APCSD CHANGES IN

DISTRICT CALENDARAs you know in past years, aschool year calendar wasmailed out to all families in mid-August. This year, however,we are moving to a live, onlinecalendar. In this way, changes that need to be madein the calendar can be made, and everyone will have instantcorrections available. If you, like many families, like to havethe calendar on yourrefrigerator, it is easily printedout by month, and you canstill have it available to you inthat manner.Another advantage, besidesbeing a cost savings, is thatby using an online format, thecalendar is now available toeveryone in the community, not just students and parents. In the past, copies would onlybe mailed to families of currentstudents, and formerstudents or grandparentswould not have access. Now,everyone can see thecalendar whenever they wish.If you need to request a hardcopy due to an inability toaccess the online calendar, please contact your child’sschool or the district office. The calendar can be found atwww.averillpark.k12.ny.us

ALAN MICHAELS FOR TOWN JUSTICE,

NORTH GREENBUSHRecently, I have had thepleasure of visiting with manyfel low residents of NorthGreenbush. I have beenknocking on numerous doorscampaigning, as I am runningfor Town Justice for the Townof North Greenbush. To appear on a bal lot, acandidate must col lectsignatures from voters. Ithought it was important to dothis work myself for tworeasons. First, it gave me theopportunity to meet townresidents personally. Second,

by doing the work myself, I do not owe anyone except thevoters. I walked neighborhoods and asked nearly 300 votersfor their support. With help from friends and using a personalshoestring budget, I am maintaining an independent campaign. When meeting residents, I heard how many are tired of partisanpolitics. It seems that often, helping a party is more importantthan helping citizens. My goal is to keep politics out of our courtroom. Nothing shouldinterfere with the fair dispensation of justice.I have been an attorney for 14 years; my experience includes:• 4 years as a criminal prosecutor;• 3 1/2 years employed at a local private firm where I defendedpeople and local businesses in lawsuits;• 6 years as an attorney for New York State working on complexenvironmental enforcement and energy litigation.I have extensive courtroom experience in both civil and criminallitigation, and am trained in alternative dispute resolution, including mediation, which I hope to utilize as Town Justice. Formore information, please visit me on Facebook.I have a proven commitment to our community:• Coach for rec and travel soccer, lacrosse, and assisted baseballand basketball hoop camp;• Treasurer of Averill Park Youth Basketball League;• Volunteer Junior Achievement Instructor at West Sand LakeElementary; and• Served on the Town Board. For those I have not yet encountered, I hope to meet you inthe next few months. To those with whom I spoke, again I askfor your assistance. Please vote in the primary on Thursday,September 13th, and thank you for your support.~ Submitted by Alan Michaels

AIRING OUTLetter to the Editor: The Final Environmental Impact Statementstates that there would be a “de minimis” impact on the airquality resulting from the operation of the Troy Sand andGravel’s proposed mine in Nassau. (Page 50, FEIS.) This non-impact will be a result of the facility producing 66,995 poundsper year of particulate matter, 46,800 pounds per year ofnitrogen oxides, 1,375 pounds per year of volatile organiccompounds, 7,888 pounds per year of sulfur dioxide, 10,725pounds per year of carbon monoxide and 21 pounds per yearof hazardous air pollutants (11.1 pounds per year of benzene). The Mined Land Reclamation Act, a state law, has a clausethat makes any amount of production legal, “as market conditionsdemand.” In other words, if there is a demand, the companywill fill the order. If you wish to express your reluctance to believe that thisproduction will not impact the air quality, please comment atthe town clerk’s office at [email protected]. LISA K. FOX ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FORE. G. COMMUNITY LIBRARY TRUSTEE

My name is Lisa K. Fox, and I am a candidate for a trustee

position with the East Greenbush Community Library. I have

been a resident of East Greenbush since 1995, with my husband

Tim Bender and our children, Sandy, a senior at SUNY at

Geneseo, and Dan, a freshman at Ithaca College. A graduate

of SUNY at Fredonia and Albany Law School, I am employed as

an Associate Attorney with the NYS Office of General Services,

focusing on administrative and contract law. I believe my training

and skills would make me a valuable addition to the Board of

Trustees.

I strongly believe in the importance of literacy and recognize

the critical role that the Library plays in fostering literacy and

access to knowledge. The Library is a community resource and

gathering place which my family and I have enjoyed over the

years, participating in the programming and borrowing books

and media. I am a long-time member of the Friends of the East

Greenbush Library, even recruiting my family to help out with

the book sales, the proceeds of which are vital to maintaining

the current level of library materials and programming. My

prior volunteer experience includes various school activities

(such as being a room parent, providing costumes for school

plays and organizing the Green Meadow Science and Learning

Fair) and nine years on the Supervisory Committee at SEFCU.

My volunteering at SEFCU provided me a background in

understanding the practical aspects of a business and the

necessary checks and balances. My employment as an attorney

involves complex procurement transactions and administrative

law matters, facilitating an approach that focuses on problem

solving and looking at the big picture. These skills are important

to successfully address the challenges facing community

libraries.

My family and I have gained much from the Library. I hope now

to have the opportunity to give back to our community by

serving on the Board of Trustees of this vital and vibrant

community asset. Please exercise your constitutional rights

and vote on Thursday, September 6th, from 9:00am to 9:00pm.

~ Thank you, Lisa K. Fox

SCHODACK MAY CHANGE ZONING CODELetter to the Editor: I have always thought zoning was a wayof separating business from residents and have noted manytimes when the Schodack zoning code did much to maintainthat atmosphere. The present Town Board, along with theblessings of the Planning Board, has suddenly decided toconsider some changes to allow residences to occupy the secondfloor of businesses in certain Highway Commercial areas, butonly where there is municipal water and by special permit. I donot understand what the water district has to do with it. Thismay not create a problem in some instances, but I think inmany areas, and in due time, there will be repercussions whichcould cost taxpayers to defend. Consider the recent problemswhen Dollar Tree wanted to build a huge warehouse to operate24 x 7 next to many residences. Have we not learned? Whydoes the town require a logger to only operate from 7 AM to 5PM weekdays, 9 to 5 on Saturday and not at all on Sunday ifwe do not care about residents? Where will they draw the lineand will it be defendable in a future court case? This is justdiluting the zoning code and maybe the town could just nothave any zoning at all if this is the trend.Unfortunately, the majority of residents will never know aboutany changes as there is no longer any press coverage. Thezoning code needs to be reviewed and updated, but thiscontinues to be side stepped and instead the town board ischanging the zoning code in a piecemeal fashion. One has towonder how much research has been done before such achange is brought about? The average attendance at townboard meetings is about 8 and sometimes only 4. This certainlygives your elected officials carte blanche to act in their ownfashion. That may be what they were elected to do, but theyalso should consider your opinion. That is if you knew whattheir intentions were. There will be a Public Hearing pertainingto this proposal on September 13th.~ Ray Lemka, Schodack residentEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion

SO ONE YEAR LATER WHAT DO WE KNOW - Part Three (Contd. from last week)

As we walked around our property on Plank Road in Poestenkillon August 29, 2011 surveying the damages inside and outwhich were caused by the flood, I felt Aempty@ and as if nearly50 years of my life here were just washed away along withseveral of our possessions. But, as the days and weeks wentby, we came to really know what a great town we live in. Wewere overwhelmed by the number of people who came by tosee us and offer any help they could give as we lived in ourcamper for weeks at the Poestenkill Fire Department while ourproperty was being worked on. So, to the Town of Poestenkill,Dominic Jacangelo, our town supervisor, Toby Chadwick, ourtown highway superintendent, Fire Chief Dave Basle and thePoestenkill Fire Department in making sure we were ascomfortable as possible, the Poestenkill Businessmen’sAssociation, several area churches, family, friends, neighbors, the volunteer students from RPI, and Mr. John Rustin, weoffer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all of the helpyou gave us to get through this ordeal.~ Joyce A. Glouster, Ohio: THIS PLACE MATTERSLetter to the Editor: Back in May I was truly inspired by a CBSSunday morning segment “Ohio widower paints the town.” Ifyou google that topic you will find out about a man who wasgrieving the loss of his wife and decided to paint his peelingtown in order to keep his mind occupied. This segment wasUPDATED on Sun., 8/26. Evidently, in July, 220 volunteersshowed up in town. Their goal was realized and they painted17 houses in Glouster, Ohio. This project has gone viral, inspiring volunteers and attracting newspapers like the‘Columbus Dispatch’ to feature it twice on their front page. There are busy local business owners in OUR town who coulduse a hand with painting their buildings. Could we get togetherand help? Also, google: ‘pattern cities archive chairbombing.’ This articlefocuses on a project that is a perfect blend of creativity, volunteerism, community service AND recycling.Recycled wooden pallets are turned into beautiful adirondackstyle chairs that encouragepeople to linger in your parks and business districts - alsoenhancing curb appeal. If you are interested in more projectsgoogle: Wood pallet furniture. See ideas for planters, benchesand more. The countrywide MAIN STREET program emphasizes thatvolunteers are the key ingredientsfor change in the appearance of your town and also that babysteps can multiply intobig changes in our communities.Locally, Sand Lake experienced a wonderful weekend, the finaleof the town’s BicentennialCelebration. Westfall Village was the site of music, crafters, local food vendors and the destination of the biggest paradethat the town has ever seen. The planners were a small groupof VOLUNTEERS who worked for 4 years planning many 2011and 2012’s great events. In the spirit of giving, many town businesses totally DONATEDtheir services and equipment to the weekend event. Look whathappens when we work together! This place matters.Dee Erickson ([email protected])

REPUBLICAN PRIMARY THURSDAY 9/13

In my opinion, there is only one choice for the State Senate andthat is Kathy Marchione. Roy McDonald (who claims to be aRepublican ) wants to continue on as your representative forsame sex marriage and the bathroom bill. He deserted Rupublicansand the State Senate Republican Majority to vote for the SameSex Marriage bill. He has hosted a number of other bills whilebeing in the majority, yet has been successful in getting less than1/2 of the passed (Tell you anything?). Kathy, a ConservativeRepublican, is the current Saratoga County Clerk, well liked byher constituents and has contributed to the efficiency of County/Town Governments by reducing Government costs. She is afriend of Veterans, sponsoring a savings program for them in herCounty. After meeting with her on more than one occasion I amconvinced that if she is elected to the Senate, she, unlike Mr.McDonald, will look out for our Christian values and interest. She, unlike Mr. McDonald, believes that marriage is between aman and a woman. She, unlike Mr. McDonald, will fight to getour fair share of State tax dolalrs for our schools and not accepta trickle down token. She, unlike Mr. McDonald, will fight toreduce the size and expense of State Govenment thereby reduc-ing some of the tax burden we currently are saddled with. Myvalues coincide with Kathy’s and I hope yours do too and thatyou will support her in the upcoming primary and general elec-tion.~Terry Turner & Joe JohnsonBoth Former Sand Lake Republican Town Chairmen & Committeemen

HUNGRY IN

AMERICA

I saw him shuffling down theaisle,

I tried to catch his eye andsmile

And say a friendly word ortwo

As strangers nowadayssometimes do.

He passed me by without aglance,

I thought perhaps I’d have achance

To help find what he’sshopping for

In this great supermarketstore.

I saw his clothes were oldand worn,

I saw his face, sad andforlorn,

Deeply lined and ashenwhite

Deep-set eyes, no longerbright.

I saw him take a chicken-wings pack,

Look at the price, then put itback.

I walked past him withoutstopping

And hurried away to finishshopping.

But when I reached thecashier’s line

I saw his cart in front ofmine;

The few food items heplaced there

Would still leave hiscupboard bare.

When you go shopping, keep in mind

Some things you don’t want, you may find:

A person who looks sad andold,

Struggling in a world growncold.

Do not look in a shopper’scart

Because some times itbreaks your heart.

We who are blessed cangive our thanks

And donate to our kind foodbanks.

BYBYBYBYBY Al Hayner Al Hayner Al Hayner Al Hayner Al Hayner

Sometimes we take things for granted. Sometimes we don’t realize thesacrifice of some of our neighbors on our behalf. Sometimes we do notrealize the time and effort put in by them to keep us safe. We are verylucky in our Town because we have over 100 dedicated men andwomen who constitute our Volunteer Firefighters. The Town has three fire companies: West Sand Lake, Averill Parkand Taborton. I have been privileged to be a Social, non-responder,member of the Averill Park Fire Company. After watching them upclose and personal I have developed a strong respect for all volunteerfirefighters in the USA. Most residents do not realize that these men and women have to take manycourses to qualify to be firefighters. Furthermore, they give up several evenings a month that aredesignated as training sessions. Those sessions are dedicated to review past courses as well asinstruct the company on new techniques and the proper use of new equipment so as to be asefficient and safe at a fire scene as possible. Remember, they are all volunteers-No one is paid! As with most rural fire companies, we operate in an area that for the most part does not have firehydrants. This is a very important distinction between our companies and those of a major urbancenter. Most times, city firefighters can roll up to fire scene, hook up to a hydrant, and not have toworry about a continuous water source and usually only have a sidewalk to traverse to get to a fire. Our firefighters may have to lay long lines of hose up a driveway. Furthermore, pumpers only carry 1000 gallons of water. Two 1 ¾” inch attack lines will use 125gallons of water a minute each. That translates into 4 minutes of water before the tank runs dry. There are not too many structure fires that can be put out in 4 minutes. That is why each companyhas multiple pumpers and the Incident Commander will often request more pumpers from the mutualaid companies so that there is an adequate supply of water on hand. On many occasions, even this is not sufficient. In those cases he will set up a pumper relay toa water source, such as the dry hydrant on Glass Lake Road, to constantly bring water to thescene. However, all this does not preclude seeing your neighbors run into burning buildings, evacuate the elderly or youthful, climb onto roofs to ventilate a building or work in humid stifling heator bitter freezing cold at ungodly hours of the morning. Those are the heroes among us.
