ONE ANOTHEROn Sunday, November 18, 2012, the Nassau and StuyvesantReformed Churches will continue their study of the letter written toChristian Hebrews who may have been considering a return toJudaism because of their lack of understanding of Biblical truths. The writer of Hebrews 10: 1-18 deals with the manner in whichGod, through the ministry of Christ, removed the need for anymediator to stand between God and us in order to secureforgiveness for our sins; and that offerings were no longer required. In the sermon, based on Hebrews 10:11-12, 19-25, The ReverendEdward L. Van Kampen will help us more fully understand howJesus, the one mediator for us all, provokes us to serve as thoseoffering forgiveness, displaying confidence, confessing hope, prompting love, and providing encouragement to one another.Join us and come to appreciate how we can encourage one anotherin these acts of love and kindness through our own actions. The Nassau Reformed Church begins worship at 11 a.m. in itschapel on the second level of its Church-School-building, 43 ChurchStreet (Route 20). POST-ELECTION WORK NEEDED FOR

OUR NATION

Letter to the Editor: After the election, it is now time for us toreally work on getting our country, and the world as a whole, headed in a sustainable direction. What is very seldommentioned, with conversations of the federal budget, is wherethe money is currently going. It is hard to imagine how aproductive discussion on spending can happen, without knowingthe current spending. Below is President Obama’s 2013Proposed Budget as viewed in the Office of Management andBudget (Summary of Tables S-11,12)59.6% Defense Dept, War, VA, Nuclear Weapons 6.3% Health and Human Services 6.1% Education Department 4.9% State Department 4.5% All Smaller Departments 3.9% Homeland Security 3.1% Housing and Urban Development 1.9% Agriculture Department 1.6% Justice Department 1.5% NASA 1.4% Energy Dept (Excluding Nuclear Weapons) 1.2% Transportation Department 1.0% Labor Department 1.0% Interior Department 0.7% Environmental Protection AgencyA recent letter to the editor stated the fossil fuel industrydoesn’t get federal subsidies, they only use common tax loopholes. Though that industries’ subsidies are 75% tax related, the largest tax breaks used by the fossil fuel industry are writtenpermanently in the tax code, and designed specifically for theseindustries. And of course these costs do not include the segmentof the 59.6% of the federal budget used to maintain the Navy’s5th Fleet in Bahrain, or the many other military bases, inunwelcoming countries, to “protect our economic interests”around the world. Long term, the direct federal subsidies forthe fossil fuel industry was many times that of renewable energy, but recent budgets have reversed these numbers. Renewableenergy however has temporary subsidies, that each budgetmust renew. It is important that whatever your priorities are for your federaltax dollars, you become educated on where the money iscurrently going, and contact your representatives asking themto support your priorities. Everyone understands that majorchanges are needed in federal spending, and now is the time topush for changes that are in the interest of all of the country.~ Dan Spilman, SchodackEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

Thanksgiving has to be one of my favorite holidays, familiesgetting together to give thanks for everything that they have. But this year as you sit around the table, look at all the greatfood being served and ask yourself, where did this all comefrom. At one point it all started out on a farm produced by adedicated farmer. I am sure that some of these dishes thatmake up your feast include dairy, from the dip made with sourcream, the cheese and crackers, the butter used to flavor themashed potatoes and spread on your roll, the tall glass of milk,to the whipped cream on top of your pie, dairy farmers workhard everyday to produce a wholesome product. So give thanksto someone else this year, the Farmers of America, as they putfood on our table every day. I have always been thankful togrow up on a dairy farm. Working almost every day on the farmhas helped me become a hard working and dependable person. So this year give thanks to all the farmers, especially the greatDairy Farmers of America who work hard to produce a pure andnutritious product, milk. Farmers care about their land, theiranimals and the outcome of their labor.~ Courtney Luskin, Rensselaer County Dairy Princess

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOME

FOR THE COLD SEASON

Check Fireplaces: Make sure you keep fireplace dampers closedto protect against drafts. Leaving a damper open is theequivalent of leaving a window open. Installing glass panelsover the fireplace will also help keep drafts to a minimum andultimately save you money on heating costs.Clean the Gutters: During winter, ice can build up in gutters andin order for the ice to melt and drain properly, the drains mustbe clear. Take time to clean your gutters now to prevent themfrom clogging or even bursting once colder temperatures setin.Clear Outdoor Watering Systems:Water trapped in an outdoorfaucet or irrigation system can cause a pipe to burst if icesettles inside. Make it part of your winterizing routine to ensurethat outdoor plumbing and pipes are clear before thetemperatures start to drop. It can be a tricky task, so you maywant to bring in a professional to help.

How many people at a young age can say they’ve alreadyparticipated in national and world competitions for their sport? Not very many; Yet Rudy Winkler, a senior at Averill Park HighSchool, is one of the few. Rudy began throwing shot-put anddiscus in 5th grade, then also began throwing hammer in thesummer between 8th and 9th grade. In the midst of Rudy’sfreshman year, he attended his first indoor national competition, which is what really ignited his throwing career. In 10th grade, however, Winkler began throwing only hammer which iscurrently his main focus. Rudy attends the indoor and outdoornational high school competitions every year. Through hissuccess in national competitions, Rudy was qualified to attendyouth worlds in France as a sophomore, and junior worlds inSpain as a junior in high school. Winkler has been the indoorweight throw national champion twice and won the outdoornational championship the one year he was able to attend. Hehas been in the top 10 for the youth worlds competition and thetop 20 for the junior worlds. That’s not all, however. Rudy isalso a foot away from beating the national high school record!Winkler is clearly an extremely busy guy. While he lifts weightsand throws about four times a week each, he also manages tohave a part time job, receive outstanding grades and maintaina 93.5 overall GPA. This year he is taking Physics, AdvancedPlacement government and politics, calculus, philosophy, andengineering design and development. Winkler plans onattending college next year and continuing his sport as it is hispassion. “Being a scholar athlete is huge to me. Not only am Iconcerned with my athletic career, but my academic career aswell. How I’ve balanced them throughout high school is beyondme,” says the champion. Rudy’s parents have been his mainsource of inspiration throughout his whole life and he would liketo thank them for all that they have done. He would also like tothank his coach who has tremendously helped contribute to hissuccess. Winkler is a hard working guy with success constantlyon his mind. At meets, it’s never been about beating thecompetition for Rudy. He uses these opportunities to competeagainst himself and achieve his goals. Rudy, we wish you thebest of luck in years to come and are extremely proud of all thehard work you’ve put in. It has certainly paid off!

Congratulations toour AP swimming representative! As Jessica was dominating in the swimming pool, wehad another AP Warrior making a name for us on thetrack. COUNTY LEGISLATURE REDUCES

SPENDING FOR 2013

The Rensselaer County Legislature has trimmed spending in thelegislative budget for 2013, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reidannounced.Effective cost controls mean the legislative budget is comparable tothe legislative budgets of the early 1990s.The Legislature was able to control spending by keeping staffingbelow staff levels from the previous legislative term, and by holdingthe line on equipment costs and office upgrades. There was also asavings in paper costs stemming from the conversion from paper-based products to electronic tablets. “We have worked hard to hold the line on spending over the pastyear and are proud to be able to make a two percent reduction inspending while controlling costs in the legislative offices,” said Reid. “During the past year, we have used new technology to controlcosts for paper purchases and printing, and have held off onequipment upgrades and other purchases. We are glad to see thisfiscally conservative approach paying off and helping us hold theline,” said Legislator Harry Tutunjian. The legislative budget prepared for inclusion in the 2013 countybudget totals $1.291 million, as compared to $1.327 million includedin the 2012 county budget. When mandated offices, including theAuditor and the Environmental Management Council, which aresupervised by the Legislature are included, the overall budgetincluding those offices is $1.565 million for 2013, as compared to$1.596 million in 2012.The Legislature handles research, filing and consideration oflegislative issues, local laws and resolutions, constituent issues, communication to county residents including operation of a website, broadcast of legislative meetings on cable access and preparationof a constituent guide, administers the county insurance policy, audits financial transactions, and operates a nature preserve in EastGreenbush and Schodack. “We know the fiscal challenges that taxpayers are facing, and weare making every dollar count and reducing costs wherever possibleand reasonable,” said Legislator Hank Bauer. The reduction in spending follows a savings of $141,267 in the 2011legislative operations. The savings of $141,267 in 2011 came after asavings of $129,200 in 2010 and a savings of $160,000 in 2009.

Almost a dozen years ago, Barbara and I chose to live in Sand Lake. Our dream about a leisurelyexistence went out the window before it had an opportunity to take root because of Mary and RossFrench. Sadly, they have sold their home and are moving. Somehow, Mary found out that I was a History major, and being President of the Sand Lake HistoricalSociety, she showed up at our house with a copy of her book on the History of Sand Lake which sheautographed and gave to us. How she discovered my interest in history is still a mystery to me to this day. I strongly suggestthat if you have not read this book about our history, you purchase a copy at Young’s Pharmacy. However, one thing I havelearned about her is that she is a person of great diligence, and trying to get something past her has about as much a chanceof success as trying to sneak the sunrise past a rooster! Mary was a nurse, a perfect profession for such a caring and empathetic person. She was responsible for invigorating theHistorical Society and she dedicated the revenue from the sale of her book to the Society to sustain it financially. She inducedme to serve one term as a Trustee. When my work with the Fire Department forced me to give up the position, undeterredshe induced my wife to take the job. Ross is an avuncular man of many interests in whose company you wish to linger and prolong. He has an abiding andthorough interest in 18th and 19th Century hand tools. I had a cousin with a similar hobby, and when Ross discovered that Ihad inherited my cousin’s collection, we would show the other the rarer and more unusual items of the collections with alevel of attention, curiosity and excitement that can only be representative of collectors of the esoteric. Mary and Ross are strong supporters of the Community. My wife, who works with the Sand Lake Center for the Arts, hastold me that a performance there never goes by without Mary and Ross being present. They are pillars of the Baptist Churchas represented by the fact that they truly live their Faith in a living Christianity which drives them to assist those lessfortunate. French have come into my life, and although physically leaving, will remain with me for the rest of my life. Thanks

French’s for being the caring people you are. You will be missed, but always remembered.” Barbara Berti

DRIVE

THE PHILLIPS/VANDENBERGH HOUSE

In springtime, if you are driving north on Bloomingrove Drive atthe corner of Jordan Road, you will probably notice sap bucketson the property of a stately white Greek Revival style residencewith imposing white columns. Look more closely at the home, and admire this house, which was recognized in the book,Architecture Worth Saving in Rensselaer County. It is probablythe only house with this architectural style left in NorthGreenbush. The house dates from 1843 when it was built by Joseph Phillipswho purchased the property from his brother James. The landabutted the property of the Deuel family, which was the maidenname of Joseph’s wife Eliza.Phillips was a prosperous farmer in North Greenbush and histhree daughters grew up in this home. When Joseph died in1871, the house was sold to Rutger Vandenbergh who hadmarried Phillips’ daughter Helen. He continued to farm this land of his father-in–law. In September1886, he was a victim of a terrible farming accident on hisproperty.A portable boiler, attached to a thresher was being readied inVandenbergh’s barn for use in his fields. The boiler explodedthrowing bodies into the air and destroying the barn and itscontents-the entire crop of the farm. The explosion killed DavidA. Phillips, the thresher’s owner, and Archie Hankle, theengineer. Rutger Vandenbergh was described as “more or lessinjured”.There were no reports of any damage to the house, but withhis crop destroyed and suffering from the injury which mayhave disabled him; it is probable that Rutger’s farming dayswere over.By 1900, Rutger and his wife were living with his brother Jamesin the family homestead (the Brothers Restaurant, now TacoBell on Vandenburgh Avenue). In 1910, they were still living inTroy. By 1920, the Vandenberghs who were in their 70’s livedwith their daughter and son-in- law Wilber G. Sharpe, on whatis now Manmoth Springs Road. But what of the house on Bloomingrove Drive? It has had severalowners in the past years, including the Lossoe family, a namefamiliar to many North Greenbush residents. If you are driving by the house next spring, by all means, stopto buy some maple syrup and reflect upon this beautiful homeand its history.

THE RENSSELAER PLATEAU ALLIANCE-

WHO IS THE RPA?

Looking over the Rensselaer Plateau from the newly openedDickenson Fire Tower in Grafton Park

The Rensselaer Plateau is a spectacular resource of about105,000 acres that includes the fifth largest forest in New YorkState and endless opportunities for recreation, tourism, commerce and traditional living. The Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA), established in 2006, isa diverse group of organizations and people who want toconserve and protect the forested character of the RensselaerPlateau and the many economic and environmental benefits itprovides. A grassroots organization, the RPA is people living inthe area who share a common interest in ensuring that futuregenerations will experience and value the many benefits of theplateau.Protecting our forests for the future means planning aheadand working together. We consider one of the best ways toaccomplish this is simply by talking with our neighbors. If we alldo our part, we can protect the plateau for our future. In thepast year, we talked with neighbors at many events includingpublic forums, landowner workshops, public displays, town boardmeetings and woods walks. Knowledge is a key tool tounderstanding that preservation and protection do not happenalone. Preservation and protection require collaboration andproactive actions. All of which are currently happening becausethe people and organizations of RPA talk with their neighbors, friends, municipalities and elected officials about this incredibleresource in our backyard and how we all play a role in protectingit. Come talk to us at one of our future events! Learn moreabout our events and regularly scheduled open meetings atwww.rensselaerplateau.org.
