LARGEST COMPRESSOR STATION inNORTHEAST PROPOSED for NASSAU

Letter to the Editor: I am writing in regards to the environmentaleffects of the proposed Northeast Energy Direct or NED Pipelineand compressor station in Rensselaer County. In the town ofNassau, on Clark’s Chapel Road, Kinder Morgan wants to buildthe largest compressor station in the Northeast with 3 Titan250 gas turbines that are ~ 34 x 12 x 12 ‘ in size on a 10 acreindustrial complex. This station will emit continuous light andnoise up to 55 dcb at the nearest house. When blow downsoccur to release the pressure in the pipeline, the noise can bedeafening and toxic chemicals are released with the naturalgas. These chemicals can cause cancer and affect hormonaland nervous systems, particularly in children. There are farmsand fifty children within a mile of this compressor station. Howcan we allow this enormous compressor station to be built in arural area and destroy the lifestyles of our neighbors just to fillthe coffers of billionaires who live far from our state andcounty? What if it contaminates the soil and drinking water ofpeople who live in the area around this station and pollutes theSchodack aquifer? Come to an informational session, 7/7/15,5:30PM dinner and 6:30PM meeting in the annex behind St.Mary’s church in Nassau to learn how the upcoming scopinghearings affect FERC’s decisions on the NED pipeline.~ Herbert Dietrich, NassauEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

OPEN LETTER to the SCHODACK

TOWN AND PLANNING BOARDSLetter to the Editor: On June 23, representatives of theBirchwood neighborhood off Rt-9 met with Supervisor Dowdsand Planning Director Fuda. We thank them for this meeting, because in it we learned that the Schodack Zoning Bookcontains a critical error. In 1994, when the Planning Boardcreated the concept of a PD-3 zone for the western side ofthe RT-9 corridor, it was stated that “the purpose of the PD-3zone is to create light commercial uses such as office parks, shopping centers and corporate centers that will not generateheavy truck traffic.” We learned that this phrase never madeit into the Zoning Book, which is now the town guide fordevelopment in our town. Because of this clerical error thatoccurred during a previous administration, both residents andtown officials have experienced untold stress, health problems, bad publicity, high legal fees, and heated town meetings. PD-3 zoning was never intended to divide the town, and that’swhy no one spoke out against it at the onset. It was obviousthat its intent was to attract businesses that are compatiblewith preexisting residential neighborhoods. We are asking members of the town government to correctthe Zoning Book with regard to PD-3. This clerical error hastied the Town’s hands by requiring the approval of inappropriatewarehousing projects, and has caused an injustice to Schodackresidents, especially those residing along Rt-9. Correctingthe Zoning Book is simple, it’s a win-win outcome, and it’s theright thing to do. We respectfully ask the Town to fix this errorin the Zoning Book so that the discord caused by this omissionwill be finally be over. For the sake of our town and theprospects for its future, for the people who live in and nearthe PD-3 zone, and for the legacy of the Dowds administration,we will not rest until the PD-3 zoning is defined as it wasoriginally intended. After all that has happened, we areconfident you will see this as the way forward.~ Submitted by Barbara and David Spink on behalf of theMembers of Birchwood Association, SchodackEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

RUNNING ON A RECORD OF RESULTS

Letter to the Editor: When Keith Langley was asked to run forTown Supervisor in 2011, he made a commitment to conducthis campaign in a positive and productive manner. As someone who has worked with Keith since 2012, I am proudthat he has stayed true to that commitment, despite a seriesof unfair personal attacks and grabs for power by politicians inthe town. He has been dedicated to his duties as Supervisor, and focused on performance, not political games.Residents should look at Keith’s record. He has kept taxesbelow the state tax cap, and never proposed a tax increase. He has appointed qualified members to town positions, undertaken a needed improvement of the town sewer facilityand maintained important town services. He has helped attractnew retail and professional business to our town and works torevitalize the 9 & 20 corridor.Keith has also significantly reduced the large debt he inheritedand continues to work to place the town on a better fiscalfoundation. He has done so despite regular attacks that areunfair to a man who has spent his entire life in East Greenbushand devoted so much to our town.My hope is that all candidates remember to conduct themselvesin a manner that is respectful to our town. Our town deservesa campaign that is respectful and positive without disrespectingpolitical opponents. I am proud that Keith is seeking re-electionand choosing to focus on his record of accomplishment andvision for the town, just as he did during his first campaign.Residents also deserve a campaign focused on ideas andsolutions rather than damaging partisan games. Our town istoo important for an endless cycle of attacks andmisrepresentations.~ Meaghan Hart, East GreenbushEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

SAND LAKE AMBULANCE BLACKLISTS

POESTENKILL AND ITS SCHOOLSLetter to the Editor: If a woman is giving birth insouth west Poestenkill, less than one minute drivefrom the Sand Lake Ambulance station, and MohawkAmbulance, Poestenkill’s service provider, requestsmutual aid, Sand Lake Ambulance will refuse to respond. If a Sand Lake child playing in a Twin Town Little League game inPoestenkill is injured, and Mohawk is out on a call and requestsmutual aid, Sand Lake Ambulance will refuse to respond. If a student at Algonquin Middle School suffers an injury at school, and Mohawk requests mutual aid, Sand Lake Ambulance will refuseto respond. Over 40% of the children at Algonquin Middle Schoolare Sand Lake residents. The Chief of the Sand Lake Ambulance confirmed this at the June 10Sand Lake Town Board meeting. This policy was established in theSand Lake Ambulance’s Nov. 13, 2014 document titled “Guidelineon mutual aid and ALS requests”. This document states: “SLA willnot respond to calls for the Town of Poestenkill except for MCI(mass casualty incidents) or disaster events. Crews should advise‘Sand Lake is unavailable for that request’”.This policy directly contradicts the SLA Bylaws which state that thepurpose of SLA is “To provide emergency medical care andemergency and non-emergency transportation withoutdiscrimination, at any and all times possible to those who havesuffered personal injuries, illnesses or otherwise require suchtransportation, with the Town of Sand Lake...and the surroundingtowns upon requests for mutual aid.”SLA provides mutual aid to all of the towns that border Sand Lake,EXCEPT Poestenkill.I have had 2 meetings with Sand Lake Ambulance where I tried toconvince them that they should provide mutual aid to Poestenkill inthe same way they provide mutual aid to East Greenbush and NorthGreenbush. They refused. On June 10, 2015 I asked the Sand LakeTown Board if they would direct SLA to change their policy. In aJune 23, 2015 telephone conversation, Flora Fasoldt, Sand LakeSupervisor, told me that the Board will not take any action on myrequest.People who live, travel, work, play and go to school in Poestenkillget first rate ambulance service from Mohawk Ambulance andPoestenkill Fire Company First Responders.I compiled Mohawk ambulance response reports for a five monthperiod and found that Mohawk requests mutual aid about once permonth. I am not asking for a free ride for people who happen to bein Poestenkill at their moment of need. SLA bills for their service andtherefore will be paid by the patient, or the patient’s insurancecompany.Sand Lake residents should contact Supervisor Flora Fasoldt,518-674-2026 Ext. 12, and Robbie McCue, President of the SandLake Ambulance Company, 518-674-2221, and demand that theSLA provide mutual aid to Poestenkill residents, students and ourvisitors.~ David Hass, Councilman, Town of PoestenkillEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement ofthe Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible

IT’S TIME TO ENJOY LOCAL FRESH STRAWBERRIESFrom Bruce Robertson, Community Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension/Rensselaer County:Though strawberries are available in grocery stores year ‘round ~ importedfrom thousands of miles away in the winter ~ there is nothing like fresh, localberries we wait for all year. They’re in-season for a limited time now, so get ‘embefore they’re done. Their flavor and color are nearly beyond words to describe. So, too, are the nutrients fresher; berries begin losing their optimum vitaminlevels the minute they are picked.Strawberries can be enjoyed just by themselves, or as a topping to cereals oryogurt. Then, too, there are strawberry jams and pies and smoothies. Here is

a recipe featuring not only the in-season strawberries, but also spinach, which is available now.If you don’t like almonds, or can’t find them in stores, be creative and use cashews or walnuts.

STRAWBERRY SPINACH SALAD

Yields about 8 servingsINGREDIENTS:1 TBS poppy seeds2 TBS sesame seeds3/4 C slivered almonds1 lbs. spinach, washed, dried and torn into bite-size pieces1 pint strawberries, slicedNon-stick cooking spray

Strawberry Dressing:1 1/4 C strawberries1/3 C sugar3 TBS orange juice1 TBS white wine vinegar1 TBS canola oil

DIRECTIONS:Combine all Dressing ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth. Refrigerate until serving.Spray cooking spray on nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add almonds; cook and stir until lightlytoasted, 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.Combine spinach, strawberries, poppy seeds, sesame seeds and almonds.Pour half of dressing over and toss. Add more dressing as desired. Serve at once.Nutrition Analysis: 110 Calories; 2 grams fat; 5o mg sodium; 4 grams fiberSource: Adapted from Farm Fresh RecipesFor more information: Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County, 61 State Street,Troy, NY12180 (518) 272-4210 or http://rensselaer.cce.cornell.edu/

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”The Joyful Noise was a contemporary Christian music ministrywell known in the Capital District region and beyond, during theyears of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group ofyoung people, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into“Christian Music Ministries”.The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunatepassing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of TheJoyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”.A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reunitingand catching up. The reunion will culminate with a barbequedinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at BethlehemLutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decadeswhen young lives were forever impacted by this experience willbe sung together again. We will also be including all the parentsand family members in the Saturday night service who supportedeach of us during our “JN” years.During these early planning stages, we are interested in helplocating former members, and identifying folks to assist onvarious committees that have been formed. Please visit theFacebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a formermember and want to connect, or contact us [email protected].

2014 COUNTY AUDIT RESULTSTroy-Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino recentlyreported the results of the County’s 2014 independent auditconducted by Drescher and Malecki LLP who once again found nomaterial weaknesses or deficiencies in internal controls or accountingpractices. Additionally, there were no compliance issues associatedwith expenditures of state or federal programs. Drescher and MaleckiLLP also noted that the county has continued positive steps tofurther enhance its internal controls and best practices.Drescher and Malecki LLP pointed to the continued improvement ofthe County’s fiscal position even in the tough financial times.Through strict cost controls and sound management practices theCounty grew its general fund balance (rainy day fund) by $536,512to a total of $19,814,606. This increase in fund balance is in spite ofthe additional pressures of minimal growth in the sales tax collectionand reduced revenue from boarding inmates from other counties. While the growth in the fund balance is good news it still onlyaccounts for approximately 8.6% of the County’s operational costs, still short of the New York State Comptroller’s recommendation ofbetween 10 and 15 %. Additionally, the audit noted that while thetotal fund balance was over $19 million, just over $4 million of thosereserves have been dedicated to paying future retirement costs.Indicative of the County’s fiscal strength Rensselaer County currentlymaintains an AA bond rating from Standard and Poors. Accordingto the bonding agency any entity achieving an “AA” rating fromthem means they have a “Very strong capacity to meet financialcommitments”. Standard and Poors also noted that the “County’sbudgetary performance has been strong overall”.

COMMISSIONED TO SERVE

On Sunday, July 5, 2015, Communion Sunday at NassauReformed Church, worshippers will dedicate time to understandhow we are each empowered to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. The theme for worship on this day comes from the Gospel ofMark 6:1-13. As Jesus calls his disciples to assist him in makingproper distinctions between our ways and God’s way, our truthsand God’s truth, He warns them they might face rejection. Thepeople there, in Nazareth, knew Jesus only as a home townboy, a carpenter, and they did not accept his message or believehe was from God. We may find the same resistance to ourengaging in the ministries to which we have been “Commissionedto Serve.” Join us and come to more fully understand that allChristians are called by God for discipleship- some for theministries of healing, others for the ministries of teaching, stillothers for serving the Lord’s kingdom in any way His work is tobe accomplished. Everyone is welcome to worship with the folkat Nassau Reformed. We worship in our chapel on the secondlevel of our Church-School- Building at 43 Church Street, onequarter mile east of the only traffic light in the village.

BLUE EYES

They appear almost overnight,Always alongside a road,

Often by a mailbox.Legend has it that they represent

The spirit of a beautiful, blue-eyed blondeAppalachian girl who died from a broken heart.

Her childhood sweetheart...love of her lifeAnd baseball pitcher extrordinaire

Left her to seek fame in the big leagues.He promised to write...and to come back for her;

He did write for awhile, but then nothing.Still, she waited by the mailbox every day.

After months of pining for him,She died, late in the winter,

Succumbing to the grief of heartbreak. In the late Spring, early Summer of the following year,

Pretty blue flowers...the color of her eyesShowed up alongside the road, near her mailbox.

They spread and can now be found most everywhere;Get out and enjoy them now,

Before the roadside mowers cut them down!Haiku to remember:

Blue-eyed girl waitingBoy of Summer does not write

Now Chicory grows!~ Lloyd BarnhartWest Sand Lake
