MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP?
It is a $250 prize awarded to a Poestenkill high school studentwho can best express their love of reading in an essay.After the summer following 8th grade, Leo realized his parentsneeded his income to survive, so he chose not to return toschool. He worked 6 days a week but most of his spare timewas spent reading – reading about everything, especiallyhistory. When he enlisted in the Army, he was given the basicbattery of tests that all recruits are required to take. Thesetests determine what areas a soldier would be best qualifiedfor. It was determined that Mr. Clement possessed theeducational level of a second year college student. He eventuallybecame an instructor in the NY National Guard and attained therank of Command Sergeant Major. He also taught classes atHVCC for the Master Gardeners. Reading brought himknowledge and joy his entire life. He could never read enough.Alma Clement has established this scholarship through thePoestenkill Library to honor her husband and bestow a financialaward to another lover of reading.Please submit your 500-700 word essays to the PoestenkillLibrary by May 31. Sand Lake Center for the Arts presents a Sundays at theCenter workshop on June 3 at 1:30pm - “Monotype CardsWorkshop with Pat Smart” Learn an interesting and fun methodfor card making. Students will make cards with plexiglass plates.The plate is painted with water based printing ink with a paletteknife. It is then blotted with tissue and printed on a card usinghand pressure. The plate or the tissue can often be usedagain to print another image on rice paper. This year’s Memorial Day activities are hostedby the Lt. Perry Williams Post 3025, Veterans ofForeign Wars, Sand Lake Kiwanis, and The WestSand Lake Fire Company. PARADE DATE ISMONDAY, MAY 28th - THE PARADE UNITS willform at 9:00 AM on Westfall Court, complimentsof Ed Patanian for the use of his property. Theparade steps off at 9:30. THE PARADE ROUTEis east on Route 43, straight through to theVeterans Park, and then left on High School Rd.where the parade will end. The Village of Castleton-on-Hudson/Town of SchodackMemorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 28,2012, at 10AM.Memorial Day is a time of remembrance of those who gavetheir lives for our country. This year’s theme is “Honoringthose who served our country to insure our freedom”.Chairperson Doe Warland announced that following theceremonies to take place at the Mountain View Cemetery,awards will be given for floats, fire companies, youth groups,and decorated bikes. Seating will be provided for Veteransat the ceremonies. The parade will form on Boltwood Avenueand begin to march up Seaman Avenue. This year, theGrand Marshall will be George Flanders, Sr., Guest speakerwill be Vietnam Veteran, Dennis Dowds, and the CommunityAppreciation Award will be given to Al Vann Nederynen.Please note that only floats or vehicles marching in theparade will be permitted to drive into Benedict and Boltwood.Cars dropping off marchers will not be permitted to driveinto the parade line up area. Meeting for the Dewey Loeffel Landfill
Superfund Site, Town of Nassau,
Rensselaer County, New York
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold
a public information meeting to update residents and
other interested parties about activities at the Dewey
Loeffel Landfill Superfund Site in the Village of Nassau,
Rensselaer County, New York.
The Dewey Loeffel Landfill was added to the Superfund
National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites in
2011. Since that time, the EPA has conducted a series of
initial site investigations to evaluate the extent of
contamination at the site.
During the meeting, agency representatives will discuss
the results of these investigations, next steps, and
community involvement opportunities.

A host of family members, friends, government officials, andmembers of the Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Committee are
pictured following the ceremony commemorating the life andservice of WWII Army Veteran William Perry Williams.
The late 1st Lieutenant William Perry Williams, who enlisted inTroy’s Historic 105th Infantry in September, 1940 while a seniorat Averill Park High School, and, received the Purple Heart andSilver Star for his courageous battlefield actions against theenemy on New Guinea during World War II, was recognized byRensselaer County’s Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Committee andCounty officials on Monday, May 14, 2012, during services atthe County Office Building.Williams was initially deployed to Ft. McClellan, Alabama andattained the rank of sergeant in Company A. After continuingwith training in Hawaii, Williams was selected for OfficerCandidate School, thereby sent to Ft. Benning, Georgia andcommissioned Second Lieutenant upon graduation on November25, 1942. During the final three months of Williams’ service, hewas confined a hospital on New Guinea trying to recuperatefrom wounds incurred by a mortar explosion. Sadly, Williamssuccumbed to these wounds on August 6, 1944. Posthumously,
the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Sand Lake was named in1st Lieutenant Williams’ honor.“William Perry Williams wasimmediately recognized as aleader following his inductioninto the Army and rose quicklythrough the ranks. He waspart of the generation knownas the “Greatest Generation”and his actions in defense ofour nation and the principleswe hold so dear as Americanscertainly live up to that highstandard he helped set,” saidRensselaer County ExecutiveKathleen M. GREENBUSH IN THE WAR OF 18122012 marks the 200th anniversary of the start of the War of 1812.Although no battles occurred in the old town of Greenbush(Rensselaer, East and North Greenbush) the area does have a claimto fame in the history books. The U.S. Army constructed a largemilitary post called the Greenbush Cantonment here.This several hundred acre cantonment was located near the presentday Red Mill School in East Greenbush. During the War, over5,000 troops trained here. The Greenbush location was strategicallywell placed. It was near the action occurring both in the Niagarafrontier and Lake Champlain.The commanding general, Henry Dearborn was a veteran of theRevolutionary war, and one suspects, well past his prime. Ratherthan a “fighting general” he was an “administrative general” farfrom the battlefield: think General Halftrack from the Beetle Baileycomic strip.When General Dearborn took command, the cost overruns began.He bought the land on behalf of the government for $9,000 andconstruction of the Cantonment began. It wasn’t until a year laterthat Dearborn discovered the government didn’t have clear title tothe land, so he had to pay an additional $1,250 to perfect the title.Additionally, the government purchased a large field of standingrye nearby ready for harvest. However, a cavalry unit arrivedand the horses promptly devoured the entire crop.The Cantonment consisted of eight barracks for enlisted men, threeunits for officers, the general’s house, surgeon and physician’squarters, a hospital, horse stables, armory, arsenal storehouse,guard house, kitchens and many latrines.I haven’t discovered if local units were stationed at the Cantonment.Major John Defreest, who lived in what is now North Greenbush,was an officer in Col. Carr’s New York Militia. Carr was one ofseveral Rensselaer County soldiers who served in the War.Depending on which story you believe, Col. Carr’s soldiers arrivedjust in time to turn the tide of the Battle of Plattsburg, or were toolate to tip the balance for an American victory.After the war ended in 1815, the government continued to stationa few soldiers at the Cantonment and finally sold the property toHathhorn McCulloch for $8,007 in 1831.Today the only building left on the site is one of the officers’ formerquarters and is a private residence.

As legislative representatives of District 4, including the townsof Schodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provideresidents with an update on actions taken at the April 10, 2012legislative meeting.We continued our efforts to protect taxpayers and save moneyduring these challenging economic times. The Legislatureunanimously approved a refinancing of existing county debtfrom various county and Hudson Valley Community Collegeconstruction projects, with the refinancing expected to savethe county $800,000. The refinancing is made possible in partthanks to the county’s solid financial and bond ratings followingindependent reviews.Legislators also unanimously supported resolutions aimed atreducing fraud and abuse in the welfare system. Majoritylawmakers sponsored resolutions calling for state laws to bedrafted to require welfare recipients to be drug tested, and forfood stamp recipients to be required to display photoidentification when accessing the service.We also approved resolutions for the purchase of materials forthe repair and improvement of county roads and bridges.Improvement work has started on some county roads and isexpected to continue during the spring and summer.Legislator confirmed the appointment of John Turi of Hoosick aspublic defender. Legislators also commended retiring PublicDefender Jerome Frost, who thanked county officials for theirsupport for the officeWe were also pleased to join in recognizing the 50th anniversaryof the founding of Holy Spirit School in East Greenbush. HolySpirit has educated a number of students from southernRensselaer County and we congratulate the school on thisimportant milestone.After nearly two decades of service to the county helping ensurecounty buildings and Hudson Valley Community College buildingswere safe and accessible, David O. Kelly passed away. Letter to the Editor: I have sent the following to the “OUR” NassauLake Park Improvement Association (NLPIA) Board of Directors,but feel it is my duty to let ALL members know exactly how certainBoard members have decided to handle membershipsconcerns...The Board should be acting on behalf of its membership- not acting like they themselves own the NLPIA property.Unfortunately, this behavior has been going on for years...somethinghas got to change!I was the Secretary on the Board of Directors (2008-2012). I havespent countless hours volunteering my time over the years. Iresigned on 3/23/12 due to constant arguing and getting very littleactual work accomplished. I would like to start off by explainingwhat happened during the Board meeting held on 5/2/12.I respectfully asked the Board’s permission to speak on an issuethey were currently discussing, or I could wait and discuss it duringthe membership meeting that takes place after the Board meeting(where I would be fully involved in the discussion). I was givenpermission to speak. I voiced my concerns along with concerns ofothers. During the discussion, a Board member decided to abruptlyend my involvement. I was told (and NOT politely) to “SIT DOWNAND SHUT UP”, I was no longer a member of the board, notallowed to talk, the discussion with me was over and it was now aBoard issue.As a member of this association and former Board member - I AMAPPALLED BY THE WAY I WAS TREATED. THIS BEHAVIOR ISUNACCEPTABLE!I am sure members would have been interested in hearing what Ihad to say and would NOT want me to “SIT DOWN AND SHUTUP”. It was the members of the NLPIA that convinced me to run forthe Board to assist with changes that were and are so desperatelyneeded. Letter to the Editor: It seems whenever Democrats gain controlof Town Board, there’s an accountability gap. No matter whatquestions are asked, the Democrat responses are always thesame: “Thank you.”In the past, if questioned about financial figures, the answer:“Thank you.” If asked about what was being put in the formerlandfill, the answer: Thank you. If asked why decisions weremade without the full Town Board’s knowledge, the answer:Thank you. And so on.I’m not writing to show how polite Supervisor Fasoldt is, but toexpress disappointment that despite her promise to work withand for everyone, the Supervisor’s reverting to the “same old,same old” of previous Democrat administrations: No answers;no accountability.In watching the broadcast of the March 14 Board Meeting,questions were asked about the purchase of a new $30,000wheelchair accessible van: Was there a survey to determineneed for the van? Fasoldt: “We’ll do that later.” What aboutthe cost of a driver and the insurance? Fasoldt: “Thank you.”How can the Board approve this expenditure with a bare bonesbudget that denied employees even a small raise? Fasoldt:“Thank you.” Why does the Town need a van service when theCounty (to whom we pay taxes to support this service) andother resources already offer transportation to seniors anddisabled individuals? Fasoldt: “Thank you.”To hear the purchase of the van was already approved at anuntelevised workshop instead of at a Board meeting, was badenough. To see the Supervisor had no answers to the questionsasked, and was unwilling to seek answers, is irresponsible.As taxpayers face more demands on tight budgets, we can’tafford to have our Town Board make decisions on what mightbe nice to have if we don’t need it or can’t afford it. On Saturday, June 2nd, the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Parkand Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center will be hostingthe Nineteenth Annual National Trails Day - the nation’s annualcelebration of trails. Both parks invite volunteers of all ages to helpclean up and improve trails on Saturday morning and indulge inthe trail activities they enjoy most in the afternoon. AP athletics experienced one of the busiest weeks yet as thespring season comes to a close.The Softball team played five games this week. On Monday,the Warriors took on Columbia. Unfortunately, after AP hadbeen ahead most of the game, in the end, Columbia took thevictory 4-2. Great game to Kelly Donnelly, Kenzie Bump, andTorey Chenette who all had game changing plays. OnWednesday, AP played Guilderland and couldn’t pull out avictory, losing 11-6. Unbelievable performance to Kenzie Bumpwho hit a grand slam! On Thursday, the girls played underlights against Mohon and won 9-5. Several singles and a timelyhit from Shannon Johnson combined with a double play byMolly Fryer to pull out the victory. Finally, on Friday, the girlshad their senior night, taking on Bethlehem, but sadly fell short,5-2. Although the girls lost, they had a great game from CaraDanish, Kenzie Bump and Torey Chenette. Also, AP hadphenomenal pitching from Caraline Wood and Brittany Meka.The lacrosse girls played their first Sectional game this weekagainst first seed Queensbury, and unfortunately, lost 16-4.Goals were scored by Andrea Bond, Molly O-Bryan with one,and Marionna Valente with two. The ladies had a great season;good luck to all the players next year!Baseball had two games this week. To begin the week, onMonday, the boys took on Columbia, and unfortunately, fellshort 12-0. AP then took on Guilderland and couldn’t quite pullout a victory, losing 4-1.Track also had an eventful week. Our athletes traveled to theEddy Invitational on Saturday and competed against over 40schools. They represented AP well. Congratulations to AndrewTario who placed second in the Boys 3200 Meter Run with atime of 9:28.04, and amazing job to Katie Vogel who took 3rdin the Girls Discus with a throw of 108-01. Katie also placedsecond in the Girls Shot Put earlier that week at the GirlsSuburban Council Championships. In the Boys SuburbanCouncil, congratulations to Kevin Otty who placed 2nd in the400 Meter Hurdles.Great season to all our spring athletes, and they are not doneyet! Recently, on the podium at the Eddy Meet, Kevin Otty isdefinitely an athlete to watch. Kevin is a senior at Averill ParkHigh School and a two sport athlete with an equal love for bothfootball and track. In track, Otty takes part in several differentevents and enjoys every one of them. He is a very dedicatedathlete that works hard even on his days off. Kevin has beenrunning track for 3 years; he started because of extraencouragement from his mom. His favorite part of running in arace is passing someone on the last 100 meters in a big race.He runs his hardest in every race and never gives up. In his offseason, Kevin plays for the Varsity Football Team at Averill Parkand has been playing football since 7th grade. Otty is a veryactive kid that likes to be on the move at all times; when he isn’trunning or playing football, he is hanging out with friends, biking,skateboarding, snowboarding or finding something athletic todo. Next year, Kevin will be attending Hudson Valley CommunityCollege and continuing his track and football careers. He will bestudying Criminal Justice and later become a New York StateTrooper. The Regional 4-H Hippology contest was recently held in RensselaerCounty and coordinated by Columbia County CornellCooperative Extension (CCE). Many Thanks to Placid Hills Stableof Brunswick for hosting the judging component of the contest.Hippology is a competitive event that tests 4-H members’ horseindustry knowledge through horse judging, a written exam,equipment identification and interactive stations on feeds,diseases, physiology, breeds and uses. This regionencompasses 9 counties in the Capital District area. Thanksgoes out to our Rensselaer County Coaches CharleneSchermerhorn and Jaclyn Paquette as well as the many countyand regional volunteers who assisted with the facilitation ofthe contest. Many practices and homework assignments weregiven in the past 3 months getting members ready for theevent. Rensselaer County members were on mixed countyteams and members competed as Novice, Juniors and Seniors.Our novice member was Kendra Davis who worked with a 4-HTeen mentor, Olivia Logue. The Junior Team consisted of twoRensselaer County members-ShiAnn Faluszczak and BrighamLogue as well as two Columbia County members – Vidar andAshley Pirrone. This combined junior team placed 2nd withShiAnn placing 2nd, Brigham 4th, Ashley 6th and Vidar 7thIndividually. All 4 juniors have qualified to represent the regionat the State Hippology Contest which will be held at the StateFair at the end of August. One Rensselaer County seniormember, Courtney Luskin also was on a combined county teamwhich was comprised of Kassie Hetherly of Albany County,Arhianna Fleres and Victoria Subik both of Fulton/Montgomery.This combined senior team placed 2nd and Kassie placed 1st,Arhianna 3rd, Courtney 6th and Victoria 7th individually. Theyall will also be representing the region at the State HippologyContest. This event allows a great venue for challenging youthto sharpen their teamwork skills as well as their Horse Industryknowledge. Another benefit to the event is providing anenvironment where youth from different counties can get toknow each other and start developing life long networks.Thanks one more time to our coaches, parents and volunteerswho made the practices and contest possible. Sheriff Jack Mahar joined local motorcycle riders Saturday, May12th, for the 6th Annual Rossman Memorial Poker Run to benefit theCapital Region Miracle League.The Capital Region Miracle League offers programs and socialevents for children of all ages with special athletic needs. TheCapital Region Miracle League offers baseball, basketball,bowling, football, soccer and track & field to special needsathletes of all ages from Upstate New York. All baseball, footballand soccer games are held at the Jaime M. Adams Field in EastGreenbush, NY. The field is the first multi-sport turf field forspecial needs athletes in the United States. Basketball gamesare held at the Boys and Girls Club in Rensselaer, NY, whilebowling takes place at Spare Time in East Greenbush. All sportsand social activities are provided at no cost to participants.Sheriff Mahar was there to support enthusiastic riders whotraveled the country roadways of scenic Rensselaer, Columbiaand Berkshire counties for this worthy cause.The ride began at 11:30 AM, departing from Quigley’s restaurantin East Greenbush. Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Highway Patrolcars escorted over 100 motorcycle supporters in the MiracleRide providing safe passage to their final destination in AverillPark, NY.

The birth of the church will be celebrated on Sunday, May 27,2012, The Day of Pentecost, at Nassau and StuyvesantReformed Churches. It is the day in which the church celebratesGod’s gift of the great counselor, the third person of our triuneGod given to bear witness to Jesus and guide us in speakingthe truth about him to the world. In the sermon, based onActs 2:1-21 and titled, “The Gift of God’s Holy Spirit,” theReverend Edward L. Van Kampen will point to the many differentdimensions of the Spirit in its power and presence with us.The Nassau Reformed church worships at 11 a.m. in its chapelat 43 church Street, one half mile east of the only traffic lightin the village. Those worshipping at Nassau Reformed areencouraged to bring plants with flowers the colors of the flameused to symbolize the Spirits coming on Pentecost. The flowerswill decorate the chancel during worship and will be planted inour memorial garden at some point following worship.The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships at 9 a.m. in itssanctuary at the corner of Church Street and Route 9J, in thehamlet of Stuyvesant. Red geraniums will decorate the chancelin reminder to the worshippers at Stuyvesant Reformed of theHoly Spirit’s continual and active presence in their lives.
