SAVE the TREE in THE VILLAGE of NASSAULetter to the Editor: Glendora and 70 of her friends do notwant the tree in the center of Nassau Village cut down norharmed in any way. Who wants to cut it down? The VillageBoard wants to put a clock there. Who is paying for the clock? We do not know, but $35,000 could well be used for severalindigents we know in Nassau Village.“The tree is going to interfere with National Grid power lines.”The tree is at least 5 feet away from the lines and has been 35years getting to within 5 feet. Think how many years it will betill the carefully growing spruce will be touching the wires.“National Grid will have to take it down.” Glendora has a call into the CEO of National Grid to see if someone will come out togive an opinion as to when the tree and the wires will come intocontact. The Village Board sought an estimate of $600 to cutdown the poor darling. So wait until the time comes, if ever, and let National Grid assume the cost.On May 13th, Glendora took her friends’ signatures on 4 sheetsof paper to the Village Board meeting. Another resident said,“The tree must not come down unless absolutely essential.”We succeeded! The matter has been tabled until the nextmeeting on the 2nd Wednesday of June. Save the tree! CallGlendora at 518-610-5810.Wasn’t it Joyce Kilmer who said, “I think that I shall never seea poem as lovely as a tree”?~ Submitted by Glendora Buell, Nassau

MORE THAN 75 YEARS COMBINED EXPERIENCE

LANGLEY: THE BIG QUESTION??Letter to the Editor: I am pleased that Keith Langley has finallyattempted to address the dismal financial situation that hashung over East Greenbush like a treacherous thunder cloudsince the Moody’s designation of “junk bond” in 2009. I thankThe Advertiser for printing his letter in the May 14th issue, because it gives citizens an opportunity to hear the Supervisordeclare the state of our unaudited books “a travesty”.Pronouncing the books “unable to be audited” and promising to“look into having 2013 and 2014 audited” is far too little and fartoo late from a man who has been the Chief Financial Officer(CFO) for 3 years and 5 months. Instead, Mr. Langley hasmissed the mark by refusing throughout his tenure to providethe public with a comprehensive Financial Recovery Plan andreporting on his progress instituting it.Mr. Langley explained some very bleak comments made by thecurrent East Greenbush Comptroller in his letter. TheComptroller’s comments are understandable. What is totallyincomprehensible is Mr. Langley’s passive stand on hisresponsibilities as CFO. The big question for him is: Why can’tyou, the CFO, certify the books that were kept on your watch?~ Eileen Grant, East GreenbushEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

SUPPORTING THE WHOLE FAMILY AFTER

A WARRIOR’S INJURYWounded Warrior Project Builds Camaraderie for Families and

Caregivers of Injured VeteransLee Medina smiles when she describes meetingher husband, Army Corporal David Medina, nearly six years ago. They met throughfriends, and even from opposite ends of thecountry – he was stationed in Washingtonstate and she was in Virginia – theirconnection was instant. “We just knew whenwe started talking. We built a strong

foundation by communicating with each other. We knew this waswhat we both wanted.”That foundation was rattled when David was seriously injured afterhis Stryker ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) in Iraq inNovember of 2009. He sustained serious injuries from the blast, including a back injury and a traumatic brain injury (TBI), anddeveloped post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of hisexperience. David was honorably discharged and returned to Leeand their three children, but Lee knew something was different.“When he came home, it was obvious that the life we were going tolive was not going to be the same,” says Lee. “The world is different.Life changes drastically. I didn’t know where to go or what to do.But what does a soldier do when another is injured? What do youthink I’m going to do as a spouse? I’m going to carry you.”David struggled with nightmares, loud noises, and the lingeringeffects of his injuries, and Lee left her full-time job to become hiscaregiver. When a neighbor told her about Wounded WarriorProject® (WWP), she reached out in the hopes that David mighthave an opportunity to connect with other warriors and get out ofthe house. She could never have imagined, she says, the level ofsupport, understanding, and camaraderie that her entire familywould receive. The Medina’s joined Family Support, a componentof WWP’s Alumni program, which helps injured veterans, familymembers, and caregivers learn about WWP and network, heal, andengage with one another.“WWP recognizes the integral role that family members and caregiversplay in a warrior’s successful transition and reintegration into civilianlife, and we are here to support the entire family with the full rangeof the programs and services we offer,” says Ryan Kules, nationalalumni director at WWP. “When warriors serve their country, theirwhole family serves with them. When their warrior returns homeinjured, they deserve that same level of support. They deserve toknow they are not alone.”Family Support, which now serves over 11,000 caregivers andfamily members of injured service members, provides education onWWP programs and services, engagement and networkingopportunities with peers, and respite opportunities to help alleviatethe tremendous stress that a warrior’s injury places on the entirefamily.“Soldiers are trained to go into battle, but caregivers aren’t trainedfor this and it’s horrible when the civilian world doesn’t understandwhat it’s like,” says Lee. “But you sit down with other caregivers, and you talk, and they get you. They know what it’s like and theyshare tips to make it better. We don’t feel like outcasts anymore; wefeel understood.”Lee says that David and her family love the activities in which thewhole family can participate together because the camaraderie thatDavid experiences with other injured veterans is shared with thefamily members and caregivers as well. “It brings the David that Iknew back out…to see him smile, that’s the guy I fell in love with, and he’s still in there.”If you or someone you know suffered an injury in connection withmilitary service, please contact the WWP Resource Center [email protected] or 888.WWP.ALUM(997.2586). Avoiding Aches and PainsWhile Gardening

Maccio Physical Therapy518.273.2121

1 New Hampshire Ave., Troy, NY 12180

www.macciophysicaltherapy.com

Common gardening tasks suchas digging, planting, weeding, mulching & raking can causestress & strain on muscles &joints. The shoulders, back, neck & knees are primetargets. Following these tipscan help you minimize the riskof injury:• Excessive bending whilegardening can increase lowback pain. Gardening in themorning is riskier thangardening later in the day as

discogenic injuries are more vulnerable in earlymorning hours due to reabsorption of fluid inintervertebral discs at night. Performing routine backbends, press-ups, or neck retraction extensions aregood tools to use to help prevent pain.• Don’t overdo it. Be mindful of how your body feels. If you experience an aching back or neck, slowdown & stretch or stop & switch tasks. Use a gardencart or wheelbarrow to move tools & heavy plantingmaterials.• Practice proper body mechanics. Bend at yourknees & maintain a slight curve in your back helpyou avoid strain. Change positions frequently toavoid stiffness or cramping. When kneeling, usepads or a pillow to help absorb the pressure.• Physical therapists can help you find safe ways togarden if you have an injury or are worried aboutbecoming injured.Feel free to call us with questions!

NEW LIFE FROM THAT WHICH IS

WEAKENED

On Sunday, May 24, 2015, the Nassau Reformed Church willjoin churches of many denominations in celebrating Pentecost, the dynamic, powerful near presence of God in the coming ofthe Holy Spirit. Reference will be made to John 15:26-27;16:12-15 wherein Jesus promises his disciples that, as he isabout to leave them, he will never leave them alone; he willsend to them an advocate, a counselor, one who will guidethem into “all the truth.” The sermon will be based on Ezekiel37:1-14 where, in a mysterious vision, God shows Ezekiel avalley of dry bones; and asks “can these bones live” and thenprovides a miraculous answer. Consideration will be upon thechurch today, in many of its forms, where there is death, erosion, and decline; yet, although these things are happening, theSpirit of God is able to breathe upon us, and bring “New LifeFrom That Which is Weakened.” Worshipers are invited to bringbrilliantly flowering plants to decorate the chancel on thisPentecost Sunday and dress with the same brilliant colors, allsymbolizing the Holy Spirit and his descent upon the disciples.Sunday School boys and girls will begIn their worship in glory toGod as Pastor tells a story of how the sound of wind and theflames announced Jesus’ gift of the Holy Spirit, a birthday giftfor Jesus’ church, the Christian church. We begin worship at 11a.m. in our chapel on the second level of our Church-School-Building, 43 Church Street (Route 20).

at ST. MICHAEL’S

A group of children werebrought by their parents tomeet Jesus. As the childrenapproached Him they wereturned away by His disciples.Seeing this, Jesus responded,“Let the little children come tome and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of Godbelongs to such as them.” Weknow that children fidget. Weknow that chi ldren can’talways find the “mute” button. They would not be childrenotherwise! We love all of ourfamilies at St. Michael’s, andthat certainly includes ourfamilies with small children. And so, we welcome you toSt. Michael’s, where children– and all of the things thatmakes them children – arealways welcome. A TYPICAL DAY in the LIFE of a VOLUNTEER SAND LAKEAMBULANCE DRIVER - At 2 a.m., your pager goes off. Youfumble to silence it, thinking “How can such a small thing makeso much noise?” You jump out of bed, fumble for the phone andgroggily call dispatch. A crisp voice answers “Communications -what’s your emergency?” to which you reply “This is Sand LakeAmbulance, Driver #XX, enroute to the station”. The adrenalinepumping through your body, you hurriedly put on your waitinguniform and head for the station. The call is a Delta (highpriority), and your crew is waiting in the ambulance. You jumpin, buckle up, check your mirrors, and pull out. After lookingboth ways you hit the lights and sirens, call dispatch to confirmenroute to scene and give thanks for GPS. Upon arrival, youcall dispatch to let them know you’re at your destination. Asyour crew exits, you take a deep breath to find your calm. While the EMTs and Paramedics do their thing, you bring thestretcher and any other supplies needed. After helping loadthe patient into the ambulance, you radio dispatch of yourdestination and proceed to the hospital. Upon arrival, you openthe backdoor of the ambulance to a smiling crew - all is well. The patient is transferred to the Emergency Room, and thestretcher is cleaned and made ready for your next call. No callis ever the same, but at the end of the day, you feel goodknowing you’re doing your part to help your community. Canyou see yourself in this scenario? If so, call (518) 674-2221 orvisit our website http://www.sandlakeambulance.org/.

CHRISTIE OLSONChristie Olson is a seniorat Averi l l Park HighSchool, some like to callher Toph. Not only isshe an incredible artist(one of her pieces wasentered into the SaintRose Regional and theMedia Arts Festival inBethlehem), she is theExecutive Officer of theOff-Broadway Players. Which means she is the student leaderof the drama club and carries many responsibilities.Christie has been in OBP (Off-Broadway Players) since 2011.She shyly admitted her very first role was the role of “a tree”.She has done just about every job there is to do within theclub. She has performed in quite a few shows (her most well-known role being Peter Pan), but it doesn’t stop there. She hasworked with lights, sound, costumes, props and has been ourphotographer! Her participation in 9 out of the 12 OBP showsdoesn’t include her “millions” of smaller shows for theatreclasses. ‘Looking back”, I asked her “what has been your favorite partof OBP?” The best thing to her is how “we work so hard together,no matter how stressful it becomes, everything and everyonecomes together on show night”. I also asked her what theexperience in the club has taught her, her response wasflawless: “This club has taught me that you don’t have to beperfect for a part. I am nothing like the past Executive Officers. We just have that one thing in common: the club”.The mood was bittersweet as I continued to ask her some ofher best memories. Her favorite one was from her lastproduction, which she directed, “You Can’t Take It With You”.“One day it really clicked that this show summed up my life. Allof the crazy families in the show reminded me of my crazyfamily and friends. However, I would never want them tochange. This club helped me realize what I really love.” Christiewanted to dedicate her last show to her grandmother, wholoved and supported OBP. The club will miss you, Christie!
