Sparks were flying behind the trans-

parent red walls as six young welders

set off to compete for the opportunity

to participate in US Open Weld Trials

and later in the Olympics of welding

— The WorldSkills Competition. At

stake is also a $40,000 scholarship to

a three-year welding program.

During the three-day event, these

top students will showcase their skills

with a variety of welding processes,

such as SMAW, GTAW, GMAW

and FCAW. Each contestant has to

complete several projects, including

a pressure vessel, a test pipe, a test

piece and several sheet metal and

stainless steel constructions. The

work is judged by the adherence to

blueprints, precision, aesthetics and

soundness. The contest will also ex-

amine written skills and the ability to

interpret welding codesw.

This year’s competitors are Mo-

hammad Farhat of Washtenaw Com-

munity College, Mich.; Joe Young

of Washtenaw Community College,

Mich.; Andrew Pellissier, Truckee

Meadows Community College, Nev.;

Wesley Smith, Penn College of Tech-

nology, Pa.; Mason Winters, College

of Eastern Utah, Utah; and Joshua

Steinbrecher, Northeast Wisconsin

Technical College, Wis.

To make it to this level, welders aged

19-21 have to have welding experience

through high school or post-second-

ary education, win their respective

state welding competition, a national

competition in Kansas City, and then

be selected by a committee to compete

in this Weld-Off. Three winners will

advance to the US Open Weld Trials,

where two will be selected to enter the

WorldSkills Competition in Calgary,

Alberta, Canada, in 2009.

This morning, competitors started

in individual welding environments,

draped in film for safety. Each work-

space was equipped with a Miller

Dynasty 350 machine for GTAW

and SMAW welding, Lincoln Electic

Invertec V350-Pro for GMAW and

FCAW welding, and an air extraction

system. Each contestant could bring

their own tool box.

“We allow them to bring pretty

much anything they want as long as

it doesn’t give them a competitive

advantage,” said Ray Connolly, shop

master and member of the AWS

Skills Committee. “They can bring

DON’T MISS TODAY!

In the age of doing more with less, as-

sociations that service manufacturing

must continuously find ways to add

benefits to both their members and

their industry because they have less

time to devote to outside activities.

For the Chemical Coaters Association

International, the finishing industry’s

association that provides education &

training and serves as the industry’s

networking resource, looking for part-

nerships with allied associations has

been a natural evolution over the past

several years.

“It became clearer with each pass-

ing year,” notes CCAI Executive

Director Anne Goyer, “that working

together with other manufacturing as-

sociations was definitely a way to add

benefit and value to our membership.”

CCAI’s members paint, powder coat,

electrocoat, plate and perform various

other finishing operations for a wide

range of industries throughout North

America. Supplier members support

finishers through education, training

and networking. “When researching

a trade show to partner with,” Goyer

Efficiency Matters More, Niches Less

By Tim Heston, Senior Editor, The FABRICATOR®

The metal parts supply chain resem-

bles a patchwork of manufacturing

technologies. In the past these patches

— cutting, bending, stamping, tube

and pipe work, joining, and finish-

ing — sometimes were attached with

rather loose stitches. One shop out-

sourcing a process to another could

add serious lead-time.

Not anymore. The stitches have

been pulled tighter than ever. Quick

response drives so much in this busi-

ness, and everyone in the supply chain

now works toward that end.

“It’s the FedEx syndrome,” said Jeff

Glaze, president of Westfield, Mass.-

based Decorated Products Inc., a

metal label manufacturer. “Everybody

once thought overnight delivery was a

ridiculous concept. Now we’re almost

to that point in our industry.”

To thrive, most foster tight sup-

plier relationships, and some also have

chosen to bring more technologies in-

house. Their capabilities in tube bend-

ing, stamping, and finishing probably

don’t match that of specialized sup-

pliers. An automotive stamper and a

high-mix, low-volume sheet metal

job shop are truly different animals,

of course. But for some companies,

having more capabilities in-house has

helped shorten lead-times and meet

customer demand.

Consider C.O.W. Industries of

Columbus, Ohio. In the 1990s (when

large orders were more plentiful), the

job shop received a large order from a

telecom company. “We could only do

500 to 700 of these parts every six to

eight weeks,” said Gary Foreman, vice

Manufacturing

Jobs in Transition

By Vicki Bell, Content

Manager, thefabricator.com

[email protected]

It’s a paradox of the 21st century: U.S.

factories need workers and factory

workers need jobs, yet both struggle

to meet their needs.

Responding to a recent “Fabricat-

ing Update” e-newsletter that dis-

cussed this paradox, a reader wrote, “I

have several friends who have a manu-

facturing background and are unem-

ployed. I have lived in this area … for

30 years and watched as one manu-

facturing plant after another closed

down. Though I enjoy my career as a

manufacturing engineer, I’m afraid I

wouldn’t encourage any young person

to pursue it as a career, because the

future in manufacturing still doesn’t

hold much promise.”
