The backcountry west ofSedona is a land of contrasts, aplace where salmon- andcream-colored cliffs reachinto azure skies and remnantsof ancient Indian villagesstand near luxurious modernresorts. A relatively short, partlypaved loop justoffStateRoute 89A provides access tothearea, takingyoupast trails, meandering canyons and ex-pansive mountain vistas.
Things to note:Coffee Pot Restaurant:
Start your drive with a heartyomelet (choosefrom101kinds)at this venerable eatery. Notinto omelets? Huevos ranche-ros are popular, as are bananapancakes and granola withblueberries and yogurt. Thelittle gift shop is fun, too. Ifyou’rewondering how the res-taurant got its name, just look
out back. The imposing rockformation to the north reallydoes look like an old-fashionedpercolator.
Details: 6 a.m.-2 p.m. daily.2050 W. State Route 89A. 928-282-6626, www.coffeepotsedona.com.
Devil’s Bridge: Despite itsominous name, Devil’s Bridgeis a lovely place. The shorthike to the rugged sandstonearch is fairly easy, gaining 400feet of elevation in a little lessthan a mile. Bear right at atrail junction about three-quarters of a mile from thetrailhead to reach the top ofthe bridge, or go left for a lookfromunderneath. Forest Road152 (aka Vultee Arch Road)leads northeast off Dry CreekRoad about 1.3 miles to thetrailhead. This stretch of roadis bumpy and uncomfortablefor low-slung cars.
Details: 928-203-2900,www.fs.usda.gov/coconino.
Enchantment Resort: En-
chantment was a splurge be-fore its recent $45 millionmakeover, and now it’s amust-see splurge. The sprawling re-sort, tucked away in BoyntonCanyon, is a destination on itsown. There are pools, theaward-winning Mii amo spaand hiking trails galore.Guests use their room key forspecial access to trailheads.
Enchantment doubled its res-taurant and bar space duringthe renovation. Don’t miss thepatio atView180 for afternooncocktails and appetizers.
Details: 525 Boynton Can-yon Road. 928-282-2900,www.enchantmentresort.com.
SCENIC DRIVE
Sedona’s backcountryThe Republic i azcentral.com
Total miles: About 270 milesround trip. From Phoenix, takeInterstate 17 north to Exit 298,then follow State Route 179 intoSedona. From the junction of SR179 and SR 89A, go west on 89Aabout 2 miles to the Coffee PotRestaurant. Continue 1more milewest, then turn north on Dry CreekRoad. Look for Forest Road 152(the turnoff to Devil’s Bridge Trail)about 2 miles north of 89A. Con-tinue north on Dry Creek Roadabout a mile to Boynton CanyonRoad. Turn left and go about amile and a half to Boynton PassRoad. The Enchantment Resort isto the right; the drive continuesleft about 4 miles to FR 525. Aftervisiting Palatki and Honanki ruins(to the right, about 2 miles and 4.5miles, respectively), take FR 525south about 6 miles back to 89A.Don’t miss: Step back in time atthe Sinaguan villages. You candrive directly to Honanki, but youhave to call ahead to visit Palatki. ARed Rock Pass ($5 per day) is re-quired at both sites. You can buyone at Palatki, but not at Honanki.Details: Honanki, 928-203-2900;Palatki, 928-282-3854; www.fs.usda.gov/coconino for both.
