LYMPHEDEMA is the accumulation ofa protein rich lymph fluid which typicallygets trapped between the skin and themuscle with the connective tissues dueto a dysfunctional operating lymphaticsystem. Most commonly noted in theextremities, with one extremity being largerthan the other. Lymphedema can, however, occur in the groin, head andtrunk. Lymphedema has multiple causes, primary or congenital (being born with thedisease). Secondary lymphedema is dueto injury/damage as a result of cancer and or cancertreatments, surgeries, tumors, thermal burns, and repeatedinfections such as cellulitis to name a few. Lymphedema has four stages; ranging from latency, meaning the individual shows no signs but is at risk due tofactors listed previously; reversible stage, the limbdemonstrates pitting edema but may spontaneously subsidewith treatment; irreversible stage, limb size has increasedand the edema is nonpitting with skin that has become thicker/fibrosis; lymphostatic elephantiasis, limb size has continuedto increase, skin is fibrotic with an orange peel effect, andrecurrent cellulitis infections are common. There is currently no cure for lymphedema. However, once diagnosed with Lymphedema by a physician, the nextstep is to seek out a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT). Treatment for lymphedema includes patient educationand Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includesmanual lymph drainage (MLD) techniques to activate workinglymphnodes and open lymphatic fluid pathways followed byapplication of mechanical compression bandages to controland reduce the amount of fluid in the limb. Upon completionof CDT, the patient should be independent with self-MLDand compression bandage and/or compression garmentapplication for ongoing management.

It is with deepest sadness that I announce that Justin Schultz, our Town’s

Planning Board Chairman, passed away on May 2, 2013. Justin served on

the Planning Board for over two decades. He worked tirelessly to serve

the people of our community and received recognition from the NYS

Planning Federation for his efforts. There is no doubt that Justin gave

generously to the Town. He had a wealth of knowledge related to many

Town projects and will be sorely missed. We extend our condolences to

his family and friends.

The following are highlights from the May 8, 2013 meeting ofthe Sand Lake Town Board:• Area Break-Ins – Sand Lake has experienced some recentarea burglaries. State Police are asking residents to be vigilant– lock your doors and windows and speak to your neighbors toensure awareness. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, report all suspicious activity, people or vehicles to the StatePolice.• Public Hearings Held– A public hearing was held to consideradoption of an ordinance to provide rules for good order andsafety at the Glass Lake Fishing Access Area. The secondpublic hearing was held on NYS Real Property Tax Law 485b toclarify that the Town offers this partial exemption forbusinesses.• Acceptance of MS4 Annual Report – The Town Boardaccepted the draft Annual MS4 Report as final and will submitthis report to the Department of Environmental Conservation. This report is required by the State and reports our Town’sefforts to protect and improve the water quality of our streamsand water bodies.• West Fall Village – Referral – The Board referred plansfor a mixed use building and property owners’ pool and changingrooms at Westfall Village to the Planning Board. The PlanningBoard will report their findings within 45 days.• Acceptance – Insurance Settlement – The windstormof December 21, 2012 destroyed the Town’s stage at ButlerPark. A subsequent claim was made to the Town’s insurancecarrier and the Board voted to accept the offer of $20,255.51as the fair and actual replacement value of the stage. The next Town Board Workshop is Wednesday, May29, 2013, at 7:30 pm; and the next Town BoardMeeting is on June 12, 2013 at 7:30 pm at the SandLake Town Hall. Please feel free to contact me with anyquestions, ideas or concerns – 674-2026 ext. 12 [email protected].

APCSD ANNUAL SCHOOL VOTE

Dear Averill Park Residents, Tuesday, May 21, is our annualschool vote. Our goal continues to be to provide the besteducation for our students during these unprecedentedeconomic times. There are three areas on which to vote: I. School Budget - For the fourth consecutive year, thebudget is reduced from the prior year. Although a smallreduction, it is based upon the amount of state aid receivedand the limited by the district’s tax levy cap; II. Capital Improvement Project - There are no “exciting”areas for this project; it is primarily improvements ininfrastructure with two large-ticket items; needed technologyinfrastructure and high school auditorium improvements; III. Board of Education Seats - We have three candidatesrunning for the three open seats. Shawn Morgan, StuartNippes, and Peter Schaefer. Peter is running for his secondterm and Shawn and Stuart will be first term appointees. You should have received a mailing this week regarding thevote. The mailing provides information on all three of the voteareas. Please review the mailing as well at the district website.Information can be found under the Budget Corner called“Budget Information at Your Fingertips.”If you don’t see the answer you are looking for, feel free tocontact me at [email protected]. I will be happyto provide the answer you need. Finally, I encourage you to vote on May 21. It is easy to brushit aside and not worry about it, but it is critical for the voices ofthe entire community to be heard. The polls will be open from 7:00 AM until 9:00 PM in the HSauxiliary gym. Exit surveys will also be available for you toshare your insight. I hope to see you there!~ Superintendent Hoffman and the Board of Education

Averill Park spring sports are finishing off their regular seasonswith a bang, and going into the post-season as prepared aspossible. Girl’s lacrosse, softball, and boy’s baseball and tennisall came through with some great wins this week.Averill Park girl’s lacrosse began to wrap up their season thispast week with games against Bethlehem and Colonie. OnWednesday, the girls traveled to Bethlehem and representedtheir home school well, though Bethlehem was too much for theWarriors. AP lost 13-6. Top scorers for Averill Park were CaitlinO’Shea, with 2 goals, and Sofi Sorriento, with 2 as well. Thenon Friday, the Warriors hosted Colonie. The ladies were notready to surrender to another large school team; Averill Parkplayed with precision and teamwork as they took the win overColonie, 14-6. The main goal scorers were: Morgan Lionarons(5), and Sofi Sorriento (2). The ladies have their last game nextweek on Tuesday.I will let you know more about Track and Field recent competitionsin next week’s article. The Softball team played against Bethlehem on Tuesday 5/7.The match went for extra innings, and finally ended with agreat win from Averill Park, 2-1. Following the exhaustingTuesday afternoon game, Averill Park hosted Colonie onThursday. In the highly anticipated game, both teams foughthard and the game came down to the wire, but unfortunately,AP fell short this time, 9-8. Finally, on Saturday, Averill Parkplayed Troy, and sadly lost again, 8-2. AP’s baseball startedtheir week of sports on Tuesday against Bethlehem. The boy’sunfortunately, lost, but the boys earned back some redemptionby beating Colonie on Thursday, 13-7. On Saturday, AP tookon Catholic High, and unfortunately, fell short, 5-4. Both baseballand softball have their last games of the regular season nextweek; good luck to both teams, and finish the season off strong! Also, congratulations to the boy’s tennis team. Last week, APtennis entered sectionals and brought away a win against CBA4-3 in the opening round. The team was aided in their win byMatt Reasor and Eric Bush, who both won their matches instraight sets. Brian Scherer also won in straight sets over hisopponent. The match was clinched when Nate Glanton cameback to win a tie-break in the second set, and then won a longbattle in the 3rd set. The team will face Burnt Hills, the defendingSection A Champs, in the second round of Sectionals.Next week will wrap up the regular season, so make sure tocome and support the seniors and their teams as they playsome of their last high school games. As a heads up, on Monday,May 20th, modified sports will be holding a “Game Day.” All threemodified spring teams will play on the Algonquin fields @ 4:15 inactive support of modified sports, which are in danger of beingcut next year. If you have any questions, or comments, feelfree to contact me at [email protected].

It can be rare to find an athlete with the dedication to theirteam and the academic achievement that senior Megan Colemanhas. Megan has been playing lacrosse since seventh grade. She chose lacrosse because it wasn’t a very popular sport, soshe wanted to see what it was like. Turns out, she absolutelyloved it and it has been a major part of her life ever since.Coleman is currently an attack player, but she has playeddefense in the past. Her favorite part of playing is just beingpart of the team. She has played with the same girls for manyyears now, and they have all become really close; so theyreally look forward to seeing each other every day. During theoff season, Coleman spends about three of four days a weekconditioning and practicing her skills. She has played for outsideleagues and also participated in before/after school get-togethers for anyone who wants to play lacrosse. During theseason, she practices hard every day after school with theteam in preparation for the intense games to come. Megantakes games very seriously, because it’s her chance to showoff all her hard work and compete for a win. Coleman alsotakes her time at school very seriously. She has always had anoutstanding academic record and works hard every day tokeep it that way. This year she is taking Advanced PlacementGovernment and Advanced Placement Biology. Both classesare a lot of work, but Megan really likes to challenge herself. She is also taking statistics, which is fun because she enjoysmath. In the future, she plans to major in Biology and eventuallybecome a Veterinarian because of her love for animals. With allthe time Megan spends preparing for her next lacrosse gameor studying for her Biology exam, it’s hard to imagine that shehas much free time on her hands. When she does, however,Coleman likes to get involved with the community. She hasvolunteered at Albany Medical Center numerous times, andshe is also very involved with her church, St. Henry’s. Megan’sfamily has been her main source of inspiration over the years.“I have always been taught to be myself, help others, and befriends with everyone,” says Coleman. Her family has taughther these important lessons, and have always been there tosupport her. She would like to thank her parents for her success, because they have always pushed her to try harder. She wouldalso like to take time to thank her coaches who have helped herunderstand the game and improve her skills over the years.“Being given the honor to be a scholar athlete is really importantto me, because I have always tried hard in school and I havealways been athletic,” says the athlete. Coleman has absolutelyloved her time playing lacrosse over the years. “It has taughtme how to be part of a team, how to be a leader, and muchmore than just playing the sport.” We wish Megan the best ofluck in the future!

It’s now up to you! by Ronald Berti

Ronald can be reached at: [email protected]

Two weeks ago, the Committee to Create a Community Center From the OldSchool Building published a position paper. Everywhere I go in Town the reactionhas been very positive. Residents come up to me with quiet praise for our work anda sincere desire that we can convince our elected representatives to work together tomake this dream a reality. They not only have identified themselves as Town residents, but as members ofpotential user groups for the Community Center. But herein lies the problem. While as individualsthey have vocalized their support for the project; it has not yet coalesced into a sustained and unifiedmovement representing their organizations. I have urged these people to become more vocal withintheir clubs to formalize their support. This endeavor on the part of the Committee not only seeks to create, centralize and expand avenue for Community Activities, but also seeks to preserve for the future a building that has greathistorical significance for thousands of former students who have passed through its hallowed halls.Furthermore, this building is an architectural beauty set upon a plain of green splendor. It would bea shame if this building went the way of St. Patrick’s Church in Watervliet and succumbed to thewrecker’s ball, to a heap of rubble. We are losing too many of our Landmarks in this country. There are now gaps in our history astold in the progression of our buildings. The terminal for the Troy & New England Railway is nolonger recognizable. The Glass Factory is gone. The mills that brought fame and prosperity to SandLake are crumbling. Is the School going to go the same way and fade into the mists of time and thememories of its graduates? Let us give the School a re-birth of usefulness, value, convenience and practicality. Let it bemany things for many people: Child Care Center; Youth Group Center; Library; Town Hall; ElderCare Center; a place for Social Groups such as the Garden Club, Kiwanis, Historical Society,Scouts, Athletic Leagues and others to gather and enjoy. The Committee has taken us to a hilltop from which we can see into the future. But for that insightand for that knowledge, our elected officials must commit to working for the benefit of all residents aspart of the vision of the future. However, we can only do so much. It is now up to you , my fellowresidents, to express your opinion to your elected officials. This is a Public Building and it will be apolitical decision, hopefully non-partisan, to either save or abandon the School. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm and the willingness to confront greatchallenges. Remember, if St. George had killed a dragonfly instead of a dragon, who would

remember him?

QUESTION: Sometimes I just can’t control all the stressfulthoughts in my mind. Can meditation help?

N. Nyman, Stephentown, NYANSWER: The quick answer is yes. But first, imagine you areliving two thousand years ago. You’ve just traveled a greatdistance to visit a friend who lives in the walled city of Jerusalem. As you approach the main Damascus Gate, you are met by asentry who requires you to present your identity papers, announce the purpose and length of your stay, identify theindividual you intend to visit, and prove that you have sufficientmoney for the return trip home. If you fail to fulfill any one ofthese requirements, you will not be allowed entry into the cityand your journey will have been a painful waste. Every day asimilar scenario takes place––at the main gate that leads intoyour mind. Did you know that your mind processes about 60,000entry requests from thoughts every day? With 86,400 secondsin a 24 hour period, your mind will grant entry to a visitingthought every 1.2 seconds––and 95 percent of those thoughtswill be the same ones you gave a free pass to yesterday. Formost people, virtually any thought that seeks entry into themind is instantly granted admission. First come strayobservations about our immediate surroundings, then oldmemories and an expectation for the future, a melody from afavorite song, worries about money, physical sensations, pettyjealousies, resentments and a craving for something to eat--––all in less than a minute! Most of our thoughts don’t appearterribly harmful on the surface, but because many representunconscious fears, anger and desires that conflict with ourown inner wisdom, they eventually make it impossible for us toexperience health, happiness and security. Without controlover the mind, our habitual thoughts can sap our will, vitalityand optimism, cause insomnia and even bring about seriousphysical ailments. But meditation changes our stress intostrength by training the mind to skillfully deal with this enormousvolume of mental traffic. With the tools of detachment, discrimination and will power learned in meditation, we candirect our thoughts as effectively as a New York City policemandirects automobile traffic through Times Square. Our health, happiness and security can be positively influenced by howskillfully we direct our thoughts. And once you practicemeditation every day for just 5 minutes, this skill can becomeas easy and enjoyable as driving your car in the country on abeautiful Sunday afternoon. The meditation curriculum at the American Meditation Institute isaccredited by the American Medical Association, Albany MedicalCollege and the N.Y.S. Nurses Association. It is also endorsed bynationally recognized physicians Dr. Oz, Dean Ornish MD and BernieSiegel MD.
