DEA COMPUTING ~ SERVING THE

CAPITAL DISTRICT FOR 16 YEARS!

DEA Computing is a family owned and operated computer repairan sales business. We are currently in our 16th year of business. Ordoors opened on Oct. 1, 1997 on Main Ave., Wynantskill. Movingback to the Capital District, after 13 years of being a nuclear machinistaboard various Submarines, while enlisted in the US Navy, Destryand Terri Agy felt it was time for a change. And a computer storewas born! Our goal was to provide computer equipment and sevicesfor the up and coming trend of home PC’s. The computer age wasbooming and we had the skills and the knowledge to help thebustling community we called home leap into the future. We learnedearly on that people did not want to pay a lot to have their computersrepaired; with money tight, spending a lot on a repair was hard tojustify. Quite often we hear “is that all?” Yes that’s all.Over the years, we have met many wonderful people and somelife-long friends. Our biggest asset is that we talk to our customers

Value DrivenEvery organization, regardless of its size or tenure in the market, will have moments in which its mission and the commitment to thevalues upon which it is established are tested. The SleasmanInsurance Agency was established April, 2008, a time many willrecall of great economic and political uncertainty. Very few expertsprojected any relief in the immediate future, and many among uscontinue in this great struggle even today. As the son of a passionate public school teacher and prolific businessowner and WWII Veteran, I am privileged to be the youngest often productive members of our greater Capital Region community.I learned early that commitment to values allows us to weather thestorms that life sometimes can bring and to keep our feet tied tothe ground when the clouds do lift. It is only natural that thesevalues are among the guiding principles upon which I continue tobuild our business:Integrity. Honesty. Respect. Commitment.Knowing that I share these values with the thousands of professionals within the State Farmorganization, who live and work in our communities, has allowed me and my staff to help a greatmany families, business owners, single parents and individuals celebrate life’s greataccomplishments and navigate life’s awesome challenges. There simply is no website or toll freenumber, that can replace this experience for our valued clients, my staff, or my family. Ourcollective gratitude is immeasurable. As we look forward to the future, and the hopeful prospects of a continuing improving economy,we take time this Memorial Day weekend to reflect and openly express our gratitude for themany sacrifices our Veterans and their families have made and are making for our uniquelyAmerican Values. Best Wishes as we celebrate the heroes who live and once lived among us all!

Happy Memorial Day! The Sleasman Agency, Peter J SleasmanState Farm Insurance, 518 286 2886, www.insuremepete.com. Experience. The Difference. RALLY FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION

Letter to the Editor: The Averill Park Teachers would like toinvite the Averill Park School District community to join us atthe Rally for Public Education on June 8, 2013 at the Capitol inAlbany. We are marching on Albany to insist that New YorkState fairly fund our school district to avoid further devastatingcuts to your child’s educational programs. Over the last fewyears, our students have lost many important classes, programs, services, and teachers. It is time to stand up andsay we will not tolerate any more cuts to our school district. On April 23rd, the Averill Park Board of Education adopted aresolution against high stakes testing. We live in anunprecedented time of testing. Our students in grades 3-8just finished two weeks of intense NYSED standardized testingwhere the “average” student tested for over 450 minutes andwe will be testing again within a week or two according totesting regulations set forth by the state educationdepartment. The Rally for Public Education will give us acollective voice to tell NYSED that students need to spendmore time at school learning and less time taking standardizedtests AND that we stand united against standardized tests forgrades K-2. We would truly appreciate community support ofthis Rally for Public Education on 6-8-13. Educators, students, families, administrators, and Board of Education membersacross New York State will be in Albany to use one collectivevoice to tell New York State that our students are too importantto not get public education decisions right. For information onthe rally, please go to www.aptany.com. PLEASE JOIN US 6-8-13! Thank you. It has been a busy spring full of great progress. Again, aspecial thank you to all those that are coming together regard-less of political background or location in our diverse commu-nity to work on so many projects that benefit our residents. We could not do all we are accomplishing without you.We were pleased to recently break ground on the new MudPond Preserve trail area. This new project is being completedwith volunteer hours and donations. In honor of NationalTrails Day on Saturday, June 1st, we are seeking volunteers tohelp clear Preserve trails for a few hours beginning at 9:00 am.Please visit townofnassau.org for more details.Construction is ongoing at your town hall as we complete someinsulation and electrical upgrades utilizing a gift to the Town. What huge changes at no taxpayer expense!Work also continues at the community garden at Town prop-erty on Route 20. We are also currently seeking proposals forroof replacement for the building on that property. Please visitthe town website for more information. The Highway Department is seeking to hire two, full time, CDLtruck drivers. Please contact the Highway Garage at 766-9417 for details. In other actions, the Board has awarded the construction bidfor the Burden Lake Sewer District, authorized amendment ofthe Special Use Permit for the QRT project, and discussed thepossible abandonment of the Vickery Cemetery, as well as thepending state application for the restoration of Brainard Cem-etery.The Board also unanimously appointed Priscilla Sherman as amember of the Natural Resources Committee and RebeccaChapman as a member of the Youth Committee. We have also approved highway expenditures of $28,000 forroad repair projects and $8,000 for dust control of Nassau’sroads.Additionally, we have begun review of town accounts as partof the audit implementation for the 2012 calendar year. This action was done at asavings to the town over the previous arrangement and pro-vides yet another protection for taxpayer funds. Finally, on a very personal note, please accept my sincerethanks to all those that sent cards, emails and calls as myfamily mourned the loss of one of our own. CAN YOU HELP A CHILD THIS SUMMER?

This year, much more so than ever before, there are so manyworking families, especially single parent households, in needof financial assistance for essential childcare in order to maintaintheir employment and ensure their children are in a safeenvironment. Most of them have previously been eligible forsome aid from Social Services, but, even though they remain inthe low income range set by Federal guidelines, their assistancehas been eliminated and they have no where to turn. Manywould have to quit their jobs and/or leave their children in thecare of young teen siblings or in “undesirable” situations.Hope 7 has always decreased fees, and sometimes chargednothing, for families in need, but this year the need is fargreater than we can handle on our own. We are hopeful ofreceiving some help from “The Times Union Hope Fund”, but wecan only stretch that funding and our own boundaries just sofar. Boundaries do exist as when enrollment increases, so doesthe need for additional counselors, our major expense for thesummer, in addition to a $9-10,000 bus bill for travel to parkvenues so the children can be outside enjoying summer’s greatofferings, rather than being cooped up in a building all day.Your help would be greatly appreciated. Our fee of $160 perweek is less expensive than comparable programs and includesfree lunch and snack for 5 days a week, 10.5 hours per day.We MUST know by June 1st what we have to work with in orderto hire additional staff and to let families know if we can helpthem or not before school is out.Any, and all donation amounts will be gratefully accepted. Many thanks, Hope 7 - Phyllis Sandow, Staff, and Those WeServe, 596 Pawling Avenue, Troy, NY 12180(518) 272-8029; [email protected]; www.hopeseven.com

There is one sport out there that you may not hear about toooften, but when you do, you know it’ll be an exciting story. There are several girls from Averill Park High School who playfor a local rugby team coached by our very own math teacher,Ms. Freeman. Leah Gill, a senior at APHS, is one of them. Thisis only Leah’s second year playing, but when you see her inaction on the field, you would think she was born to play rugby. She began playing because a few of her friends did, and shethought it’d be a fun thing to put her energy into while alsohanging with friends. Her position is a back. Gill’s favorite partabout playing is definitely the aggressiveness of the game.Tackling is a huge part of rugby and Leah knows just what to doevery time she’s up against an opponent. Another part ofrugby is being in excellent physical condition, which is why adedicated athlete, such as Leah, invests lots of time in workingout and preparing for the season. Over the winter, she goesfor a lot of runs in order to maintain her endurance. Accordingto Leah, being a dedicated athlete means working your hardestat all times to help the team progress in any way. Gill practiceswith the team three times a week and they have a game eachweek also. The games are really intense and fun, says Leah, but they can also be really scary when someone gets seriouslyhurt. Leah spends a lot of time practicing and playing with theteam, though she also has a lot of school work to keep up with. This year she is taking Japanese, Statistics, Physics, Englishand Advanced Placement government and Politics. In the fall, she will be attending SUNY Oneonta, although she is unsure ofwhat she would like to major in. Leah would like to thank all ofher family and friends for all their support they have given herthroughout the years. She would like to give a special thanksto her grandfather for all of his support, and because he is herbiggest inspiration. We wish Leah the best of luck in her future!

JOIN GIRL SCOUTS!Girl Scouts is wonderful organization in our local community! Our Girl Scout program allows the girls to figure out whatpathway (ex. Individual, camp, troop, event, and series) theywould like to experience girl scouts. Many girls are usually introops in which they plan and carry out different activities. These activities can be based on badges, journeys (biggerprojects), service projects (ex. Collecting items for people, making items for others), or just for fun activities. Troopsusually meet once every 2 weeks. The younger troops tend tofocus more on badge work, the middle school troops and highschool level troops tend to focus more on travel and funactivities. Also in our community, we have a teen troop (6th –12th grade) that is dedicated to hiking (includes primitivecamping) and only does trips during the year.Girl Scouts is for all girls’ kindergarten through 12th grade. Weare forming new troops now so that we will be ready bySeptember. Our neighborhood supports girls attending RedMill, Bell Top, Rensselaer Schools, Woodland Montessori School,Goff Middle School, and Columbia High School.Through Girl Scouts, discover the fun, friendship, and power ofgirls together.~ Jennifer DeMarco ([email protected])

LACK OF COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION:

TOWN OF SCHODACK

Letter to the Editor: At the 4/25/13 Town Board meeting, a resolution

was on the agenda, not easy to find, that the Laberge Group, anengineering firm, would be awarded an $18,000 contract to workwith a small group of insiders to develop a proposal for neededzoning changes. In 2010, Supervisor Dowds had said that a PublicComprehensive Plan Committee would be formed to work on doingjust that. What makes this even more astounding is the fact that a number ofcitizens at this meeting expressed concern about the lack ofcommunity involvement. Yet given this public input, when it wastime for the Board to vote, the details of this proposed contract andthe response to the publics’ concerns garnered no discussion. Theonly comments heard by Board members were the vote “aye”.During the comment period at the 4/25 meeting, the Supervisorsaid, there will be public comment later after the Report wascompleted. No idea given, however, as to when or how this wouldbe managed. One would have to assume that we can expect theusual process, letting people talk at one meeting, without furtherdiscussion or consideration by the Board of the ideas presented.Zoning is critical to our Comprehensive Plan. According to theDepartment of State “an important component of any comprehensiveplan is public participation.” So far we have seen little publicparticipation and very little change in the Plan under the currentadministration. Our Association members and other knowledgeable citizens haveoffered the Town assistance and provided input for years to helpget a real meaningful plan put in place. Yet instead, there is this“work group” who will decide; don’t know who is on it, whenthey’ll meet, what they will do or what happens after they’re done. All we know now is the public won’t have any meaningfulinvolvement. The voting public deserves more…we want a VOICE!~ Submitted by Tony KirbyPresident of the Schodack Planning & Development AssociationEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

We wish to thankthe many people and groupsthat made our sale possible: TheHale Family who allowed us tohold our potting nights at theirhome, donated many perennialsfor the sale and gave us some oftheir homemade maple syrup tosell, the proceeds of which wedonated to Doors of Hope, inmemory of Diane Hale; SalemUnited Methodist Church wherewe held our sale; Boy ScoutTroop 525 which helped withsetting up and taking down thepicnic tables and provided coffeeand home baked goodies;Kiwanis of Sand Lake for the useof their tent; Nancy Forster, who donated both plants andlovely ceramic pieces. Manygarden club members donatedtheir time, plants and energy tothe preparation and executionof the sale; we could not havedone it without them. Plantswere also dug at non-clubmembers’ homes: Christ lSchmidt, Diane Hutchinson,Barbara Fioravanti, PeggyGoold and Sandy Carmichael allcontributed things from theirgardens. RENSS. CO. PERMIT RECORDS TO BE

SEALED UNTIL NYS REFORMS SAFE ACT

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola is calling on his fellowcounty clerks to seal all pistol permit records in their officesuntil New York State provides a blueprint and the necessaryfunding to clerks to investigate and process the Public RecordsExemption form submitted by those permit holders not wishingtheir records divulged publicly. “Once again, New York State is hitting the counties with anunfunded mandate in the disguise of ‘public policy’.” Mr. Merolasaid, “In their zeal to be at the head of the class in gun control, the Governor and the State Police seemed to forget howCounty Clerks were supposed to handle the huge amounts offorms that have come into their offices. I neither have thestaff or he funding available to deal with these forms, so theeasiest thing for me to do is to seal all Rensselaer County pistolrecords until the State comes up with a guideline and the moneyto deal with these exemption forms.”The Governor and State police have been vague as to theprocessing and investigation of the FOIL exemption formsallowable under the SAFE act. County Clerks originally thoughtthe forms were to be submitted, investigated and processedby the State Police only to be told that it was to be theirresponsibility as the Record holders. The Rensselaer CountyClerk’s office does not have the manpower or funding availableto investigate and process the close to 2000 forms that havecome into the office. As a result, Mr. Merola has decided toseal all pistol permit records in Rensselaer County and is callingon his fellow County Clerks to do the same. “I am not going to ask the County Executive and legislaturefor additional manpower and funding just to do the job thatthe State Police should be doing.” Mr. Merola said, “Sealingpermit records provides privacy for all permit holders fromneedless public intrusion and this is the way Rensselaer Countywill be going. I call on my fellow clerks to join with me in sealingall their records and not unduly burden their county taxpayerswith the costs of an unfunded mandate.”County Clerk Merola also encourages all permit holders whohave not done so to submit their exemption requests to theCounty Clerks office, 105 Third Street, Troy, NY 12180.

Pet Adoption of the Week

If you would like to meet Max to possibly adopt him,

Contact : [email protected] or 518-393-0755

MAX - Neutered male. His mom was Sheltie & Pom mix

but his Dad's breed is unknown. He turned 2 yrs in February. He is current w/vaccines, heartworm negative, 42 lbs and fullgrown. Max is a super nice dog and loves being part of a family

but his new family should not a super busy one. Max was lovedby his family, however he had too much herding instincts for hisfamilies lifestyle (busy family with kids friends running in and

out). Max needs to be adopted by a dog owner who knows theherding instincts and antics. A home with young runningchildren/hectic lifestyle is not what Max needs. He gets along

with other dogs. Max requires fenced yard. His ideal homewould be with a couple or single person with no young children

who loves to play with their dog, go on hikes, do obedience, agility, herding, playing ball

in their fenced in yard and hanging out on the couch in the evening!
