ST. JUDE’S 2012 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD HONOREESSt. Jude the Apostle Roman Catholic Church and School are proud to announce the 2012 St. Jude theApostle Community Service Award Honorees - Alson Spain Sr. and Johanna Flanigan.

Alson Spain Sr. graduated from Lansingburgh High School in 1941 and in 1942, at thebeginning of WWII, he was accepted into Flight School in the Air Force, and earned hiswings in July 1943.He returned to Troy after the war. He enrolled in Russell Sage College. Soon he met hiswife, Harriet Holcomb.Al was one of the founding members of St. Jude Parish. He and a number of other menin Wynantskill formed the Knights of St. Jude; planning the construction of the Churchand School, along with the first Pastor, Rev. Thomas Tooher. They raised moneythrough the St. Jude Horse Show.

Al became the 4th Grade teacher at the School, and on Sunday mornings, he drove the school bus tothe Snyder’s Lake area to bring those without cars to Church. He earned his Master’s degree inEducation from St. Rose College while teaching at School 5 in Troy.Harriet and Al continued to live in Wynantskill, and sent their three children to St. Jude School. All sixof their grandchildren attended St. Jude School, and Al continues to be an active parishioner, attendingdaily mass at 90 years young.

Johanna Flanigan began her nursing career at Albany Medical Center School ofNursing where she met her husband Vince.Jo became involved in EMS in 1970 in the North Greenbush Ambulance, holdingevery office except treasurer. She became involved in EMS training, as a CPRInstructor and NYS EMT Instructor. In 1981, Jo became Nurse Manager of theAlbany Medical Center Emergency Department becoming Employee of the Year in1988. In 1986, Jo was elected Rensselaer County EMS Coordinator. In June 1987,through Jo’s efforts, the Reduce Emergency Stress Team began serving the needsof Emergency Service Agencies from Rensselaer County. Jo was Chairman of theRegional Emergency Medical Organization in 1986 and became a REMOrepresentative on the NYS EMS Council. In 2011, Jo chaired the State Council

during the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers. In 2003, Jo became the High School Nurse at the AverillPark High School.In 2005, Jo became the Parish Nurse at St. Jude Church, heading up the Home Visitation program. Joserved on the Pastoral Council for 10yrs as Chairperson for 2 years. She now Chairs the Annual PastaDinner, is Recording Secretary for the Rosary Altar Society and serves on the Evangelization andChristian Service Committees.

FESTIVAL PREPARATIONS IN

EAST GREENBUSH

Town Historian Waldi Cavanaugh, with Phyllis Frey, Chris Roeder(rear), Jane Harvey, Tina Greenfield, and Jean Dupuis (front)show off their progress in hand painting soldiers for theCantonment Festival in East Greenbush.On May 20th, a festival in observance of the 200th Anniversaryof The War of 1812, will begin in East Greenbush. The projecthas been in the works for well over a year, under the directionof Town Historian Waldi Cavanaugh. East Greenbush was thesite of a large and important military encampment called aCantonment during that War, when the British attempted torecapture our young nation. The Cantonment stood on theground now occupied by Red Mill School, and one original buildingstill remains as a private residence.Ms. Cavanaugh has drawn upon the talents and time of manypeople and organizations for assistance. Volunteers from the“Capitolers” a regional decorative painting group, are finishingup some impressive work in Town Hall. The group is painting acadre of life-sized wooden soldiers with faces and detailedmilitary uniforms typical of the historic period. On May 20th,

the soldiers will be on displayat the Red Mill site, along withdiorama or miniature model ofthe original Cantonmentbuildings, i l lustrating thelayout of the encampment.Plans are underway for morecommemorative events,including a reception at theLibrary in June. CAREER IN ENGLANDJennifer Elizabeth Anne will be attendingthe University of Manchester in Englandthis fall in the PhD program on a fullresearch assistantship. Jennifer (alsoknown as Indy) will be studying under Dr.Phil Manning, a world renownedpaleontologist who is well-known for hisseries of National Geographic specialsentitled Jurassic CSI.Many people along the way have not taken her seriously andencouraged her to forget her dream and study for a job with amore secure future. However, she never gave up on her dreamof becoming a paleontologist and her hard work has paid off.Jennifer was employed by the Academy of Natural Scienceswhile attending the University of Delaware as a Geology Major(graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 2007) and getting hermasters at Temple University in 2010. She is a 2003 ColumbiaHigh School graduate, where she had three years of AuthenticScience Research, with Paleontology as her area of interest.During the summers of 2000 thru 2002, she interned at theAcademy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. Highlights of the May 9, 2012 Sand Lake Town Board Meeting:• Appointments – Public Works/Highway - With the recentretirement of Commissioner Larry Browe, the Town Boardunanimously appointed long-time dedicated employee Brian Huntas Commissioner of Public Works/Superintendent of Highways.Commissioner Hunt appointed William Rohl as Deputy Commissionerof Highways. Taking care of our town road system and ensuringpublic safety is a significant undertaking, essential to our quality oflife and one of the most appreciated services the Town provides.• Sewer Rent Increases – In September, 2011, the prior TownBoard voted to increase the sewer rents for Sewer District #2.However, the Town Board failed to hold the Public Hearing requiredby law. The rents can’t increase unless we do. I proposed that wenot hold a Public Hearing and not increase the sewer rents. TheSewer District has a $59,000 fund balance (savings) which is almostthe full operational budget for the year. Rensselaer County hasraised its sewer rates substantially. This is the wrong time for theTown to add to that burden.• Comprehensive Plan Committees – Based on therecommendations outlined in the Town’s Comprehensive Plan, theTown Board unanimously approved appointments to the PlanningOversight Committee, Mining Liaison Committee andEnvironmental/Open Space/Recreation Committee. Thesecommittees will advise the Town Board regarding some of thespecific actions or policies the Town should pursue to accomplishour shared vision of our Town.• Clean-Up Day – The Town of Sand Lake, the Sand Lake BusinessAssociation and the Bicentennial Committee are co-sponsoring a

town-wide Clean-Up Day on Saturday, June 2, 2012. The Town’sConvenience Facility on Chamberlin Hill Road will have extendedhours – June 2nd from 7 am – 3 pm and June 3rd from 9 am – noon.The regular fee schedule applies and permits are available in theTown Clerk’s Office. Disposing of small electronics (computers andTVs) is free. The Town’s Department of Public Works (DPW) onSpringer Road will also be open on June 2nd and 3rd from 9 am tonoon for disposal of brush and metal at no cost. Free mulch isavailable at the DPW garage while it lasts. More information to come!The next Town Board Workshop is May 30, 2012 and the nextregular Town Board Meeting is June 13, 2012 – 7:30 pm at the TownHall.

Attempts to get relieffrom the State legislature failed and resulted in the farmers revolting,refusing to pay the rent and organizing forces to prevent the evictionof tenant farmers. Dr Smith Boughton known as “Big Thunder” wasinstrumental in uniting the farmers in the East Manor on both sidesof the Hudson River in this effort. As many as 4,000 farmers becameanti-rent members. Announcing the arrival of the sheriff was madeby blowing on a dinner horn. Tar barrels were set on fire and somerent collectors were tarred and feathered. Anti-renters could not beidentified because of their calico dresses, Indian masks and nameslike “Big Thunder”.Sheriff Willard Griggs was shot and killed when he and a possetraveled to the farm of William Whitbeck to take possession of it bycourt order. Griggs also buried in Sand Lake Union Cemetery wasrecognized for being killed in the line of duty at a memorial serviceon May 19, 2006.Ironically, the gravestones of Smith Boughton and Willard Griggsface each other in the cemetery.Anti –Rent legislation was finally passed. In Boughton’s words, “Isaw the feudal landlords stripped of their feudal privileges, theleases stripped of their onerous extractions. It was the third

time the Sheriff’s Office participated in this national program.Organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), theevent invited the public to drop off unused drugs to be disposedof safely — no questions asked.The Program was created by the DEA for the purpose ofproviding a safe means for the public to dispose of their unused,unwanted or expired prescription drugs. This year 661 poundsof unwanted medications were retrieved by 564 people inRensselaer County alone. “Not only does the program reducethe risk of prescription drug abuse and the risk of accidentaloverdose by small children, by participating in this programyou will also have a positive impact on our environment”, saysMahar. “Flushing medicine down the toilet or throwing drugs inthe trash can pose health hazards by seeping into watersystems.” The drop off site accepted all medications includingliquids as long as they were in a sealed container. All medicationscollected were brought to the DEA for destruction.

They havefour serious and two criticalinjuries.THIS IS WHAT CAN HAPPENWHEN ALCOHOL IS INVOLVEDAND DISASTER HITS. The anguish now starts here.The ambulance workers andfirefighters know the kids, thepolice know the kids and nowthe parents must be notifiedif they haven’t already andare now on the scene.Once in the hospital, we findthat only the driver wil lrecover completely and theothers have massive injuriesthat will be with them forever.However, the driver will paydearly.Now the blame starts. Whowas driving? Why were theydrinking? Why did you get inthe car with them? Who isgoing to pay for this? We willsue them?Meanwhile back home, theambulance workers, policeand firefighters that were atthe scene have to go throughintense debriefing because ofthe severity of the crash.Your moms and dads aredevastated along with yourfriends and family.Remember it only takes aminute to make a baddecision, but in some cases forothers a lifetime of pain andsuffering.Please use common sense andavoid alcohol and never, neverdrive a vehicle if you do.You have a lifetime to enjoy.Do it sensibly.~ Bill Dikant, D.W.I. LYMPHEDEMA is the accumulation ofa protein rich lymph fluid which typicallygets trapped between the skin and themuscle with the connective tissues dueto a dysfunctional operating lymphaticsystem. Most commonly noted in theextremities, with one extremity being largerthan the other. Lymphedema can,however, occur in the groin, head andtrunk. Lymphedema has multiple causes,primary or congenital (being born with thedisease). Secondary lymphedema is dueto injury/damage as a result of cancer and or cancertreatments, surgeries, tumors, thermal burns, and repeatedinfections such as cellulitis to name a few. Lymphedema has four stages; ranging from latency,meaning the individual shows no signs but is at risk due tofactors listed previously; reversible stage, the limbdemonstrates pitting edema but may spontaneously subsidewith treatment; irreversible stage, limb size has increasedand the edema is nonpitting with skin that has become thicker/fibrosis; lymphostatic elephantiasis, limb size has continuedto increase, skin is fibrotic with an orange peel effect, andrecurrent cellulitis infections are common. There is currently no cure for lymphedema. However,once diagnosed with Lymphedema by a physician, the nextstep is to seek out a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT). Treatment for lymphedema includes patient educationand Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includesmanual lymph drainage (MLD) techniques to activate workinglymphnodes and open lymphatic fluid pathways followed byapplication of mechanical compression bandages to controland reduce the amount of fluid in the limb. Upon completionof CDT, the patient should be independent with self-MLDand compression bandage and/or compression garmentapplication for ongoing management.

Some things will never change ~ Nelson and Don still helpingkids is certainly one of them...Nelson Wilkinson ~ J. DonaldLeahey Golf Outing will be held on Sunday, May 20th, at theSycamore Country Club.In a span of about seven months between 2000 and 2001, theRensselaer community said good-bye to two of its finest people.Anyone who knew them know that Nellie and Don gave ofthemselves for the betterment of others - and they did itwillingly and unselfishly. So, as tribute to the memories ofthese two remarkable gentlemen, their families and friendsare proud to sponsor a benefit gold tournament to raise fundsfor scholarships for Rensselaer youth in the names of NelsonWilkinson and J. Donald Leahey.

It is amazing how fast these seasons fly by! The Averill Parkspring sports are entering their last stretch of the season.Meets and games are getting even more competitive and theAP teams are only getting better.The boys track team took on Guilderland and Columbia in aduel meet on Tuesday. Congratulations to Wesley Clayton whocame in first in the 400 Meter, Andrew Tario who won the 3200Meter, Kevin Otty who took home first in the 400 Meter hurdles,Mike Hayes who placed first in boy’s triple jump, and JohnRodgers who took first in Discus. Also, great job to the boy’s4x400 and 4x800 Relay teams that each took home a blueribbon. Fantastic job boys!The girl’s Lacrosse team took on worthy opponent Bethlehemthis week. AP fought hard, but unfortunately, couldn’t pull outa victory and lost 9-6. Darian Goyer scored two goals, SarahLaranjo had one, and Molly O’ Bryan had a great game withthree. O’Bryan also had three goals against Columbia on Friday.Sofi Soriento, Morgan Lionarons, Emily Halpin, and KristaFitzgerald had two goals apiece against the Blue Devils.Unfortunately, their goals were not enough and AP fell short10-8. Keep working ladies!Boys Baseball battled Colonie this week, but unfortunately,lost 8-1. The softball team also played the Raiders. Sorry tosay, they too were unable to come away with a win, losing 7-1. Good game to Kelly Donnelly who scored the teams onlyrun. The ladies will try to redeem themselves during their fivegames next week. “Being a dedicated athletemeans that you always try toget better and always workyour hardest,” stated MollyFryer, a senior at Averill ParkHigh School and a varsitysoftball player. You can findMolly playing 2nd base on thesoftball field. Molly has beenplaying ball since she was sixyears old and started playingfor Twin Town, but then laterswitched over to ClassieLassies. Fryer is a verydedicated athlete and playssoftball year round. She plays

for a travel team called The Long Island Riptide, and they playin the summer and the winter.In the off season, Molly stays in shape by running and visitingthe batting cages three times a week in order to keep her skillssharp. Molly’s favorite part about playing softball is being ableto hang out with her friends and have fun, but at the same timeplay a very competitive sport. Before every game, Fryer leadsher team in a prayer to help get them all pumped up for thegame and to help them focus. In the fall, when she isn’t playingsoftball, Molly plays Volleyball for Averill Park and has beenplaying since 8th grade. Molly is an athlete to watch and isvery dedicated to everything that she does. In her spare time,she enjoys spending time with her friends and family. Nextyear, Fryer will be attending the SUNY Plattsburgh and will bemajoring in Social Work. She will also be playing softball there,so if you are in town for a game, be sure to look for her on thefield!Molly would like to thank her friends, family, teachers, andcoaches for always pushing her to do her best. “My parentshave inspired me to be the person I am today through all oftheir love and support throughout my years playing softball,”said Fryer.Best of Luck to Molly and the rest of the Warriors as they racetoward the end of their regular season.

In the second week of play, the Devil Cats 10U, 11U, and 12Uteams won 4 of their 7 games. Matt Ramano pitched 4strong innings against one of the best teams in the area. The11U team lost 8-5 to a 12U team. Jack Wendel, Luke Pascarella,Jon Weber, Ryan Deo, and Evan Bell all had singles. The 10URed team beat Clifton Park 12-4 and was led by Jake Borntand Thomas Harkin with a double and single apiece. CodiGenthener also had a double and a single and Jon Blankenshiphad 2 singles. The school has played a huge rolein shaping the lives of students and area residents and wecongratulate Holy Spirit on 50 outstanding years,” said Danaher.Holy Spirit pastor Father Joseph O’Brien accepted a legislativeresolution at the April 10 meeting that notes the anniversaryand contributions made by the school.The school was started in 1962 by members of the Holy SpiritParish who wanted to provide a faith-based education to areastudents. The school included students from throughoutsouthern Rensselaer County and northern Columbia County.“Holy Spirit is recognized as one of the foundations of thecommunity in southern Rensselaer County and a place that hasmade a major impact on those students educated at the school,”said Legislator Louis Desso.

HISTORY OF POESTENKILL FIRE CO.On Tuesday May 22nd, the Poestenkill Historical Society’s programwill be The History of the Poestenkill Fire Company. Late in 1919 agroup of civc-minded men, led by Marvin Foster, worked long anddiligently to organize and equip a fire department. The first officialmeeting was held on January 7, 1920. The following officers wereelected. President-Marvin Foster, Vice President-Jacob Veith,Treasurer-Nelson Fisher, Secretary-Garett Ives and Chief-GeorgePrediger. Building began on Oct. 4th, 1920 and was completed Nov.1921. The first annual field day was on July 4th, 1920 at “Jake”Veith’s Pasture on the White Church Road. In early days, alarmswere sounded by wildly ringing the church bells. In 1925, an electricsiren was purchased for $36.75. An Overtine Boyer Double TankEngine and a hand-drawn chemical wagon was purchased for $625.It was replaced by a 1926 model T Ford which was replaced later bya 1932 Ford. Finally in 1939, the company voted to purchase a newAmerican LaFrance pumper mounted on an International truck. In1948, an emergency or first aid squad was organized and trained byCharles Brunelle. The Ladies Auxiliary has always been an extremelyactive group. Thousands of dollars have been earned by the Auxiliarysince its formation in the 1920s. The program will be held in thePoestenkill Town Hall, RT 351, on Tues., May 22nd, at 7:00PM. Theprogram is free and the pubic is welcome. Refreshments will beserved.
