the snow shovel still fits my hands. But, I dont have to tell anyone in the con-fines of this magazines readership area, howtruly spectacular this winter has been. Okayit has been beautiful and that only goes sofar, and thats only if youre not going tohave to travel anywhere.

The deer in the back yard and the pot-pourri of birds have been an absolute joy towatch. Cheryl has always been into feedingthe birds, even down south where they did-nt have to peck thru four feet of snow to get

their own food. If Ive followed her accu-rately, we have four species of woodpeckersthat she gets excited about, and of course allthe other birds that prefer their seeds neatand not in a portion of congealed grease.

Her ongoing battle with the squirrels ofthe hood is a constant source of enter-tainment to me as she does her slipperedshuffle from her spot on the couch to theback porch and her armament of pebbles, snowballs or that ever dangerous fingershake, that come out when they pillage thecedar feeder. She is convinced that all of hertree rat opponents north or south are relat-ed to each other. I believe that we are nowup to about Killer (her pet name for thetree rats) number fourteen between the twolocales. Killer one actually attempted to dis-member her with a dull axe when she first

attempted to dissuade his irritating eatinghabits.

Now as eating habits are a fact of life so isthe resulting defecation that occurs with anyliving creature. Birds leave their little pack-ages all around the feeders and baths and thesquirrels; who knows? All the little defecatesare tolerable in their unnoticeable size. What I do know is where our residentsouthern waterfowl left their particularlylarge and noticeably numerous packages onour front deck! Again, it was enjoyable tofeed the mallards and Canada geese alongwith a couple of half breed geese that wouldeat out of our hands. We paid for our pseu-do aviary with our tolerance of the porchpackages. We trained em to do it, I guesswe had to.

We so far love the deer, birds and tree ratsbut it leaves us to wonder what else wellneed to reload for as we have returned to thefrozen tundra of the far north. Wait! It isjust Illinois; isnt it? The constants are thatLouisiana and Illinois are the one and tworanked states for Lyme disease and bothstruggle to survive under the yoke of corruptstate bureaucrats, even though Illinois hasseveral more politicos in the slammer thanLouisiana, and I will say that given similarbudget cuts in both states, Louisiana does abetter job of managing the outdoors thanIllinois.

It was a bit of a shock when we began themove from one political mess to another. Itis amazing how much stuff we accumulat-ed down there and we dont even have it all

back up here yet, and there was no furnitureetc. I, right now, have fishing gear out theWazoo sitting in my garage waiting to dis-cover what the difference is between fishingToledo Bend and the Illinois River. I dontthink Ill go there. It will be a big change, and I have zero qualms about eating fish thatcomes out of the bend. I cannot say thesame about the produce of the Illinois River.

But, we will have alternate places to fishand I believe that well also find a couple ofplaces to chase some deer and maybe even afew turkeys. The weather differences speakfor themselves with the south losing with itssizzling heat of summer fishing, and thenorth takes the dive with its bone chillingwaterfowl and deer seasons. Those boys(and girls) in Dixie have no clue what cold isall about.

Hey, there are good qualities in both areaswith the size of southern bass for sure beingoff set by the difference of the northern sub-species of deer that outsize their southerncousins by pounds and pounds and withracks on the bucks the likes of which thoseDixie folks have never thought about.

No matter. It is what it is, and where everyoure going thats where you are. Its aboutgoing and doing in the outdoors; isnt it?After all is said and done it is good to becloser to family. You can fish and hunt any-where. It is just time for us toswitchgears.

worse than the currentcrew in Congress, scoutfor funnels displayingfresh coyote tracks anddroppings. Now look fora high point to watchthese locations at dawnand dusk. You may justcatch a coyote sneakingby as it goes about itsdaily business. Areas I'vewatched in the past in-clude rivers, creeks, wet-land edges, weedy fencelines and tight canyons, particularly those thatconnect to prime huntingor bedding cover. Your lungs areamazing and they allow you toforce small volumes or air or gustsof wind to change the tone of ahandheld call. If you use a di-aphragm call (www.primos.com)you can go from howls, to yips topredator squalls, all with your de-sired inflection. This "real" soundcan sometimes be the spark to lurein a hesitant coyote and it hasadded value in the fact you canchange the tone, and volume con-veniently while watching a coyoteclose the distance. As the end of winter nears youmay be experiencing difficult timesin the coyote calling arena. I knowmy setup success decreases thistime of year and I surmise it is like-ly from months of coyotes beingshot at and the increase in predatorhunting participants. If you stillhope to tag a coyote or two beforethe end of winter you may want totry an off-the-wall strategy or stepoutside of the box. Here are a fewto mull over.

Nighttime Most animals, prey and predator,

feel confident and move more dur-ing the cover of darkness. Checkyour state game regulations and iflegal, consider a nighttime coyotecaper. The United States is experi-encing ample snow cover and thisprovides ideal conditions for anight hunt, especially if you don'thave night-vision equipment.Watch the forecast and look for aclear night with a bright moon. Now sneak into the edge of an openfield covered in snow and begincalling. You may want to tote ashotgun as you never know whenan overconfident coyote could runyou over on a tranquil winterevening.

The FBI released the Preliminary Semi-annualUniform Crime Report for the first six months of2013 on Tuesday. According to the statisticsfound in the report, all of the offenses in theviolent crime categoryincluding murder, forcible rape, assault, and robberyshowed asignificant decrease in early 2013 from the sameperiod in 2012. This drop in violent crimecoincided with one of the largest booms for gunsales in recent history.

The FBI report was compiled with datasubmitted by 12,723 law enforcement agencies inthe United States for the Uniform Crime ReportingProgram. Compared to 2012, the first half of2013 was marked by an across-the-boarddecrease in crime. The numbers of murders inJanuary to June 2013 decreased by 6.9 percent, forcible rapes declined by 10.6 percent, aggravated assaults declined by 6.6 percent, androbberies by 1.8 percent. Arson and propertycrime also plummeted in 2013.

The biggest decrease of crime occurred in smalltowns with fewer than 10,000 residents, whichaveraged a drop of 9.2 percent in violent crime. The largest population groupcities with morethan one million residentssaw a drop of 4.7percent in violent crime. Regionally, the largestdrop in crime occurred in the Midwest with a 7.4percent decrease, followed by 5.9 percent in theSouth, 4.3 percent in the Northeast, and 3.7

percent in the West. The FBI report does not speculate on any causes

for the drop of crime in early 2013, and admitsthat some data may be incomplete. Some gunrights advocates, however, point out the decreasein crime coincided with a surge in gun sales. In justthe first five months of 2013, law enforcementagencies processed more than 10 millionbackground checks. To put that in perspective, only 14.4 million background checks wereprocessed in the whole of 2010. New gun ownersalso contributed to the sales boom, with theNational Shooting Sports Foundation reporting ina survey that 25.8 percent of customers in late2012 and early 2013 were first-time buyers.Overall, gun sales have been in an upswing inrecent years, but experts point to recent guncontrol legislation for spurring on sales.

When Maryland Governor Martin OMalleysigned a package of gun control bills into law lastyear, customers swarmed retailers ahead of thelaws effective date of October 1. State police hadto hire a team of data entry personnel to keep upwith the sudden flood of background checks andsome sources reported more than 1,000 firearmsbeing sold a day in the weeks leading up toOctober.
