Faringdon Business Breakfast Club

"How do you describe the detached building at thebottom of the garden where one spends the working daytrying to make a living. It is more than a mere shed, but it isless grand than an office - maybe it is a "Shoffice"?!  How isit treated for tax purposes?  This was one of the manyquestions that the  Faringdon Business Breakfast Clubreflected on before being entertained with a multi-mediapresentation from club member Sarah Benson of PerryBishop & Chambers extolling the benefits and achievementsof our local rotary organisations which are active acrossmany age-groups and are delivering amazing projectsworldwide.  There was even a picture of our very owncommittee member, Paul Brame, puffing his way round therecent Buscot fun run, just one of the many fundraisers thatthe Faringdon Rotary help to facilitate.  In August, FBBC willmeet on Monday 4th at Sudbury House hotel and aftereveryone has introduced themselves  there will be anopportunity for three 1-2-1 sessions with other members - itis always a popular meeting.  For more details go tohttp://www.fbbc-networking.co.uk/"

Welcome to another month; beautiful weather, brief but heavy rain, and the roses and brambles have taken over thehedgerows as small apples and berries slowly grow and ripen. For some of us lucky enough, the air is full of summer scentsbuddleia, mock orange, honeysuckle and “lime” trees…the bees are busy everywhere and butterflies are emerging andhopefully will have a good breeding season.

“Tree bumblebee branches out” headlines my Butterfly Conservation Trust e-News – this is one bee thatI’ve never heard of before, and forgive me, I’m really excited, since this species is showing strongerresistance to UK parasitic diseases than native bumblebees! So, while many bee species are declining, Tree bumblebees are bucking the trend by branching out furtheracross the UK. Originally from mainland Europe, the Tree bumblebee (Bombus hypnorum) was first seenin the UK in 2001 and is now found in most of England and Wales. It reached southern Scotland last yearwith the first recorded sighting in East Dunbartonshire in June 2013. New sightings this year show thisdistinctive species - with its reddish brown thorax, black abdomen and white tail - has now spreadeastwards across Scotland into Edinburgh and East Lothian.

BOVINE TB – always in the news and always a worry for the livestock-keeping farmingcommunity. A community where the industry has too many cases of fatal injury (38 in the2012/2013 HSE report) or serious bodily injury (375 in the same period) across the whole sector- even more worrying if there’s a tradesman or farm worker completely on their own, in theyards or out in the fields and woodlands. These statistics include forestry workers, treesurgeons, horticultural workers and other agriculture-allied trades and activities. For thefarming sector alone, 29 fatalities and 1 in 5 of all fatal injuries to ALL UK workers. The stats,at over 53% more than in the construction industry, confirms that farming is one of the mostdangerous professions. The HSE also points out that the proportion of injuries actually being reported in agricultureis low, so the actual rate is likely to be much higher. The most common types of injuries seenin agriculture are a result of contact with moving machinery (such as unguarded or faulty-

guarded power take-off shafts, PTOs), injury from moving vehicles (including reversing) and farm livestock. So, back to TB – there is very strong indications that social science can contribute a great deal to the TB debate, where farmerand public attitudes have a significant impact on how disease control measures are implemented. If attitudes and behavioursare better understood, more common ground regarding biosecurity, disease surveillance and any controls on wildlife may befound. We are dealing with a social problem. It’s also been clearly demonstrated by the Cymorth TB Project in Wales that local veterinary surgeons, trusted by their clientfarmers, have a pivotal role in helping farmers to control bovine TB as well as other diseases. Vets will bridge the gap betweenpolicymakers and farmers as well as their non-farming clients.

MISSION RABIES, in their next phase in and around Goa, Southern India, has achieved the neutering of8000 dogs in 11 weeks but still picking up 2 to 3 proven-rabid dogs per week. But then, (BIG stats!) todate in 305 days, 97,536 dogs have been vaccinated against Rabies, total dogs neutered across theregion 13,870 and 76,850 school children spoken to. The MR Team plan to visit 80 schools across theregion to raise Mission Rabies awareness even more. So, the MR mission statement “ Across the World, 100 children die every day from Rabies and we’regoing to change that” is truly becoming a reality. MR will be launching projects in other countries butdespite UK business and personal donations, and those across the World, there is always the stickyquestion of raising money for future work. You may like to visit the MR website http://www.missionrabies.com and see if you can help.Thank you!

Remember the e-petition to end non-stun slaughter and promote animal welfare?…It has received more than 10 000 signatures, allowing the relevant Government department to provided the followingresponse:The Government encourages the highest standards of welfare at slaughter and would prefer to see all animals stunned beforethey are slaughtered for food….The Government is aware that there is public concern about meat from animals slaughteredin accordance with religious beliefs being sold to consumers who do not require their meat to be prepared in this way. TheGovernment believes that consumers should have the necessary information available to them to make an informed choiceabout their food. We are awaiting the results of a European Commission study on method-of-slaughter labelling which is duethis summer. We will look at possible options in light of that report. This e-petition remains open to signatures and will be considered for debate by the Backbench Business Committee should itpass the 100000 signature threshold.Sign this petition : https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/64331/signature/new70,630 signatures and rising as I write. Closing date: 28/04/2015 10:59. Thank you.

Thank you also for your company this month, enjoy the summer – it will be Show-time very soon!

Sweetcorn!

Sweet summer. There are some things that really should only be eaten inseason from the UK. Fresh peas, strawberries, summercurrants and of course, corn on the cob. I know it's a bit of acliche but a barbecue just is not complete without jugglingthe heat on your fingertips of those yellow beauties withcopious amounts of butter dribbling down your chin!Sweetcorn originates in America and still populates many oftheir recipes. Breads and cakes, creamed as a vegetable orindeed popcorn! It is maize but is a variety that containsmore sugars. It is then harvested when the plant is muchyounger, therefore softer. But the sugars are retained givingthat lovely sweet taste we all know and love. This youngharvesting is called the milk stage and I think this is a logicalname if you think of the milky substance that is producedwhen you cut a raw cob.Something that I find extraordinary is that when sweetcornwas canned, it used to always be packed with salt and sugar. Now fortunately, it's possible to buy it straight. A goodsweetcorn really doesn't need much help along taste route. But a fresh sweetcorn holds many possibilities, on the cob orcooked in to a recipe. I love to make a dish called succotashwhich is a brilliant accompaniment to grilled meats, fish orsausages. Just soften onion and garlic until tender, add equalquantities of sweetcorn kernels and butter beans then pourin double cream to just cover. Season and then simmer foraround 5 minutes. Finish with chopped parsley and coriander. On the barbecue they come in to their own. Wrap rawsweetcorn in foil with a knob of butter then cook over thecoals for 20 minutes. Or char them after cooking in water.Just don't burn the roof of your mouth in the excitement.Often I speak with people who wouldn't think about usingsweetcorn cut from a cob. It can be a messy but incrediblysatisfying job shaving the kernels from the cob! And thetaste is comparable to eating a pea from the pod.Why not try making a salsa, perfect to go with those tasty PatThomas burgers. And actually, if you have a sweetcorn leftover from a barbecue, it's a great recipe to use up theremainders.Shave the kernels from 2 cooked sweetcorn. Finely chop 1/2a red onion, a sweet red pepper and 1/2 finely chopped fatred chili. Mix everything together with the juice and zest ofa lime, 3 tbsp chopped coriander and generous seasoning.Serve with your barbie and a glass of something chilled!

Dinosaurs, aliens and the shop that sells everythingBy Duncan SaundersGhostly Publishing

Fantasy comes to FaringdonDinosaurs, aliens and the shop that sells everything is a story like no other, though to many, it should seemquite familiar. In his first novel, local author, Duncan Saunders, has created a magical world full of themost fantastic surprises. When the novel’s hero, Gordon , takes his first job in a department store he thinks his time there will bequite mundane, but this soon turns out not to be the case. As well as everything you would possibly findin your local M&S, “Dr Melchior’s Emporium of Magnificence” sells a whole lot more, and yes, dinosaurs

and aliens do feature on the annual stock take!As Gordon is introduced to every department he is thrown into the workings of each, sometimes literally, and comes upagainst some hair-raising adventures, as well as meeting a horde of the most unlikely customers.I had a chance to chat to the author to find out his inspiration and what he would like the reader to take from the book. This is your first novel, how did the idea come to you?Back in the early 1990’s, I used to work in Carters (now Budgens). It was there that I first had the idea for the book; stackingshelves gave me plenty of time to think and come up with ideas! While the characters are fictional, there are some similarities, and I hope my light hearted tribute to Carters shows the affection I have for those days. Certainly, it did feel like it soldeverything, and I’m sure that had they been able to source dinosaur eggs, Carters would’ve sold them. The adventures in the book seem so exciting, yet so 'run-of the mill' - how did you get that balance? The mix is deliberate; the incredible seems so much more so if it is placed next to the everyday. To me, the idea of finding adinosaur is amazing, but the idea that someone might be keeping dinosaurs behind a high wall just up the road, is even moreamazing. Books where the mundane and magical exist side by side have always appealed to me. The balance is a key part ofthe story. To me the book reminds me of a Roald Dahl adventure, did these books influence you at all?I grew up reading Roald Dahl and still love his books. I was lucky enough to meet him when he was the guest of honour at anevent in a little bookshop in Faringdon in the 1980’s. I remember him being very tall, folded up behind a little table very muchlike the BFG. He signed my tatty old copy of James and the Giant Peach. Any comparison to a master storyteller like him isextremely flattering and I can’t think that I deserve it!It is easy to place yourself in the countryside while reading the novel - where did you picture the shop when you were writing thebook?Like Carters, it was in the middle of a town very much like Faringdon. I wanted to get the mix of technology and wildness, which is why there are several scenes set in very remote places. I suppose it’s a bit like the title; there’s the wildness of thedinosaurs mixed with the advanced technological prowess of the aliens. It all has to come together to make the story work.Who would you like your book to be aimed at?It’s aimed at me! I tend to write things I’d like to read, as that way there’s bound to be at least one person who enjoys readingit. More widely, I’d say it’s aimed at older children, and those who enjoy reading escapist fantasy novels. Several adults havetold me how much they enjoyed it. I suppose, if you read the title and think that you might like it, you probably will.Have you found that dinosaur yet - and are Ankylosaurs your favourite type of dinosaur?Sadly not, though I’ll keep looking; and they are, although I like most types of dinosaur as long as they’re at a safe distance! Idon’t think I’ll be able to get a real dinosaur for the book launch, but I’m hoping it’ll be exciting nevertheless!

Duncan is launching his book at an event in Faringdon on Saturday, August 9th at Folly Tower, between 1.00 and 3.00pm.

Oxfordshire Befriending for Life (OxBEL) Volunteers whooffer friendship and support.

We could all use a friend who will listen and be there for usduring  challenging  times. And this can be especially so if youare living with a serious illness and may not have long left tolive. Some people in this situation say they find it impossible to

“open up” to close family members because this would addto their distress. All too often, old friends suddenly dropaway, become clumsy and unhelpful in their approach.Health professionals are fantastic but they may not have thetime to sit and listen to what may really be worrying theirpatient, especially if such worries are not primarily medicalones. Or sometimes   people just want to regain somenormality and enjoy some social time where they just  talkabout ordinary, everyday things.

Oxfordshire Befriending for Life (OxBEL) was set up toprovide crucial emotional and social support to anyone whois living with a life threatening condition and to their families.OxBeL’s  trained volunteers visit  or call each week  for a chat,to listen and to share interests and companionship, toorganise trips out or help with minor tasks.  Vivien who usesthe befriending service said recently:  “Oh I think it’s a  lifesaver. I would be just … lost, absolutely lost without it. Idon’t know what I’d do really.”

Such choice! One thing that I adore most about the world of wine is thesimple fact that it offers an endless realm of choice. Thevariety of wines available commercially is massive. Theexpanse of aroma and flavour profiles, styles and variationfrom one region to the next dissolves the remotestinclination of boredom. One of life’s pleasures would have to be, the discovery ofsomething new. When applied to wine, I always get a thrill out of a ‘new’ find.Have you ever heard of Picpoul de Pinet?According to the producer Gérard Bertrand (LanguedocRoussillon, Southern France), the region of Picpoul de Pinetis one of the earliest civilized places on earth and has been awine making area for over 2000 years. The village of Pinet is situated near Thau where the noblegrape known as Piquepoule was first thought to be grownand which in turn gave the name to the wine known today asPicpoul de Pinet – a wine produced from the limestone soilsof the Mediterranean and the celebrated southern Frenchsun.Piquepoul (aka) Picpoul de Pinet comes in three differentberry colours – noir, gris and blanc. Its high aciditylends itself to being a perfect blending partner, addingfreshness to Languedoc whites and it is permitted inthe extensive blend of Chateauneuf du Pape. However,as a varietal, it shines in its home turf. The white wines are generally lemon scented, sometimes floral. They are crisp in acidity and finishdry, making them a great partner with a range ofcuisines.Available locally:Gérard BertrandPicpoul de Pinet 2013£9.99 Den Boer WinesCitrus on the nose, with a hint of honeysuckle andpeach. The palate delivers refreshing citrusflavours of grapefruit and limes, with subtlehoneydew melon and lychees. The finish is dry andfresh.Best enjoyed young and served at 8°C with shellfish, grilled fish or Mediterranean salads.

SHRIVENHAM VILLAGE FETE LOOKS SETTO BE THE BIGGEST AND BEST YETThis year’s Shrivenham Village Fete, taking place onSaturday 23rd August 2014, looks set to be the biggestto date.

Shrivenham Rec will play host to the largest number offamily attractions, retail stalls, car boot vendors andactivities in the fete’s 35 year history.

Dave Branscombe, Chairman of Shrivenham FeteCommittee, explained: "We are very excited about thisyear’s Shrivenham Fete. Hopefully everyone passingthrough the village, as a result of the A420 trafficdiversions, will also drop by to join us. We’ve got somegreat animal attractions including falconry, reptiles andworking dog displays – alongside the familiar familyattractions, fairground rides, retail stalls and car bootsales.

“There will be a large selection of food and drink outletsthis year, offering a broad range of choices; fromCrepes and Churros to Falafel, Jerk Chicken, Indiancuisine and a hog roast! I’d like to encourage everyoneto join us and to bring the whole family.”

Shrivenham Village Fete commences at 13:00 onSaturday 23rd August at Shrivenham Recreation Ground.Entry to the fete is completely free and moreinformation and a full list of attractions be found byvisiting www.shrivenhamfete.co.uk orwww.facebook.com/ShrivenhamVillageFete

1000Lets Talk about Whisky

One great option for enjoying whisky in summer is to use it in acocktail and in recent times there has been a renewed interest incocktails that has brought with it an appreciation of the versatilityand complexity that whisky can bring to mixed drinks. Cocktailmaking equipment is becoming increasingly sophisticated but forthe home cocktail maker the simple methods of build, stir orshake are more than adequate to produce some deliciouslydifferent drinks and, as Bruce and Enrico of Eaux de Vie recentlydemonstrated to us, it’s not difficult to create your own fabulousconcoctions so here’s some recipes to have a go at.

Blood & Sand One of my favourites packedfull of flavourTake 20ml Great King Street Artists' Blend,20ml Cherry Heering, 20ml Fresh OrangeJuice & 15ml Akashi-tai Shiraume Umeshu(plum infused sake – amazingly rich anddecadent!). Place all ingredients in acocktail shaker with ice, shake, then straininto a glass. Squeeze oil from twist oforange peel over drink & place twist in drink.

ManhattanLight and zingy, perfect for a hotsummer’s eveningStir 50ml Nikka Coffey Grain, 20mlSweet vermouth & 2 drops ofAngostura Bitters in a jug with ice.Strain. Squeeze oil from twist oforange peel over drink & place twist indrink.

Swedish Martini If 007 was Swedish this iswhat he would drink…Stir 40ml Mackmyra Bruks Swedish Single Malt,10ml Briottet Crème de Peche, 10ml GutierrezColosia Fino del Puerto & 1 drop of OrangeBitters in a jug with ice. Strain. Rub oil fromtwist of lemon peel round rim of glass. Placetwist in drink.Top tips of the evening were:1) Most cocktails can be prepared in advance, bottled and storedin the fridge. Ideal for parties or so that you have a refreshingdrink available when you get in from work!2) You don’t have to stick exactly to the letter of the recipe.Experiment and make it to your own taste.Remember, whisky doesn’t always have to be a straight singlemalt, when mixed with the right ingredients the whole can bebetter than the sum of the parts – so go shake those shakers!

Are you feeling run down and on top of that, you feel a cold sorecoming on?…

This familiar tingling on the lip, accompanied sometimes by swollenlymph glands under the lower jaw or on the neck. Something wecertainly can do without. Intense sunshine or even a sip from anunclean glass (revulsion and disgust can incapacitate the immunesystem) can trigger them, or an existing infection somewhere inthe body. Infections or inflammations require our immune systems’full attention – thus depriving it of its abilities to fight otherinvaders. Therefore, the Herpes Virus has an easy time.Stress can also facilitate the outbreak of the unwanted blisters –although the warm weather and sunshine are often associatedwith relaxation, many of us are planning their well-deservedsummer holidays somewhere nice. However, before we finally canembark on the journey, our nerves are on edge: unfinished chores, suitcases to pack, wrong or cancelled travelling timetables or amissed bus to the airport can inhibit mental and physical immunedefence. For some of us, even thinking out it can affect the immunesystem in a negative way.Diet sometimes plays an important role – the amino acid Arginineaids the reproduction and growth of the Herpes Virus. Foods highin Arginine are chocolate, carob, nuts, wheat, meat, dairy, gelatine, meat (mainly chicken, beef and pork) and coconut. Coffee can alsoincrease the flare-up of cold sores.Do you suffer from regular outbreaks of cold sores and tend to biteyour fingernails? In that case, you might have a calcium deficiency.Research has shown that those who regularly suffer from coldsores are low in Vitamin B12. So, adding 250 mcg of Vitamin B12 as adaily dosage – preferably in a good Vitamin-B-Complex, togetherwith Folic Acid – can prevent the onset of the sores.Dabbing a bit of toothpaste on the spot (preferably over night) andlet it dry in can be an effective first aid. Some sufferers swear byapplying a drop of their urine – but this is certainly not everyone’scup of tea. Propolis, one of Nature’s antiseptics – applied up to 5times a day, can reduce healing time and pain intensity, especiallywhen applied at the first tingle. When you are prone to cold sores, boosting the immune system isnecessary. Lots of vitamins and a healthy diet will help. Additionally,a good Echinacea remedy will help the immune defence.Hypericum – better known as St. John’s Wort – can help to combatthe viral infection, e.g. the Herpes Simplex Virus which isresponsible for cold sores, and general nerve pain. It can also helpto relax and lift you up when you are feeling low. Hypericum, however, may interfere with certain other medication, so pleaseconsult your GP or pharmacist before using it.The Herpes virus attaches itself to the top end of the nerves and canlie dormant in the body for a long time. As mentioned above, it canbe triggered by a number of factors: Stress, fever, menstruation, drugs, alcohol and nicotine, to name a few. Spagyric Medicine anatural method of health care based on medicinal plants offers veryeffective remedies which can eliminate the virus active or dormantfor good.
