ARSENIC AND OLD LACE

The Highlight Acting Troupe will be presenting Arsenic and OldLace written by Joseph Kesselring and directed by Ron LeVan.Arsenic and Old Lace is a comedy about the sweet old Brewstersisters (Lucy Breyer, Georgia Visconti), who are beloved in theirBrooklyn neighborhood for their many charitable acts. One charitywhich the ladies don’t advertise is their ongoing effort to permitlonely bachelors to die with smiles on their faces—by serving saidbachelors elderberry wine spiked with arsenic. When the sisters’drama-critic nephew Mortimer (A.J. Printsky) stumbles onto theirsecret, he is understandably put out—especially since he has justbecome engaged to Elaine Harper (Rebecca Hoffay). Given thehomicidal tendencies of his aunts, the sinister activities of his escaped-convict older brother Jonathan (Mark Simpson) and the disruptivebehavior of younger brother Teddy (Mark Strock)—who isconvinced that he’s really Theodore Roosevelt, and runs aroundthe house yelling “CHAAAAARGGGE”- he is hesitant to marry Elaine.Further complications ensue when the murderous Jonathan Brewsterarrives home, with his snivelling accomplice Dr. Einstein (Alan Angelo)in tow. When Jonathan learns that his darling aunts have killedtwelve men, he is incensed—they’re challenging his own record ofmurders. The show dates are Oct. 14, 15, 21, 22 at 8 p.m. and Oct.16 and 23 and 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $12 forseniors and students. The performance will take place at theBrunswick Grange, Rt. 7 and Rt. 142 in Brunswick. For reservations, call Christine at 663-0007.

NORTH GREENBUSH COUNCILMAN

LOU DESSO TO SEEK RE-ELECTION

“People, not Politics”Four years ago, NorthGreenbush town govern-ment was racked withcontroversy and legalturmoil, and residents wereburdened by a debt of over$400,000.Concerned about the futureof a town they love, a bi-partisan group of residentscame together and decidedto make a difference. One ofthose, Louis J. Desso, wasdriven by a desire to giveback to a community that has

given so much to the Desso family. Now, four years later, Desso and a bi-partisan team of publicservants have compiled an impressive record. There has beenno tax increase during the past four years, the debt inheritedfrom the previous Town Board has been erased, and importanttown services have been improved.“I ran on a promise that reducing the financial burden carriedby taxpayers would be my number one priority and that I wouldwork hard to ensure budget stability. I believe I have madegood on that promise and will continue to do so if re-elected”,stated Desso.Recently, Desso renegotiated the Town’s sales tax revenueformula with the county netting over $200,000/yr. for the Townand supported restoration of county funding for the NorthGreenbush library.Along with protecting taxpayers, Desso and the bi-partisanteam have also revitalized the town’s youth and summer campprograms, staged a series of summer concerts that brings thecommunity together, and worked in a cooperative and non-controversial manner. “We are proud that we have been ableto protect taxpayers, provide and improve needed servicesand protect the special qualities that make North Greenbushsuch a great place to live. We have done this by focusing onthe needs of the people, not the politicians,” said Desso.“That sums up my philosophy in governing. It’s about people, not politics,” he added.Desso and his wife Deb have been proud to call North Greenbushhome for three decades, and proud to have raised their family, including son Jon, a graduate of Rensselaer PolytechnicInstitute, and daughter Jamie, a graduate of Russell Sage.Deb and Lou recently celebrated the birth of their granddaughterCamilla and grandson Nicholas.

CANDIDATE FASOLDT RESPONDS

Letter to the Editor: In last week’s Advertiser, Joe Johnsonquestioned whether I could perform the duties of TownSupervisor. Mr. Johnson didn’t say so, but he is the TownRepublican Chairman. My years in public service as a councilperson, legislator andeducator have provided me with skills necessary to meet thedemands of the Supervisor’s Office – a job that has alwaysbeen part-time.Past Supervisors, with diverse backgrounds and financialcircumstances, each managed the office differently. Forexample, in 2003, I voted in good faith to give a salary increaseof $10,000 to Mr. Robelotto making his salary $35,202. Inreturn, he agreed to serve in two positions - Supervisor andBuilding Inspector. This agreement didn’t work out.The Town Board later learned that he was operating his owncompany during the week in addition to working on Friday’s andweekends for another business. He ceased performing theduties he had agreed to; but continued to increase his salary to$44,000 while adding positions to the town workforce. Forthese and other reasons, the Democrats declined to endorsehim, laying the groundwork for his conversion to another politicalparty. I don’t think that’s the kind of full-time Supervisor peoplewant or deserve.I will do whatever it takes to ensure that the duties of thisoffice are faithfully fulfilled – being informative and accessibleas I have always been. I will reduce the Supervisor’s salarysignificantly – restoring it to an affordable level. I have nointentions of hiring anyone.Taxpayers demand value for the money they pay officials. They are tired of ‘politics as usual’ at their expense. Lastweek’s article forces me to respond and distracts from the realdebate we are all entitled to have on the future of Sand Lake.Challenging times call for local officials to be creative, responsiveand visionary leaders with a work ethic and determination thatis untiring. Residents of Sand Lake will not and should nottolerate incompetence, laziness and indecision. I will put SandLake 1st and taxpayers can expect more.~Flora Fasoldt, Candidate - Sand Lake SupervisorEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

JOHN GLASSER FOR SAND LAKE COUNCIL20 YEARS OF PUTTING SAND LAKE FIRST

With the endorsement of theRepublican, Independence andConservative Parties, John Glasseris seeking his 6th four year term asSand Lake Councilman thisNovember. “It is certainly rewardingto add the support of the Inde-pendence Party and ConservativeParties to my Republican nomination”Glasser said, “and I’m looking

forward to serving our town as your Councilman for another 4year term. During the 20 years that I’ve been on the TownBoard, Sand Lake has changed and grown and the challengesof government to do “more with less” have never been moreimportant. My promise to you is continue to be fiscallyconservative and to diligently seek every opportunity tomaintain and increase services to you while keeping costs andtaxes low. I know the rest of the Sand Lake Good GovernmentTeam, Steve Robelotto, Councilman Ray Turner, Town ClerkBarbara Biittig and Receiver of Taxes Jill Quell, along withCouncilman Paul Splain all share my view of town government, and I hope you give us the opportunity to show you what agood job we can do. As my running mate, Steve Robelottosaid earlier, this will be a fantastic team of dedicated andtalented public servants working together to make 2012 theyear that Sand Lake gets back on the right track of costeffective good government that puts every resident of SandLake First.”During John Glasser’s 20 years on the Town Board, he hastaken the lead or supported important initiatives such as;secured $15k grant for updates to the Town Beach, improvements to the Butler Park Stage area, creating thedoggie walking path at Butler Park, approving needed repairsand improvements to Town Hall, acquisition of solar lighting, and so much, much more while at the same time doingeverything to keep town taxes low. SMITH RUNS FOR NORTH GREENBUSH

SUPERVISOR

Charles Smith of Wynantskill is running forNorth Greenbush Town Supervisor after adecisive victory against professionalpoliticians who tried to run the samecandidate on all ballot lines.Despite getting into the race late after anunexpected withdrawal of anothercandidate, Smith secured a place on theballot and preserved the right of votersto choose between candidates rather thanhaving one candidate imposed on them.“I am extremely grateful to voters wholistened and went to the polls to ensureNorth Greenbush would have a realelection with choices for all voters. It is my intention to representevery town resident by bringing a new direction that emphasizesreal progress on the issues our community faces, stated Smith.Smith identified a number of concerns he and his team intend toaddress to improve the quality of life in North Greenbush. Gettingaction on the building of the I-90 connector is critical to relievinglong commutes and creating new growth and jobs along thecorridor leading to the RPI Tech Park. The project has languishedtoo long and the federal funds set aside for it may disappear ifwe don’t move.Other issues include solutions to the constant flooding alongthe Wynantskill Creek which is a major problem for so manyhome owners. Smith stated his intention to make certainHighway Department funds are not spent on other towndepartments so that Highway Superintendent Mark Premo hasthe money he needs to improve the infrastructure and addressthe flooding.Smith also listed other concerns he will address including usinga $35,000 State grant to revitalize Main Avenue before it too islost due to inaction. It is also vitally important that the townproperly equip the Police Department with new cars on a setschedule for safety and avoidance of costly maintenance.Smith is a business professional and is running with Ernest Kernand Andria Fisher for Council, Mark Premo HighwaySuperintendent and Michael Derevlaney for Receiver of Taxes. He resides in Wynantskill with his wife Pat and has two childrenattending their alma matter, Siena College.

E.G. CANCELS SATURDAY IN THE PARK

-NO RESCHEDULE-

It pains me to report that we had to cancel our Fall Festivalthat was scheduled for this past Saturday, October 1st. Adecision had to be made by 8am, and unfortunately at thatpoint, it was raining too heavily for several of our rented itemsto be set up, with forecasted winds and rain throughout theremainder of the day. Along with the poor conditions of thepark due to rain overnight, there could have been potentialelectrical issues and it was a matter of safety and conveniencefor the vendors, bands and the local families. No one is moredisappointed to report this than me, and I graciously thankeveryone who was planning on participating and attendingthis event. When preparing for an event of this capacity, itmakes it very difficult to schedule a make-up day as manyvendors and rented items were scheduled precisely on theoriginal date. Hopefully, we will have better luck in years tocome and remember to continue patronizing local businessesand farms in our town. Thank you all for your understanding.~Daniela Lanni, Director of Community and RecreationalServices

PREMO ISSUES BUDGET WARNING

North Greenbush Highway Superintendent Mark Premo hasreacted to the 2012 Budget with a warning to taxpayers. Lastyear the Town Board took more than $71,000 in Highway PILOTfunds from the Highway Department to pay for a General Fundspending spree rather than to accept the proposed cuts of theSupervisor.During the year, I have watched the fund balances in theHighway Budget change without my knowledge or my approval. The numbers have changed without my approval or transferresolutions from the Town Board. Premo noted that more than$370,000 in set aside highway funds were in his budget at thebeginning of last year and in the last few months, balancesheets have shown amounts as low as minus $90,000 oneweek and plus $50,000 the next. While I was able to submit a budget proposal for 2012 thatshould not raise the Highway Tax rate, which is a separate taxfund from the General Fund, my warnings not to use the HighwayPILOT Funds for General Fund expenses will force a significantshortfall in the next budget (2013) with no cushion in 2012 forunexpected occurrences. It appears the Town Board has used most of the Highway FundBalance leaving us in an unacceptable cash position for 2012and beyond. The Town Board should take responsibility for the money theyneeded to fund their spending in Town Hall and to stop takingHighway PILOT Funds to pay these expenses. Now I do nothave funds needed to address added expenses of increasedhealth, pension and contract costs expected and forecastedby the State Comptroller. My department provides services to the developmentsappearing all over town. Many receive tax breaks from thecounty, and we receive no direct tax revenue to provide thoseservices. Instead, we rely on PILOT (Payments in lieu of taxes)money to provide services and plan for our future which hadincluded building a long needed addition to our garage. Itappears that plan is gone because the money to build it wastaken from us.~Mark Premo, N.G. Highway Superintendent

ERNEST KERN FOR NORTH GREENBUSH

TOWN COUNCIL

Ernest Kern of Wynantskillis a candidate for the NorthGreenbush Town Board inthe November election. Herepresents a generation ofsenior citizens who areimpacted most of all by hightaxes in our State. He is 75years old and is retiredfrom the Times Union wherehe worked as a computertechnician. He is a proudveteran of the U.S. ArmyReserve. Ernie is also anactive member of St. Jude’sChurch where he is anusher. As a former Councilman who served on the Town Board for fouryears, he is familiar with town government and will not hold aconflicting elective office on the county legislature or anywhereelse. “My only service will be to the taxpayers of NorthGreenbush, not the politics of the Rensselaer CountyLegislature”, stated Kern.Mr. Kern and his running mates want to bring real progress toNorth Greenbush. His goals include action on the stagnant I-90Connector to reduce commute times and bring new jobs andgrowth to the RPI Tech Park at the connector’s end. He alsowants progress on the eyesore at the 4 and 43 intersection, which the current majority has allowed to become a vacant lotinstead of a retail complex.Kern also wants a solution to the persistent flooding that occurson the Wynantskill Creek that is a yearly ritual. He will enlist theArmy Corp of Engineers and ENCON to help HighwaySuperintendent Mark Premo in a resolution to the problem. Inaddition, he will vote to implement a long ignored $35,000 StateGrant to revitalize the Wynantskill business district. As a long time volunteer member of the Town HighwayCommittee, Kern will stop the continued spending of HighwayDepartment PILOT funds to pay for non highway relatedexpenses. The current majority has consistently taken thismoney instead of allowing Mr. Premo to budget it within hisdepartment. “I look forward to representing our town once again as part ofa team for real progress led by Charles Smith for Supervisor,Andria Fisher for Council, Mark Premo, Highway and MichaelDerevlany, Receiver of Taxes.

MICHAEL KENNEY SEEKS RE-ELECTION TO

PROTECT SCHODACK TAXPAYERSMichael Kenney is seeking re-election to the Schodack TownBoard, citing progress over thepast year in management oftown finances and work toprotect town taxpayers.During the past year withKenney serving as a memberof the Town Board, the townhas continued to put in placefiscally conservative policiesand stabil ize town taxes.

Careful budgeting by Schodack has also maintained importanttown services in the face of a national recession. The town’s fiscally conservative policies helped generate anupgrade in the town’s credit rating in 2011. Moody’s, arespected financial analyst, raised the town’s bond rating fromA1 to Aa3.“We have worked hard to control spending and keep taxesstable. Those efforts are generating positive results forSchodack, as seen by the upgrade of the town’s bond rating,”said Kenney.“By keeping taxes stable and improving the town’s financialmanagement, we have laid the groundwork to attract newbusiness to our town. At the same time, maintaining townservices helps us safeguard quality of life in Schodack,” addedKenney.Kenney was first appointed to serve as a member of the TownBoard following the passing of board member Ken Stinner andwon election in 2010 to fill out the remaining year of Stinner’sterm. Following his appointment to the Town Board, Kenneyalso helped coordinate the establishment of a Town Hallmemorial to Stinner.Giving back to the community has been a priority for Kenney.Several years ago, Kenney led a volunteer effort to build anew, safer and more accessible playground at Green MeadowElementary School. The project took two years and Kenneyhelped coordinate fundraising, planning and construction ofthe sprawling play area.A lifelong resident of the area, Kenney is a graduate ofColumbia High School. He and his wife Tracey are the parentsof two daughters. “I am proud to call Schodack home andwant to ensure it remains a great place to live, work and raisea family,” said Kenney.Kenney is employed by Walter S. Pratt & Sons in Rensselaer,a family-owned business which provides equipment for variousconstruction projects.

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY FROM FIRE!

The Averill Park Fire Department Encourages Residents toKeep their Homes Safe

During Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15, 2011What’s the best way to protect your family from fire? Be aheadof the game, of course. That’s why the Averill Park FireDepartment is teaming up with NFPA during the October 9-15,2011, to let our community know: “It’s Fire Prevention Week.Protect your Family from Fire!” This year’s campaign focuses onpreventing the leading causes of home fires — cooking, heatingand electrical equipment, as well as candles and smokingmaterials. Additionally, it urges people to protect their homesand families with life-saving technology and planning.”In 2009, 2,565 people died in home fires. Nearly all of thesedeaths could have been prevented by taking a few simpleprecautions like having working smoke alarms and a home fireescape plan, keeping things that can burn away from the stoveand always turning off space heaters before going to bed,”says Paul Glasser, Chief of the Averill Park Fire Department.“Fire is a dangerous opponent, but by anticipating the hazards, you are much less likely to be one of the nearly 13,000 peopleinjured in home fires each year.”Averill Park Fire Department offers the following tips forprotecting your home and family from fire: • Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside eachsleeping area, and on every level of the home (including thebasement). • Interconnect all smoke alarms in the home so when onesounds, they all sound. • Test smoke alarms at least monthly and replace all smokealarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do notrespond when tested. • Make sure everyone in your home knows how to respondif the smoke alarm sounds. • Pull together everyone in your household and make aplan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible waysout. Households with children should consider drawing a floorplan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, includingwindows and doors. To find out more about Fire Prevention Week programs andactivities, please contact the Averill Park Fire Department [email protected] or the fire station at 674-3077. Tolearn more about “It’s Fire Prevention Week. Protect your Familyfrom Fire!”, visit NFPA’s Web site at www. firepreventionweek.org.

MEET RICH MCNALLY

CANDIDATE FOR RE-ELECTION

RENSSELAER COUNTY DISTRICT

ATTORNEYWhen I decided to seek the position of DistrictAttorney for Rensselaer County a little over fouryears ago, my wife and I thought long and hardabout why we were committing the time and energyto the task. Our two daughters were 10 and 7. Therewould be a lot of time away from family. The magnitude of the impact of the office of theDistrict Attorney however cannot be understated. The job is not about box scores and bluster. Thejob is a lawyer’s job. Follow the rule of law, seekjustice for those whose lives have been disruptedby those who prey upon our children, parents, and

loved ones and do justice to the worst of the worst. The office I lead as your District Attorney has won convictions in some of the mostcomplex criminal cases I have seen in practicing criminal law in the Capital District forover twenty years: Infant Homicides; Serial Sex Offenders; Domestic Violence Homicidesand Random Gang Assaults .I was personally about to begin selecting jurors in an eight year old double homicidecase where two men were accused of brutally murdering two people in Troy in 2002,when DNA matched a new suspect. There were countless hours and volumes of workput into that case. We did not rush in. I made the call to dismiss the charges against thewrongfully accused. I directed the investigation that eventually convicted Michael Mosleyof the killings that had haunted the parents of two murdered children and this communityfor nearly a decade. Mosley is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. In the meantime I’ve led a team of dedicated attorneys and investigators that havemade the criminal justice system in this county work the way it is supposed to. I takepride in our work and our record is proof of our professionalism and effectiveness. I askfor your support and look forward to serving as your District Attorney for the next fouryears.

Adirondack Dental Assisting School, Inc. was established in 2005 in the dental offi ce of Dr. Fred Dreher.

The school is New York State licensed, as well as being Access VR (vocational rehabilitation for adults),

WIA (Work Force Investment Act) and MyCAA (military dependent program) approved.

Adirondack Dental Assisting School provides a certifi cate program which prepares students for entry

level jobs in the dental fi eld. The director, Karen Ostrander, has over 23 years in the dental fi eld as

a Registered Dental Hygienist. Karen also holds a degree in Psychology from Russell Sage College.

The program allows students to learn in a non-stressful environment, in an actual, high tech dental

offi ce. The course covers a wide range of subjects including instrumentation, sterilization and OSHA

regulations regarding infection control, radiography, and numerous dental procedures. The class size is

limited so students have an opportunity for individual attention and hands-on training, without the stress of

learning on actual patients.

Classes are offered on Fridays or Saturdays, which allows currently employed people who are looking for a career change to attend without leaving their current position. Students can obtain more information regarding the Adirondack Dental Assisting School at the website adirondackschool.com.

OVER THE MOUNTAIN THANK YOUOn September 23, 24, and 25, members of the Grafton Trail Riders (GTR) and friends participated in the61st Over the Mountain trail ride. More than 50 horse back riders rode all or part of the 25 mile ride onSaturday, from Petersburgh Pass to the GTR club grounds in Grafton, along with shorter rides in theGrafton State Park on Friday and Sunday. Although the weekend had the potential to be derailed asa result of Hurricane Irene damage to roads and trails, the rides were a huge success, and would nothave been possible without the hard work of many. We would like to thank the NYS Department ofTransportation, the Towns of Grafton and Petersburgh, Grafton State Park staff, Seagroatt’s Florist, and the individual landowners who allowed us access to their property. Thanks for your part inmaking this annual event a memorable one for all who participated. You are the greatest! ~ From The Grafton Trail Riders
