This week AP sports experienced the silence before the storm. The fall sports were mostly over (despite my wrap up of thefall season, our cross country runner Andrew Tario hascontinued to compete), and the winter sports (basketball, bowling, wrestling, and indoor track, as well as basketballcheerleading) are stuck in the preseason. There has beenonly scrimmage competition so far, but next week will be full ofthe first games of the season. To start, Andrew Tario has extended his season even farther. On Friday, Tario competed in the highest of cross countrycompetitions, the Federations. Andrew ran against 255 ofthe best high school runners in New York State, and placed44th. Andrew averaged a 5:26 mile, and ran the race in16:52.6. Congratulations to Andrew for such a successfulseason! The rest of Averill Park athletes have not been competing ingames, but they have been developing their skills in thepreseason practices and scrimmages. The boy’s and girl’sbasketball have had their respective scrimmages throughoutthe week. The girls and boys dominated Maple Hill in bothscrimmages. The boys also scrimmaged Mechanicville on the14th. The girls took on Hoosic Valley on the 21st, and in ahard-fought game, matched the dominating opponent. In eachscrimmage, the teams had promising performances, but alsogained knowledge about how they need to grow before theirfirst game. Other sports, such as wrestling and indoor track, have notyet had preseason competitions. Although, the wrestling teamhas a tournament on the upcoming weekend. Read next week to get a full download of the next wave ofpreseason scrimmages! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at [email protected].

The basketball season here atAverill Park High School has justbegun and we have high hopesfor all our teams this year. Oneathlete, in particular, standsout above the crowd. This yearwill be Alison Nunziato’s fourthand final year on the girl’svarsity basketball team, and weexpect to see great things fromher. Al ison began playingbasketball in first grade and herposition is the shooting guard.Since then, basketball has beenNunziato’s passion, and she isconstantly putting 100% effortinto improving her game. What Alison loves most about hersport is playing the game she loves with all of her teammates;some of whom are her best friends. Games are very competitiveand intense which makes them a ton of fun for Alison. She isnothing short of extremely dedicated to her sport. In the offseason, Nunziato plays for a basketball league outside of school. They practice two hours a day, six days a week. “Being adedicated athlete means putting in the extra time each day toget better in practice and in the off season,” says the athlete.Alison has always felt inspired by her older sister, Lauren, towork hard in school and for your sport. She would like to thank all of her family for always being thereto support her no matter what. And while it seems like thisdedicated athlete is constantly headed to her next basketballpractice, she still finds the time to relax and hang out with hergood friends. Alison, we wish you the best of luck in your lastseason and last school year at APHS!

SALVATION ARMY RINGS BELLS INMEMORY OF CHRISTOPHER BASCOM

The Salvation Army bells will be rung at the East Greenbush Wal-Mart all day and evening this Saturday, December 1st, in memoryof Christopher Bascom on what would have been his 26th birthday. As in years past, family members and friends will serve as bell-ringers to honor a boy who was himself giving in nature.Christopher was 16 years old and a junior at Columbia High Schoolwhen he was killed by a hit and run driver in November, 2003. Tohonor his life and the values he held dear, it seems especiallyappropriate to commemorate his birthday by helping others. Hispassion was to make others happy; thus, his spirit and compassionfor people will be perpetuated by ringing the bells in his memory. The Salvation Army provides multiple kinds of assistance to theneedy throughout the year, and at Christmas time it focuses onhelping the less fortunate by providing them with toys, food, andother necessities. Therefore, people who want to honor Christopher,as well as contribute to a worthy cause, are encouraged to donatemoney to the Salvation Army in his memory. Such contributionsmay be made in person at the East Greenbush Wal-Mart (or whereverthere is a Salvation Army kettle) or sent directly to the SalvationArmy Headquarters Troy Corps, 410 River St., Troy, NY 12180. Ifyou want all of your donation to stay local, please write in the memoof your check “in memory of Christopher Bascom” or “Troy Corps”.

LOVE LUTHERAN CHURCHIf you have not noticed by all the decorations, sales and musicon the radio, Christmas is just around the corner. In fact, it isjust weeks away. In the Church, we call this lead up to Christ“Advent” – a time of preparation, of looking forward to thearrival of the Messiah, the babe of Bethlehem. And just as welook forward to the arrival of Jesus in our celebrations andworship, so the people of old looked forward to His first coming. The Hebrew Prophet Isaiah spoke eloquently of the comingMessiah, with words we hear in hymns and songs throughoutthe season. This Advent, Pastor Henry of Love Lutheran church will presenta series of sermons entitled, “Savior of the Nations Come,”based on Isaiah chapter 40. The sermon for the First Sundayin Advent, December 2, 2012, is entitled, “Comfort, ComfortYe My People,” taken from Isaiah 40: 1-2. Just as ancientIsrael, caught in exile, moaned for deliverance, so we seekcomfort from the troubles of the day. Isaiah calls us to look toGod from where true comfort comes.Love Lutheran Church is located at Middlesex Road andPheasant Lane in East Greenbush. Please call 477-8685 fordirections and service times.
