son and keep those memoriesclose to your heart be-cause that is what it is allabout.

There are a lot of evil peo-ple in the world and some of thethings that have been happeninglately make me sick. And theyshould make you sick also. Thebeating death of a 88 year oldWW2 vet in Washington state bytwo black kids behind a EaglesLodge for no apparent reason istroubling alone but when 2 blackkids and 1 white kid shoot and killan Australian college student baseball player in Oklahoma be-cause they were bored is a ap-palling. What has happened toAmerica? You and I know that thatit wasnt the gun that did it did butsome dirt bag kids who have novalue for life what so ever. The 88year old man was beaten by a flash-light and died in hospital. I guesswe should put a 3 day waiting peri-od on flashlights. This is just a fewof the cases that have happenedlately. When is the media and thegovernment going to recognize thatwe dont have a gun problem butwe have a generation of idiots whokill for the sake of killing. All 5 ofthe murderers were from welfarefamilies. In fact 95 percent of theincarcerated people in the US comefrom the same kind of back ground.Lets dont make guns illegal butmaybe we should make welfare il-legal. Where are Obamas com-

Canterbury Talesthe rest of the year.

Talking to a retired IDNR guywho is in the know said it should bea pretty good season. I cant thinkof anything that I like to shoot anymore than doves. They have to beone of the sportiest birds to shoot inthe country. I have been hunting atDave Fornoffs for over 30 yearsand it has become a family traditionthat I cherish and hopefully will forsome time to come. Many of theguys I hunted with at Daves arenow gone but there memories willlast a life time. My Dad Jack wholoved to hunt doves was there a fewmonths before he passed away. Heknew it was his last hunt and he hada hard time getting the gun up butloved every second he was there. We always shot by an old tree thatis now gone but I still rememberhim smiling and saying Tuffy this iswhat shooting is all about. By theway my nick name from dad wasTuffy. I dont know why he calledme that but that is what it was. Ihavent been called that for a longtime and I bet next time I see some-one who I know that is what theywill call me. I think everyone at onetime or another had a nick name. Those precious memories of sittingon a stool in the hot sun on openingday of dove season are with me for-ever. And the friends I had who aregone now, names like Marvin, Doc,Jimmy, Keith, Bob, Nelson andmany others will be there at least inmemory on opening day and sowill Dad. Enjoy this upcoming sea-

GRILLED DOVES A LA MANCHAThis is a simple, satisfying way to get into

some doves. Doves are so easy to pluck that youshould really be ashamed of yourself if you dont I can pluck one in less than a minute when Iget my groove on. Besides, gnawing on the littlelegs is primal and slightly naughty; they are verylittle birds, after all.

Spanish smoked paprika is integral to thisdish. Many good supermarkets offer it, but youcan also buy it online from Earthy Delights.

Figure on 2-3 doves per person for a lightlunch or an appetizer, or 3-5 for a main course. Ican eat more than this, but then again I amsomething of a glutton. I will give you a recipe for4 people.12 dovesKosher salt3 tablespoons olive oil12 bay leaves12 sage leavesSpanish smoked paprikaFreshly ground black pepperAbout 1/4 cup melted bacon fat

Rub the doves with olive oil and salt them well.Stuff each cavity with a sage and a bay leaf.

Grill over medium-high to high heat with thebreast side up for 6-8 minutes. Do not let themchar!

Turn them over and grill for 4-6 minutes.Paint them with the bacon fat.

Turn the doves on their sides and grill for 1-2minutes for each side. Paint with more baconfat.

Remove to a platter and paint with the remain-ing bacon fat. Dust with the smoked paprika andthe black pepper. Let them rest for 5 minutes.

Eat with your fingers and serve with a Rioja redwine, a California Pinot Noir or an ItalianBarbaresco and a bowl to put the bones in.

I have been using Berkley Powerbaits for years. They really workwell but I have a problem with itcoming off the hook after I haveused it a short time. A new bait thatis out I really like is called Fizards.Somehow they have made a compa-rable bait that stays on the hook fora long time. It works in my opinionas well or better. It is a NEW fishattractant that will change the wayyou fish. It is really worth tryingthis bait and I think you will like it.You can buy them atwww.Fizards.com.

These two new products are madeby entrepreneurs in Illinois and bothhave put their hearts into theseproducts, and should be a real suc-cess. They are not imported butmade right here in the USA. Thatssomething you dont hear muchanymore.

and the Cardinals 9Its no secret that I love the St. Louis

Cardinals. The Birds on the Bats have beenmy one and only baseball team. I remembersitting in the washroom of my grandparentsfarm house listening to the Cardinals gameon a small am radio with my grandfather.

The 85 Cardinals stand out in my mindas the dream team: Jack Clark, WillieMcGee, Tom Herr, Andy Van Slyke,Whitey Herzog, John Tudor, Bob Forsch,Todd Worrell and of course historys all timebest shortstop Ozzie Smith. What a team.

On my list of all time favorite pitchers;Bob Gibson, can there be anyone else?

All time favorite hitter; Albert Pujols. And who could forget Go crazy, folks!

    Go crazy!

What about Stan the man Musial; wellthe more I read and learn about his life themore I look at him as a perfect example ofthe ideal man, ideal gentleman.

And the idea of an ideal man, the idealindividual for all of us to look upto, leads

into this months column.I did not get the chance to see 42, the

recent new movie about the life of JackieRobinson, when it was released in theatersalthough I had really wanted to. My wife andI are finding that our ability to see newmovies will have to wait until the kids getolder.

But today I found myself at home aloneon this mid-summer afternoon with thechance to watch it. And it was worth thewait. What a very well done, very movingmovie. But now I sit here confoundedbecause one of the leading villains in themovie is my favorite St. Louis Cardinals.

What did I miss? Is the account correct? My curiosity is driving me to seek the truth. If it had been the Yankees, I could just acceptit and move on. It would simply be just onemore reason to hate the pinstripes. Some fel-low Cardinal fans might add the Cubs, butcan you really hate a minor league team?

But the Cardinals I cannot accept on thislisting.

Enos Slaughter is a Cardinal I recall for hisfamous Mad Dash that won Game 7 of the1946 World Series for the Cardinals. By thenumbers, you have one of the best CardinalHitters of all-time, with his name on the St.Louis Career Lists at second in RBI (1,148),third in triples (135) and walks (839), fourthin games (1,820), runs (1,071), hits (2,064)and total bases (3,138), fifth in at-bats(6,775) and doubles (366) and 10th in homeruns (146). He batted .300 in eight of his 13seasons with the Cardinals. In 1985 he was

elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In1996, the St. Louis Cardinals retired his jer-sey number 9.

But in the movie 42 they bring up anincident from the 1947 season that brings anew light to the number 9.

On July 18th, 1947, the Cardinals wherein the top of the fifth, down 5-0 to theDodgers. They were not only losing butlooking at a perfect game from Dodgerpitcher Ralph Branca. Enos Slaughter tookBranca to a full count on five pitches beforegrounding out. In a play that was not close atfirst base he stepped on Jackie Robinsonscalf with his spikes, causing a seven inch gashin his leg. In the movie 42 the explanationfor this was Slaughters racist view towardsJackie Robinson becoming the first Blackbaseball player earlier in the season.

Slaughter was no stranger to spikingplayers and had a reputation for an oldschool, take-no-prisoners approach to thegame. Earlier in the season he had also spikedGiant infielder Bill Rigney and the yearbefore had twice injured Dodger EddieStanky. Enos Slaughter went to his death inAugust of 2002 still claiming it was an acci-dent rather than intentionally because ofracism. Others say it differently.

Jackie Robinson dealt with racism allthrough his career, but never more than hisrookie 1947 season. But this incident standsout apart from the rest.

Immediately after going to the ground inpain, pitcher Ralph Branca and otherDodger team mates came to his aid. In an

April 15th, 2012, interview Brancarecalled: I said, Ill get that SOB for youin the next at-bat. Jackie said, No, no,no, you keep pitching like you are. Heunderstood my pitching was more impor-tant.

When Enos Slaughter came up again inthe eighth inning, he had a single to breakup the perfect game. Ralph Branca and theDodgers settled for a one hit, one walkshutout.I cussed myself, Ralph Branca recalledduring the 2012 interview. I said, Youmeathead, you shouldnt have listened toJackie. You should have knocked him onhis ass.

The behavior of Jackie Robinson in thisincident, his turn-the-other-check philoso-phy that was fully tested in 1947 and wasfully displayed in the movie 42, as well ashis other outstanding traits adds him to thelisting of perfect examples of the ideal gen-tlemen. Jackie Robinson like Stan Musial isa perfect role model for anyone looking fordirection on how to live.

As for Enos Slaughter, you cannot judgean individuals life based on one incident. As an example, Columnist Barry Saunderswrote about a conversation with EnosSlaughters daughter, Sharon, following herfathers death. Saunders wrote a column

about the Robinson incident and hisdaughter wanted to provide some furtherinsight into Slaughters personality. She recalled to him When I was in highschool. ... I was vice-president of an awe-some Drama Club. ... I was in charge ofsetting up our end of the year party. I calledthe Roxboro Country Club to reserve anight for our party and guess what? I wastold we could not have the party therebecause of one reason. Do you know whatthat was?

Our Drama Club had 3 black members. So what did I do? I had the party at myhouse!! My mom and dad had no problemwith who came to our house. I tell you allof this because sometimes people do notalways know the whole story.

As for judging the Cardinals based onthe actions of one individual, I found thisstory of Stan Musial that was not includedwith the movie. The next inning, whenRobinson reached first base, he let StanMusial know that he would like to takeSlaughter and some of his cohorts apart. Idont blame you, the Cardinal star quietlyreplied.

As for me, the Cardinals are still myteam.

That said, next time I am at BuschStadium looking down the wall of retired

numbers, numbers 1 (Smith), 6 (Musial),24 (Herzog) and 45 (Gibson) will stillstand out to me above the rest. I want toshow all of them to my sons and talk withthem about the men that wore those num-bers.

But when I get to the number 9(Slaughter), I will have to hesitate a little. After reviewing the Robinson incident andhis past behavior, I believe he did spikeRobinson out of anger. After a getting to afull count, he had just missed his pitch andgrounded out. Was the anger race based, Ithink it looks more likely to be the case.Regardless, his daughters story shows methat if it was racism based in 1947, withtime he had changed his ways and raised

his children to think differently. As far as 42 (Robinson), which is retired

though out baseball and is celebrated everyApril 15th since 2004, I will personallynever look at the number without givingthought to the life of this great gentleman.April 15th will no longer just be a daywhen everyone remembers a baseball play-er but for me and hopefully everyone tookthe time to see 42 will be a chance tolook back at how far we have come and theindividual that showed the bravery to breakdown a barrier.

    WHOPPING 513-POUND HALIBUTCAUGHT OFF NORWAY,

    POTENTIAL WORLD RECORDBy Daniel Xu

A German angler might have a place in the record booksafter a fishing trip to Norway landed him an Atlantic halibut ofmammoth proportions. The angler, Marco Liebenow, foughtthe fish for nearly 90 minutes from his small boat nearKjollefjord, Norway. According to www.dailymail.co.uk, theGerman angler joked to friends that he must have hooked asubmarine.

At 513 pounds, the massive halibut is no joke. It may infact displace the previous rod-and-reel record of 419 poundsheld for Atlantic halibut. In order for the fish to be consideredfor a record, however, it must be weighed and documented onland. It took four men to attach a sling around the fishs tailand tow it back to shore. There, the anglers employed a craneto haul the halibut out of the water. The meat was then dis-

tributed between the anglers and the majority was donated to charity. The fishing trip was organized by Angelreisen Hamburg, who Liebenow consulted with on how and where to

fish for halibut. The angler has since submitted an application to the International Game Fish Association andis awaiting a response.

In May, another German angler fishing in Norwegian waters also made a potential world recordcatch.Michael Eiseles staggering 103-pound cod outweighed the previous record by only five pounds, and ithas already earned a spot for display at a local museum. ASO had that story in June 2013.

The Lake of Egypt, located in southeastern Williamson County IL, will be the site for the Big Kahuna WorldChampionship Bass Fishing Tournament as part of the Bass Widows Fishing Series.

In all, $1.3 million in prize money will be awarded throughout eight weekly qualifying tournaments leading up tothe championship round where even second place pays an astounding $200,000.

The tournament starts October 2. Registration for the tournament begins July 15.To qualify for the championship tournament, fishermen must place in one of the top 15 positions during any one

It has93 miles of shoreline. The lakes average depth is 19 feet with a maximum depth of 52 feet.

How do I get to Carnegie Hall? There are currently a large number of people thinking about applying

for an Illinois Concealed Carry License (CCL). We are all waiting arounddry mouthed to see how all of this is going to play out. Indeed there aremany questions to consider: Where will I get training? How much willeverything cost? What kind of gun do I want to carry? What size does itneed to be? What caliber should I get? How will I carry it? These are allcommon questions that will be answered in due time, and may be differentfor each person.

There are several things you can do while youre waiting to receive yourIllinois CCL. Taking shooting classes, whether they apply toward your Illi-nois CCL or not, make the biggest impact when using your firearm. Beinga good shot requires more than practice; it requires perfect practice, andshooting is a perishable skill which makes continuous repetition even moreimperative. There are many people wanting to do no more than what is re-quired and that is the end of it until requalification in five years. I be-lieve this is a big mistake.

I am reminded of the story of the girl who asked her teacher How doyou get to Carnegie Hall? The teachers reply was There are two ways toget to Carnegie Hall. One is to fly to New York City and take a taxi to8817th Avenue, where Carnegie Hall is located; the other way is to prac-tice, practice, practice! dont have time to practice practice, practice right before you become in-volved in a self-defense situation. This is no place for on-the-job train-ing! The end result has a lot to do with your training, cool headedness, andluck. The more training you have, the more likely you are to stay in control, thus requiring less dependence on luck. We all know about luck right? Ifyou dont have bad luck, you wont have any luck at all. The key here is tominimize reliance on luck, period.

Choosing your instructor is something that needs to be well thought out.Your instructor should be specialized in training civilians. Some instruc-tors are excellent at training the police and military, but this includes a dif-ferent mindset. In most cases, a civilians mindset is a defensive one whilethe police and military mindset is an offensive one. The civilian wants to beable to defend him or herself, their loved ones, and/or other innocent peo-ple until the police arrive. The police and military work at seizing and con-trolling the situation to achieve a desired end. They are not the same. I amnot saying that there are not police and military instructors who cantteach civilians, because there are. I just want you to be aware of the differ-ences.

You should start out with a basic fundamental training course. I would-nt get too excited about doing the advanced stuff just yet, not until youhave a good grasp on the fundamentals. Great athletes all have one thingin commonthey execute the fundamentals well. You should work withthe basics until they are engrained in you. There are those who teach whatI call handgun workout classes, which are skill building classes done un-der the watchful eye of an instructor. These classes help the students dis-cover and correct errors and the instructor then makes sure youve cor-rected your errors. I am mostly opposed to self-practice in the beginningstages because if you arent aware of your errors, you will probably be prac-ticing making errors. The more you practice errors, the more difficult theyare to correct. If you practice alone, stick to the basic marksmanshipskills; advanced classes should be taken after your basic skills are well de-veloped.

Beyond the classes, I recommend you get into a shoot-ing league, because it is the best way to keep you shootingon a consistent basis. You are also surrounded by alltypes of shooters, many who are very knowledgeable.Nearly all of them will share their experiences with you.Shooting in a league also adds just a little pressure, whichis good because when using your gun in self-defense,

pressure is a major factor. When shooting in leagues or matches, most people think that the pres-

sure comes from the competition of shooting against the clock or othercompetitors. It is more than that; it is getting used to noise and commotionthat goes on while being able to successfully manipulate your firearm. Thisis great training should you ever get into a confrontation. You can read end-less articles, books, and watch videos about Concealed Carry and self-de-fense, but the fact is, that your hands on experience is what your mind callson to handle the situation. If you dont have experience to call on, panicmay ensue; sitting in your easy chair does not prepare you for bad situa-tions. Shooting in full-fledged leagues and competitions adds another lev-el of pressure and helps prepare your mind.

There many different types of handgun shooting leagues and competi-tions, which should enhance your shooting abilities. The oldest of theleagues is a Bullseye League. Bullseye requires one handed shooting at 50feet, 25 yards and even 50 yards. If you are able to learn to shoot bullseye, you will be successful at any type of pistol shooting you engage in. GlockLeagues, Springfield Leagues and Police Pistol Combat (PPC) Leagues areon the introductory end and it goes up from there. Combat leagues are al-ways attractive to pistol shooters. In general, Combat Leagues introducedrawing and movement into your skill set. Take your timeleagues helpreinforce and perfect the skills you have already acquired.

There are advanced classes taught at higher levels by Massad Ayoob,Rob Pincus and others, which are always fun. Aside from being fun, theyproduce higher level skills, and you will learn to handle pressure in numer-ous other situations. Whatever you doget started! Predictions are that300,000-400,000 people want an Illinois CCL. With the required 16hours of training, it amounts to somewhere between 4.8 and 6.4 millionhours, which will put quite a strain on instructors and ranges. So, getstarted. If you end up on stage at your Carnegie Hall, it may be the last per-formance of your life if you havent practiced, practiced, practiced.

ny was the companythat won the contractwith the City to handlethe street car businessin Peoria, Illinois.Wellas luck wouldhave it that contractwas coming up for re-newal in 1900 and therail company wantedto make sure they keptcontrol of that lucrativebusiness, so they cameup with a schemea planor was it a flatout bribe? Lets give them the benefit of thedoubt and lets just call it a business plan.Deal?

Anyway they owned some valuable proper-ty within the City of Peoria and they offeredto build a civic center type building for thePeople of Peoria. Now this lot was located onHancock and S. Adams and there was con-siderable value to this piece of real estate. They would build this building and thengivethats rightgive it to the City OfPeoria, Illinoislock-stock and barrel as theyused to say. Now was that an offer MayorBryan and his Alderman could refuse? Ofcourse not. Soin 1901, after the railwayCompany spent $57,000.00 on a new build-ing it belonged to the city. No strings at-

t a c h e d r i g h t .Wow! I wonder whogot the streetcar con-tract? You guessed, good old CentralRailway Company.Surprised? Therewas a nice ceremonyand a gala event con-nected with theopening of The Coli-seum on May 4,1901. Christmascame early dont youthink? Now Peoriahad two magnificentbuildings that the taxpayers living withinthe city did not payone red cent for.The Coliseum andThe Grand Opera

House over on Hamilton Boulevard. Sadlythe opera house burned to the ground in1909.

The Coliseum was the gathering place fornot only most Peorians, but thousands camehere each year for one form of entertainmentor the other. Of course it was a rallying placefor union meetings, political meetings and thesite of some fancy balls and a great meetingplace for all folks of every financial standing.Tragically it too burned to the ground duringthe month of May in 1920. I can tell you thatfolks in Peoria mourned the loss of those twofabulous buildings.

PEORIA, ILLINOISIN 1925Mayor Edward Nelson Woodruff was our

mayor and if there is a deal making mayor inour historyhe would get most of the votes.

It was decided by himthat Peoria shouldbuild a NationalGuard Armoryandwhen he decided to dothatwhy we did it.It was that simple. Ofcourse he had Alder-man to convince, buthe rarely had troubledoing that. Where doyou think he wantedto build it? Why of

course, on the property that was gifted to thecity way back in 1901. SoHancock andAdams was the site, and how they raised themoney, what deals he pulled is all available inthe City Record. First there had to be someagreement with the Governor. Then ofcourse, The United States Government, andfinally with the Unions and on and on it goes. The point is that the Peoria Armory was builtand the building still standsalthough fee-blyto this day.

The idea was to have a place for the IllinoisArmy man to train. That was the plan thatgot all the finances in line, but of courseWoodruff knew that the City of Peoria wouldown it. That meant that they would have ac-cess to it and that of course was the real reasonbehind it all. It worked to perfection. The Illi-nois National Guard had a place to train and

Lets go backto 1900 in Peo-ria, Illinois. Bythen Peoria wassophisticated la-dy, I can tell youthat. The popu-lation was56,100 and welived in a 9.1square miles ofCity Limits. Wehad a magnifi-cent GRANDO P E R AHOUSE, a fist-ful of breweriesand distilleries and a highly rated park systemand school system. We were the center for allkinds of sporting events, and among ourmany, many taverns, we had over 100 church-es. Peoria was simply a wonderful place to live, work and raise kids. Our Mayor was WilliamF. Bryan and he worked out of the very sameCity Hall that is down there across the streetfrom Sacred Heart Church.

a place to call home, and Peoria had a grandsports arena and Con-vention Hall to drawpeople to Peoria. It wasthat simple and itworked like a charm.

I remember being inthat place a lot oftimes. I used to sneakin to the Bradley gamesand as I got a bit older,it became an obsessionwith us. Once in a while a brother or sistertook me to the circus or a boxing match androllerskating there as well. I loved the boxingmatches, especially The Golden Gloves. Thecircus was fun as well. One rigger that workedfor the circus fell to his death and that was sad,but the show must go on and it did. Bradleyplayed there for many years, maybe backwhen it was a Polytechnic school, but I haveno way of remembering that. They alsoplayed double headers up at Woodruff HighSchool, and those I remember. The Caterpil-lar team played there and believe it or not theyhad bowling tournaments in there as well. Iloved to look at all the army equipment andwhen they had military parades me and mypals would head right for that place and takeit all in. We were amazed by army equipmentand the soldiers with rifles and bayonets.WowI loved the war years, 1941-1945. Fi-nally, in 1950 Bradley moved to RobertsonMemorial up on the Bradley campus. I havehad season tickets since the early 1950s, andgraduated in 1958 from that great school.

A TREMENDOUS HITThe Armory dominated the attention of

Peorians for years. Would you believe thatthey could seat 4,000 to 5,000 people inthere? Most of the seats were bleachers but weloved to scurry upstairs to the fixed seats in the

balcony. We got yelled at a lot but they nev-er really scared us. We just kept moving.

They had rallies of every kind, a ton ofunions, political meetings and a lot of strangegroups that came here for one cause or theother. Lyndon Johnson was there at the Ar-mory in 1964, and a bunch of other politi-cians trying to get one vote or the other. Wenever paid any attention to themwe werethere to watch the excitement not a bunch ofpoliticians lying to all of us. I rarely had anymoney so if I could not sneak in sometimeswe just stood around outside and listened. They had a lot of great bands in that place andsome of them played for really fancy dressballs. I was just a little poor kid that was luckyto have a pair of shoes, let alone a fancy suitand tie. I did get to see Spike Jones, thanks tomy sister, and my brothers took me to a fewspecial things. Eleanor Roosevelt spoke therebefore Pearl Harbor, but I surely did not haveany interest in her. I liked that little dog theyhad but thats about it. I dont remember thisbut Eddie Cantor originated a radio showfrom the Armory once, and that got a lot ofpublicity. The Armory was an amazing placeand as the years went on it grew old just likethe rest of us.

The Army stopped using it and went out toan area near the Bell Wood Nursing Homeand built another building for The Army Re-

serves. That just about did in the Armory andsoon it too was on the ropes. The UnitedStates Navy was supposed to move in there, but they never did. Peorians were surprisedwhen money was spent in 1975 on the interi-or and folks thought that the Armory was go-ing to make a comeback. But, alas the old girlgot older and older and then we heard that aman named Huber bought the place. I grewup with a Dick Huber, and we all had hopesthat something good would come of it. Iheard that the leaders of The Taft Homeswere against whatever it was he hadplannedand that fell through. Then achurch bought itsome form of BaptistChurch I believe, and that too never came tofruition. Anyone remember Chase Inger-

sollwasnt he an at-torney? He had someplans and that toonever materialized. Ichecked a long timeago at the RecordersOffice and found thathe was a Trustee.Maybe it was The Ar-mory Plaza LandTrust? I also saw thatthe property had aPreserve and Main-

tain attachment to it and I thought whowould want to buy the place? Could they tearit down? Anyway that is someone elses prob-lem, I just hated to see the big old girl sit thereand die. Buteverything costs a fortune so Ithink that all we have left of the Peoria Ar-mory are memories. Soon, even those of usthat still remember that bright star will begone and like all memoriesjust fade away.

Illinois Conservation Police confiscate shark fin from Chicago restaurant CHICAGO Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police have issued the first citation under a

new state law that took effect January 1, 2013 banning the sale, trade or distribution of shark fins in Illinois. On August 6, Illinois Conservation Police issued a $120 citation to a Chinatown restaurant, Minghin Cui-

sine in the 2100 block of Archer Avenue in Chicago after confirming the restaurant had an authentic sharkfin on display inside.

Conservation Police had received a tip thatthe restaurants online menu listed shark finsoup as an item for sale prior to an onsite in-spection. After being confiscated by Conser-vation Police officers, the shark fin in questionwas authenticated by staff at Chicagos FieldMuseum.

While sharks are not part of our eco-sys-tem in Illinois, it is important that we play ourpart in the conservation and protection ofthese amazing animals, said Illinois Depart-ment of Natural Resources Director MarcMiller.

Illinois became the first non-Pacific state toenact a law that bans the sale, trade, or distri-bution of shark fins when Governor Pat Quinnsigned the legislation last July. The new law isdesigned to help end the killing of sharks fortheir fins and prevent the collapse of sharkpopulations worldwide. Frequently, after asharks fins are cut off for sale or trade, theshark is thrown back into the ocean alive, where it bleeds to death or drowns.

The citation issued in August is the firstsuch citation issued by Illinois ConservationPolice under the new law.

The opening week of the 2012 dove season hasbeen full of action and very productive. I started offthe season on opening day in the most severe heat Ihave ever experienced while hunting. However, even102-degrees did not dampen the spirits of the huntersshooting over the sunflowers at Keith Grahams DoveClub near Carlinville, IL.

Keith runs the foremost dove enterprise in the en-tire Midwest. His member hunters not only enjoy thefinest wing-shooting anywhere, but his overall facili-ties and his attention to detail makes this a down-south style dove hunt right here in the heartland. Hismembers are offered several scheduled hunts per sea-son over his immaculate sunflower fields.

Hunters are delivered to their blinds and picked-upafter the hunt. The hunters are then taken to the birdcleaning station where cold drinks and running watermakes preparing their dove for travel a piece of cake. Also, on the first and last hunt of each season Gra-hams staff provide their hunters with a great cook-out including dove and wild turkey breast.

To become one of the lucky members of Keith Gra-hams Dove Club contact him at 217-825-6552 orcheck-out his web site at www.grahamoutdooradven-tures.com.

On Labor Day evening I accompanied another goodfriend, Luke Terstreip, Sr. to a freshly cut silage field.Luke had done some scouting and we put out a rotat-ing-wing dove decoy and let the birds come to us. Nowit is time to explain the title of this story. For the firsttime in my dove hunting career I saw and killedEurasian Collared Dove.

The very first dove I killed that evening was dramat-ically different from the thousands of mourning dove Ihave taken in my life. First of all it was HUGE. Second-ly it was a very light color, almost beige instead of thedark gray of the dove I am used to. Lastly, the bird hada distinct black ring around the back of its neck. Ithought it was a ring-neck dove.

    Later in the hunt a pair of dove buzzed the silageand I took them both. Both of these birds were also thelarger sub-species that I later learned are actuallycalled Eurasian Collared Dove. The following informa-tion was given to me by Ray Marshalla, a dove expertwith the Illinois Department of Natural Resources;

The Eurasian Collared Dove is not native to the Unit-ed States. It was introduced in Florida in the late1980s. Ray is not sure why or how these birds werereleased in Florida but their range has been movingnorthward at a very steady pace since then. They have

now been documented in 48 states and provinces. The first sightings in the Midwest were in 1997 and

as of the dove census of 2007 Eurasian Collared Dovewere recorded in 77 of Illinois 107 counties. They arecurrently most common in south/central Illinois. These statistics are bound to go up since Marshallatold me studies have shown this doves population candouble every 15-months.

These dove are most commonly found very close totowns or to grain elevators. They have shown no ad-verse effects to native dove so far and are a muchlarger target. They are about 67% larger that morningdove.

Now for the really good news; since these are notnative birds they do not count against your daily dovelimit. You can kill your 15 mourning dove and as manycollared dove as you wish. You must however hunt col-

lared dove using all of the statewide regulations as fornative birds. Also, once you take your 15th mourningdove you must stop shooting. If you wish to stay in thefield to shoot collared dove you must do so withoutkeeping your 15th native bird.

So as you can see there are lots of reasons to getout into the field and scratch-out a limit of dove re-gardless of what they look like or what they are called.Hopefully this information will help you in the field.

Pour Me a WormI was talking to a friend the other day about plas-

tic bait colors, and how they seem to have a domi-nant hue for certain fisheries. Toledo Bend, I haveoften said could be renamed watermelon red if itever changed the reference to the bend in theSabine River after which the reservoir was named.Of course, other bodies of water can be ruled by col-ors from bright white to black and all of the colors inbetween. I think that maybe the only product cate-gory that has more colors than plastic baits may beladies nail polish. Now, the only reason I can makethe comparison is that my dear daughter Lori Bethis heavy into nail art, as well as rainbow hair colorsand wearing clothing that would make a kaleido-scope jealous.

Lori comes by her little quirks honestly, havingCheryl for a Mom. Not that Cheryl has the samefashion sense, but her relationship with plasticbaits spans the chasm between nails and fishhooks.

Our tackle boxes are not unlike anyone else's. Wehave a million baits and use a hundred of them. That kaleidoscope I referred to could be buddieswith the rainbow of plastic that is categorized byfish variety, body type and color. I have got to admitthere have been numerous times that my bride haspulled out some outrageous critter that no manlyman would ever admit to having in his own box, butmay try it once since it is in his brides. The trialobviously comes after the bait has produced fishand big grins. The fish come first followed by grinsat the hands of success. The really BIG grins comewhen I ask her if I could borrow one of her won-derfully effective, fish producing miracle baits.

The little plastic marvels have other benefitsthan catching fish. What could that be? The read-er may ask. Psychological therapy, I answer. AsNSA as my witness, I have taken Cheryl to a baitshop that sells baits in bulk, at a time when she is

sad, or in a bad mood, and watched her transforma-tion as she buries her hands deep into the softgelatinous gobs of bait. When she stops pantingand starts giggling I know that the therapy is work-ing.

Any Yankee knows about the winter time bluesparticularly if there is no hunting season open. Yallknow Cheryl loves to hunt deer and turkey, and thatshe really never got in to waterfowling, so aroundChristmas time she needs a shot in the arm. I gaveher that shot a few Christmases ago when I boughtabout 20 bags of plastic baits and wrapped them alltogether in one package.

My mistake was giving that present to her first. Each got opened as if were a special gift that need-ed to be squeezed, smelled and held to the light inorder not to miss any contrasting metal flake ornuance of color. Our special Christmas lunch wasway late in getting started due to the delay of pres-ent opening brought on by her infatuation withpumpkin seed, watermelon and bubble gum coloredPVC.

Polyvinyl Chloride, PVC, the stuff your plumbingis most likely made from, is the basis of plastic baitsthat starts as a milky colored liquid that has to becooked in order to make a mold that will catch fish. That is according to my friend Rick Cole who hasbecome quite the bait maker in his spare time awayfrom his duties as a probation and parole officer forthe state of Louisiana.

I remember a few years back when Rick wouldcome here to the lake with his daughter Brandi andhis wife Jan and exercised the most important traita fisherman can have; Persistence. It has paid offfor him. He has gone from what, to say the least, was an entry level boat and very few fish, to having

boated nearly a nine pounder and a captaining anew Triton.

Ricks fishing credentials aside, he has pouredsome baits that could not be distinguished from theeight dollar a pack beauties that you have to pick upbefore any fishing trip. He hasnt said this, but I amgoing to liken the bait making process to painting anart piece. You have to learn how to mix your colorsand create a bunch of mistakes before you have a

canvas worthy to hang on your Mothers closet wall. He has gotten beyond the closet wall stage and is

in to some sophisticated baits. He is still in the hob-byist mode but now makes about twenty differentbaits from a small twister tail to large ten and a halfinch ribbon worms, with side trips to lizard, craw-dad and other critter shapes.

Before I talked to Rick about his new avocation, Ifigured that one could make baits for mere pennieson the dollar. Im for sure wrong, because by thetime you buy the molds that range in capacity from1 to 20 pieces per mold, the pigments, sparklythings and attractants the cost is going to be some-where around forty percent of what a brand nameretail price is.

As I have experienced the more durable the plas-tic bait the less it seems to attract fish. Adding anattractant spray, dip or good old WD-40 can im-prove performance, but I am convinced that themouth feel offered by the softer baits wins out. Theaddition during the cooking process, of say undoc-tored salt makes the baits less durable according toRick, but gives the same scent, texture and mouthfeel benefit that you get from those high dollarbaits. He adds garlic oil and other elements such asreflection material and additional colors that can bepoured in a way to mimic the color patterns of thecreepy crawly things he recreates.

If youre looking for a winter time activity, Rickgot his start doing some research on line after hav-ing his interest piqued by a Bassmaster article.Give it a try, and remember fishing refuse is some ofthe most dangerous trash for our wildlife to dealwith. Pleasebe sure youKeep it clean outthere.

    EARLY HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES

By Jason HouserAs a child I

was intro-duced to hunt-ing, morespec i f ica l lysquirrel hunt-ing, at a veryyoung age bymy dad. Thetimes I spentin the woodschasing thesebushytails still hold some of my mostmemorable times as a hunter and as achild.

My shotgun of choice was an oldsingle barrel 20 gauge bought at anauction by my dad for $15. I killedmany squirrels with that shotgun andit is still an excellent small game guntoday.

Eventually I upgraded to aMossberg 500 pump, but I believe thesingle shot made me a better shot anda better, more patient hunter.

Like most kids my age living inrural America hunting and fishingwas a part of our lives from a youngage. Not only did we do it becausewe enjoyed it, but also because it pro-vided much needed food for thetable.

Today I still hunt squirrels. I stillenjoy the taste of the meat, but it is

not a necessity, instead I hunt for theenjoyment of the hunt.

As squirrel season approaches treesare still plentiful of their greenleaves. Hunters who venture outearly in the season will find it diffi-cult to spot the small critters as theyconceal their selves amongst thethickets of the tall trees.

Not only does the thick stand ofleaves make the hunt difficult, but theheat of the day and the abundance ofthe mosquito make it almost unbear-able to many hunters. Squirrels liketo stay in their nest throughout thehot of the day, but for the hunter will-ing to try an early season squirrelhunt there are still plenty of opportu-nities.

As a young hunter full of energy Icould combat all the obstacles of anearly season squirrel hunt, but as Ihave got older, and maybe wiser Ihave come to the realization that thebest time to hunt is from dawn andstay at it for a couple of hours beforeheading ho
