With Microsoft endingsupport for Windows XP, alot of people are thinkingthey have to buy a newcomputer with Windows 7or 8, but there are otheroptions. At Greenbush ComputerFare, we have beenupgrading and refurbishingVista computers for about a hundred dollars less than thosewith Windows 7. And Vista won’t be retired until at least 2017.Vista is very similar to Windows 7. The problems people hadwith Vista’s rollout, its initial incompatibility and unfamiliarity, have long since been resolved.Vista has lower hardware requirements than Windows 7 or 8,so your existing late model Windows XP computer may beupgradeable to Vista. We can evaluate yours at no cost andprovide you with more affordable options. If you choose to replace your existing PC, we have new andrefurbished computers in stock right now with Windows Vista, 7& 8, as well as Linux Mint, which is a free alternative toMicrosoft’s operating systems.Linux Mint has hardware requirements similar to those ofWindows XP. It will require some getting used to, but you can’tbeat the price. You’ve probably heard a lot of people have difficulty gettinguse to Windows 8 because it looks radically different from allprevious versions of Windows. EAST GREENBUSH:

STILL DOWN BUT NOT OUTLetter to the Editor: While Councilpersons Malone and Mangold, leftovers from the former McCabe-regime style of government, are working harder than they ever have before to incorporatebrand new words like “fiduciary responsibility, accountability, openness, and transparency” into their vocabulary, the town’sfinances continue to hobble along in a state of disrepair.Imagine a 5,000 piece jigsaw puzzle dumped in the middle ofyour kitchen table. You are told that the puzzle needs to bepieced together to form a complete picture, and it needs to bedone in record time, but while you are working feverishly toget the job done, you soon discover that numerous pieces ofthe puzzle are missing or mangled and that you have to findthem before you can proceed with completing the puzzle. Thisis the job with which town Comptroller George Phillips wastasked when he was hired in January. It is an arduous andtime-consuming task that, in the midst of all of his other duties, could conceivably take a year or more to complete; however, some residents are demanding answers now. Unfortunately, since the problem was well over a decade in the making, theanswers are simply not yet available. We, therefore, requestyour continued patience with the deep dive that is being takeninto our financial problems; it is absolutely crucial if we areever going to get out from under water. On a lighter note, please look for Supervisor Langley’s reportin the Advertiser and on the town’s website to stay informedabout the many new businesses that are coming to ColumbiaTurnpike and about other exciting new developments. SinceJanuary 1st, it has been an honor and a pleasure to work withSupervisor Langley, a man who works non-stop to upgradeand improve the town he and his family have called home theirentire lives and who has spent a generous amount of his timeacclimating Deb and me, individually, to our new positions astown board members. We truly appreciate receiving the benefitof his time, wisdom, and experience in the job he loves.~ Mary Ann Matters, East Greenbush Town CouncilEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion

The member residents facing the horrific possibilityof having a commercial development in our small nestledresidential setting, potentially being built in Schodack anddirectly impacting East Greenbush has been extremelyunpleasant. The residents of both East Greenbush andSchodack are most appreciative of the Town of East Greenbushfor supporting its taxpayers, its neighbors and surroundingneighborhood. EAST GREENBUSH TOWN BOARD MEETINGAPRIL 16, 2014

A number of residents complained that the “free pile” at the Transfer

Station was gone. Residents leave usable but unneeded items for othersto take. Supervisor Keith Langley will “look into it” (Why not just ask$68,500/year DPW Commissioner Corellis who was right there?). TheBoard unanimously approved 65-2014 In Support of Proposals for CasinoSites within the Town of East Greenbush. Developers better hurry, theNYS Gaming Facility Location Board web-site states “Applications forgaming facilities will be accepted until June 30, 2014.” CouncilpersonsSue Mangold and Phil Malone respectively introduced and seconded four“good government” resolutions:• 66-2014 Extending the Open Public Privilege Policy of the Town of EastGreenbush to Special Town Board Meetings•67-2014 Record Minutes of PreBoard Meetings• 68-2014 Review of All Non-Payroll Expenditures and Charges on aMonthly Basis• 69-2014 Timely Submission of ResolutionsA number of speakers, myself included, spoke in support of all four

Mangold/Malone Resolutions. Supervisor Keith Langley, unhearing andundaunted, voted “NO” to all four without comment. CouncilpersonsDeb DiMartino and Mary Ann Matters broke ranks with Langley to joinMangold and Malone to adopt 66-2014. Good call! Unfortunately, theymarched in lockstep with him to defeat the remaining three. “OpenPublic Privilege” affords the public the opportunity to address the Boardand will now occur at Special Meetings. Unlike previous Administrations;however, OPP is for comments only - questions are verboten! Somuch for dialog. Unable to question the Board, one resident submitted aFreedom of Information Law (FOIL) request for the Langley-suspended2010-12 Audit costs and documents. $3,000/year Deputy Supervisor EdGilbert used OPP (HUH? Deputy Supervisor - Open “Public” Privilege?)to cast 68-2014 as a waste of time and effort. Really Ed? Or does thisAdministration just not like to share? Councilperson Mangold actuallyFOILed financial information! Finally, Councilperson Malone announcedthe appointment of Andrea Smyth to the Citizens Fiscal AdvisoryCommittee (CFAC) at the end of the Meeting. Ms. Smyth is an excellentchoice for CFAC (Disclosure: I am a former Chair of CFAC.).~ Pete Stenson, East GreenbushEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of

On May 18, The First United Methodist Church of EastGreenbush, located on Gilligan Road is planning to “Change theWorld.” Churches in Florida call it “Sunday Serve.” InCooperstown, it’s referred to as “The Church is Leaving theBuilding.” It is a program designed to get parishioners out oftheir pews and into their communities. One of the pastorsinvolved said that the ultimate point is to get out and be goodstewards of humanity by practicing what they believe, ratherthan just talking about it. First United’s congregation will meetfor a brief worship service at 9:30 and then head out into thecommunity. Some will work next door at the Goff Middle School’scommunity garden. Others will travel to Menands and sortbottles and cans at the Humane Society. Visitations will bemade to area shut-ins. Clean-up crews will assist neighborswith their spring cleaning and May Baskets will be made on-sitefor those in area nursing homes. Following the projects, everyone is welcome to return to church to share theirexperiences over a light lunch. The church is inviting anyone inthe community who is interested to participate in this opportunityand to help make a difference. All are welcome. Call thechurch office for more information at 477.9693 or visit ourwebsite www.fumceg.org.

RENSSELAER COUNTY POOR HOUSE AND

M.P. DEFREEST - PART 2In my last article, I talked about the poor house, or theRensselaer County House of Industry as it was called. It wasone of the first poor houses in the state and continued operatinguntil 1926.There were some ups and downs in the operation over theyears, but a significant controversy occurred in 1875 duringthe stewardship of Acting Superintendent of the Poor , M.P.Defreest.In December 1875, the county Board of Supervisors released ascathing report regarding the administration of the House ofIndustry. Books were not being kept as the law directed, contracts were being awarded at what seemed to beunreasonably high costs. Payments made to individuals lackedexplanation as to what the receivable was or where thevendor was located. With the compliance of the treasurer, Mr.Defreest’s salary jumped from $291 to $3,874 per year.Another area of concern was the category listed as “the insane”.The law stated that if the immediate family had the means, they should pay the county the expense for housing the insaneperson. The supervisors found two instances where this wasnot being done and one of the inmates was a (distant) Defreestrelative. M.P. Defreest’s defense was that he thought he hadbeen complying with the law and that the auditors neverinformed him otherwise. I can’t find if the Board of Supervisorsever took any direct action against Defreest. Perhaps becausehis term was up (he was not reappointed), and possible becausehe still had political allies on the Board, matters were dropped. The 60-year-old Defreest retired to his farm in North Greenbush. However, in 1888 tragedy struck. On August 31, his body wasfound in the Hudson River at a boat dock in Troy. He hadattended races in Troy that day before the accident. His moneyand jewelry were intact and there was no evidence of foulplay. However, in his pocket there was a written inscription hehad composed which was to be placed on his wife’s tombstone. She had died exactly two weeks earlier.
